TOO BROKE TO BE INVOLVED What can I do then? Have you ever invited someone to your chapter meetings? Or maybe even to the Party on the Patio events? Maybe just to hang out and talk about riding? Everything that we do as motorcyclists can lead into a conversation about freedom. I talk to motorcyclists at the gas station, grocery store, in line at Circle K, even at a stop light. Why? Because ABATE of Arizona fights for the freedom for ALL 200,000 plus motorcyclists in our state.

By the time this gets back from the printer everyone should be gearing up for the 26th Annual Too Broke for Sturgis weekend up at Mormon Lake. That got me to thinking because I hear it all the time.

“I don’t have enough time to be involved.” “I don’t have anything I can do to help.” “I can’t talk in front of people.” “I don’t know enough about politics or whatever …” So basically people are saying they are too broke in whatever capacity to be involved except for the party.
1. You aren’t forced to wear a helmet and other gear. 2. You don’t have to put your motorcycle through emissions any longer. 3. You can ride in the HOV legally throughout the state. 4. There are designated funds for motorcycle safety and awareness. 5. You can customize your bike without government intrusion.
Those are just a few of the things ABATE has successfully fought for over the years. Every motorcyclist should know who is on their side. TOO BROKE TO BE EDUCATED Now I am not talking about college. I am talking about the basic civics education that every American should know. I saw a t-shirt recently:

I will be contacting the Freedom Works Foundation to see if they can provide us with one of their “Restoring the Constitution” handbooks for every ABATE member. I only have one left that I carry with me at all times. I have given dozens of copies of the Constitution away over the past few years. TOO BROKE TO BE TRAINED I will be launching a grassroots training program for our chapters in the next few months. This will consist of a few basics. I’ll keep you updated on the progress and when I will be rolling it out. I can’t be at every city council, county commissioner meeting in the state. I try but it’s impossible. So it is my goal to train our PAC officers to know what to look for on a local level so we can take immediate action if necessary. All of our members should be able to assist in this process. I am also in the process of being able to offer a civics class starting in October for those

The bill defines the practice of motorcycle profiling and expresses the sentiments of the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives on the issue of motorcycle profiling. Additionally, the bill promotes increased public awareness on the issue and encourages collaboration, education and training for the motorcycle and law enforcement communities in order to end instances
of profiling.
The Motorcycle Riders Foundation (MRF), which has been advocating for a national solution to address motorcycle profiling with the support of the Motorcycle Profiling Project, will work over the coming months with states’ motorcyclists’ rights organizations as well as motorcycle clubs and individual riders to advance the measure.

Foundation, Kirk ‘Hardtail’ Willard, stated this with the bill’s release: “For too long motorcyclists have felt the effects of discrimination from law enforcement. Riding a motorcycle doesn’t make me suspect. We hope that, with this bill’s introduction, we can shine a national spotlight on this issue that affects every rider in every state, and helps put an end to this unconstitutional practice.”

The Arizona State Legislature session is over and we have had many positives come out of this year’s session. I will not get into detail as our Lobbyist Mike Infanzon has covered this in great detail already. I would like to congratulate Mike Infanzon on the Amazing job he has been doing on all of our behalf. I have received several complements from various others groups on his professional approach and his positive representation of the motorcycling community. Good Job Mike!!!

Hello to my fellow ABATE members! As I sit and write this it is the middle of May and it is an exciting time for us here in Arizona. High Country Chapter has just finished their “WILD IN THE WEEDS” event and from what I have been told it was a great time and a huge success. I had looked forward to attending for months but was taken ill a couple days before and could not attend. Our Lobbyist and his Associate are preparing to leave for Washington DC to attend Bikers Inside the Beltway where they will meet with as many of our
we expand our membership. The politicians who try to limit our freedoms see the strength in our numbers and the feel the pressure when we send out a call to action and their email addresses are flooded and the phone lines are screaming. It is by showing as a united front that we will be heard.
Fundraiser for ABATE of Arizona. The Too Broke Committee has been hard at work from almost the minute that last year’s event closed, working on making this year the greatest TBFS (Too Broke for Sturgis) yet! I know many folks look forward to this event every year and really enjoy all the games, music, vendors, food, camaraderie and the great riding in the area, but it is much more than that. This is the only major fund raising event that ABATE of Arizona puts on at the State level. ALL the proceeds from this wonderful weekend go towards continuing the fight for “Freedom of the Road”. This event helps pay for the publication of our newsletter “The Masterlink”, it helps fund delegations to participate in conferences with other motorcycle rights activists from around the country.
As you ride up to beautiful Mormon Lake Lodge and Campground, please be watchful for the wildlife up in the Coconino Forest. There are Elk and Deer throughout the area and many other creatures especially near dawn and dusk. Enjoy the trip but ride safe. I look forward to meeting with as many of my fellow motorcycle enthusiasts as possible. I have had the pleasure of working the registration booth the last couple of years and will try to spend as much time as I can there again this year. Be sure and say hello if I am there when you are registering.
TBFS also allows ABATE of Arizona to support the efforts of the American Motorcyclists Association (AMA) and the Motorcycle Riders Foundation (MRF) on a national level, and much more than I can list here. So when you attend TBFS not only are you having a GREAT weekend, you are helping to make sure that ALL motorcyclists will continue to enjoy the freedoms that we are so blessed to be enjoying now. I encourage all who believe in the Freedom of the Road to join ABATE of Arizona if you have not done so yet. Even if you cannot attend your local meetings it is important that

Arizona Bike Week UNCONNECTED to Phoenix Shooting
We read an article on April 17 via News 12 with the erroneous title 2 shot, 1 dead at Arizona Bike Week event and I immediately went to work tracking down WTF happened. Putting out questions to various information sources, within very little time I not only got the corrected story that NO shooting took place during Arizona Bike Week festivities ~ I also got a copy of the exact same press release that was sent out to local mainstream media outlets. Funny, the words Arizona Bike Week were nowhere to be seen. On top of that…. Neither were the words motorcycle, club, nor biker. How about that?
The Law is a short book, about 75 pages long, but was very influential because of the content that was nonetheless packed into it. Bastiat argues in it that a government consists only of the people within or authorizing it, therefore it has no legitimate powers beyond those that people would individually have.
He goes on to describe the rights that those individuals do have, which he recognizes as natural rights, based on natural law. He summarizes these as life, liberty, and private property, explaining that government's only legitimate role is to protect them: “ Life, liberty, and property do not exist because men have made laws. On the contrary, it was the fact that life, liberty, and property existed beforehand that caused men to make laws in the first place. ”
Therefore government is formed by people, in order to protect and enhance their natural rights. Any government that steps beyond this role, acting in ways that an individual would not consent to, places itself at war with its own populace.

One can assume that someone from News12 visited the scene, took notes, talked to people, etc? Apparently, based simply upon the fact that, as it turns out, motorcycle people were involved in the incident & that the shooting happened to take place during the Arizona Bike Week timeline… They came up with the flawed conclusion that the events must be linked. I can say that no reporter bothered to ‘fact check’ with any official of the Arizona Bike Week organization before making such a statement ~ I checked that myself.
Confirmation from Phoenix Police made it clear when asked that they never considered it to be a sanctioned "Arizona Bike Week" event; acknowledging that, “it is safe to say that many motorcycle events are planned during this time due to AZ Bike Week.”
In their zeal to sensationalize the news of a shooting between motorcyclists, the reporter {I use that term loosely} latched onto Arizona Bike Week as a ‘catch-all’ umbrella for any & all motorcycling-

The first weekend in June is when our East Valley Chapter hosts their “Annual Spaghetti Feed”. It is happening on Saturday June 3rd from 6 to 9PM at the Fraternal Order of Eagles hall in Mesa! The address is 1712 W Broadway in Mesa which is 1 block East of Dobson. They will be providing an ALL YOU CAN EAT Spaghetti dinner with hand rolled meatballs, garlic bread, salad AND desserts all for only $10 for adults and $5 for kids. There will also be a 50/50 etc. so come out and support our East Valley Chapter and eat your fill.

Dang middle of May already, bring on the heat. We have been on a weather roller coaster. Now with that said be sure that you are prepared to ride in that heat you can’t hydrate enough especially in 100 + temps. I am continuously reminded dress for the slide not the ride even when it is hot. Personally I don’t even think the word “hot” covers the heat in AZ. If you’re trying to escape the heat by heading up north make sure that you are watching out for obstacles in the road like oil spills or elk.
At the monthly chapter meeting on April 23rd we agreed to donate $300 for Run to the Wall then passed the hat to increase it to a total of $505, which we added to Phoenix Shadow Mountain chapter’s donation. Woo Hoo way to go East Valley Chapter. Ok I guess I should mention that during pass the hat we happened to beat Phoenix amount.

The Too Broke for Sturgis volunteer signup sheet was presented. The committee decided in all fairness to yearly rotate the Friday and Saturday shifts that East Valley and Phoenix Shadow Mountain cover. This year our time slot will be on Saturday. If you haven’t signed up yet please do so.
Mike Shearhart is a rock star when it comes to selling shirts at events. Speaking of events Motorcycles on Main was awesome as always. We have 1 more on June 2nd before the summer break; look forward to seeing your smiling faces. We hosted a booth at 11 mile swap meet on May 14th what better way to spend the day buying parts for Mother’s Day.
JR won our 50/50 drawing netting $11. We called for a security escort for him. East Valley member Lynn Baxter could have been $384 richer from the $1 jar.
After our meeting a group of us went out to the Casa Grande public shooting range. It was a little windy but a great day of target practice with wonderful people.
By the time most of you get to read this we will have rolled the meatballs, after the May 28th meeting for the Spaghetti feed on June 3rd. Can’t wait to see who is going to be brave enough to enter the meatball eating contest. Until next month, be safe out there. Enjoy the ride and as always keep it rubber side down. Hello Brothers and Sisters.
Well once again Wild in the Weeds has come and gone. If you were able to make the event, then you already know what a good time we all had. Big shout out to the OBMC for attending and showing their support. Also thanks to Jon and Pinky for showing their support, by bringing their crew from Choptown to our event to join in the bike games.
We had plenty of people and bike games to keep every one entertained for hours. We have added a lot of new games and will continue to improve our activities. This year we added a swimming pool. This was a big hit, OBMC had prospects doing bellyflops Friday night, and many escaped the heat on Saturday by taking a relaxing dip.
There were lots of raffles and our vendors were there with lots of good merchandise, and they participated in our poker walk. Friday night we rocked out to the sounds of Frozen Fire, and then Saturday Plum Krazy rocked the house. Punkin Center Bar went all out with breakfast and dinner buffets and lots of drink specials. I would like to thank Tonya, Harley, Rod, and all the staff at Punkin Center for making us feel welcome. Also to all the vendors that came out and participated. Lets not forget our bands Plum Krazy, and Frozen Fire, for their awesome performance. To Royce for MCing the event and Games. To Don Davis for allowing us to camp at his museum courtyard. Thanks to all our H.C.C. volunteers who worked the event. A special thank you to CC-Rider and Woody for putting this all together and making it a success.

Hello from Southern Arizona Chapter.
Just sitting down to write this and received an email about another rider going down in Tucson and in ICU. Having only lived here for 2 ½ years I continue to be appalled and distressed at the number of serious and fatal motorcycle accidents that occur. Tucson is not LA. There has to be some common factor to the accidents that occur. My guess, and some evidence is that it is in part the crazy leading/trailing left turn signal issue since so many of the accidents are in intersections. Maybe it’s time that someone initiates a study. On to happier topics…everyone is putting on the miles! I found myself at the Desert Winds Harley Dealership in Mesa on Saturday, May 13th for a Biker Blessing and BBQ. And, putting on the BBQ were a number of the usual ABATE suspects. Not only were they cooking great food, they were promoting ABATE of Arizona
Unfortunately, I will not be able to be at Too Broke for Sturgis this year due to a date change for a previous commitment. Being pretty new to Arizona we made our first Too Broke last year and had a wonderful time. We are really sad to be missing but encourage EVERYONE to make it. The Too Broke team are a hard working class act and they really know how to put on a run. It’s a weekend reminds us of an old-school bike run, what it’s all about. The Yuma chapter met on May 9th at 6:00 pm at the Copper Miner restaurant to conduct our monthly business meeting. The meeting was called to order, the Pledge of Allegiance was recited, and normal reports were addressed.
The chapter planned for our upcoming Memorial Day Run in Yuma to honor our fallen service members who paid the ultimate sacrifice for this great nation. The run will be held on May 29th in Yuma. During the meeting we had one guest join ABATE.
On May 13th, our chapter attended a benefit for CMA member Roy Meroniuk to help raise funds for a scooter so he could regain some mobility due to health issues. Enough money was raised at the event to purchase a new scooter for Roy. I regret to inform you that I have had to stepped down as the Yuma ABATE Coordinator and Communications Officer due to a pending PCS move back to Fort Lewis, WA with the U.S. Army. This will be my last submission to the Masterlink. However, Gilbert Hernandez will move up from Vice Coordinator to Coordinator and Randy Mosley will now be the Communication Officer.
The Yuma ABATE chapter meets the second Tuesday of each month at 6:00 pm. We will not have a meeting in June due to Too Broke For Sturgis. Motorcycle duo rolls up 64,000 miles (continued)
decides to stop for a moment on his long distance rides across the country.
On a recent afternoon, Connor was inside a local restaurant getting a burrito to go.
With his ears comfortably wrapped in a knitted scarf, Barney couldn’t have been more content to just hang loose and wait for those wheels to start spinning again.
Since Connor found him at a cocker spaniel rescue in California, the duo have traveled more than 64,000 miles together on mostly back roads through 20 states, including a trip to Vancouver, British Columbia, to attend the Winter Olympic Games.
Connor grew up riding motorcycles and his dogs were always part of the package.
“I’ve taught a lot of dogs to ride,” said the Corvallis man. “Most aren’t too bad. You put them on and they just go with the flow. Some are better than others.”
Connor comes by training naturally. His father, Kent, is known in the Bitterroot Valley for his well-trained draft horses that have been an integral part of many a celebration.
When Connor decided to start taking longdistance motorcycle trips back in 1995, he had another cocker spaniel that traveled with him.
“He was a little black and white cocker,” he said. “On that first trip, we went from southern California to Alaska.”
Back then, the genius who came up with the idea to create goggles for dogs hadn’t yet had that brainstorm.
“I just found a pair of kid’s goggles,” Connor said. “They seemed to work alright. I like to put a scarf around their head, too. It keeps the wind out of their ears. If you don’t do that, they flop around all the time. The scarf keeps the bugs and dirt out.”
Barney has always been a natural motorcyclist.
“He just took to it right away,” Connor said. “He’s just been a mellow dog right from the very beginning.”
Barney was dropped off at the doorstep of a shelter when he was 3. Connor found him through the Second Chance Cocker Spaniel Rescue organization. But Barney wasn’t his first choice.
Connor kind of preferred black and white or just pure black cocker spaniels. He tried another dog first, but that one had been abused in its earlier life. “He was too aggressive,” Connor said. “He bit me like 25 times. … Barney was actually my last choice.”
But it’s been a choice that he’s never regretted.
“I named him Barney after Barney Fife" of "The Andy Griffith Show," Connor said with a laugh. “He reminds me of Barney Fife.”
On an average year, the two travel close to 7,000 miles. Their longest adventure took them through Texas, Florida, Louisiana and the Outer Banks of North Carolina. By the time they got home, they had logged 10,000 miles together.
“He’s probably got more miles on him than most other motorcycle enthusiasts out there,” Connor said.
One thing about Barney, people do notice him.
“Anywhere we stop, people start asking me about him,” Connor said. “There are probably a million pictures of him floating around out there.”

In a rare bipartisan effort, motorcyclists are getting a very special form of representation in the U.S. Senate as two Senators are reaching across the aisle to establish the first Senate Motorcycle Caucus. Kickstarting this unique legislative road trip, Joni Ernst (R-Iowa) and Gary Peters (D-Michigan), both lifelong motorcyclists, will serve as co-chairs of the caucus, which will advocate on behalf of both motorcycle riders and manufacturers.
Sen. Ernst said her concern for motorcycles and motorcyclists started when she was a child. “Some of my most cherished memories include motorcycles, from delivering messages as a young girl to my dad while he was working out in the fields, to riding through the rolling hills of Northeast Iowa with family and friends,” Ernst said. “Throughout my 99 county tour of Iowa, I have heard from many of these folks about some of their priorities, including improving safety, infrastructure and energy efficiency. These concerns are shared by folks across our great state and country, and I look forward to working with Sen. Peters toward solutions.”

With motorcyclists sharing the road with a growing number of Smart vehicles, security from cyber-intrusion is a significant safety concern, and U.S. Reps Joe Wilson (R-SC) and Ted Lieu (D-CA) have introduced H.R. 701; the Security and Privacy in Your Car Study Act of 2017 ("SPY Car Study Act") to address automotive software safety, cybersecurity and privacy regulations.
This bill would require the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to conduct a study to determine and recom-
mend standards for the regulation of the cybersecurity of motor vehicles manufactured or imported for sale in the United States. The study shall identify:
- isolation measures that are necessary to separate critical software systems that can affect the driver's control of the movement of the vehicle from other software systems; - measures that are necessary to detect and prevent or minimize anomalous codes, in vehicle software systems, associated with malicious behavior;
- techniques that are necessary to detect and prevent, discourage, or mitigate intrusions into vehicle software systems and other cybersecurity risks in motor vehicles; and - best practices to secure driving data about a vehicle's status or about the owner, lessee, driver, or passenger of a vehicle that is collected by the electronic systems of motor vehicles; and - a timeline for implementing systems and software that reflect such measures, techniques, and best practices. PAGE 5 autopilot. Police said the officer and the Tesla exited a freeway with the motorcycle in front. When the rider stopped for a light, the car stopped as well, but then started moving forward. The officer jumped off the bike, which was struck at low speed by the car.
The driver reported having the car on autopilot at the time. The officer was uninjured and the car driver wasn’t ticketed. Tesla has warned customers in the past that its autopilot mode does not mean a driver can completely disengage, but increasingly it seems customers are unwilling to listen. Tesla's website specifically states that drivers are in command of their vehicles after exiting freeways. The company announced in October that it would soon begin including hardware in its vehicles that could make them fully autonomous. Colorado and Wyoming are the latest states to reclassify their licensing requirements which allow drivers of so-called "Autocycles", such as the Polaris Slingshot, to operate the vehicle with a valid state driver's license instead of requiring a motorcycle endorsement or license. Drivers under the age of 18 will still be required to wear a helmet, in accordance with the states' motorcycle helmet laws.
Because of the three-wheeled configuration and characteristics of autocycles, determining how to classify them has been a challenge for state governments. Polaris calls the Slingshot a "threewheeled moto-roadster." Initially, when it was introduced to the market in 2014, consumers were required to have a motorcycle endorsement or license to operate the Slingshot, which offers a distinct ride through its open cockpit and side-by-side seating.
Currently, 30 states, including the District of Columbia, require only a driver's license to drive an autocycle. The remaining states require a motorcycle endorsement, but Polaris says efforts are being made to reclassify the vehicle to gain full conformity throughout the United States.

DRIVER WHO "DIDN'T CARE" HE HIT MOTORCYCLIST GETS 15 YEARS
Remember the Texas driver who was filmed deliberately swerving across centerline into a passing motorcyclist and then said "I don't care" that he'd knocked the rider and his girlfriend to the ground?
The heartless car driver is 69-year-old William Crum and following a two-day trial at 355th District Court in Hood County, Texas, he’s been sentenced to 15 years in prison after being convicted on one count of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon causing bodily injury.
The 15-year sentence means that Crum, who was arrested soon after the incident in Granbury, TX in October 2015, will be in prison until he’s 84.

A mass London "Awareness Ride-Out" to be held a day after a deadly terrorist attack in the vicinity of the Palace of Westminster, seat of the British Parliament, had to be rescheduled in the wake of the Wednesday, March 22 car attack that killed four and injured more than 50 pedestrians. The campaign group "We Ride London," which aims to be the "main lobby group for riders of motorcycles, scooters and mopeds in London," had invited thousands to join a ride at 1pm on Thursday April 23, from Regents Park through central London to City Hall, but had to call the event off. A statement on the group’s Facebook page said: "We have decided to cancel tomorrow’s awareness ride in light of the terrible events in our capital today. Call To Action On 100 Percent Motorcycle Tariff On European Motorcycles
Now that the U.S. Senate has confirmed Robert Lighthizer as U.S. Trade Representative, some expect a decision soon on whether the United States will place a 100 percent tariff on European

The Motorcycle Industry Council yesterday urged its members to call their feder-
al representatives and voice their opposition to the tariff, which would affect European motorcycles with engine sizes of 50cc to 500cc. The USTR proposed the tariff in retaliation for a long-standing agricultural trade dispute with the European Union. “On May 11, the Senate confirmed Robert Lighthizer to serve as the new U.S. Trade Representative. Lighthizer was sworn in on May 15. There is no word on when Lighthizer and his staff will make a decision on the proposed tariff, but we expect a decision may be made soon,” MIC told its members on Monday. After Lighthizer was confirmed, AMA
President and CEO Rob Dingman immediately sent him a letter demanding he remove European motorcycles from the tariff proposal. He highlighted the damage such a tariff would do to the U.S. Dealer network.
“In America, the majority of motorcycles under 500cc are sold through small, independently owned shops,” Dingman wrote. “The collection of small- to medium-sized dealerships in the United States contributes to the employment of a substantial number of Americans.” “It appears that motorcyclists are simply pawns in a game of international chess,” Dingman noted in the letter.

On April 29th I got the privilege of riding with our Pres Jim Butsback and VP Brad Cosby to my very first ACMC meeting hosted by the Desert Thunder MC. We met up with JR, Vic, and Mike Infanzon. It was a eye opening awesome experience. I recognized a handful of people there. It was really neat to hear the names and see all the different groups and clubs. I felt pretty privileged to be allowed to attend and look forward to my next one.

What a wonderful 11 year anniversary gift for Nolan and I to get a call on Sunday May 7th from High Country Chapter Coordinator Wayne saying hey you won the $500 raffle on Saturday. Since we didn’t make it to Wild in the Weeds we met up with JR, Mary K, Ben and Teresa to enjoy the Alma MC Cinco De Mayo celebration with Johnny D on May 6th. What an absolute blast. The band was great. Couldn’t have asked for a better anniversary dinner. May 14th the Too Broke for Sturgis committee met at the Desert Winds cook shack for Party on the Patio which they graciously let us fundraise for donations by cooking and serving burgers and hot dogs. It was a ton of fun we took in $220 in donations toward Too Broke for Sturgis. I look forward to it next year. We even had Representative Athena Salman come by and visit with us. While we were

The 13th Annual Wild in the Weeds is in the books By Woody Phillips
This year’s Wild in the Weeds old school motorcycle rally was held on May 5th, 6th and 7th (the first weekend in May is its permanent date) at the Punkin Center Bar & Grill in Tonto Basin, Arizona. The event, hosted by the High Country Chapter of ABATE of AZ kicks off the summer riding season in the high country where riders from the Valley of the Sun head during those steamier months to enjoy cool riding on great roads.
The event started on Friday around noon time with the first of the campers arriving for the best spots for tent and RV’s alike. The High Country Chapter had their brand new 10x20 pop-up tent setup with merchandise, raffle and 50/50 tickets as well as sign-up forms for the people and bike games that would follow on Saturday. For most of the afternoon as attendees started to file in, camaraderie and cold beer were the main staples until the live music started. Frozen Fire, the band for Friday night, did not disappoint starting at 7 pm and leaving after midnight having thoroughly entertained those lucky enough to get away early on Friday to attend.
Saturday started with Harley’s famous breakfast buffet and quite a few Bloody Marys. Harley, the manager of the Punkin Center Bar, had new chefs in the kitchen this year and food had definitely improved over past events. The breakfast buffet was well-attended despite the numerous sleepy heads and hangovers. The food was great all weekend including the lunch buffet on Saturday and a
different breakfast selection Sunday morning. The author’s personal favorite was the dinner buffet Saturday evening as the BBQ chicken was totally awesome. We enjoyed that immensely as Plum Krazy, the band for Saturday evening, rocked us from the patio.
After breakfast was the poker walk among the various vendors in attendance. Thanks to Wolfskin Tattoo, Discount Biker Supply, Coyote Rose, Xen with Richard Lester’s Law Firm’s Aid to Injured Motorcyclists (AIM), Rim Country District of the Modified Motorcycle Association of Arizona, and SOS House for their support. At about 11 am Royce Kincanon, the same DJ/MC as 2016’s event, arrived with his music system and the ever popular Photo Booth, sponsored by MotorcycleSafari.com. Royce entertained us with rocking tunes and doubled as MC during both the people and bike games that followed.
A nice treat was the arrival of about 25 bikers from Chop Town that were camping that weekend up in Tonto Village (Choppertown.com). Their presence with some really old school hand-built choppers, including stretched forks, hardtails and suicide shifters, added some real challenge to the bike games. Visits to the photo booth, tattoo parlor on wheels, vendors and even an amazing game of Giant Jenga were enjoyed when not involved in a people or bike games.
However this year’s most popular spot became the pool that had been used the night before for an impromptu Belly Flop Contest by the Payson Chapter of the Old Bastards MC. I’m not sure who won that contest, but the pool was certainly well used over the course of the weekend culminating with substituting for the stage during the Wet T-Shirt Contest (Congratulations, Courtney). And speaking of winners; congratulations to Nolan Steed who won the $500 cash raffle and Joy Opie who won the 50/50 ($275) as well as all the raffle prizes and poker walk winners. Your support is greatly appreciated.
Next year’s event, the 14th Annual, will also be at Punkin Center and the dates for 2018 are May 4, 5 and 6. Don’t forget to mark your calendar and make reservations now as area rooms sell out fast and well in advance of each event. Also, there will be some Cinco de Mayo surprises planned and designated driver(s) will be on-hand to get you to local motels should you over imbibe. State Farm Insurance Says No Coverage For Motorcycle Clubs

The MPP received a copy of this letter from State Farm Insurance notifying a chapter of the Legacy Vets Motorcycle Club in Florida that the insurance coverage on their clubhouse was being cancelled. State Farm’s explanation for the policy cancellation is “we don’t provide coverage for businesses engaged in motorcycle clubs.” The MPP personally verified the incident in a face-to-face conversation with the individual that provided the letter to the MPP. He is a member of the chapter denied coverage.
Millions Could Be Denied Coverage?
Although there might be nothing technically illegal with State Farm’s actions because they are a private company, the blatantly discriminatory policy stands diametrically opposed to a the ideas of free expression and association and, in this instance, respect for the service of Veterans.
The Vietnam/Legacy Vets Motorcycle Club extends coast to coast and has a massive membership. And to be balanced, if there were a specific or legitimate reason given why this particular club had their coverage cancelled then it may be understandable and motorcyclists would raise no objection. But the letter explicated a general policy of not providing “coverage for businesses engaged in motorcycle clubs.”
The potential number of people impacted beyond this club is staggering. The AMA estimates that there are approximately 10 million registered motorcyclists in America, many of whom belong to motorcycle clubs. And the influence of Veterans on motorcycle club culture is generally accepted as common knowledge.

Beyond motorcycle clubs themselves, many of which are registered nonprofit entities, many businesses are “engaged” with motorcycle clubs. Consider the thousands of motorcycle repair and apparel shops that regularly engage in business with members of motorcycle clubs and their property. Motorcycle manufacturers as well. And the thousands of public accommodations, including bars and restaurants in all 50 states, that host motorcycle club charity events and engage in business with motorcycle clubs on a daily basis.

Nevada have Gang Task Force units that are extremely zealous in their perception of our activities. In Nevada, for example, the Las Vegas Metro PD GTF arrested an attorney who was attempting to represent his client, a Bikers for Christ member, while the police were attempting to ques-
tion him. He asked to have an attorney present during interrogation, the attorney arrived and was promptly arrested. Worse yet, the arresting officer, a sergeant, wrote two different reports. One of which was full of lies. The only thing that saved the attorney from disbarment was a video

another BFC member took while the actions were occurring. While it was proven in court that the sergeant committed perjury, they subpoenaed the real report, she was promoted to lieutenant and transferred to internal affairs. That attorney is now an Aid to Injured Motorcyclists attorney and is engaging in civil rights litigation.
Another item on the agenda was Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). This is the development of driverless vehicles. The major manufacturers all plan to have these cars and trucks on the road by 2025, some as early as 2021. The reason this is important to motorcyclists is that no manufacturer is developing a motorcycle that can operate in the coming system. The projection is that a fleet of tractor trailers can move down the highway at a high rate of speed in a column. The trucks would be able to drive within feet of each other with the new technology stopping only for fuel or to drop the loads and refill the cargo trailers. The elimination of drivers is the main goal of ITS, the projection is that this will save lives. While it is true that removing the operators from vehicles from motor vehicles will eliminate human error, it will also remove the actual pleasure of travel. One concept car from Mercedes Benz is a salon that has no windows and is designed to allow the passengers to work, lounge, or sleep during the trip. The operator would simply input the destination

We are Mark and Theresa Ann Kalifut, we have been in the biker community for going on fifty years now. Started out on little dirt bikes in dirt lots on our cousins’ property in Ohio. Crash and burns, scraps and scratches, but once you are bitten by the biker bug, you are in it for life. (We met at a Harley Dealership, married at that Dealership and by a Black Sheep, no less). Hogg Doggs came about after years of

and relax while the vehicle moved through traffic and parked. I envision a scene where the car would go fill up with gas while the owner is shopping and return when summoned. This also ties into a vehicle sharing program envisioned by some. There would no longer be a need to own a car or pay insurance. No more polishing the car on Sunday, as the maintenance would be done by robot car washes. No more waiting for an oil change, or finding a ride during repairs. No more DIY projects. There is a belief that by 2050, driver’s licenses would no longer be required. The operation of a motor vehicle would no longer be a rite of passage. While I can see major benefits to some people, such as the otherwise abled, I see a very real downside to the biker community. Rick Mellon of the Motorcycle Riders Foundation (MRF), the speaker at this seminar, discussed the very real possibility that motorcycles would be excluded from roads in the future. He said something that made me think hard; that Polaris ceased production of Victory Motorcycles because they cannot be converted to tri-cycle configura-
tion. These driverless vehicles will not operate properly if they fall over at a stop. I own a Victory and he is correct, the engine on mine is integral to the frame. By the time his presentation ended, I started to feel like what I imagine stage coach drivers felt like when they saw the first trucks moving on the roads. Well, the future isn’t here yet and we can still affect the change that is surely coming.
Another seminar involved civil rights and was presented by Stephen Stubbs, the singing lawyer. He wrote a song that he tried to teach us that is basically a statement of one’s civil rights and questioning the police on whether one is being arrested or detained. There is the question:” Am I free to go”, in the song. He repeats a mantra that my own attorney chants at me regularly, “Shut your mouth, shut your mouth, shut your mouth.” It is up to us whether a traffic stop is extended longer than necessary because we often cannot keep from talking our asses off. Any question asked should be answered by the admonition: “I do not wish to answer any questions, may I leave?” If

being Hog Wear and doing motor cycle apparel, jewelry, rings and things and Hog Wraps. Doing so many events over the years that it is hard to count. So many friends and experiences we have had and we wouldn’t trade any of them even for a shiny new ride!
We traded Hog Wear for Hogg Doggs about 4 years ago, we wanted to try something new, so we bought a hot dog cart and we were on our way, and so far, what a ride this has been. From Colorado to Nevada and just about everywhere in Arizona we could get ourselves in. We knew we wanted from the start to have the best food we could provide, especially to the biker community. We tested multiple brands of hot dogs and multiple brands of buns until we settled on the dogs and buns we use today. We started out with just hot dogs, then branched out
to Brats and Andouille and Polish Sausage, Pulled Pork, this led to our homemade “Arizona’s best Chili”, meatball subs, nachos, giant pickles on a stick and my favorite, chocolate covered bacon. We have our own homemade BBQ sauces, we pull our own pork, (tee hee) and we grill all of our dogs, brats, Andouille and Polish Sausages. Our chili simmers for 8 hours, our pork smokes for 12 hours. We feed our friends just like we feed family, with love and more love.
All along the way, we noticed this group by the name of ABATE, they always treated us great, they welcomed us to their events and would always stop by any event we were at just to say Hi. We grew to understand what they stand for and have enormous respect for all they do for US in the biker community. We wholly support ABATE and their mem-

we decide to yell at the officer, or share our opinion of his/her mother’s predilection for copulating with ship crews during Fleet Week, we are extending the traffic stop and there is a Supreme Court decision that says that the duration of a traffic stop can only be the time it takes to run the subject for warrants and write a ticket. I get the same advice from every lawyer I talk to: “Invoke your rights, don’t answer any questions, don’t offer any information, and SHUT YOUR FUCKING MOUTH.” If an officer asks me if I know why I was pulled over, from now on my response will be- “Because you’re lonely?” There was much more information shared but there is also next month’s issue that needs an article. I began my first law class this semester. I have two law classes and a justice system class focusing on criminal procedure during this summer period. I hope to do well. If all goes as it should, I will be able to prepare documents for court filing by the end of these classes. I joked to my neighbor that I am an ordained minister, and I will be able to marry couples and later prepare divorce filings for one of them. I can get them coming and going. Watch for next month’s column, until then ride safe. Watch out for driverless vehicles as they have not yet been shown to recognize motorcycles, or forty-foot truck trailers for that matter.
