Membership Criteria ACTIVE MEMBERSHIP CRITERIA

Active fellowship is open to surgeons who fulfill the criteria listed below:

• Fellowship in the American College of Surgeons (ACS) or equivalent international surgical college • Successful completion of an ACS Committee on Trauma ATLS course • Verified attendance at a past Annual Meeting of the AAST

MEMBERSHIP REQUIRES A SUBSTANTIAL AND SUSTAINED COMMITMENT TO THE FIELD OF ACUTE CARE SURGERY (TRAUMA, SURGICAL CRITICAL CARE, AND EMERGENCY GENERAL SURGERY) AS EVIDENCED BY THE FOLLOWING EXAMPLES: • • • • • • • • •

Active engagement in, and a record of, scholarly work in the field of acute care surgery (trauma, burns, surgical critical care, or emergency general surgery) Membership on the ACS Committee on Trauma or active participation in its programs (current or past) An institutional leadership role in trauma, burns, surgical critical care, or emergency general surgery Advanced fellowship training in Acute Care Surgery or its components Clinical practice in the area of acute care surgery (trauma, burns, surgical critical care, or emergency general surgery) Active service with EMS, disaster, or trauma systems organizations: local, regional, state, or national Active participation in local, regional, or national trauma and/or burn prevention programs Active participation in acute care surgery educational programs (for physicians or allied health personnel) at the local, regional, or national level Active engagement in, and a record of substantial contributions to, health policy and advocacy related to acute care surgery

Honorary Membership Criteria Nominees for AAST Honorary Membership must fulfill the following criteria: • • • •

The importance of the nominee's research/clinical accomplishments should be well known to the active member of the AAST who will nominate the individual. The importance of the nominee's research/clinical accomplishments should be confirmed by contact with their national, regional, or international society in trauma/surgical critical care/emergency surgery/burns. The nominee's professional visibility in the United States has been enhanced by attendance at and participation in prior meetings of the ACS, AAST, EAST, WTA, SCCM, ABA, etc. The nominee is willing to attend the AAST Annual Meeting at which they would receive their certificate as an Honorary Member.

To nominate an Honorary Member, please submit the following to AAST by May 1st: • • •

A letter of nomination by an active AAST member (prime nominator). A letter of recommendation from three (3) active AAST members. One of these letters can be from the prime nominator. The prime nominator will personally collate the three letters in support of the nominee along with the nominee's curriculum vitae, and will submit all to AAST by May 1st of the year of the nomination.

TO APPLY

The AAST membership application can only be completed online. To begin the application, you must first create an account on the AAST website to access the application. Paper applications and applications dated prior to 2016 will not be accepted. Once you begin the application, you will be able to save it section by section, and return to it anytime, and as often as needed, before the deadline to complete it. The required letters from two endorsers and one sponsor are to be uploaded to the application by the applicant. Application requirements include: • Three letters of support from active AAST members (1 sponsor and 2 endorsers)—these must be obtained and uploaded by the applicant. Please make sure that you have your sponsor and endorsers send their letters to you. • List of activities/participation in programs and organizations related to trauma and acute care surgery within the last year (see above). • A current photo of the applicant (in jpeg or tiff format). • A current copy of applicant’s curriculum vitae. • A cover letter, written by the applicant. Only applications that are completed by May 1st will be submitted to the Membership Committee for review. Once you submit your application, it will be reviewed by the AAST Membership Committee. The committee will select the applications that they feel are qualified to be voted on by the AAST membership. The voting process will take place at the business meeting during the AAST Annual Meeting. Notifications of acceptance will be mailed to applicants in October.
