Using Gizmos to Improve Conceptual Understanding in Math and Science Learn how gizmos help teachers take advantage of research-proven instructional strategies and help students of all ability levels develop conceptual understanding in math and science. Teachers can supplement and enhance instruction with powerful interactive visualizations of concepts. Students can manipulate key variables, generate and test hypotheses, and engage in extensive “what if” experimentation. Trekking the Net with NetTrekker NetTrekker is an amazing educational search tool for teachers and students. With links to a vast array of standards based digital lessons, NetTrekker provides a new and different way to engage students in a variety of subject areas from preschool to 12th grade. Taking Team to the Extreme Maybe Columbus was wrong. The world is flat! Come join us on this exploration of collaborative resources. Create exciting destinations to use for communicating and sharing. Columbus would have loved these resources. He could have collaborated with his first mate, along with the Queen back home at the same time. Some of the resources we will explore: wikis, notice boards, virtual whiteboards, and real-time text editor. Using Blogging to Teach Reading and Writing Skills Get students hooked on reading and writing through the use of Google Blogs! By using blogging in the classroom, teachers can teach, evaluate, assess, and authentically publish student work in a fun, meaningful manner. In this workshop, you will build your own blog and receive materials to help you support blogging in your language arts program. Mii to Wii This 3-hour session will introduce participants to the use of the Nintendo wii as a learning tool. Participants will use the wii to create projects and develop activities that help students learn math, literacy and science facts in support of state and district frameworks. This session supports the idea that students also have to use language skills, spatial awareness, and hand-eye coordination when using the wii as a learning tool. Some of the games also strengthen visualization, identifying, memorization, computation, and analytical skills as well. Discovery Education The state of Arkansas has a contract with Discovery Education to deliver online video, audio, and graphics content to schools in the state, but many are unaware of the great resources that are only a click away. Learn how to register, connect, and locate content quickly. Search all of Discovery’s media by keyword, grade level, or state curriculum standard. Furthermore, learn to use the Builder Tools to integrate these media into online assignments and assessments that your students can do at school or at home. Your presenter, Daniel Moix, is a STAR Discovery Educator, a member of Arkansas’ Discovery Educator Network Leadership Cohort, and one of only two Google Certified Teachers in Arkansas. Using and Collaborating with Google Docs Google Docs is a cool free web 2.0 office suite that invites creating, collaborating, and sharing. VICE PRESIDENT Jim Garvey Principal—Kimmons Junior High Fort Smith School District Jim began his career as a history instructor at Greenwood High School in 1995. He later served as assistant principal at Greenwood High and Fort Smith Northside High before taking his current position as Principal of Fort Smith Kimmons Junior High. Jim also serves as a Maintenance Officer in the 188th Fighter Wing of the Arkansas Air National Guard. Jim received his BSE from University of Arkansas in 1993 and from Arkansas Tech he received his Masters of Education in Educational Leadership and his Education Specialist. Jim has been an active board member of Arkansas ASCD since July 2007. “My vision for AASCD is that we continue to serve as a resource and support organization for educators at both the state and national level. I envision an organization that continues to inform and influence state education policy in order to meet the needs of the whole child. Further, I envision a state affiliate that will serve as the standard for other state affiliates with regards to education reform, curriculum, and effective instruction.

Joe Fisher Principal—Bethel Middle School Bryant School District In his 17 years as an educator, Joe has worked as a Choral teacher at Dardanelle Middle & High Schools, as an Assistant principal at Pinkston Middle school in Mountain Home and is currently the principal of Bethel Middle school in the Bryant school district. Joe has been a Legislative representative, Vice President, and President, for the Arkansas Association of Middle Level Administrators. He has served as a conference chair, Vice President, secretary, and representative for the AR Association of Middle level educators. Joe is currently serving on the conference committee for the AR Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development and is a former board member. Joe is the Assessor/treasurer for the AR Southern Forum for Middle Level Reform Schools to Watch. Joe holds a B.A in Choral Music, an M.Ed. In Educational leadership, and Educational Specialist certification from Arkansas Tech. AASCD is Arkansas’ lead organization for Arkansas educators. We represent a diverse community of educational leaders working together to promote successful teaching and learning. We are the guiding voice influencing policy and practice. We provide the resources and expertise for Arkansas educators in learning, teaching, and leadership.

Arkansas AASCD Board Position 1 Todd Marshell Principal, Chaffin Junior High Fort Smith School District

Todd has served as an educator for the last 20 years. In this time, he has been a math instructor and Junior High Principal at Van Buren’s Butterfield and Chaffin Junior High Schools. Todd has a combined 14 years as building principal. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Education and Master of Education in Education Leadership from Arkansas Tech University.

Mark Gotcher Principal, Crawford Elementary Russellville School District

Mark has 22 years of experience in education. He has served as music teacher and assistant principal at both the middle school and Junior High level. Mark earned his B.A. in Music Education and his M.Ed Educational Leadership at Arkansas Tech University. He has attended the Arkansas Leadership Academy-Teacher Institute as well as the UALR Partnerships in Comprehensive Literacy Training. In her 28 year career as an educator, Paulette has taught at the Junior High and Senior High level and now serves as the Director of the Southwest-A Education Renewal Zone at Henderson State University. She has received training and is serving or has served as coach for AR Leadership Academy, AR Teacher Institute and for AR Technology Institute. Paulette is currently a co-team leader for the AR Scholastic Audit and a member of the AR ACT Council. She also serves on the College and Career Readiness Policy Institute. Ms. Blacknall earned her BSE from Ouachita Baptist University in elementary education with a minor in special education in 1982 and a MSE in special education from Henderson State University in 1985. She is presently completing a MSE in Building Level Administration at Henderson State University.

Tiffany’s ongoing career in education began 16 years ago as a first grade Reading Recovery teacher. She has leadership experience as Curriculum Coordinator, Assistant Principal, (NV & AR), and as Reading First Technical Assistant supervising 10 schools for the A.D.E. She is currently serving as principal of Robert L. Davis Elementary. Tiffany has been a member of AR Reading Association and is a current member of Alpha Delta Kappa. She serves as president of S.W. AR Reading Council and Zone Director for the AR Assoc. of Elementary School Principals. She is a Coordinator for Volunteers in Public Schools and for Parental Involvement. Tiffany received her Bachelor of Science in Education in 1993, her Master of Science in Education, Reading Specialist in 2001 and her Ed Specialist in 2006 from Henderson State University at Arkadelphia.

Arkansas AASCD Board Position 3 Teresa Chance Assistant Director/Teacher Center Coordinator Northwest AR Education Service Cooperative Teresa has teaching experience at every grade level, K-8, and has taught classes as an adjunct professor for Center for Leadership and Learning at Arkansas Tech University. She served as a principal at both the elementary and middle school level in Cabot from 1994—2000. She has served as a board member as well as vice-president of AACIA and is a TICAL Cadre member. Teresa has served the AAMLA as board member and Legislative Representative. She is a charter member of AR Assn. of Middle Level Educators and served the following national organizations; ASCD, Assn of Elementary school principals, and Council of Teachers of Mathematics. She has also been a student in the AR Leadership Academy and NSF Leadership Institute. Teresa has published articles in many educational newsletters and has created math training videos for Caddo Parish Schools in Louisiana. She has been awarded the Curriculum Administrator of the year in 2006 and received the D.D. Terry Air force Association Achievement in Aerospace Education in 1996. While she was principal, Cabot Middle School received Outstanding Middle School in Arkansas in 1999. She received her Master of Education in School Administration in 1979 at Centenary College, Shreveport, LA “As for my vision, public education stands at an important crossroad. Our schools face challenges like never before. Are we courageous enough to make a stand for the future of the children in our communities? Do we have a vision for the future and are we willing to do whatever it takes to make it a reality? Roger Hill Principal Kirksey Middle School Rogers School District

Roger began his 23 year career in education as a math teacher at Kirksey Middle school in 1987. He has also been assistant principal of Ramay Jr. High and is currently the principal at the same school where his career began—Kirksey Middle School. He holds a BSE from John Brown University, a Master and Doctorate in Educational Administration from University of Arkansas. Roger received a Master Principal Certification from the Arkansas Leadership Academy. “My goal as an AASCD board member would be to help AASCD achieve it’s mission, ‘Arkansas ASCD, a diverse group of educators, is dedicated to development and support of leadership and best practices in curriculum, instruction, assessment, and supervision that ensures success for all learners’.”
