Summertime Fun and Fellowship!

“Standards are not enough,” declares Dr. Douglas Reeves in this provocative new keynote address. “We can write standards and give high-stakes tests all day, but without meaningful student engagement, teachers and students become adversaries rather than partners in the enterprise of learning.” Applying extensive research, practical applications, and exhaustive case studies, Dr. Reeves will provide insights into the use of assessments for feedback that will improve student motivation and save valuable teacher time. “The country may be over-tested, but we are under-assessed,” explains Dr. Reeves. He makes the case for classroom assessment that is engaging and rigorous, providing feedback that is accurate, specific, and timely. Twice named to the Harvard University Distinguished Authors Series, Dr. Reeves also won the Parent’s Choice Award for his writing for students and parents and was named the 2006 Brock International Prize Laureate for his contributions to education. Though he lives near Boston, Reeves has deep Arkansas roots, with a grandfather who received his Arkansas teaching license in 1906.

Embedded Professional Development Martha Ragar, Principal Van Buren School District Van Buren School District (VBSD) has expanded learning opportunities for teachers through embedded professional development. A cycle of learning which touches both students and teachers is the foundation for this approach to professional development. The cycle begins with the study of student performance data to determine academic needs. Next the learning community obtains pertinent new learning. These concepts and techniques are mastered through study in team meetings and practice in the classroom. The effect of the new learning on student academic achievement is evaluated. The outcome of the evaluation begins the cycle again with the revised academic need. A critical part of this cycle is the dynamic relationship between student academic needs and the teacher’s implementation and assessment of the effects of the techniques implemented.

Structural changes within the school are required in order to implement this cycle of learning through embedded professional development. These changes involve time and personnel. At some levels in VBSD, an 80 minute block of time is scheduled each week for teams of teachers to meet and implement the cycle of learning. Team meetings are during the school day while students participate in classes such as art or music. This major structural change in class schedules emphasizes to the learning community the importance of embedded professional development. Personnel changes in Van Buren include the use of curriculum coaches. Each school’s leadership team includes the principal and curriculum coaches. It is the responsibility of the leadership team to plan outcome-based agendas for the team meetings which support the cycle of learning. The curriculum coaches have the responsibility of guiding and supporting the

classroom teachers in study and in practicing instructional techniques in the classroom. The ultimate evaluation of the application of the cycle of learning is student academic achievement. The traditional model of ten individual days of professional development continues to be part of our district’s approach to adult learning. However, these ten days are no longer isolated from the actual life of the classroom. Rather, the professional development days are an extension of the weekly team meetings and the cycle of learning. Embedded professional development gives energy to the school’s professional learning community.

A cycle of learning which touches both students and teachers is the foundation for this approach to professional development.
