One year after their first Hungarian club concert, electronic metalcore star band Enter Shikari are returning to Budapest. This time they’re performing at Barba Negra Music Club instead of the A38, but the gig is organized by the Ship. Hardcore, industrial, metal, drum and bass, dubstep, heavy riffs, liquid electronics, zany stagediving - all this tonight. An irresistible offer.

If you think of 1990s electronica, one of the first names that comes to mind is Freestylers. The British breakbeat duo was formed in 1996 and released their debut We Rock Hard two years later - it proved to be a very successful start. They’ve been working ever since, and their catalogue includess now six long-players - the latest one being 2013’s The Coming Storm. Freestylers mastermind Aston Harvey is returning to make the audience dance on the A38 Ship.

Another returning band on the A38: the group with the appropriate name playing psychedelia, post-punk, electronica and noise music are coming back to the Ship after three years. The Soft Moon, comprising of sole member Luis Vasquez and augmented by touring musicians, are presenting their latest album Deeper, released earlier this year.

Two special female singer-songwriters, both from the edge of bedroom pop and experimental electronica. The pseudonym of the mysterious Dutch artpop singer looks as if it was an email address with the first name and the year of birth. We don’t know much more about her, but we’re aware that she lives in Amsterdam and that her music has elements of electronica, triphop and jazz. Support on this night is one of the most special female artists of the local scene: Krisztina Dányi aka morningdeer.

Musical genius Frank Zappa would be 75 years old this year. Unfortunately he died in 1993, but his legacy lives on, and so does his backing band. Formerly known as the Mothers Of Invention, Zappa’s musicians now call themselves grandmothers, but that shouldn’t evoke any negative thoughts - these aging gentlemen perform the old Zappa classics in superform.

How do blues rock tradition and experimental spirit work at the same time? We get the answer from the excellent roots duo from Athens, The Big Nose Attack, formed in 2011. Support comes from a similar local band, who are named after one of the most popular Hungarian novels (in English: Sons Of the Coldhearted Man).

One of the most important bands in Hungarian pop/rock history is VHK (aka Vágtázó Halottkémek) who stir punk, krautrock, psychedelia and magical folk music in an incredibly unique way. They broke up in 2001 but reformed in 2009. On this night, as part of the classic album gig series on the Ship, they’re performing their classic 1988 long-player A halál móresre tanítása (released in Western Europe under title Teach Death A Lesson).

Norbert Kristóf started out as an acclaimed talent of the local young music generation in the mid-2000s with his spacey songs full of exciting effects. His musical world was formed by the alternative output of MTV in the early 90’s: among his favorites were The Cure, Nirvana, Radiohead, The Smashing Pumpkins and Sonic Youth. He’s recently restarted his career after a longer period spent abroad under the name Sobieski.

A truly special moment: glitch hop / bass music artist OPIOU, born in New Zealand as Oscar Davey-Wraight but based in Melbourne, is making his Hungarian debut on the A38 Ship. He’s a festival favorite and he’s played sets to tens of thousands of people from Coachella to Glastonbury, and apart from the tremendous amount of remixes, he had the time to put together a complete band. On stage, the funk-loving artist is surrounded by a number of analogue and digital gadgets, and he’s a very entertaining personality.

Not only a musical event, but more than that: CAFe Budapest and the A38 Ship are presenting tenor saxophone / bass clarinet player David Murray, a key figure in contemporary jazz, who moves between mainstream and avantgarde. His band features an amazing spoken word artist, Saul Williams.

Led by Jeff Waters, Canadian band Annihilator are a real metal monolith. They were formed in the mid-80’s, released their debut Alice In Hell in 1989. The style of the album was similar to the Bay Area thrash bands. Since then, they’ve released over a dozen longplayers, and there have been several changes in the line-up. Although viewed by some as Waters’s solo project, Annihilator in fact has four members. They are mainly popular in Europe and Japan.

Former Sick Of It All roadie Toby Morse is returning to the A38 Ship with his outfit H2O after two years. They were formed in New York, on the Lower East Side in 1994, and toured with the most important punk/hardcore bands of the scene in the second half of the 90s. In 2001, they released an album (Go) under a major label. On this night, they’re presenting their latest output, Use Your Voices.

If you’ve never heard a Luxembourger math rock band (or simply a Luxembourger band, for that matter), then here’s the chance to get to know one. Mutiny On The Bounty, who resemble early Foals or Battles, have become one of the most important European post-hardcore bands in the past five years. They’ve supported Biffy Clyro and they’ve also performed at Roskilde and Primavera. On this night, they’re presenting their new album Digital Tropics - their first work that doesn’t include vocals.

Songhoy Blues Hands up, if you know any bands from Mali apart from Tinariwen or Tamikrest! If you don’t, then it’s time you got to know the band that received praise from Damon Albarn, took part in the highly acclaimed Africa Express project and managed to make its debut album with none other than Nick Zinner from Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Garba Toure was a young guitar player who lived in the Timbuktu region of Mali, which is what we could call the central part of the country. A few years ago, jihadists took control of that area and they banned people from listening to music, let alone playing it. Garba decided it was time to leave and he formed a band with some of his friends. Upon arriving in Bamako, they learned that they had to go to the authorities for permission to play. Garba’s musical heritage came from his father who once played alongside the mighty Ali Farka Toure (no relations, Toure is possibly the most common surname in Mali). Inheriting his dad’s passion for blues heroes such as Jimi Hendrix, John Lee Hooker and B.B. King, he wanted the word ‘blues’ in his band’s name - Songhoy refers to the main ethnicity that the members belong to.

First, they found it difficult to perform in the south because of their Songhoy origin, but their music won over even the most doubtful people in the audiences. Their songs included not just blues, but also elements of rock, R&B, hip hop, funk, boogie, and even punk. The big break came in 2013 when they were invited to take part in the Africa Express project. Soon afterwards, gigs in the UK followed, and they managed to record their aptly titled debut album Music In Exile with Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ Nick Zinner. Quite recently, they were involved in a documentary called They Have To Kill Us First: Malian Music In Exile that debuted at the South By Southwest festival in Austin, Texas. Garba and his bandmates are hoping to return to their original homes one day, but they know that a lot of things would have to change for that, and it might not happen too soon. They remind the refugees to remain patient, no matter how difficult that is. Until things turn for the better, they fight with their songs, and their message couldn’t be better summarized than what Garba said lately: “The world without music would be like living in a prison.”

RESTAURANT 7

VERY BIG OCTOBER

Not only the concert program of the A38 Ship is very strong this month - the Restaurant also offers a lot of excitement: the Restaurant Week is about to take place, the winter menu is coming soon and we are having concert + dinner offers again.

Restaurant Week

Concert + dinner

The A38 Restaurant is taking part in the Restaurant Week series again. On these seven days, more than 120 Hungarian top restaurants offer special three-course meals for 3300 Ft or more. Advance reservation is necessary. To follow previous experience, the A38 Restaurant is not preparing the usual dishes, instead, we are presenting a special menu, from which our guests can order the dishes that best satisfy their tastes.

October 7 Frank Zappa would be 75 years old in 2015. On this occasion, his old band is touring under the name Grandmothers Of Invention. For this evening, we are offering a two-course dinner. The concert + dinner costs 5900 Ft. Grilled chicken breast filled with leek and feta cheese, served with green spice gnocchi Raspberry cake with mascarpone mousse

Winter menu is coming! In this period, we are introducing our winter menu, which is complemented with a classic Hungarian monthly offer as well. Preparing our menu, we certainly paid attention to keep the favorite dishes of our regular guests - but we reinvented them a little bit. These include the home-made “tócsni” pie filled with veal paprikash, or the butterfish steak with spinach tortilla, among others. We also keep our vegetarian guests in mind, therefore the menu will feature the cep tagliatelle or the black risotto with grilled crab, and since no Italian pasta time must be left out, the menu A38 // RESTAURANT will also contain the penne with piquant tomato ragout and parmesan chips. Monday-Saturday H-Szo 11.00-23.00 Hopefully, the desserts will not disappoint the guests either. October 21 The concert of Israeli folk metal band Orphaned Land with the Berlin goth choir Stimmgewalt is a real gem, just like our two-course dinner composed for this evening. Our concert + dinner combination can be bought for 5900 Ft until October 18. Duck breast steak with pumpkin risotto Poppy dough

Henryk Sławik Pier Since September 18, we have a new address: the lower pier on the Buda side between Petőfi Bridge and Rákóczi Bridge has been named after Henry Sławik. The naming fits the concept according to which the lower piers of Budapest are named after victims and heroes of the terror of 1944-45. Pole Henry Sławik was this kind of hero, but unfortunately his fantastic lifestory is not too well-known in Hungary. Sławik, tightly cooperating with József Antall Sr., father of the very first Hungarian prime minister after the democratic transformation, helped tens of thousands of Polish refugees during World War II, for example with giving false identification, organizing education, establishing orphanages. Apart from the Poles, they helped over five thousand people of Jewish origin to escape the country. During the German occupation, Sławik was captured and brutally tortured by the Gestapo, but despite this, he didn’t betray his peers, among them Antall. He was executed in Mauthausen, his wife was transported to Ravensbrück, and his little daughter was sheltered by the Antall family, until her mother returned. His biographer calls Sławik the “forgotten hero of three nations”. On our behalf, we are glad that the renaming of the pier lifts this special man from oblivion.

A38 Sessions in the Gozsdu Manó Klub The A38 Ship is (also) famous for offering some of the most varied and colorful musical programs in Budapest. It houses over 650 concerts in three venues on a yearly basis (the number of performers is even higher). And that’s not everything. There’s a huge number of programs (mostly lesser known ones, and coming from abroad) that simply don’t fit into the busy schedule of the A38. Therefore we are starting the A38 Sessions series together with Gozsdu Manó Klub. It will feature artists not so well-known but amazing singers and bands, most of whom have never played in Hungary, who are at the early stage of their careers, and who might come back later as festival acts. The series starting in October will include Mutiny On The Bounty from Luxembourg, GOLD from the Netherlands, Thomas Dybdahl from Norway, Shilpa Ray and Such Gold from the USA, plus many others. The A38 Sessions are organized by the A38 Ship, the concerts will be held at the Gozsdu Manó Klub.

KÉPZŐ starts again The A38 Ship has been organizing the painting, graphic and photographic art application of Diákhitel Központ Zrt. (Student Loan Center Ltd.) called Education. This application offers a chance for students of Hungarian institutions of secondary or advanced education to take part by sending paintings, graphics or photos in a given topic. This year, Képző (means: Education) starts again, and the application deadline is the end of November. Unlike in previous years, the chairpeople of the jury will be a pair of siblings: painter Zsófi Barabás and musician Lőrinc Barabás. The two of them (together with the representatives of Student Loan and the A38) will select from the works sent in. They won’t have an easy job, that’s for sure: last, over 280 candidates sent in more than 400 applications. Chances are this year will be no different. The jury’s task is to select the best 20 entries - these will be put on open display in the A38 Exhibition Space. The awards ceremony will take place on December 22. Then the winners of the prizes (including an iMac laptop, a MacBook, an iPad and similar other gadgets that help with creating) will be revealed. Thus: Képző starts again, application deadline is end of November, more details on this website: www.diakhitel.hu/kepzo

8 INTERVIEW

A synergy of the four of us Mutiny On The Bounty-interview Members of Mutiny On The Bounty are slaves to the rhythm with minds obsessed with a groove, guaranteeing that all of their albums are different than what you’d expect from a band that’s often labelled as math rock. On their newest album, Digital Tropics, they’ve explored even newer territories – we asked drummer and lead vocalist Sacha Schmitz about these things and others. Does the band’s name come from the historical event that happened in the 18th century or the Marlon Brando film with the same title? What was about that, what got you hooked about it? Actually we didn’t even think of the movie or anything related to the actual MOTB story when we chose the bandname. It started as a joke and we liked the idea of mutiny going on between the guitars, constantly dueling with each other. You’ve already performed in Budapest, three years ago. What kind of memories do you have of that concert? We remember that Budapest is beautiful. Unfortunately we had way less time to visit Budapest (like most of the cities we play on tour). We played a cool show with Tera Melos and I remember that we went to a hip-hop party after the show and got pretty drunk with our friend Pali from Shell Beach. And about this year’s concert at Primavera festival? There was quite a buzz around your performance. Could you catch any other band’s concert? Primavera was unbelievable. We played four shows in a row around and on Primavera and all of them were amazing. We had a lot of people on each show and they got really crazy. We had a great time there! We watched James Blake, Alt-J, Jungle and amm. How did you overcome all the lineup changes that took place in the last years? It’s always hard to readapt with a new member in the band. You kinda start from the beginning each time, but the passion about music and this band is and has always been very important to us. So we just make it happen. Your newest album, Digital Tropics is completely instrumental. What inspired this decision? It wasn’t really a decision, but it all came just naturally. As soon as we

INTERVIE W AT

BLOG.A38.HU

started to write the new songs it didn’t feel like putting vocals on them. We left a lot of space for the guitars which are very melodic and took over the vocals kind of. Did your songwriting methods change with this album? What was it like to work in a real studio with a real producer? It was a great experience and Jan Kerscher (the producer on Digital Tropics) is a great sound engineer, producer and musician! It was very productive especially because we decided on purpose to write a fair amount of the album in the studio. The methods changed in the way that everyone in the band was way more involved in the songwriting. Everyone of us wrote parts or even complete songs and it’s really a synergy of the four of us. You’ve said in interviews that while working on Digital Tropics, you were mainly influenced by 80s music, hip-hop and electro. What would you say, what kind of effect did they have on your sound? A huge effect on the songwriting and especially on the sound of the album. We were always influenced by more than just math rock and post rock music but this time the influences were bigger and stronger. In the end it brought way more groove to our music and a dancey touch. You’ve toured with a lot of bands, but which bands have been the most enjoyable for you to go on tour with? We had the chance to tour and play with a lot of amazing bands! We really had a great time playing shows with bands like And So I Watch You From Afar, Maps And Atlases, Cinemechanica, Rumble In Rhodos, Dana Plan, No Metal In This Battle and many more. What were this year’s most outstanding bands and releases for you yet? This year has been great already but there’s more to come. A few highlights were Delta Sleep’s Twin Galaxies and Everything Everything’s Get To Heaven. We’re looking forward to hearing the new Battles album.

EXHIBITION 9

András Wahorn

okt. 13-31.

Far-reaching consequences In the A38 Exhibition Space, we can witness the suppletory introduction of András Wahorn, legendary figure of Hungarian art. Wahorn”s canvases are all comics reduced to the end. His figures are images, which serve readability with a simple toolbar, present the basic momenta of human life, attractions and choices, or even repulsions and fights. The pictures of the 62-year-old artist made specifically for this exhibition were inspired by his current musical projects. The series presents one of the most important aspects of Wahorn’s life, musical functioning, through large-sized 2x2.7 m oil paintings. Of course, the pictures don’t lack the theme that’s perhaps even more important for Wahorn than music: love. It doesn’t only appear in the paintings as a theme - he makes the works together with his current spouse, artist Kata Töttös. The visual worlds of the two creators, photorealism and art brut, are total opposites to each other, yet all these meet up in the pictures, creating highly exciting relations. Traveling between genres has never been unusual for Wahorn, but in this project, almost every element comes closer to one another than before: music and fine art, creation and private life merge. Wahorn has formed more improvisational music projects in recent years under the aegis of the Hungarian National Wahorn Club, and two of them will be introduced to the public during the exhibition: on October 15 Wahorn Airport, on October 17 Tapasztalt Ecsetek (Experienced Brushes) are taking the stage in the A38 Exhibition Space. It’s worth citing one of Wahorn’s famous sayings in connection with the exhibition: “The brush is sweeping, the sax is blaring, the globe is turning, happiness or the dark hole of the endless is an illusion just like anything that was created by the human mind. This moment is here! (and it’s no longer here)” The exhibition can be attended with registration in advance, 11.00-18.00, every day Please contact: +36 1 4643940

Radical art practices in the Marinko Sudac Collection

The Marinko Sudac Collection

As the accompanying exhibition of the Guest Balkan program of Art Market Budapest 2015, the Marinko Sudac Collection presents 20 masterpieces of 21 artists of the Yugoslavian neo-avantgarde and post-avantgarde art, from the early 60s to the early 80s. Whereas the Hungarian public had the opportunity to get to know certain bits of the collection at the exhibitions in the Kassák and Ludwig Museums, this current display shows the emblematic pieces of informel, protoconceptual, conceptual and post-conceptual art, and the experimental film art of the 60s/70s, among others.

In The Marinko Sudac Collection in Zagreb, early avantgarde, neoavantgarde and post-avantgarde art can be found, and also the morphologically similar creative phenomena and several works of art created along the different turnouts of experimental art from the beginning of the 20th century until the fall of the Berlin Wall. In geographical terms, the interest sphere of the collection spreads from the Baltic states to the Black Sea, putting extra emphasis on the Central-East European territories. The collecting strategy of Marinko Sudac is concentrated on the systematic exploration, research and learning of the avantgarde creative practices which, due to historical and socio-political circumstances, were forced to the periphery, got banned, or completely ignored in certain cases. The collection differs from the existing European art foundations in a regional context, it makes the studying of a coherent, cohesive avantgarde art material possible, furthermore it gives a dynamic basis to knowledge exchange regarding the avantgarde. To underpin all this, we can refer to the several academic and retrospective exhibitions and manifestations organized by the foundation, followed by voluminous publications and separate essays, as a result of a cooperation with significant institutes, experts, art historians and creators of the international art system.

Exhibiting artists: Eugen Feller, Ivo Gattin, Gorgona group (Josip Vaništa, Marijan Jevšovar), Vladimir Petek, OHO group (Naško Križnar, Marijan Ciglić, Miljenko Matanović, Marko Pogačnik,Tomaž Šalamun, Andraž Šalamun), BOSCH+BOSCH group (Slavko Matković, Szombathy Bálint), Radomir Damnjanović Damnjan, Era Milivojević, Grupa šestorice autora [Group of six authors] (Željko Jerman, Sven Stilinović, Boris Demur, Vlado Martek), Tomislav Gotovac, Željko Kipke

Buda

153 history A38 is the reincarnation of ‘Tripolie’, a Ukrainian stone-carrier ship, built in 1968. The name comes from Artemovsk, which is the ship prototype, and this one was the 38th unit of the ‘Artemovsk’ class. The re-building project lasted for one and a half years. Architects, ship engineers, acoustic designers, electricians, musicians and promoters contributed their skills and experience to make it a both artist and audience friendly place. After years of constant development, A38 has become a cultural entertainment centre with international programme, a restaurant, five bars, one main concert hall, open-air terraces and lounges all in one aboard as one of the most fascinating venues in Budapest. Since its opening it became the flagship of Budapest nightlife, a must-see spectacle on the Danube with scenic view and one of Europe’s coolest clubs, which has been voted ‘The World’s Greatest Bar’ – according to the poll of Lonely Planet in 2012.
