Slaves (UK), SONYA

Blood Red shoes are a one boy / one girl band from Brighton. The winning formula looks as follows: cool guitar playing girl (Laura-Mary Carter) + drummer guy (Steve Ansell) = heavy garage-rock-punk-pop. The duo present their eponymous fourth album recorded in Berlin and released in March. Dancing blood red shoes over the Danube!

The A38 Ship celebrates her 11th birthday, the city is about to bloom, which means that everything is given for a grandiose ship party, conducted by Jean-Chritophe Le Saout aka the relapsing, sorry, returning French DJ-producer, Wax Tailor, who will stir an irresistible party mix out of triphop, hip hop and electro-swing. Cheers!

Time to dive deep but not literally, of course! Berlin-based English producer Paul Rose aka Scuba is about to revisit us with his amazing set consisting of dubstep, techno, house and bass music. As a founder of Hotflush Recordings, he has been essential in releasing material by Benga, Mount Kimbie and Joy Orbison, as well as his own. Tonight, he is joined by Isu, Naga & Beta and Sinko among others.

God Is An Adam Astronaut Freeland (IRE) 07

20.00

God Is An Astronaut, claims the post rock quintet built around the Kinsella twins - either way, it is quite certain that this band is an even more unique act than the special scene it represents. Their pulsating, theatrical and visual set, which is based on their 2013 album Origins, provides an amazing opportunity to float with them.

Laibach (SL)

A real icon of electronic music, who has been around for two decades: DJ/producer/remixer Adam Freeland brings the ship in motion, in the company of such noted Hungarian DJ’s as Palotai, Ludmilla, Dublic, Pryus, Krueger, Zera and Adam Dolph.

20.00

There’s a spectre lurking in Europe, which is in fact Laibach, tireless representative of Neue Slowenische Kunst, touring new album Spectre. The sensually cold and theatrically militaristic concept-formation couldn’t present its latest program in a more suiting scenario than the most effective industrial monument of Budapest, the freshly revitalized A38 Ship.

Subscribe, AWS, Banished, Eye For I 11

19.30

Budapest six-piece Subscribe started out from somewhere around the territory of Rage Against The Machine and nu metal in the late nineties - since then, their music has become complex, unique and exciting, blending elements of rock, metal, prog, pop, electronica, psychedelia with lyrics written in both English and Hungarian. On this night, they present their latest album, This Moment Will Soon Be Gone.

And So I Watch You From Afar (NIR) 24

19.00

Parno Graszt, formed in 1987, is one of the most notable, well-known and significant Hungarian roma folk bands. The meaning of the group’s name is ‘white horse’, which is a really telling name: the white in this context refers to purity, and the horse is the symbol of liberty. Parno Graszt gives a grandiose concert on this night, which will be recorded on film for an album and a TV show, therefore everybody is welcome who wants to be part of a memorable night preserved for posterity.

And So I Watch You From Afar is a three-piece post rock band from Belfast, Northern Ireland, formed in 2005. Formerly consisting of four members, the group plays mainly instrumental music. They have released three albums so far - now they are touring their latest one, All Hail Bright Futures, released last year. If you come and watch them, you’ll be convinced that a bright future awaits them.

Bea Palya 09

20.00

Bea Palya is a concept in Hungarian music: what she does is not folk music, not world music, not a singer-songwriter tradition, but all these - a mixture of the above-mentioned ingredients. On this special concert, she presents the material of her latest album, Nő (Woman).

Budapest Bar 27

20.00

Consisting of some of the best-known Hungarian singers and roma jazz musicians led by Robert Farkas, Budapest Bar started out by covering famous hits of the era between the two world wars, but later began to select from a wider palette. They have been a brand for quite some time now and have toured the country extensively. Budapest Bar is about to release two albums this year - the premiere of the first one, the springlike-dancey record promises a huge treat on the Ship.

Hidden Orchestra (UK) Deephlux

05

19.00

Edinburgh band Hidden Orchestra is usually regarded as an electronic jazz act, but the case is not that simple, and at the same time, it is even more simple than that. For them, jazz is just a starting point and/or is the synonym of informality. In their music, based on two drums and electronica, the elements of art pop, reggae, hip hop and psychedelia can also be found. The collective return to the A38 after their previous successful performance on the ship. Support is provided by the special award winning band from the A38 talent contest, Deephlux.

FINN ANDREWS (THE VEILS) “AN AMAZING TIME CAPSULE” Some people say you have a scary stage presence. Do you think you’re scary when you’re playing? Ha! Well I hope not too scary. I try to put as much force as I can into a performance, and it takes me somewhere else entirely. I suppose that can look a little scary. You played folk as a teenager. Who were your folk heroes at the time? Well I played in a Folk Club, not playing exclusively folk music though. It’s where I first heard the blues too, which combined with the storytelling aspects of folk music were both pretty defining for me. Once you co-wrote a song with your father. How was that experience different compared to your usual songwriting method?

Why did you record the latest record in California? We went there initially because Nick Launay recommended a studio, now we’ve made two records there so it sort of feels like a second home for the band. It’s a very intriguing part of the world for us. How did it feel to play in the legendary Abbey Road studios? It was great! It’s an amazing time capsule of a place and we felt very honoured to get to play there. Is Another Night On Earth a sequel to One Night On Earth on Nux Vomica? One follows on from the other.

It was very easy actually. My dad and I make lots of things together and always have so it comes very naturally.

In the new song Out From The Valley And Into The Stars, you namecheck Long Tall Sally. Are you a Little Richard fan?

You covered Dominoes by Syd Barrett. Is your song Scarecrow a reference to the Pink Floyd song?

Yes indeed, who isn’t?

Not entirely. Why was Nux Vomica a much darker album than the debut? Our debut consisted of the first songs I ever wrote when I was 14 years old, so they were very adolescent I suppose and I still hadn’t quite worked out what I wanted to do yet. Nux is more our style I think. Third album Sun Gangs has a broader, more epic sound. Why did you decide on that style? I really never decide these things consciously, it just came out like that. Bad drugs didn’t help. While making it, what was it like living out of a garage and working in The Flaming Lips’ studio in Oklahoma? That was a very surreal time. It was fascinating to spend so much time there, right at the tip of the Bible Belt and at the very centre of that wild and often bewildering country. We played a lot of music and had lots of great adventures.

The Veils

20.00

You were your own producer this time. Why did you do that and how did it turn out? I felt I knew what I wanted to do so didn’t want someone else in there muddying the bath water so to speak. It turned out great. Why did you hire Bill Price to mix the album? He’s just the best in the world, it’s as simple as that. He celebrated his 50th year making records while we were in the studio with him. Man, he really knows what he’s doing. The Pearl sounds a bit similar to Talking Heads. Is the cover of your latest record a further reference to Talking Heads, namely the song Burning Down The House? You have a very literal mind! Everybody loves the sight of someone else’s house on fire.

HISTORY A38 is the reincarnation of ‘Tripolie’, a Ukrainian stone-carrier ship, built in 1968. The name comes from Artemovsk, which is the ship prototype, and this one was the 38th unit of the ‘Artemovsk’ class. The re-building project lasted for one and a half years. Architects, ship engineers, acoustic designers, electricians, musicians and promoters contributed their skills and experience to make it a both artist and audience friendly place. After years of constant development, A38 has become a cultural entertainment centre with international programme, a restaurant, five bars, one main concert hall, open-air terraces and lounges all in one aboard as one of the most fascinating venues in Budapest. Since its opening it became the flagship of Budapest nightlife, a must-see spectacle on the Danube with scenic view and one of Europe’s coolest clubs, which has been voted ‘The World’s Greatest Bar’ – according to the poll of Lonely Planet in 2012.

EXHIBITION SPACE 7

György Czabán

What can this machine-wonder do? Late January, the A38 docked at the Buda pier for the second time, starting another decade. What could be a more worthy way to evoke the past ten years than the photos of György Czabán? More than ten years ago, when the Ukrainian stone-transporting barge was ordered to be torn apart and then rebuilt in the Komarno ship factory, photographer György Czaban took his camera to take pictures with the curiosity of a child and the light hand of a natural. He went closer and closer to the workers, the wires, the ruins, and unraveled the secrets, past and present, from the whale-like structure, while playing sensitively with the rhythm, mass and weight proportions of the elements encompassing the space.

apr. 15. may 03. 11.00 18.00

Few, if only the best photographers are regarded to represent a unique world and vision with their pictures, and at the same time they also present an untouchable atmosphere. György Czabán definitely belongs to this group, as his pictures are not only exciting, but they also open a completely new sensual window to the world. If you think that you know the ship from every angle, we strongly recommend you to watch the Czabán exhibition in order to open new perspectives, because we are working for the future! The exhibition can be visited every day from 11.00 to 18.00 with registration in advance. Please register by telephone before your visit on the following number: +36 1 464 39
