This Portland-based band follows the European indie tradition of soft vocals, fuzzy guitars and sweet melancholy. They were founded by Ruban Nielson formerly living in New Zealand and leading The Mint Chicks, and now building in 60s psychedelia with UMO. They will be preceded by Dutch garage rockers Mozes and the Firstborn.

The band have already released three albums, of which the last one, Infinity Pool came out this spring, so you can be sure that the show will be currrent and VERY 2013...

German techno founding father, star producer, remixer and all-around scene catalyst is back in the game, visiting Budapest with an attitude. All hail the Chancellor, Heiko Laux (and celebrate the birthday of Hungary’s biggest online electronic music portal, Soundhead.hu while you’re at it)!

Les Hurlements d’Léo Psycho Mutants 09

20.00

If you like fun (and why wouldn’t you), you will love Les hurlements d’Léo, a group of eight bohemian Frenchmen playing on guitars, saxophones, trumpet, accordion and contrabass to produce a sound that won’t leave anyone standing in one place – just like the support band Psycho Mutants, who are into psychedelic swing. And you will be into it, too!

We Butter the Bread with Butter

Betraying the Martyrs 04 19.00

German and French deathcore bands Betraying the Martyrs and WBTBWB are luckily touring in Europe simultaneously and are guarantee for a killer night, but there is more! From France also, comes Shoot the Girl First and from Hungary, A38’s annual talent contest’s 2012 winners, Subliminal Merger.

29

20.30

Danish duo Broke are often associated with Reptile Youth - the same energetic electronic rock with post-punk influences and they have also toured together for a long time. Talking about post-punk, Hangmás is the one-band authentic Budapest post-punk revival with catchy synths and guitars and a powerful frontman evoking the presence of Ian Curtis...

23

19.30

Arizona Baby have been around for ten years but this is their first time to come and play in Hungary. This Spanish trio is all about psychedelic rock, blues, and country, but they list other influences like ”betrayed women” and ”hallucinated preacherman”. If you come to this show, you can also see the Hungarian Johnny Cash tribute band Nyughatatlan named after the translated theme of the biopic Walk the Line.

4 interview

Amanda Palmer ”Women can be incredibly competitive” Please, tell us a few words about your band! The drummer of The Grand Theft Orchestra was Michael McQuilken, who is your ex-lover. And now your touring with a new drummer. Yes, Michael went on to pursue his theater career, which was a better idea than staying on the road. The new drummer, Thor, is an incredible musician as well, I know him from his touring time with SWANS, one of my favorite bands of all time. Some of your outspoken statements and on-stage manifestations resulted in open confrontation with journalists and people from the music industry. You also addressed a letter to Sinéad O’Connor regarding her legal dispute with Miley Cyrus. What was the harshest reaction you received whether from a journalist, musician or the audience? I think the main problem is just that women can’t figure out which course to take, and the arguments themselves trap us in deeper boxes. It’s a classic problem between the various waves of feminism, but I find the discourse fascinating. The reactions coming from other musicians or journalists are usually just fear-based, which is where all the angry energy is coming from. Women can be incredibly competitive. There are many ways to use the mass media as a tool for heating up the interest of the audience. What does the mass media mean for you as an artist? Luckily, the mass media has mostly ignored me. I’m more interested in the new mass media: Twitter, the internet, the way we can simply communicate with each other without the old tools. That is where honesty and change are coming from nowadays. Is there any artistic interaction between your and your husband Neil Gaiman? Do you give each other advices? You will also release a record

11

20.00

called An Evening with Neil Gaiman and Amanda Palmer. We went on a tour a few years ago and made a wonderful 3-disc recording together that we’re about to release... It’s a mixture of spoken stories, songs we sang together, and questions from the audience. It’s a wonderful livingroom like album, and we’re very proud of it. How will you build up the campaign around your new record? Which sources will you use? I have no idea. And I’m glad I have no idea. What other artistic plans do you have besides The Grand Theft Orchestra? Do you plan to restart the Dresden Dolls or will you continue performing with Jason Webley? I don’t have any artistic plans beyond this winter… I have to finish a book I’m writing and then I’ll decide what to do and who to do it with. I don’t plan very far ahead on purpose. What kind of advice can you give to talented young artists on how to break through, especially if they live in Eastern Europe, far from the center of rock n roll? The same rules don’t change. Make your material good, first and foremost. Play, play, play and write and then emerge. And when you emerge, take every gig and talk to every person. Once you know your material is good and you have a real, live, local, human audience who supports you, THEN the questions of label and internet and Kickstarter and all that shit start to matter. But first you have to become a ready artist, or you screw yourself.

HISTORY A38 is the reincarnation of ‘Tripolie’, a Ukranian stone-carrier ship, built in 1968. The name comes from Artemovsk, which is the ship prototype, and this one was the 38th unit of the ‘Artemovsk’ class. The re-building project lasted for one and a half years. Architects, ship engineers, acoustic designers, electricians, musicians and promoters contributed their skills and experience to make it a both artist and audience friendly place. After years of constant development, A38 has become a cultural entertainment centre with international programme, a restaurant, five bars, one main concert hall, open-air terraces and lounges all in one aboard as one of the most fascinating venues in Budapest. Since its opening it became the flagship of Budapest nightlife, a must-see spectacle on the Danube with scenic view and one of Europe’s coolest clubs, which has been voted ‘The World’s Greatest Bar’ – according to the poll of Lonely Planet in 2012.

Károly Minyó Szert:

Yakitori in the Time of Fukeiki The artist known as “Minyó” was born in New Delhi in 1955. He as part of the FoToNoIrE photo circle is documenting the everyday work of Megálló Group, a foundation helping drug users and people dealing with other addictions. He has an insight on their mission that not many people have and he is really thoughtful of using the camera in the right moments, and keeping it in its case in others. The photo series presented this time is constantly changing, and its earlier form was exhibited in the Hungarian Parliament, and at Radiator Gallery before, and is part of the selection of this year’s Delhi Photo Festival. It is also special because this Minyó Szert’s first series that contain color pictures.

20.00 FoToNoIrE represents a journey from the dark to the light both mentally and photographically. For Minyó Szert, photography is both a way of social interaction and therapy. We should look into the camera like we do in the mirror to see what others see when they look at us. It is never easy, but worth the effort. The exhibition opens at November 5 at 20:00. You can visit the exhibition everyday between 10 AM and 6 PM until November 24. Please call +36 1 464 3940 before your visit.
