Just like the Danish fairytale with same name, Esben & The Witch’s music is not happy and careless, not even at the first impression. After gaining BBC’ appreciation at the very debut,

Masala Sound System

Backfire! 18

18

Masala actually is not even a real band: it is a set of traditional folk and experimental electronic musicians that happen to be friends and have created something very unique and exclusive. However weird it may sound like at first, whether you are a fan of Polish, oriental or reggae music, you’ll find yourself a brand new experience listening and dancing to their music.

George Harrison Tribute Band

Dutch hardcore is very much alive these days, and Backfire! are one of the bands who have started it all back in the 90s. They first followed the New York hardcore scene, but after tragically losing their drummer and finding a new one, they turned towards punk, still keeping their aggressivity and heaviness. To make the show more authentic, we have added Social Free Face to the line-up, who made many Hungarians grow up on HC.

A night saluting the immortal greatness of the Silent Beatle George Harrison and the Rolling Stones’ Keith Richards with the best Hungarian guitarists These tribute bands were formed especially in celebration of the 50-year-old Stones and the 70th anniversary of the Harrison’s birth. You can be a fan of beat or a true rocker, you cannot miss this special jubilee!

Cult of Luna The Ocean, Lo! 01

20.00

Coming straight from the same town as Meshuggah, they are the perfect example for metal that dares to be different. After leaving a blank of five years in their creative history, they return in 2013 with the vintage sci-fi inspired album Vertikal to conquer the world, starting with the eager European fans. Another big name for the evening is German post-metal band The Ocean, supported by Australian Lo! who are newcomers that the fans have raised big hopes about.

Invasion of the girls! In this night not only our beloved Dork will represent beat-lover ladies, but the young, beautiful and talented Rebekah will perform a set of perfectionist techno that already enchanted the audience in Berghain and Trésor. She is praised by Luke Slater, Pär Grindvik and Surgeon, to mention only a few of them, and she already has a contract at CLR. We better watch out for this English lady!

Death Rattle

Lites & Cokes 08

If you are a fan of Fever Ray, Depeche Mode and prefer any shade of dark electro, you will love this mysterious, London-based duo. Keeping both the music and the visuals in their hands, “He&I” present us rituals instead of concerts that involve you physically and touches your soul to the deepest. A little less intense but experimental as they are, Light & Cokes don’t leave any shoes ungazed in the Budapest music scene.

The Kiosk team have booked a real specialty for you in April: Thomas Moen Hermansen alias Prins Thomas is a dj with rare knowledge of bit rock, jazz, and electronica and started making his own disco-inspired tracks in Norway in 2003. If you are into eclecticism, you will love this party that can be called practically anything but boring.

Hungarian experimental electronica on our roof terrace! Lőrinc Barabás, celebrated trumpet player of his legendary Eklektric band, started playing solo, but he managed to still sound like a bunch of musicians, as he uses a loop station with a wide spectrum of effects. Krisztina Dányi, known as morningdeer is a talented young lady who is on her way from lo-fi to professional with two new musicians András Halmos and Bálint Bolcsó.

Roots reggae band Danakil was founded a few years ago and soon grew the biggest French collective. They won the award of Best Reggae Album in 2012 and BEst Dub Album and Best Live Album in 2013, and besides the nine musicians, they bring Senegal-born Natty Jean to their shows. On the Hungarian counterpart, PASO ska band’s side project Roots Rockers cover their own songs reggae-style.

One of today’s most prominent house producers, Ray - also known as The Pigeonboy Wonder originates from Nigeria but is based in Germany where he is the head of the Ama label. The HiFly crew now bring you this absolutely marvellous and creative guy who, behind all his modesty, is his genre’s genius. Support djs are: Yvel & Tristan, James Grow, Sobek.

On the occasion of the release of their eleventh album, Brief Nocturnes and Dreamless Sleep, Los Angeles progrockers conquer the stage of the ship again. This time, they will bring their new singer, Enchant’s Ted Leonard and drummer Jimmy Keagan who neither is unknown for the band’s avid fans. Come and celebrate the bloom of progressive rock on this show, supported by Beardfish and Sound of Contact.

Hiperactive women from Hungary... Actually, hiperactive women from Ghana and Armenia, living in Hungary for a long time now with massive fanbases. Sena Dagadu, singer of funk-rock-hiphop band Irie Maffia just dropped her second solo album with a bit more of soul and a lot more of her, and the dance-punk band of Armenian sister and brother Gaya and Karen Arutyunyan is releasing their very first album Playground on the exact date! We are proud having them in this country and we want to hear more of them!

Without Caravan Palace, there would be no electroswing music at all. Their story is quite funny, as they were writing music for vintage porn movies, giving some electronic vibe to the traditional django music played with trumpet, clarinet, violin and double bass and it turned out to be a lot better than expected. Gill’us is also one experimenting Frenchman singing practically everything that sound good mixed with innovative electronica. For a special dinner of offer in A38 Restaurant, see page 9.

Sophie Hunger 04 19.30

Émilie Jeanne-Sophie Welti is a well-known pop-jazz singer who often sings for Erik Truffaz Quartet, and this is going to be the first time that she performs in Budapest. Started with a band called Fisher, Sophie soon wrote her first solo album, Sketches on Sea in her bedroom. Since then she has released four more albums and gained international success, but kept her sincere and kind, the girl next door-type personality. Before watching her perform with a five-piece band, check out Vera Jónás, a singer with acoustic guitar, too.

Haight-Ashbury teleport us to an era where hippies roamed the earth singing and playing guitars in the name of love. The English trio took their name from the epicenter of the San Franciscan hippie movement and make psychedelic music more complex than you would believe! Another bohemian team, My Name Is Music arrive from Austria and show us what indie rock sounds like performed by a boy and a girl in clown suits. Before them, we have Hungarian beach pop band Summer Schatzies and Fran Palermo.

Now the Austrian indie rockers catch up with our audience and play with other great hiphop acts like Monstaz and Halott Pénz (“Dead Money”). Come and enjoy the springtime foolishness in the Austro-Hungarian Anarchy!

6 ON THE COVER

Don’t fear the witch

Esben & The Witch are the perfect representatives of commonplace-like 21st century youth problems: melancholy, introversion and alienation - the difference is that they fill them with new content, and on 16 May you can see it for yourself from Matador Records newcomers. The trio emerged in 2009 with a do-it-yourself kind of self-management: they performed literally everywhere they could and recorded their songs only for the sake of the fans of their live shows. The band chose their name from a horrifying Danish tale with a witch who cuts the throat of men in their sleep and tries to cook the little boy, Esben alive - very much in the manner of Hansel & Gretel. The band of Rachel Davies create an eerie atmosphere without being too gothic and build in post-rock elements but not the usual panels. Even the BBC chose them in their Sound of 2011 list, but then debut album Violet Cries surpassed all expectations and proved the band more significant than that. After its release at Matador, Esben & The Witch have toured The XX and Foals and conquered the sad hearts of Cure, Siouxsie & The Banshees fans, or Mono fans, and now they arrive with their second album Wash the Sins Not Only the Face to A38 on a day when noone will mind the rain for sure.

HISTORY A38 is the reincarnation of ‘Tripolie’, a Ukranian stone-carrier ship, built in 1968. The name comes from Artemovsk, which is the ship prototype, and this one was the 38th unit of the ‘Artemovsk’ class. The re-building project lasted for one and a half years. Architects, ship engineers, acoustic designers, electricians, musicians and promoters contributed their skills and experience to make it a both artist and audience friendly place. After years of constant development, A38 has become a cultural entertainment centre with international programme, a restaurant, five bars, one main concert hall, open-air terraces and lounges - all in one aboard as one of the most fascinating venues in Budapest. Since its opening it became the flagship of Budapest nightlife, a must-see spectacle on the Danube with scenic view and one of Europe’s coolest clubs, which has been voted ‘The World’s Greatest Bar’ – according to the poll of Lonely Planet in 2012.

Maria Chilf: Invisible Ground-Plan 14 May-2 June

The world of Maria Chilf is made from projections of the subconscious. Her drawings and paintings have networks branching like trees or streams, but in her works the elements of nature always have a touch of artificialness. Her pictures process memories, while her objects and installations have another, more critical attitude. This time she tells her life story with her peculiar transposals. The diverse material is filled with wallpaintings and unified with her delicate but always cruel self-analysis.

A video installation of the limited environment of an elementary school on the banks of Maros is also part of the exhibition. Opening on 14 May 2013 at 8 PM.

Franz Liszt Chamber Orchestra The story of Franz Liszt Chamber Orchestra’s success started in the early 1970s on Mediterranean-sea cruises where they played on the ships Mermot and Renaissance and this is where the band met globally acclaimed soloists who they played with and asked the orchestra to join them on international tours. Maurice André, Mstislav Rostropovich, JeanPierre Rampal and Isaac Stern, just to mention a few names were the key to the Hungarian band’s unbelievable European, North- and South-American, Japanese, and Australian tours in the 70s and 80s.

„We had no role model those days” - says art director János Rolla. „We had to figure out everything on our own, as there were only four or five bands around in the world who were celebrated chamber orchestras. We tried to collect information constantly. When the Moscow Chamber Orchestra was playing at the Hungarian Academy of Music, we noticed that they do everything different than the I Musici players. Then we saw the illustrious English Chamber Orchestra with Benjamin Britten and astonishing technical virtuosity. After seeing all that, we decided to stay where we started. Franz Liszt Chamber Orchestra have always had a trademark sound that we have to redefine from time to time.
