“Guilty are always suspicious”

An interview with Lydia Lunch

Before her December show, we asked a few questions to Lydia Lunch, the empress of no wave currently residing in Spain, about politics, food and of course, music. You started making political speeches in 1982 against Reagen, you left USA for Spain because of George W. Bush. How is America different with the democrats in charge? Worse than ever. There is no difference between the political parties. They are both puppets of the corporate elite. Higher unemployment. Rising poverty. Corporate kleptomania. America has become an even more corrupt police state, spying on the entire planet. But then guilty are always suspicious. Spain is not the first European country that comes into your mind in connection with rock n roll. Why have you chosen exactly Barcelona as your base? Do you like living anonymously? Where I live, which changes every few years has nothing to do with rock and roll. I move for any number of reasons. Architecture. Collaborators. Economy. Change of pace. No matter where I live…I live anonymously. Or perhaps notoriously. Were there any strong female characters in music or art who you looked up to when you started your career? Madalyn Murray O’Hair, the leader of the American Atheist Movement. Are there any strong female characters today? Carla Bozulich / Evangelista …Admiral Grey of Cellular Chaos…Jessie Evans…Exene Cervenka, to name a few. What’s the difference between Lydia Lunch now and you in the 80s and 90s? The same only better. What do you think was the most important thing about the No Wave movement? That is came, it left quickly and it left a horrible stain on the musical landscape that people are still trying to understand more than 30 years later. How do you see the reunion of Swans? Is there any band you wish they would someday reunite? Jesus Lizard was the best of all the reunions I have seen so far. What kind of music you listen to? How do you see rock music today? I rarely listen to music. I am too busy making it. But when I do… instrumental music like Baba Zula from Istanbul. Steven Brown and Blaine Reininger. JG Thirlwell. Philippe Petit. For rock – Cellular Chaos. Monster Magnet. Union Carbide. And rap….Scarface, Mystical, Ice Cube, Wu Tang Clan You used to set up banquet feasts for fellow starving artists and musicians and even released a cookbook. Can you recall the best ever meal you were served by other famous musician or artist? Any meal that overstimulates the senses and leads to an orgy of pleasure.

When it comes to simple street food, what are your preferences? What is the best fast food in Europe? I don’t eat food off the street. I like to know how many hands were on the food I ate. How can you describe your fans and listeners? Long suffering geniuses. What is your worst bad habit? Please my friend…use your imagination.

Opening hours Ticket desk, info: MON-SUN 6:30 to 23:00 or until the end of the events. Restaurant: MON-SAT 11:00 to 00:00

HISTORY A38 is the reincarnation of ‘Tripolie’, a Ukrainian stone-carrier ship, built in 1968. The name comes from Artemovsk, which is the ship prototype, and this one was the 38th unit of the ‘Artemovsk’ class. The re-building project lasted for one and a half years. Architects, ship engineers, acoustic designers, electricians, musicians and promoters contributed their skills and experience to make it a both artist and audience friendly place. After years of constant development, A38 has become a cultural entertainment centre with international programme, a restaurant, five bars, one main concert hall, open-air terraces and lounges all in one aboard as one of the most fascinating venues in Budapest. Since its opening it became the flagship of Budapest nightlife, a must-see spectacle on the Danube with scenic view and one of Europe’s coolest clubs, which has been voted ‘The World’s Greatest Bar’ – according to the poll of Lonely Planet in 2012.

While Đorđević is working on operas and other theatre pieces, Maraš is into experimental electronica. But one day, a Belgrade radio station asked them to create something together and that was a match made in heaven and Canzone Distorte (Distorted Song) was born. For more contemporary sounds, check out Svetlana’s collaboration with the Blank Disc duet who often happen to play found objects instead of instruments.

EXHIBITION 9

Zoltán Ádám: Rhythms

03

20.00 On the upcoming exhibition of Zoltán Ádám, one of the most important elements of his life, music plays the major role. You might noticed some musical references in his earlier works, but this time his pictures centre around rhythm. The most significant motif and symbol this time is the drum, inspired by a blackbird that hid into a wooden barrel and started knocking on its walls from the inside. Ádám wondered: what would it be like to hear the sound of a drum from the inside? So he started painting on wood cut into drum shapes. Zoltán Ádám uses various methods and techniques to present a topic, as he earlier did with benches, chairs, stairs and buildings. This way, his subject becomes abstract and that is the exact opposite of what we would call an „objet trouvé”. The objects are no longer material, but the conveyor of something intellectual.

His playful and free experimentation, his subtle, never sarcastic humour, and this behaviour of a noble researcher is present again on Ádám’s new works. Besides the paintings, many drawings will be exhibited with several details that show the deepness of his explorations. The exhibition will be opened on December 3 8 PM by painter István Losonczy featuring Kálmán Ádám and Zoltán Ádám. You can visit the exhibition everyday between 10 AM and 6 PM until December 23. Please call +36 1 464 3940 before your visit.

NEWS As you may already know it, A38 was ten years old in April 2013, and this not only means a whole year of celebration, but also the time of the repair works due in every decade. Therefore, after we cleaned it well after the New Year’s Eve party, we send the ship to Slovakia, into to Komárno Shiprepair Yard, where workers will thoroughly examine the bottom, the ribs and all parts that remained underwater in the last ten years. We will presumably reopen in February, but it depends on how the work is proceeding. We will keep you posted about the works and the exact date of reopening on our Facebook, Tumblr, Twitter, and homepage. Until then, we have organised a Monster Magnet show for January 29 (see page 3) in Club 202. During the maintenance period, you can still buy tickets online at www.a38.hu or visit our temporary ticket selling point, the Ticketportal office at 49 BajcsyZsilinszky Street, Budapest.
