primary PYP Evaluation The Primary School has just had its first Primary Years Programme (PYP) evaluation. The evaluation team consisted of two very experienced PYP practitioners, one being the head of our region. Their report will be with us in just a few months’ time but in the meantime they have showered us with praise, including: ‘You’re a great school.’ ‘The children don’t just know the language of the Learner Profile, they live it.’ ‘Teachers were really reflective; they articulated the journey they have been on & they have expectations of development.’ ‘Planning, teaching & learning are areas of particular strength.’ ‘You have obviously taken the self-study process seriously, included the whole team and written an exceptional report.’ Thank you to the board members and parents who spoke to the visiting team. Your feedback was invaluable and will help us plan for further development. A very special thank-you to our teaching staff who provide worthwhile educational opportunities for children’s growth and development. We can be justly proud of our school.

Grade 4W The students randomly picked student profiles and attitudes out of a hat and were tasked with writing an acrostic poem. Each word or phrase had to relate back to the learner profile or attitude.

primary Grade 4 - Our fraction lunch After completing an activity in class about fractions, the students asked whether or not it would be possible to host a “real fraction” lunch. Here are the photos of students trading fractions of their food.

Grade 5 Exhibition The Grade 5 exhibition was a great success. The students set out their central ideas and researched their chosen fields. They went out into the community to interview experts and visit places of interest. Visitors and parents were also willing to share their expertise with students, and one such person was Elspeth Erikson. Elspeth spent a morning working with a group of students and had great things to say about them; “It’s good to help children so turned on by learning…You have a very electronically savvy and knowledgeable group there”. We owe Elspeth a HUGE “thank-you” for her assistance.

ELCB and Grade 5E buddies ELC has been working on their unit How We Express Ourselves and inquiring into the many forms and uses for writing. One of these forms is recipes. In conjunction with our Grade 5 buddies, we used a recipe and made our own pizzas. The activity required reading, measuring, mixing, kneading and, most importantly, following the specific directions of the recipe. The pizzas were most certainly a huge success! Another important aspect to this activity is the work and relationship between the ELC and the Grade 5. From the beginning of January each year, ELC-B and Grade 5 spend one period a week together getting to know each other, developing friendships and acquiring new skills. It is a time which both classes look forward to. This year, with our unit revolving around writing and with the use of our mail box system, the interaction and communication between the two groups has dramatically increased . Both classes have spent much time writing to each other through letters and pictures. ELC-B wishes to thank Grade 5E for their caring, enthusiasm and commitment to us!

primary Primary Poetry Slam At Family Story Night on May 24, primary school students and parents enjoyed a night of poetry. We read poems and wrote our own. Some students were so thrilled with our “open mic” poetry stylings that they wanted to perform twice. Of course in true beatnik style we all snapped our fingers after each person shared a poem instead of clapping. This hip evening of fun was attended by 18 families. For parents and children moving to a new country 1. Don’t give everyone you meet your life story. 2. Don’t force people to try to understand what being a Third Culture Kid (TCK) is. 3. Do make friends who are not TCKs. 4. Do take the time to try to understand others. 5. Don’t close yourself off from others. 6. Don’t wait for people to come. 7. Do check out different student groups. 8. Do remember that you are never alone.

Primary school students entertained a packed auditorium with an impressive display of music, singing, dancing and comedy. Well done everyone. We certainly DO have talent at AISM!

Every year, as part of our PYP/MYP Transition Programme, the students host a dance to welcome the Grade 5 students to middle school and bid farewell to the Grade 8 students as they move into high school. The students help to plan, organize and execute the dance, from deciding the theme to advertising the DJs . Thanks go to the Grade 8 students who shared their ideas and pitched in to set up the billboards. We also thank a great group of Grade 6 girls under Ms. Letticia Costa’s guidance, for their enthusiasm and effort to make the end of the 2011-12 school year memorable. See you all in August!

secondary WHAT A FINISH! In the last 3 weeks we have been dazzled by exceptional student performance and unbelievable dedication from faculty. Just look at the line-up: High school show Grease Secondary school art exhibition Interschool track and field win Academic awards night Sports awards banquet A Habitat for Humanity build Graduation And still to come‌. Middle School Concert In The Garden Students and faculty at AISM have shone until the very end of the academic year. It’s this tenacity and commitment that makes our school exceptional. Students have given their best, and so many of them have impressed us in more than one field. I would like to pay tribute to each student for demonstrating, so well, our core values; striving for excellence, living ethically and engaging in so many levels of learning. This could not happen, however, without the energy, innovation and dedication of our faculty members. Thank you all for helping every student at AISM shine. Colleen Fletcher Secondary Principal

Secondary School ACADEMIC AWARDS On Monday May 21, awards for achievement and academic excellence, as well as many for engagement and determination in learning, were handed out to our secondary school students. The evening was also an opportunity to showcase and celebrate students’ accomplishments in service learning projects, and to recognize the contributions made by the newly-established student leadership committees. Congratulations to all winners!

Secondary School Art Exhibition On Thursday, May 24, the entire secondary school exhibited a selection of artworks that they have created during the year. The exhibition included painting, sketching, prints, sculpture, textural work and conceptual art, as well as musical and dramatic performances from our Grade 10 and 11 students. Well done to everyone involved and thank-you, Mr Pike, for putting the exhibition together.

health Training Courses Completed by AISM Staff Last month staff members Sue Rhodes, Mark Carter, Tania Ribeiro and Lee Clagnaz as well as Grade 11 student, Pedro Barbosa, successfully completed a course in CPR, First Aid and the use of the AED machine. Congratulations go to Wayne and Sue for a successful accreditation visit from the American Heart Association. This now makes AISM the only training centre in Mozambique, and Wayne the only First Aid instructor for the American Heart Association in Mozambique. Three further courses are planned for the next academic year. Sue Lindsay-Rea School Nurse

appreciation We owe a very great debt of thanks to Ms Sonia Dawson for the many hours of work she has put into sewing for the school over the years. Not only did she produce most of the costumes for our high school production of Grease this year, but she has also spent a great deal of time in recent months creating beautiful AISM graduation sashes that will be used for many years to come. Thank-you Ms Sonia!

SONIA DAWSON AISM staff members volunteer to teach English to our school workers and local community residents after school. And while we have had a number of teachers and parents step forward each year, Sri Kannan, Wilma Bayaua, and Ben Damaso have been devotedly part of the service program for four consecutive years! We applaud you for your generous time and efforts.

parent A very big THANK-YOU to all sponsors that kindly donated raffle prizes. Without sponsors this type of fund-raising would not be possible. The PTA would also like to thank Class Reps for all their support in organizing Mayfair 2012, and the many parent volunteers who gave up their time to work to make the event the tremendous success that it was.

A Yellow Raft in Blue Water Michael Dorris

This time about mothers and daughters … “Michael Dorris has crafted a fierce saga of three generations of women, beset by hardships and torn by angry secrets, yet inextricably joined by the bonds of kinship. Starting in the present day and moving backward, the novel is told in the voices of the three women: fifteen-year-old partblack Rayona; her American Indian mother, Christine, consumed by tenderness and resentment toward those she loves; and the fierce and mysterious Ida, mother and grandmother whose haunting secrets, betrayals, and dreams echo through the years, braiding together the strands of the shared past.” [goodreads.com] And… it’s in our library!

Unclaimed Goods Articles of clothing, school supplies and all other student paraphernalia not claimed by the last day of school will be donated to a local charity.

Four of our Grade 8 boys, now well-known on campus as the band Statement, recorded their first CD earlier this month entitled No Rabbits in Wonderland. Henrik Karlsen, Lucas Ratigan, Owald Van Schalkwyk and Will Davis have performed at various AISM functions over the past year, including Mayfair, where their CD sold out! Congratulations to the boys from Statement on all their success. Congratulations to Michael West, Grade 11, who won the Standard Bank Men’s U18 Tennis Championship over the weekend of May 26/27.

WELL DONE MICHAEL!

Do you know someone who deserves a pat on the back and two thumbs up? Lets us know!

sports AISJ Girls’ Soccer Tournament

The Varsity Girls soccer team capped an incredible season by winning the AISJ 6-a-Side Soccer Tournament in Johannesburg 3 weeks ago. Twelve teams participated, coming from Lusaka, Kinshasa, Luanda, Gaborone and from all over South Africa. Undefeated in the Round Robin phase, our girls proceeded steadily though their quarter-final and semi-final games until they reached a tough final match against the AISJ home team. Tired after 5 games, our girls dug deep and played some brilliant soccer, holding AISJ to a 0-0 draw at full time. This set up a penalty shoot-out for the Championship, which, after the dust settled, was claimed by AISM who scored on all three of their penalty shots. Congratulations to the girls and to Coach Sam and the girls for a spectacular season! A special mention should be made of young Anne Sellies, Gr 6, who had an outstanding tournament, scoring 9 out of our 12 goals!

Congratulations to Kelly-Ann Abbott on the birth of her son Niklaus on May 20th. We wish her joy and happiness with him.

sports Interschool Track and Field competition On Friday May 25th, the AISM Buffalos took part in an interschool track and field competition against local schools Trichardt (TSCE), the Italian School, Emmanuel, Christian Academy (CAM) and the Portuguese School (EPM). There were some excellent individual performances on the day and it was a close competition. In the end AISM came out on top by a margin of only 2 points! Thanks to AISM students and staff who helped out at the event and congratulations to coaches Wayne Thompson, Mark Carter, Peter Wandera and Henry Ferguson.

Boys’ Soccer Tour to AISJ Our Varsity and Junior Varsity Boys’ teams recently travelled to Johannesburg to compete in the annual AISJ Soccer tournament. Both teams played very well and were unfortunate not to come home with the trophy. They each enjoyed 2 wins and a draw during the group stages, but after progressing to the knock-out stages, Varsity unfortunately lost their quarter final match in a penalty shoot-out and Junior Varsity lost a very closely-contested semi-final match. Both teams played impressive soccer and should be very proud of their accomplishments.
