Architectural plans for the next phase of AISM’s Facilities Master Plan on display in the foyer on Secondary Student Conference day.

MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR Presenting AISM’s Campus Facilities Master Plan This week, architect John van Wyk of COA (PTY) Ltd., made a special visit to AISM to personally present the first draft of our Campus Facilities Master Plan. In the early morning and late afternoon on Tuesday, Mr. van Wyk greeted parents, students and staff as they stopped to view the plans proposed for new school buildings, which were on display in the school lobby. During the day he took the time to speak with some of our 11th grade science students who are currently studying environmental systems and societies. They discussed some of the pressing environmental issues that relate specifically to AISM’s expansion projects. At Tuesday evening's Town Hall meeting, Mr. van Wyk made a detailed presentation to the Board of Directors and interested community members, resulting in a constructive exchange of ideas, questions and concerns. The Campus Facilities Master Plan will remain on view in our school lobby throughout next week. If you have comments, questions or suggestions, please forward to aisminfo@aism-moz.com. Your involvement in AISM’s plans for growth and expansion is important and very much appreciated.

Primary School Message from the Principal Isn’t it amazing how Science is really all around us. This morning whilst I was teaching Visual Arts in Sangeeta’s Early Learning Class (ELC) she was leading an experiment into air as a form of matter. Her questions were thought-provoking and informative and developed the children’s thinking further. How do you know air is there? How does this work? What happened … how can you change what happened? Why did you do it that way? Her children are aged 3, 4 and 5 and yet they articulated themselves with confidence and understanding. They made connections to the real world and posed questions in order to drive their learning forward. They were enthralled! You all know that I am absolutely convinced that the PYP is the best educational programme available to young children – and today I saw another example of children understanding their world – without text books and drills. Brilliant! Primary School Principal

One of the lines of inquiry in our ELC Unit of Inquiry ‘Who We Are’ is ways to learn new things. Our class discussion led to things that the children wanted to learn - things they had never done before. ELC-S students wanted to learn how to build a house. We asked Mr. Carlos and Mr. Jeque if they could help us build a little house from reeds and logs something we could use inside the classroom. This activity tied up very well with our Measurement unit in mathematics. The children learned to measure and use tools responsibly, and also proved themselves to be risk-takers in taking on a big project like this. However, we COULD NOT have done this without Mr. Carlos and Mr. Jeque’s help.

Primary School LEARNING ENVIRONMENT AND THE PYP “Students can engage with authentic, transdisciplinary content when they are able to engage with the learning environment in an active way”. The physical environment is of critical importance in the PYP as it reflects our beliefs about learning. Flexibility is necessary for inquiry and to enable collaborative work. Whether the focus is on learning via electronic media, or the need to provide evidence of thinking in the classroom, spaces are arranged to support learning and show students’ progress over time.

AISM Primary School’s Got TALENT!

March 20th was a toe-tapping, clap-along, OOOOH and AHHHH kind of evening. AISM hosted its annual Primary School Talent Show. After the two-week audition process, more than 70 students were selected to perform. The evening was a buffet of entertainment with acts such as “The Three Little Pigs”, dance routines, magic tricks, instrumental groups, soloists and many, many more. What makes this annual event even more special is that it is all student-initiated. Students write scripts, plan choreography, create arrangements and rehearse all on their own, with only a little support from the talent show committee. Thanks for coming out to cheer on the incredible performers who were brave enough to share their talents with us. ~ Trina Haygaru

Our third MYP Personal Project Evening on April 10 celebrated the successful completion of the MYP Personal Project by all of our 32 candidates. Students were awarded their AISM Certificates and displayed booths featuring their project components for the community. The topics represented the diversity among our Grade 10 students from hip-hop dancing and animated film-making, to teaching and publishing. Congratulations to our Grade 10 students. We wish you the best as you enter the Diploma Program, and we hope that you feel your learning has been enriched by the Personal Project experience. This year-long culminating project for the MYP has already started for our Grade 9 students, and we look forward to another exciting array of creative ideas when the topic forms are submitted on Thursday, April 18.

The ‘Mozambique First’ exhibition was an experimental inter-disciplinary unit between humanities and languages which incorporated various subject areas of Mozambican geography, history, socio-economics, poetry and culture. A range of issues was explored including language, tourism, HIV and health, agriculture, minerals and the roles played by freedom fighters such as Samora Machel and Eduardo Mondlane. We also visited a village near Goba, which provided us with first-hand experience of rural living in Mozambique. Under the guidance of village elders we were able to collect a large amount of information in a short period of time: community mapping, daily routine, time trends, mobility mapping, expenditure charts, seasonal calendars and flow diagrams provided us with deeper insights into community studies. This information was put together in a presentation to parents which included songs, music, a capulana walk, videos and exhibits. Particularly impressive was the beautiful poetry written by the Grade 8 students about Maputo and Mozambique. Our Rhythm

STUDENT–LED CONFERENCES Learning in the classroom is one thing, but articulating your learning and demonstrating critical reflection, is quite another. I was so impressed by the secondary students at out student-led conferences this year. Not only did they discuss their accomplishments with great pride, but also recognised what they need to focus on in the future to improve their learning outcomes. Parents commented on the impressive detail of students’ reflections. Other parents noted the maturity that their children demonstrated when taking them through the steps of their learning. Thank-you to all the parents who came to school to share this important aspect of student learning. Nearly 90% of our secondary parent body attended these conferences. “By three methods we may learn wisdom: first by reflection, which is the noblest; second by imitation, which is the easiest; and third by experience, which is the bitterest” ~ Confucius (learnstreaming.com)

IB THEATRE STUDENTS PERFORM IN SWAZILAND

This was a bittersweet occasion for me, as I travelled with the Theatre students to Swaziland for what would be my last trip as a Theatre teacher at AISM. What better way than to take the crème de la crème of our secondary school drama students on a tour that would reward them with a standing ovation?! The Theatre students devised their own theatre piece based on the Adam and Eve monologues by Mark Twain and transposed this into physical theatre and dance inspired by Greek Chorus theatre and Pina Bausch. Their performance stunned the audience with dynamic choreography, costume design, lighting and multimedia. They then brought the roof down with laughter performing their now notorious “Bits of Shakespeare”. Costumes, special effects, sword-fighting and of course brilliantly-delivered Shakespearean wit earned them the accolades that they had worked hard for. On this occasion I would like to recognise the entire DP Theatre class of brilliant students. I have worked closely with these students for many years now and it certainly was a fitting way to close this chapter for me. Thank you to everyone who attended the Round Table discussions this week. On Monday a small group of parents and teachers gathered to discuss how to talk to kids about sex. During the discussion, parents and teachers, exchanged ideas and offered suggestions to each other and to the school as how to support students in their quest for information regarding sex and relationships. A few tips for talking about sex and relationships with teens: If your child is asking you questions, they are mature enough receive an honest answer. Before providing an answer, find out what they DO know. Education about “good touch/bad touch” is still important. Continue to build your teens’ self-esteem. Continue having “sex talks”. Start to include information about consent. Nip “locker room talk” in the bud. Talk honestly with kids about partying. Kids are thirsty for more information about healthy sexuality. *parts adapted from “The Healthy Sex Talk: Teaching Kids Consent Ages 1-21” at www.goodmenproject.”

AISM is a very diverse school with a large range of cultural, religious, and personal values held within the school community. This makes for interesting and lively discussions amongst classmates. One of the biggest concerns expressed by parents who attended the Round Table discussions was that they worry that their children may be getting too much information or incorrect information from peers or from the internet. We, as a school, greatly value the diversity at AISM and encourage you to continue to shape your child’s development within your own value system. We also encourage you to engage the school if you need advice on how to address the topic of sex and healthy relationships with your child.

Andre Keenoy Time to clean out your bookshelf! This is a good time of year to go through bookshelves and pass on books you’ve read and the kids have outgrown. We are collecting books of any kind in any language, magazines, and DVDs for the Used Book Sale at Mayfair. Please bring your donations to one of the libraries any time during regular library hours by Friday, May 10th, or just bring them with you when you come to Mayfair and drop them off at our booth. Contact the librarians (Andree Keenoy, or Nikki Jayne) if you have any questions. See you at Mayfair!

Photography Club Exhibition

From January to March the after-school Exploration and Photography Club was busy learning photographic skills and exploring the local area. We began with some instruction from Mr Eros on how to use light and perspective to create interesting pictures. Armed with these skills we explored the area above the Portuguese School in the aftermath of the flooding, the beach and the village around the school. The students, all from grades 5, 6 and 7, produced some excellent photographs which were displayed in the main entrance prior to the Easter holiday. ~ Lin Kay Street Address: Rua do Rio Raraga, 266, Bairro da Costa do Sol, Maputo Telephone: +258 2149 1994 /+258 2149 3306 / +258 2149 3359,

Andre Keenoy BOOK OF THE MONTH!

Snowdrops by A.D. Miller This is a crime story, as its title suggests: "snowdrop" is Moscow slang for a corpse concealed by snow, revealed when the thaw comes. At the start, though, the narrator, Nicholas, is naive enough to think it might be a love story. He is an expat lawyer working on behalf of foreign banks that want to lend money to Russian businesses, especially in the oil industry. In his own words, his job is smearing "lipstick on a pig" – sanitizing dodgy deals with covenants and sureties no one involved will respect anyway. (J.O’Connell, The Guardian) This is a Russia gleaming with call girls, fraudsters, overnight millionaires; but in which the old beg on snowy streets and tramps ring random doorbells seeking shelter from hypothermic death. The overriding theme is corruption and the way that morals can become corroded, but the novel is multi-layered; subtle rather than strident, and imbued with a bruised beauty. (Leyla Sanai, The Independent)

ONE BOOK ONE AISM The winners of our One Book One AISM competition were brilliant. It was a fierce competition and Daniel de Beer managed to answer some really difficult questions about the Vapostori, Mozambican spirits, Cahorra Bassa, totems and Zimbabwe. He was amazing, but Vlad Manuel was just one question behind all the time! They had to crawl under chairs to find clues and play the paper onion ball game … they won an award and, what’s more, a “substitute mother !” (If you want to know how that is possible, you will have to read the book: A Girl Named Disaster.) We don’t know who had more fun, the judges or the participants, but Daniel thanked us for a “wonderful party” as he left!

Spotlight on … HORIZONTE AZUL

Dalila Macuacua is a young woman who, since her early childhood, has been interested in human rights issues, especially those of girls and women. She is a woman who does not tolerate social injustice. Here are some excerpts from an interview with her: What is Horizonte Azul? “Horizonte Azul is a youth association founded in 2005. Horizonte fights for the protection and promotion of children’s rights. We work directly with girls by trying to integrate them into the society as effective and contributing members.” How is the partnership with the American School developing? “The partnership is developing well despite early difficulties, such as the language barrier. However we soon we found our common path and began to coordinate our work. It is admirable that the partnership is so balanced and that all activities are set up jointly. We hope to make this partnership even stronger and more meaningful for both sides next year.” Horizonte Azul is attending AISM’s Mayfair and will sell some of the crafts made jointly by their participants and our students.
