Over the year I have developed a strong interest in the area of retail design and wanted to use the YCN brief to explore this. The Ted Baker project really appealed to me as it would allow me to gain some experience in this area and hopefully showcase my talent.

Me and Alice chose to collaborate as we both shared these similar interests and wanted a brief that would create a portfolio piece for us in the right area of design. We think very similarly and have similar taste in styles as well as bringing a combination of skills, Alice in illustration and me in type and packaging.

We wanted this to be a fun, educational experience where we could learn from each other and use it as a step towards our design future.

Initially I did a lot of the brainstorming of ideas, themes, imagery and designs. I researched Ted Baker stores and this gave me a lot of ideas to work with. The concepts were based on ‘British’ and I tried to think of humerous concepts.

After coming up with the initial idea, I proposed this to Alice and she agreed it would be a fun, British idea to continue with. I then continued with the designs for the packaging as this is one of my interests within design.

I experimented with colour palettes, while alice was illustrating the visual elements for the design, although I can draw it is not one of my strengths, I really like Alice’s style and wanted her illustrations for this project.

I designed a newspaper to compliment the Fish n Chip theme, this would be then used for all the packaging and as a promtional hand out.

So I got on with the type element of the project as Alice did the illustrations. Keeping the imagery for the project fixed to the fish, newspaper and cloth design meant that the project had a strong continuous theme which we could then apply throughout the range.

Throughout the seperate parts of designing we oontinously shared our ideas and progress and helped each other to make design decitions. We both had something to work on throughout the project.

I continued with the packaging side of the project my designing the wrap and bag design using Alice’s imagery and my newspaper.

My earlier brainstorm of the Fish n Chip theme gave us ideas for the label, to use a fish and chip fork as part of the tag.

I mocked up the packaging for the digital side of printing while Alice took to the traditional printing methods to do the prints for the POS.

From the initial idea for the POS, I created a professional looking POS stand using the product photographs we had taken. Photoshop is not one of my strong points but working with Alice strengthened my skills and I was sble to produce mock ups for the project.

I touched on little elements such as the signs for the shop front and applied them to the window design, adding reflections and shadows to make the image appear more real.

Me and Alice both worked together on a lot of the final elements of this project as well as the final presentation boards which we submitted to YCN.
