contents Dear Friend,

18

Life is continual transition. Most of the changes are small, daily shifts toward a new reality. Others are major life-changing events.

Leap… And Let the Miracles Begin

We all experience these major and minor transitions which help us grow, experience and learn. These are opportunities to reinvent ourselves to our choosing. We can accept change as an opportunity for growth or we can resist and fight against nature, making life more difficult and less joyous. I’ve experienced many of the major life transitions: childbirth, death of a parent, divorce, family illness, changing careers, empty nest and more. Each is frightening, intense and sometimes painful. I usually scream and cry and feel the pain completely. Then I start to heal and find that each calamity presents the opportunity to reach inside myself and find new strength — and to recreate Who I Am. This beautiful issue of Evolving features articles on life’s transitions. In her column this month, Jude LaClaire offers insight into the spiral of life and how we can learn from transitions. Ashana, in her feature article, teaches us to take a leap and allow miracles in our lives. And, Sara Koron explores the yin and yang of nature and how it relates to mid-life changes. This is truly a glorious issue.

I encourage you to welcome change; to stop resisting the forces of nature and allow the waves of change to help create a new, stronger, more resilient and open to love—You!

ON THE COVER: Part of a series focused on mythology, Venus and the Three Graces depicts the birth of Venus rising from sea foam as a full personification of beauty and love. She is attended to by three Graces, or Charities, as they gift the goddess with joy, fertility and charm; then dress and prepare her for a journey to Olympus. The artwork was inspired by mythological and astrological study. In astrology, Venus rules Libra and Taurus. Placement of Venus in natal charts indicates how we give and take in relationships, where we express pleasure and leisure, and the degree to which we use money to gift to others. Deva Premal & Miten Strike New Chord with New Album, Password

October 21, 22, 23

Shamanic Pathways at White Deer Lodge Daniel Baxley THOTH Endorsed Teacher in The Pachakuti Mesa Tradition Offering: Shamanic Healing and Teachings, Spiritual Counseling, Sacred Stone Massage, Reiki, Craniosacral, Vision Quest, Sweat Lodge, and Workshops 816816-769769-7343 email: rainbowspiritstar@yahoo.com Website: www.shamanicpathways.net

The soulful blend of Deva Premal’s enchanting voice with Europe’s best jazz musicians results in a musical delight for body, mind and spirit Deva Premal & Miten, the world renowned singers of sacred, contemporary music, began their journey into love and music in 1990 when they met at an ashram in India. They have spent the last 21 years introducing millions of Westerners to the beauty and power of Sanskrit mantras. As Deva expresses it, "Mantras are passwords that transform the mundane into the sacred." Thus the artists have named their newest mantra album Password. These musicians will be performing in Kansas City at Unity Temple on the Plaza on September 28 as part of a 25-city U.S. tour in celebration of the new album. Deva and Miten created the mantra genre with the release of their album The Essence in 1998. Since then they have released ten albums, all of which topped New Age and Amazon.com charts worldwide. Password represents a shift in direction for the duo, with the introduction of Danish producer, RajRishi, who brought the cream of Copenhagen’s jazz players into the mix. The result is a substantial, musically refined album with sublime arrangements of ancient mantras, complimenting Deva's soulful vocals. The album also features Manose, the ever-present bansuri flute maestro from Nepal.

As with all their music, Deva and Miten's mission is the creation of the sacred; music born out of meditation with a deep longing to nourish and enhance the experience of the silent, peaceful, blissful space within us all. They look on their music as a spiritual practice; hence, the music transcends the concept of “entertainment”, inviting the listener into realms beyond the stress and concerns of daily life into a deep sense of inner peace. Password takes mantras beyond the ashrams of India and makes them accessible for anyone new to meditation or chanting, while offering a fresh sound for practiced individuals. Fulfilling a Dream of Helping Others Starts at Wellspring School of Allied Health walk into that classroom, I am just completely at peace with myself.”

Three local people with different backgrounds, stories, and interests all share one thing in common – they want to change the path their lives are on and follow pursuits that allow them to help others. Although studying for different careers, all have found their way to the WellSpring School of Allied Health, one of the area’s oldest and most respected career schools, renowned for its focus on wellness.

Enrique Orfin

BranDee Darnell Graceland University freshman BranDee Darnell was a pre-med student when a rare tumor forced her to leave college and her dreams behind. Once recovered, she became a retail manager where, for 12 years, long hours were the norm. At Christmas, she worked over 100 hours a week. Seeking normal hours, she took a desk job for the Department of Labor gathering information to determine unemployment rates. “I saw people around me getting ill from years of stress and I wanted a healthier career and lifestyle,” she says.

Enrique Orfin I do believe that my skill in massage therapy combined with my new skill set makes me a better Medical Assistant.” Darnell says this transition is about taking her interest in helping people to a new level. “All the knowledge that I’ve built up from having my tumor, to infertility, to adoption, to customer service, to massage plays a huge part in where my journey’s leading me. I’ve been through the hard times. I know how people feel. I came out of it stronger than ever.”

Like BranDee Darnell, Mexico City native Enrique Orfin attended college briefly. He left behind his dream of becoming a physical therapist so that he could work to help support his mother and younger sisters. Today, Orfin, 41, works full-time as an airline customer service representative and attends school at WellSpring. Orfin is studying massage therapy because he says there is a “lack of healing for the Hispanic community and I am trying to assist the community with its needs and help them live a better, healthier life.” Following graduation in October, Orfin plans to continue working full-time at the airline while realizing his dream by working part-time as a massage therapist. “The absence of medical access is greater in the

Heather Heckroot

BranDee Darnell With a goal of becoming a chiropractor, she decided to become a massage therapist to support herself while attending school. “Half way through WellSpring, I decided I wanted to be a massage therapist and teach others because I had found such healing in it,” Darnell says. “It is an alternative that heals me physically and spiritually -- the whole body, mind and spirit -- massage did that for me. I wanted to share that grace and passion with others.” While teaching massage therapy at WellSpring, Darnell began taking nursing prerequisite classes. “After going to school and teaching, I wanted to be a change agent and help others understand that there are alternatives to traditional medicine,” she says. “But the nurses I knew weren’t happy so I decided that wasn’t for me. I wanted another avenue to get into western medicine.” The answer came when WellSpring School of Allied Health added a Medical Assisting program. “I’m hoping, with my certification in pediatric massage, that I can do massage as well as be a Medical Assistant in a pediatrician’s office,” says Darnell, the mother of 18-month-old Ethan. “I still plan to teach massage therapy part time after I finish school. Her mother, who suffered from MS, had a stroke. The family was told to say their goodbyes. Baptists, who also studied Native American and New Age techniques, the family called upon their friends to practice their healing arts along with Western medicine. Heckroot’s mother improved. In fact, every time they were told she wouldn’t overcome an obstacle, they used healing arts, and her mother passed the milestone. Meanwhile, Heckroot was still attending Maple Woods, where she earned a 3.5 GPA but had begun to question why she was studying business. “I’m still doing my homework, going to classes, it’s something I’m good at it, but I don’t love it. I loved working on my mom. I loved being able to help her. And not just because she was my mom. It felt great being able to help someone.” “It came to me like a little light bulb going off in my head - you need to do massage therapy. I started researching schools and kept seeing the same things. Everything was very cookie cutter. They offered the bare minimum to get you licensed but they didn’t offer that foundation, support and strength you need. I came across the WellSpring web site and fell in love with their message and what they stood for. I toured the school with my husband and I just looked at him and I’m like, this is it, and he knew at that point that there was no going back. When I

All changes, even the most longed for, have their melancholy; for what we leave behind is part of ourselves; we must die to one life before we can enter into another! Gail Sheehy The spiral is a universal symbol. Angeles Arrien, in Signs of Life: The Five Universal Shapes and How to Use Them says, “The spiral symbolizes the process of growth and evolution. It is a process of coming to the same point again and again; but at a different level, so that everything is seen in a new light. The result is a new perspective on issues, people and places.” This is the spiral of life. Erik Erikson, in 1950, wrote the landmark Childhood and Society, describing cycles of development, including three adult stages. Gayle Sheehy wrote Passages, a best seller, in 1976. She wrote compellingly of adult development from ages 20-50. In 1996, she wrote New Passages: Your Life Across Time, expanding the cycles of development to continue through the 70’s and beyond. Let’s look at some of the things that are catalysts for people to begin the spiral of change at each stage of life, the symptoms one might be experiencing, the key tasks one is working on and the goals one hopes to accomplish. Early childhood development is progress driven by the innate programming in the human species. This is seen very clearly in the documentary, “Babies” which shows the development of four babies from birth through the first year of life. The four babies are from Mongolia, Namibia, San

one are the times when eating healthy meant “low-fat” or “fat-free.” That was throwing out the baby with the bath water. The right fats are essential for balanced hormones, stable mood and behavior, healthy skin and heart, keeping inflammation at bay and more. It’s a good idea to get your fats from whole food sources such as raw nuts and seeds, avocado, eggs, safer fish, grass fed poultry and meats. Yet, most of us still cook with oil. So what kind oil is best for cooking? Oil from naturally oily foods. They naturally leave an oily residue when your eat them. Does corn or edamame ever leave an oily residue in your mouth? Only if they are drenched in butter! I recommend coconut oil, grapeseed oil and ghee for sauteing and baking. Ghee is pure butter fat, made by boiling butter until the milk solids settle out. Avoid coconut and grapeseed oils that are heat or solvent extracted. The label should say extra virgin, or expeller-pressed. Coconut oil, grapeseed oil and ghee tolerate high heat without burning or becoming rancid, unlike other oils. Coconut oil is rich in anti-inflammatory fatty acids, but lends a sweet taste that may or may not be desirable. Grapeseed oil is rich in antioxidants and has a mild nutty flavor that you won’t taste in baked goods. Ghee is an excellent replacement for butter when sauteing. Baking recipes will need to be adjusted for it, however.

ing. We now know that extra virgin olive oil loses it nutritional value and becomes rancid when heated even slightly. So, use it straight out of the bottle in salad dressing, for dipping bread, and drizzled over foods for flavor. “Cold pressed, extra virgin” increases the likelihood that the oil is rich in antioxidants and that the fatty acids are not rancid. It should come in a dark bottle to prevent light from damaging it. A friend from France makes this simple, wonderful aioli. Some define aioli as a garlic mayonnaise, which doesn’t do it justice. Aioli has nothing to do with and is far more elegant than Hellmann’s or Miracle Whip. After chopping two heads of garlic and placing them in a mortar, he slowly added oil and salt as he ground the garlic with the pestle. We drizzled the emulsion over oven roasted fingerling potatoes sprinkled with cayenne pepper. Easy and so delicious!

So what about olive oil? All my 1980’s cookbooks use extra virgin olive oil for saute-

2011: Attitude for Beauty

The Mysteries of the Universe

Suzette Scholtes

Nancy Russell, M.D.

B

eauty begins with attitude. It's not the cynical kind of attitude; but one that fosters caring, loving, optimism, peace, and calm. The highest beauty is feeling joy and peace at the same moment. It’s feeling alive and serene at the same moment at the awe and wonder of living life. Beauty inspires others with grace by loving deep and wide and full. There also is a sense of dignity: to value and appreciate oneself and to live with confidence, not arrogance. Despite the pressure from Hollywood, it’s never about the outside--but, is all about the radiance on the inside. Many of us look and feel younger than our biological age. What’s your routine? Each day, I “move the blood” with yoga; even if only a few handstands or downward facing dogs or a long practice. I walk and enjoy fresh air and nature almost daily, even in winter. On the spiritual side, meditation is a great love; so that’s easy. When time allows, I sit for 45 minutes. On busy days, I sit in silence just long enough to set a clear intent for the day for success and optimism. I ask the universe to guide me and help manifest the best possible outcome with no harm. My diet is fresh or organic as much as possible. It took a while to avoid sugar and processed foods. As I visit with others about this, we find it becomes second nature and no hardship at all. I avoid going into “martyr” over food. When someone presents me a beautiful slice of cake, I take a few bites, rave over it, and leave most on my plate. I do not punish others with my diet choices or hold myself as better

than they for eating and loving their cake or their BBQ. Arrogance that one’s food choices are better than another’s is very toxic. It is harmful to feel superior to others for our chosen life style. That in itself is aging…to feel better than any other for any reason siphons away energy. It’s all ego stuff. I hydrate constantly using waters and lots of teas, full of herbs and nutrition. A great facialist applied her crèmes not too long ago. She complimented my skin. “I never thought of myself as having great skin," I said. “Well, it’s time you do," she replied. I drove home thinking of all those years I wasted being hard on myself for imperfections. How awesome to shift my image, yet again! Try the three commitments (fresh food, exercise, and silence) to see if it helps you feel healthier, more alive and able to bring forth beauty from the inside. It builds strong self-esteem, self-acceptance, self-value and gratitude. My students ask what else I practice: Infinite patience. I listen for the music in nature. I love laughter. I look for courage to build within me. I feel my feelings and think my thoughts to remain responsible for them. My “best” friends are invaluable players in my life. Never a week goes by without their love and support. Regardless of age, women and men of true beauty radiate a confidence and a glow that comes from the inside.

Suzette Scholtes has trained 100s of yoga teachers and reached 1000s of yoga students since 1984. The school is approved by the Kansas Board of Education, providing solid credentials and depth of yoga. www.theyogastudio.com or news@theyogastudio.com or 913-492-9594.

T

he book I am reading, The Universe is Calling, Opening to the Divine Through Prayer by Eric Butterworth, has made me think about some intriguing questions. What do you mean by prayer? How should we pray? Is prayer simply a verbal formula or bargaining chip with God? Since childhood, I have had a desire to understand the mysteries of God. Prayer is a natural function of life for most peoples and I believe the tendency toward prayer is indigenous to every person. Some form of prayer comes natural to all, whether you call it prayer or meditation or a connection with nature or the divine. Prayer and meditation can bring a new level of consciousness and awareness. The bright side of this is that you can be healed, you can be successful, and you can overcome problems by changing your consciousness through prayer. Another way to think of this is the power of positive thinking. A study done at the University of Chicago studied 200 executives at a telephone company subjected to enormous job stress over an extended period of time. Half of the executives reported numerous symptoms and health problems, and half did not. What made the difference? Those who stayed healthy judged their stressors differently; they did not regard them as the end of the world, but as a natural and inevitable part of their lives. They interpreted the stress by regarding it as a challenge, an opportunity to learn, grow, and become a better, wiser manager. The healthy group also had a strong commitment to their families and to life in general off the job. The authors of the study identified control, challenge, and commitment as the key factors behind the hardy personality that remains healthy under stress. I would also speculate that these managers were more likely to meditate or pray in their down time. Larry Dossey, M.D., a fellow colleague and holistic physician, has written many articles and books about the power of prayer. One major study that was done a decade or more ago was remarkable. Silent prayer partners prayed for one half of the patients on a heart unit in a major hospital for people they didn’t know. In this well done study, the group of people that were prayed for had fewer heart rhythm problems and went home for the hospital sooner than the control group. The power of prayer is amazing, even when the people praying do not know the other person. Yes, we are all interconnected at an energetic level. Another look at prayer was reported to me by one of my patients who is a strong Christian person and I very much admire her thoughts on prayer. She states, “At a young age, I became aware that the amazing order, design, beauty, and complexity of the

universe are evidences of an intelligence far superior to that of the highest human intellect or creativity. I began to be drawn to the ancient writings of the Hebrews and Greeks – what is referred to as the Holy Bible. This book is a compilation of 66 books written over a time span of more than 1500 years by 40 vastly different writers, with various occupations and writing styles; yet every book contained within the Bible is consistent with its message, and offers insight and guidance through our journey on earth and into eternity. It is an ancient book backed by compelling archeological evidence and fulfilled prophecy. The entirety of the Bible itself claims to be “God breathed.” As I opened the books, I read Jeremiah 33:2 -3: “Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.” It was then that the mysteries of the nature and purposes of God began to be revealed to me, and my life became filled with incredible peace and purpose.” As a holistic physician, I enjoy discussing with my patients what religion and spirituality brings to their lives and how it pertains to their health and well being. I can understand a person better when I know their spiritual path, whether it be Christian, Jewish, Hindu, Wicca, Buddhist, Agnostic or simply a connection to nature or to simply, “follow the golden rule.” I accept all beliefs and thoughts and honor each person’s beliefs and choices about their health care. May we journey together on your path to optimal wellness; mind, body, and spirit.

Circle Back to Your Dreams “It’s been said many times: Baby Boomers are unique. Those born from 1946 to 1964 were not only larger than any previous age cohort, but almost from birth they have acted differently and in many ways re-defined every life stage they have passed through. …. During the next decade they will not just become the age cohort 65 to 74 years old, they will transform it.” So begins the Met Life Report on Early Boomers. This is but one of many reports, articles and essays about how Baby Boomers will change the look and feel of retirement. Retirement is a life transition in the same way as getting a driver’s license, graduation, marriage, birth and birthday, receiving a promotion, buying a house, divorce, death of parents and other monumental occasions. It is a transition that can be gratifying and smooth or it can be filled with anxiety and depression; and sometimes, both. For some, it is a signal their life is coming to an end. George Eastman, founder of Eastman/Kodak, retired and within a couple of months shot himself because, as he wrote in his suicide note, “My work is done. Why wait?” He saw or had no other reason to live. In a less tragic vein, what many suffer is an identity crisis. For many years/decades the vocabulary of a person’s life is their work. We see and relate to the world through the lens of our profession. When it no longer is our daily mantra there is, people report, an empty feeling or a kind of confusion or loss that can lead to depression. Our work supplies us with much more than a salary. A person’s work provides a structure for daily living, opportunities for achievement, social relationships, and leadership-decision making. On a more basic level, work dictates when a person gets up in the morning and what clothes they wear. On a higher level, work provides status and/or power. You don’t need to be an executive VP overseeing thousands of people and millions of dollars to know this. People in pivotal positions within an organization who understands their contribution to the big picture, also, understand their level of status and what it provides. Over time, these factors become the foundation for the structure of our lives. When these factors are removed because of retirement — our house is in danger of crumbling. Closely related to the issue of identity is how self-directed a person is. The more highly self-directed, the better able a person is to replace those lost functions with other, self-chosen ones. However, a danger for someone so highly directed is the possibility that it narrows their vision and retirement options are missed. Self-directedness needs to be balanced with adaptability. Again in our Circle Back to your Dreams workshop and coaching both these factors are addressed. Each of us moves through transitions or change points in our lives in different ways. The level of adaptability demonstrated by a person in the past will be a good indicator of how adaptable they will be when moving through the transition of retirement. One exercise BOOMERangs uses in Circle Back to your Dreams is called Personal Points of Transition. In it, participants are asked to identify other change points in their lives and then asked questions about these. For instance, was a conscious decision made to change or was this an event over which you had no control? Participants are then asked to interview and be interviewed about their transitions. The questions include:

What were your thoughts and feelings about the change prior to making it?

Through Medical Intuition and Nervous System Energy Work, Experience a Transformational and Integrated Approach to Physical, Mental, Emotional and Spiritual Well-Being. *************

• Eight years study with Rev. Rosalyn L.

How did you treat yourself and those nearest and dearest to you as the transition time came on?

During the transition itself were you enjoying and directing it, struggling but coping, feeling as if all was a blur or happening in slow motion, or lost and not knowing what to do next?

• When the transition was complete, if you felt good about it, what did you do that made it so? If you didn’t feel good about the transition when it was done, what do you regret?

(913) 685-9939 Kim@kchealer.com

With answers to these questions, participants can now take a look forward into their retirement and identify where they may be strong and where they may stumble in order to prepare accordingly. Identity, Directedness, and Adaptability are 3 Retirement Success Factors that are assessed and worked on during Circle Back to your Dreams. There are 15 others. One of those has to due with Spirituality and how 3 basic spiritual principles can aid in successful retirement. They are:

For each there are exercises that work to put and keep a person “in the moment,” become highly aware of their environment (both real and ethereal), and continue to experience a passion for living. In this last, the exercise is a rewriting of the great song in Fiddler on the Roof …To Life! Great consideration and planning is given to the financial transition of retirement, but not these more intangible factors. When it comes time to structure one's self, people find those muscles have atrophied. BOOMERangs workshop and individual coaching, called Circle Back to your Dreams, prepares pre -retirees for this transition. “It is never too late to be what you might have been!” T.S. Eliot

A Day of No Regrets

Living a Juicy Life — Part I

recently attended the IDEA Fitness Conference in Los Angeles, a conference for fitness instructors and personal trainers. IDEA’s mission is to inspire the world to fitness and I definitely left the conference with a renewed sense of inspiration. Aside from many fitness and nutrition classes, lectures and workshops, there were two keynote speakers, Apolo Ohno and Dr. Daniel Amen. If you are not familiar with Apolo, he is an Olympic Gold Medalist in speed skating and his story of becoming a speed skater is worth exploring. Many things inspired me about Apolo’s talk, but my main takeaway is to live each day with no regrets. He trained every day for the Olympics with the thought that he only has today so he better make the most of it. By training this way, he had no regrets or doubts when he reached the Olympics. Even though he wanted to win a medal, in his mind and his heart, he was proud of his Olympic journey. Since his talk, I have been asking myself the following questions: • What would a day of no regrets look like for me? • If I am not here tomorrow, what legacy do I want to leave? • What is my mission in life and what are my life goals? • Am I living in a way that supports my legacy, mission and goals? • Would I have any regrets if I was not here tomorrow? I encourage you to ask yourself what a day of NO REGRETS is for you and see what shows up. After Apolo, Dr. Amen graced the stage. He has been on PBS numerous times, written many books and is a psychiatrist who studies brain health. In most situations, he believes in treating disease through lifestyle over medication. Dr. Amen showed before and after brain scans of his patients. They were impressive! Dr. Amen had many key points with most having to do with nutrition. His advice is based on his work with his patients and research.

If you plan on living to 85, according to Dr. Amen, there is a 50 percent chance you will get Alzheimer’s. Deterioration can start 20-30 years before an actual disease appears. This includes Alzheimer’s. So what you do now can affect your future self in a big way.

Supplement with fish oil to have proper levels of omega 3. Know your Vitamin D levels. If Vitamin D and omega 3 levels are not optimum, it can be very difficult to lose weight. Avoid the white stuff: cocaine (duh!), sugar, salt, white flour, white potatoes and artificial sweeteners. Do not drink alcohol. No amount of alcohol is good for you, not even wine. Get plenty of sleep. Exercise regularly. Keep your mind active by learning something new regularly. End emotional overeating through meditation. Influence others to be healthier and surround yourself with people who will influence you to be healthier. Journaling food intake daily will avoid food amnesia and has improved people’s results in weight loss dramatically.

ver the past year we have dis-

cussed many topics regarding Live and Whole Food Nutrition or a Raw Vegan Lifestyle. We have discussed the definition of Raw Vegan, meaning that no meat, dairy, eggs, or fish are consumed and that nothing is heated over 118 degrees. We have discussed that enzymes are needed for every function in the body at a cellular level and that eating a Live and Whole Food diet supports healthy enzyme activity in the body. We have discussed recipes from entrees to cocktails to Summer drinks. In these next two articles I am going to introduce you to a deeper level of Live and Whole Food Living. I am going to be discussing Juice -Fasting. Stop! Come Back! You’ve stayed with me this long, hear me out once again. Please… Fasting is nothing new. People have been doing this since we have been on Earth. Sometimes the reasons had to do with lack of available food, sometimes for spiritual or religious reasons, and sometimes for nutritional and health reasons. There is a growing understanding that many foods that we eat in the Standard American Diet (S.A.D.) are associated with detrimental health effects. Diabetes, heart disease, cancer, hypertension and many other dis-eases are rampant in our society. The body already has everything it needs to repair, clear out, re-build, and maintain itself, IF we will step out of its way and stop piling toxins into it while it is trying to do its job. Currently, there seems to be an increased interest in detoxing. Juice- Fasting is a great and SAFE way of detoxing. Imagine deciding to deep clean your house while a garbage truck is backing up to your front door and unloading more garbage. It’s the same thing in our bodies. There are many reports of people healing their bodies through choosing a Raw Vegan Lifestyle and/or in Juice-Fasting. I have personally known people who have healed themselves from cervical cancer, hypertension, diabetes, depression, and anxiety through Juice-Fasting. I am one of those people. It has been said that for every day on a Juice—Fast, the body heals itself three months back in time. Some people routinely fast, taking a break from food from one day to one week at a time to give the body rest while it repairs itself. Fasting is NOT Starving! During Juice-Fasting the body gets a huge

amount of nourishment and support without the work of having to digest. The cells can literally clear away old debris so that it can repair and rebuild the cellular structures without the concerns of having to stop what they are doing and divert their energy into processing even more food. But won’t I be hungry? No. Again, Fasting is NOT starving. In a typical day a person will be drinking 3-4 quarts of freshly made juice. Won’t I get bored? Why would you? You can juice almost all fruits and vegetables with an infinite variety of flavor combinations. Isn’t it costly? It doesn’t have to be. Look at the monetary cost of juicing compared to the monetary, emotional and physical costs of having a chronic dis-ease such as cancer, hypertension, diabetes and heart disease. Won’t I miss solid food? In all honesty it really is a very individual thing. Most people feel full, nourished and happy--with no craving or desire for food. Personally, it took me about six years before I would actually entertain the idea of fasting. I was afraid my blood sugar would drop, I would be too hungry, I would feel weak, I would feel bad, etc. These were my fears which had kept me addicted to food/eating most of my life. I have fasted for anywhere from 1 day to over 3 months many times over the past few years. Each time has been deeply healing on so many levels and has filled me with energy, peace, health, and happiness. Part 2, next month, will go into more details about Juice-Fasting and how to find out more about it. Eating Well in Kansas City Healing Foods—by Jane Van Benthusen A Healing Diet

I

want to share what I consider to be a healing diet. It is my belief, and the belief of many others, that you can heal your body and mind by changing what you eat. I was able to heal my obesity, cancer, depression and hormonal imbalances — all through my diet. Others have triumphed over diseases like diabetes, heart disease, autism, digestive disorders and chronic fatigue. A healing diet targets FIVE ASPECTS of your health to help you gain victory over illness: 1. Decreases inflammation — Inflammation damages cells and arterial walls and causes many diseases. By reducing inflammation, your body is better able to heal. Inflammation also causes pain! 2. Alkalizes your body — All diseases including infections, osteoporosis and cancer thrive in an acidic environment. By alkalizing your body, your cells can heal and regenerate. 3. Lowers blood glucose – One of the primary causes of diabetes and weight gain are burned out insulin receptors. By lowering blood glucose levels, insulin receptors can heal and the body can begin to produce normal amounts of insulin to heal diabetes. 4. Eliminates toxins – Toxicity has become epidemic in our society today and is a major cause of the increase in hormonal imbalance and autoimmune diseases. The diet can help problems like female disorders, infertility, hypothyroidism and headaches by balancing hormones and also help in reversal of autoimmune diseases like fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, Alzheimer's and autism. 5.Provides all of your nutrients – Many of today’s illnesses are due to nutritional deficiencies including a lack of prebiotics and probiotics. Most of the foods we eat today are processed and stripped of all vitamins, minerals, anti-oxidants and enzymes. 6. BONUS: This type of diet is also healing for our planet! On a healing diet, one needs to remove all processed foods, chemicals and preservatives, the bad fats and the bad animal products-also remove all refined sugars and all grains. 1. Remove the BAD FATS – Replace them with GOOD FATS. In my opinion, bad fats such as hydrogenated and partially hydrogenated oils, trans fats, soybean oil, canola oil and vegetable oils cause heart disease, stroke, diabetes, cancer, chronic fatigue, and neurotoxic syndrome as well as inflammation. I'll go further and say that good fats are essential to hormone production, cancer prevention, brain development, weight loss, cellular healing, and anti-inflammation. 2. Either remove all meats or change the meats that you eat. (I personally would rather see someone eat a small amount of well-raised meat than any dairy) There are hundreds of studies that link commercial meats with cancer and heart disease. The grain that is fed to animals — that were created to eat grass — changes fatty acid ratios (too

much omega-6, not enough omega-3) and denatures good fats, contributing to many diseases. 3. Remove all refined sugars, refined salt and grains. Low glycemic carbohydrates in the forms of fruits and vegetables have high amounts of fiber, enzymes, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants that help slow aging, improve energy levels, encourage weight loss and naturally detoxify our cells. All grains can feed the sugars in your body and can add to issues with yeast overgrowth and to intestinal problems. You may decide to add some back into your diet later; but for now, remove them all — even the whole grains. 4. Remove or limit caffeine and alcohol. Alcohol turns to sugar and bad fat and it also disrupts hormones and mood receptors. Caffeine falsely stimulates all glands and organs and, it causes acidity. Foods on the Healing Foods Diet 1. Nuts and Seeds (raw is best) a variety 2. Fruits (raw is best) a variety 3. Fats and Oils (raw is best) like coconut, flax, hemp, olive, grape seed, sesame, pumpkin seed in oil form and in the whole form (see nut and seed list) are all good fats. Also avocados. 4. Vegetables with a great emphasis on the green leafy ones. Include a wide variety of all kinds of veggies. Eat the rainbow! I'm not talking Skittles here. 5. Cultured and Fermented Foods and Drinks like sauerkraut, Kim Chi, kombucha, and others. Good bacteria are your friends and your body will thank you. 6. Condiments and Sweeteners that I recommend are good whole sea salt (grey celtic or pink himalayan), herbs and spices, apple cider vinegar, balsamic vinegar, coconut aminos, tamari (wheat free soy sauce), raw honey (in moderation), stevia and fruit. 7. Drink plenty of good clean water (preferably not out of a plastic bottle), herbal teas and raw vegetable juices. I hope you will consider trying on a healing diet and that this information will help empower you to add more raw, whole, unprocessed foods into your diet. Your body and the environment will thank you! Jane Van Benthusen is an alternative cancer thriver. Leap … And Let the Miracles Begin

Transitions are the soul’s way of inviting us to step into our own magnificent and delicious radiant Self. Sometimes they command your attention with neon lights. Sometimes they are quiet and gentle. Either way, if you listen, they will lead you Home to the fullness of All You Truly Are.

By Ashana

T

here are defining moments in life when all you can do is leap. You can’t worry about the net appearing. You might have an idea, or a hope; but really, you’re sailing straight into the unknown. You don’t know where you’re going or what’s going to happen. You try talking about it; but, it does not make logical sense to anyone--let alone to you. It might feel exhilarating. It might also feel terrifying. The bottom line is this: Life as you know it is over; because, your soul is demanding change. I was 48 years old when I sold my business. I had a dream that I had been carrying inside my heart for 25 years. I’d been waiting, listening and waiting, until the timing felt right. I was ready. I would sell my business and use the money to record a CD of my music. Music I hadn’t even written yet. Music that had yet to reveal itself to me. To say that I was afraid is an understatement--I was terrified. I was relatively successful and well respected in the community. I liked what I was doing. But the thought of continuing to live the status quo felt oppressive to me. My spirit was contracting and every day I grew smaller and smaller. There was nothing left to do except leap. Take the risk. Let go of life as I knew it and surrender to the relentlessly compelling voice of my soul. I sold the business to the only person who showed up to buy it. And the very same day that I closed on the sale, through amazing and fortuitous synchronicity, I met my producer, Thomas Barquee. My life changed forever. Six years and four CDs later, I tour worldwide and have become renowned as a crystal bowl master and singer of sacred healing music. I love what I do. I am insanely and wonderfully passionate about it. Every part of

me has undergone a deep transformation. I am happier than I have ever been. I recently married the love of my life, whom I met while on tour. Every day feels like a blessing, although some days are easier than others, of course. I am 54 years old and I feel as if my life has just begun. Letting go of what is safe and comfortable to follow the stirrings of your heart is not easy. It is a process. It will take you into the dark places within, and raise you up to magnificent heights that defy imagination. It has brought me to my knees and expanded my heart beyond anything I could have dreamed possible. Letting go of what is safe and comfortable to follow the call of your soul is a powerful teacher. It taught me about trust. How to trust my intuition. How to trust others. How to trust what is true and right for me. This led to Self-confidence, authenticity, strength, courage, cooperation, kindness, compassion and humility. The list is endless. My own journey took me from student to secretary, secretary to music teacher, music teacher to recording artist, performer and sound healer. As I look back, each step built upon the next, opening doors to prepare me for the fulfillment of my dreams in ways I never imagined. H.H. Sai Maa Lakshmi Devi once said that if you were to spend 21 days saying “yes” to everything, your life would be forever changed. There are days when I observe the many ways I withdraw into a cocoon of “no,” contracting and limiting myself with thought forms born of fear. Fear of the unknown. Fear of success. Fear of expansion. Fear of change. Fear of receiving love. And then there are those exquisite times when I say “yes.” Yes to the joy. Yes to the love. Yes to

the flow and the magic and the promptings of my heart. And it is glorious and fun and miraculous. Transitions are the soul’s way of inviting us to step into our own magnificent and delicious radiant Self. Sometimes they command your attention with neon lights. Sometimes they are quiet and gentle. Either way, if you listen, they will lead you Home to the fullness of All You Truly Are. I invite you to say YES. Say YES to the calling of your heart and YES to the passion of your soul’s voice. Say YES to your life. Sing your song. Whatever it is. Fall down. Get up. Take a risk. Leap. And let the miracles begin. Ashana is a singer, sound healing practitioner and renowned master crystal singing bowl artist. Her CD recordings, “All Is Forgiven,” “Jewels of Silence,” “Beloved,” and the newly released “The Infinite Heart,” produced by Thomas Barquee (Snatam Kaur, Seal), have received international acclaim and have revolutionized the New Age Healing Music genre with their unique sound. Ashana returns to Kansas City for two nights on September 9 and 10 for a weekend of events, including a concert at Unity Temple on the Plaza and a Crystalline Activation Ceremony for Profound Manifestation and Healing at Learning 2Fly Geodesic Dome in Mission, KS. Return Inward with the Breath of Nature By Sara Koron

W

hy do my feet hurt? How can I be so tired? Where did this hair come from and/or go to? These are common things people may ask when approaching midlife. All of these complaints cause our attention to turn to our health. Physical decline is a huge concern for people contemplating the passing of time. Sure, there are other societal worries that take their toll on us as we grow older; but, I won’t be addressing those in this article. Neither will I be trying to solve all your ailments at this time. What I will discuss is the breath of nature as expressed through yin and yang. As above, so below. There, I said it, the end. No, really, just as all animals must follow the laws of nature, we as humans are a microcosm of the macrocosm, including the environment in which we live. As the wheel turns, we too continue to grow and evolve; so why does aging happen? Take a look at the taiji, better known as the yin-yang symbol. This is a picture of yin and yang in balance. This is not a static image, as the states of yin and yang are constantly moving through different energetic stages--specifically the five elemental phases. First, let’s examine the nature of yin and yang. You can see from the image, the left half is yang; it is represented by the white color, as it is light, or brightness. Yang energy is expansive, and its natural movement is rising. The right half of the symbol is yin, represented by the black color, or darkness. Yin is material, contracting, and its tendency is to descend. But, this is not just black and white. The dot of contrasting color in each half shows the interactive nature of yin and yang.

These two parts are constantly communicating, balancing each other, and ultimately transmuting into one another. The integration of yin and yang are integral to all life; in fact, their separation only occurs at death. Now, there is a simple way of observing yin and yang in the cycle of nature. Go back to the image of the taiji, then rotate it clockwise a quarter of a turn. Drawing a line through the center, you have the horizon. Above, the sun rises, reaches its peak at midday, and sets. Below is the moon, the quiet time of night when all is still. Not sure yet? You can see the image on a larger temporal scale as the seasons of the year. This time the horizontal line represents the equinoxes, when yin and yang are at equilibrium. The vertical axis would then be the solstice time; summer when yang activity is at its peak, and winter when there is stillness and the nights are long. The yin and yang relationship can be compared to yet a larger period of time, that of the individual lifespan. The best way to examine these phases is through the hexagrams of the yijing, or “The Book of Changes.” The yijing is a complex, ancient book and divination tool, requiring much contemplation to understand fully. A crude simplification, for the sake of this article, is that the total of 64 hexagrams demonstrate all possible combinations of yin and yang. Here, the taiji is divided into twelve periods, like a clock. This waxing and waning of yin and yang is defined by the twelve tidal hexagrams. These important hexagrams represent the linear growth of yin and yang, respectively. This cycle, beginning with the return of the yang, describes the important life stages

of growing, maturing, and aging. To bring this information back to the topic of mid-life, we shall consider the periods at the top of the clock. This is where yang is changing into yin. Many people have trouble during this time of transition, which is often related to different types of resistance in the natural cycle. Just think of those violent storms we get here in the Midwest during the spring and fall; this is the type of energy required for transformation. If all goes well in our growth and development, we have a time of increased activity leading to accomplishment of goals we have set for ourselves. Optimally, we reach our peak of progress and advancement of these goals around middle age; we’ve discovered our path (Hexagram 43 “Resolution”), followed our dream (Hexagram 1 “Initiating”) and made “Contact” (Hexagram 44) with our mission. This accomplishment feels great when it is recognized, though in our busy lives it is hard to know when that time has come, and to give one’s self a pat on the back. At this point, the preferable action is to then “Retreat” (Hexagram 33), to take our rest and present an offering of thanks for the abundance we’ve received. In summary, the process of aging and that important phase of the mid-life transition are all processes of yin and yang. We all have a path, which is our destiny. We try to follow the way, using determination and will to succeed. This means there is no time for looking back, or regret, because this cycle doesn’t pause or rewind. When we reach that transition, acceptance is key to the cycle of returning inward. Once we are “over the hill,” we embark on the downhill journey. We be-

come less active in the outside world, so that the light can now grow in our hearts. In this way we are nourished and truly able to develop deep wisdom, that which we pass on to our children. We learn to value our health, taking effort to protect ourselves from dis-ease. The sun sets, just as the leaves fall in autumn, and at dusk we put our harvest into storage to enjoy the stillness and beauty of winter, with the breath of nature.

Scorpio (Oct. 23 – Nov. 21) You might be starting a relationship, or healing a current one. Trust that this new (or renewed) connection can be really good! Don’t be cynical! You’ll also have breakthroughs with finances, even if the situation has seemed dire. You could get a new job, or be powerfully recognized for things you’ve been doing for awhile. Meditate to open your heart. In general, don’t give up hoping and believing in the good of humanity! Sagittarius (Nov. 22 – Dec. 21) Like your Scorpio pals, you can have many job and financial breakthroughs. It’s important to have a good budget in place, so you’ll have a plan in place to pay off old bills, and still have plenty of money for fun! You might also get interested in new health methods. This could be a different way of eating, or practicing yoga or Tai chi. Variety inspires you, so change things up and keep your mind fresh and excited. Capricorn (Dec. 22 – Jan. 19) Powerful Pluto is progressing through your sign, giving you lots of self-esteem and personal magnetism. However, Pluto can also kick up some “psychic dust” from your subconscious. Meditate on releasing any past experiences that have caused low self-worth or a pervading sense of guilt or self-doubt. Letting go of negativity helps you receive all the good stuff Pluto has to offer! Relationships will be very improved, and you’ll feel comfortable getting close and having a deeper intimacy. Aquarius (Jan. 20 – Feb. 18) You’ll really feel self-love this month. Many planets are moving to heal deep psychological patterns that make you pick on yourself. You’ll be able to view yourself as others see you, which is as a caring, charismatic and fun person! You might even be starting a new relationship, or your current one will get more sizzle-y and sexy. Your dream and meditation life will be especially rich, so look for messages and guidance.

September 2011

Pisces (Feb. 19 – March 20) You’ll have a breakthrough in negative thinking patterns or old issues you’ve been dealing with. You’ll suddenly feel that it’s easier to think positively and be more hopeful. You might even feel you’ve completely conquered a troubling pattern. Congratulations! You’ve moved into a brand new consciousness (karmic state of mind)! This shift will bring physical and emotional empowerment. You could even get a new job or have a sudden source of money! Aries (March 21 – April 19) You’ve got some big career changes coming! You’ll feel powerful and confident at work. You could get a promotion, or be noticed by higherups. In general, your finances will improve, along with self-esteem. You might even start a new relationship. If single, focus on having fun and doing playful stuff you like to do. Your joy will attract someone great if you stay open! Taurus (April 20 – May 20) This is a great month to just celebrate and feel happy! Jupiter is working with you, helping smooth out relationship issues and improve your self-esteem. It’s also a good time to make changes in your home, so you feel light and airy when you’re there, rather than bogged down with clutter. If you’ve fallen off the meditation wagon, start up again. Make a beautiful area in your home for your quiet time so you’ll be more consistent. Gemini (May 21 – June 20) If you’ve been feeling irritated or frustrated, make of list of people and circumstances (or personal qualities!) that are causing you grief. Meditate or sit quietly and go over each item on your list, and try to forgive the person or situation. You’ll start to feel a sense of relief and even a bit of euphoria as the karma is lifted off of you. You’ll have a closer connection with your intuition and feel guided and comforted. Relationships will improve because you’ll be more able to trust. You could even have an improvement in finances, especially if you owe money. As you forgive karmic debts, maybe someone will forgive your financial debt! Cancer (June 21 – July 22) As Pluto moves direct, you’ll find a big improvement in your relationships. You’ll feel empowered, and anything that’s been in the way of trust and intimacy will be cleared out. Forgive the past and enjoy the present! If single, you could meet a new person who is dedicated to their spiritual growth. You can also meet new friends, or make time to do fun things with current pals. Mars will help you money, and you could make some good financial decisions that had been weighing on your mind. Leo (July 23 – Aug. 22) Mars is in your sign, helping you feel strong, sexy and confident! You can start new projects or new relationships. You’ll have an all around good self-image. It’s also a great time to start a new health program. You could begin eating better, or practicing yoga or Tai chi. Meditate on being in touch with signals from your body. You can also have major positive changes at work! Enjoy everything and express gratitude for your good karma!
