Dear Friend,

Contents

I’ve received calls throughout the month of April inquiring whether the magazine would be printed and distributed. We chose not to print the April magazine as we all were sheltering in place. Instead, we amped up the online presence for the magazine and offered it in both a digital version that lays out like the print edition, as well as hosting all of the articles and advertisers on the website.

Overcoming Hopelessness 10

For May, and possibly going forward, we’ll continue as a digital publication. It further gives the earth a chance to breathe as we all step back for a bit and rest. From all of us at Evolving Magazine, we wish you health, we wish you security, we wish you love. Until we can see you again in person, enjoy this edition with articles on ways to implement self care, and how to deal with isolation, stress eating, and distress during this time.

Regular moisturizers, creams and serums only treat the symptoms of dry skin, they don’t go deeper and stimulate your skin cells to heal your dryness from the inside out. Patent-pending FACTORFIVE skincare is revolutionary because it uses the body’s own building blocks to restore skin on the cellular level and reduce signs of aging. When the World is Mud-luscious BY JUDE LACLAIRE, PH.D.

E

.E. Cummings in his poem, in Just, calls the spring world “mud-luscious” and “puddle wonderful.” Little children are playing marbles, dancing, playing hop-scotch, and jumping rope. But there is the “little lame balloonman” who is also old and perhaps poor. Today, my world seems a lot like that. There is the beautiful world of spring flowers, children’s sidewalk drawings, and many people walking with children and dogs. I am also reminded daily of those who are less fortunate. They may be sick, hungry, without jobs, financial security, or feeling the pain of mental illness. In this new reality, it is important for us to be aware of the beauty, the love, and the other wonderful things, while also acknowledging the pain, the suffering, and the needs of others. We are called to contribute to the greater good. When difficult things happen, it seems that many people show their best qualities, while others appear to descend into their darkest selves. Sometimes, we vacillate between those parts of ourselves. As I listen to news, I hear both the facts and the fictions. I see and hear of brave and amazing deeds, along with acts of selfishness, rudeness, and greed. I choose to focus on the positive, while acknowledging the negative. The many brave and tired health care workers are on the forefront, helping people who are sick, suffering, or dying. There are so many stories of these thousands of people. One local story is of two young nurse practitioners, both moms, who are going to New York, volunteering to work where they are desperately needed. Others are

There are those who are feeding the homeless, preparing lunches for school children, delivering meals to the elderly , and working in grocery stores. Jennifer Garner and Reese Witherspoon started an initiative called Save with Stories. They are raising money to help children affected by coronavirus school closures by live-streaming readings of popular children’s books. We know that stories, art, music, and other creative activities help people of all ages in challenging situations. Other celebrities are creating special musical programs to encourage and entertain. We can be grateful for those making and distributing masks, or those who are making protective equipment with creative approaches, such as 3-D printers.

Others are working tirelessly in animal shelters because they recognize that our furry friends still need us to protect them. There are many generous, creative, and thoughtful things being done by many selfless, caring, and creative people. Look for those opportunities, and do what you can. Sadly, there are those who recklessly endanger others and take advantage in greedy, selfish ways. Be aware and be safe. We can protect ourselves and others by being proactive, but not living in fear. A message from White Eagle, a Hopi indigenous voice, tells us, “This moment humanity is going through can be seen as a portal and as a hole. The decision to fall into the hole or go through the portal is up to you.” He reminds us that if we are consumed with

pessimism, we will fall into the hole. If we take the opportunity to look at ourselves, rethinking life and death and taking care of ourselves and others, we will go through the portal. Indeed, this is a time to dig deep, find our better selves, challenge our growth and determination, and see this as an opportunity for greater good. Use the tools you have. Acquire more tools as you need them. When we face our fears, our difficulties, we get a new vision of the world. White Eagles says, “What world do you want to build for yourself? For now, this is what you can do: serenity in the storm…and sing, dance, resist through art, joy, faith, and love.” I encourage you all to do this each day. Encourage one another. Work together. We will all be better for it.

Self-Care Strategies To Support Mental Health And Minimize Depression During Isolation BY NANCY RUSSELL, M.D. AND EMILY DAY

A

s I write this article, we are steeped in prudent, but challenging social distancing rules in an effort to minimize the spread of the Coronavirus. As we adapt the best that we can, I want to highlight the many strategies we can use to support our mental health and minimize signs and symptoms of depression. Neurotransmitters are chemicals that affect our mood and behavior, and they include serotonin, epinephrine (a.k.a. adrenaline), and others. We make neurotransmitters through two main pathways: via the nutrients we consume through food as well as via the microbiome in our gastrointestinal tract. In fact, up to 70-90% of our neurotransmitters are synthesized by the bacteria within our gut! As such, it’s important that we support these two main production pathways of our mood -lifting neurotransmitters. First, make sure you’re getting adequate protein each day because the amino acids (the building blocks of protein) are in turn the building blocks for our neurotransmitters. For example, Tryptophan, present in most protein-based foods, is a precursor to the neurotransmitter serotonin, which helps our mood. Tryptophan is particularly plentiful in eggs, fish, poultry, nuts, and dairy products. Aim for a serving of protein (about the size of your palm) with each meal. In addition to protein, we also need Magnesium, Vitamin B6, and Vitamin C to make serotonin, so be sure to include colorful fruits and vegetables with each meal to get a variety of vitamins and minerals. Furthermore, the carbohydrates within fruits and vegetables help ensure that tryptophan crosses the bloodbrain barrier into the cerebrospinal fluid where it’s converted to serotonin. Regarding the second way our bodies make neurotransmitters, research has shown that certain bacteria produce calming neurotransmitters such as

mood. Sitting or standing in front of a light box (10,000 Lux, which mimics outdoor light) for 30-60 minutes in the morning hours was found to be as effective as a common prescription antidepressant with fewer side effects, faster onset, and no black box warning! You can find these light boxes online and have them delivered to your residence. If the above strategies don’t feel sufficient for you, contact your Functional Medicine provider for additional ideas. For example, there is a urine test that can measure your current neurotransmitter levels, which then allows your provider to make more targeted nutrition and serotonin and GABA, whereas Moving daily not only helps you supplement suggestions. How to Reduce Impulsive Eating While Sheltering In Place

W

ith recent events forcing people to stay at home many are worried that the stress, combined with a more sedentary lifestyle, could result in unhealthy weight gain. This worry is proven by the fact thousands of people are searching for ways to prevent it. Following this information, the not for profit advice specialists at Flawless.org discovered a huge surge in Google searches for terms related to weight loss and food:

+190% increase in searches for ‘weight loss friendly foods’

+80% increases in searches for ‘low calorie meals’

+80% increases in searches related to ‘foods to avoid when trying to lose weight’

+110% increases in searches related to ‘healthy snacks’

+70% increases in searches related to ‘how to stop snacking at night’ As a result, Flawless.org obtained comments from Alex Ruani, UCL Doctoral Researcher and Chief Science Educator at The Health Sciences Academy, and from Heather Rosa, Dean of the Institute for Optimum Nutrition, who provided some advice on what we can do to reduce impulsive eating habits while being at home. Mr Ruani explains what snacks to avoid and what we can indulge in instead: “We’re seeing many people reporting boredom-eating during the lockdown. But overeating is risky. Good nutrition is needed more than ever, when our immune system may need to fight back. The worst foods to snack on are those which provide ‘empty calories’. That is, foods that are micronutrient-poor and very low in essential vitamins and minerals – usually sugary and processed fatty foods like cakes, biscuits, crisps, milk chocolate, ice cream, and pastries. Some of the best foods to snack on if you don’t want to put on unnecessary weight are:

Foods with a high-water content which makes them more filling as they delay gastric emptying (e.g. fresh fruit like grapes, apples, kiwi, melons; low-salt broth soup; homemade ‘thicker’ smoothies; corn cobs; mixed salad bowl).

Probiotic-rich foods which are shown to have beneficial effects on the regulation of hungersuppressing hormones GLP-1 and PYY (e.g. fat-free yogurt, kefir, cottage cheese or soft cheese; vegan and lactose-free options are tempeh, miso, sourdough bread, fermented cabbage or pickles).

Fibre-rich foods which are not only physically filling but also help produce hunger-suppressing short-chain fatty acids like butyrate and propionate in the gut (e.g. raw vegetable crudités, baby carrots, cucumber slices with hum-

isolation and use your fresh foods and those with a shorter shelf life first. 2. Hydrate first. Sipping water instead of sugary drinks is the simplest way to limit unnecessary snacking and excess calories. Besides that, we know from research that drinking water before each meal, ideally a couple of 250ml glasses, results in fewer calories eaten and a reduced likelihood of putting on weight. 3. Prioritize home-cooked family meals. Main meals remain the most important. Snacking is secondary and, in many cases, unnecessary. We’re spending more time at home, which gives new opportunities to experiment with home-cooking and to share meals together. Heather Rosa, Dean of the Institute for Optimum Nutrition added the following: “Lockdown is the ideal time to break the snacking habit. Our approach is to reduce and eliminate snacking. To do this we would focus on the main meals of the day ensuring they are nutrient -dense and low in sugar to prevent the triggers for snacking. Ensure protein at each meal along with some healthy fats for satiety and fat-soluble vitamins A, E and D. e.g. butter, cold-pressed extra virgin oil, beef dripping, goose fat mus, porridge oat flakes). and coconut oil. Somewhere Over the Rainbow: Overcoming Hopelessness in a World of Unrealistic Expectations By Patti Ashley, PhD.

R

enee Zellweger’s Academy Award-winning performance as Judy Garland in the film Judy eloquently portrayed the hopelessness hidden beneath the studied appearance of a seemingly bright and happy woman, a movie star who by all rights should have “had it all”. In her acceptance speech, Zellweger attributed the award to Garland, who “lives among the heroes who unite and define us”. A hero is a person who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities. Based on that definition, it might not seem as if Garland was a hero. However, her suffering does unite us in a collective hope of overcoming the pain she was incapable of healing in her lifetime. Garland’s pain derived from the unrealistic expectations she was constantly forced to try and live up to. So many of us suffer that same pressure- either from the media, social media, family, friends, or even ourselves. Isn’t it time we learned to overcome that pain by embracing and loving our authentic selves? Zellweger was a perfect fit for the role of Judy Garland, as both she and Garland convey vulnerability and sensitivity-personally and professionally. Zellweger lost quite a bit of weight to play the role of Garland. Yet, in Zellweger’s earlier Bridgett Jones movies she played an average sized woman who was sometimes fat-shamed because she didn’t live up to the body-image standard seen in the media. Bridgett portrayed the experience of many women wishing to be media-sized perfect. Still, in each of these roles, Zellweger’s characters came to accept themselves as they were, which is a great story for all of us who try to live up to the media’s expectations for body weight. Healing Victim Consciousness and Judgement By Rob Schwartz

A

s I describe in my new book Your Soul’s Gift: The Healing Power of the Life You Planned Before You Were Born, a great shift in consciousness is now occurring on our planet. This shift depends completely upon those of us who are in body to raise our vibration, which means, quite simply, being the most loving people we can be. As we raise our vibration, Earth rises in vibration as well. Spirit guides, angels, loved ones, and others in the nonphysical realm can send love, wisdom, light, and inspiration to us, but we must receive and embody these gifts. The nonphysical beings who love and guide us cannot create a shift in human consciousness for us. Victim consciousness—the belief that you have been victimized by a person, experience, or life in general—vibrates at a very low frequency. When we understand that we are the powerful creators of all we experience— even if we may not know how or why we created something—we move out of victim consciousness, raise our vibration, and, in turn, raise the vibration of Earth. If your intention is to contribute to the shift in human consciousness, know that moving out of victim mentality is a powerful and magnificent way to do so. Victim consciousness is a false belief, one that has become part of our limited, habitual way of thinking. It has tempting secondary benefits: it’s a way to obtain sympathy from others and a means of bonding with others who also believe themselves to be victims. Victim consciousness and its secondary benefits are not to be judged, though. After all, it’s easy to believe what we have been taught, and natural to want support from, and bonding with, others. My intent is not to judge the choice to perceive ourselves as victims, but rather to clarify that it is a choice. The alternate choice is to come into remembrance of our identity and power as expressions of the eternal souls that planned the lives we now live, to know ourselves as the creators, not the victims, of our experiences. This awareness uplifts the entire world. Victim consciousness tends to be selfperpetuating. If you believe yourself to be a victim, you vibrate at the frequency of victim and energetically draw to yourself experiences that will confirm in your mind that you are a victim. One key to breaking this cycle is to release blame, for blame places you vibrationally at the frequency of victim consciousness. We may more easily release blame when we take responsibility for having agreed to our life plans, and the personal stories of pre-birth planning in Your Soul’s Gift are intended to help you do just that.. Such self-responsibility is the fertile ground in which expanded consciousness and selfknowledge blossom. Like victim consciousness, judgment

understand pre-birth planning, our judgments evaporate and are replaced by an abiding respect and admiration for the courageous souls who face such challenges. Judgment may, however, be a useful tool for gaining insight into your life plan. Ask yourself, “What trait do I judge most harshly in the people who are in my life?” Then ask, “What is the opposite of that trait?” In all likelihood, before you were born you wanted to develop and express that opposite quality. In regard to the trait you have judged in someone else, it is likely you had that trait in a past life, and it is certain you have that trait (to some degree) now. All judgment of others is cloaked self-judgment. If you did not have the trait you judge, you would either be unable to recognize it in another or you would not judge it if you did see it. Because what we experience outside ourselves is always a projection of our inner reality, it is not possible for us to be in nonjudgment of another until we are wholly in nonjudgment of ourselves. Speaking nonjudgmental words and engaging in nonjudgmental actions are not indicators of being in nonjudgment. The one true indicator of nonjudgment is how we experience If you believe yourself to be a ourselves, for that is how we truly experience victim, you vibrate at the others. Care must be taken here not to go into frequency of victim and judgment of judgment. Although none of us energetically draw to yourself enjoys being judged, we chose for good reason incarnate in a time in human evolution in experiences that will confirm in to which judgment is commonplace. Simply put, your mind that you are a victim. judgment is a powerful teacher for us, and some of us learn best through the experience of being judged. That experience is an effective resonates at a very low frequency. Judgment means by which to develop empathy, creates separation, separation creates fear, compassion, and many other divine virtues. and fear creates most of the problems in our The lives we plan before we are born are world. The current shift in human opportunities to develop and express such consciousness is in part a return to Oneness or virtues. unity consciousness, which is our natural state of being in our nonphysical Home. We cannot return to this state of Oneness consciousness if Rob Schwartz is a hypnotist who we are in judgment of, and therefore separate offers Between Lives Soul from, one another. Journey with Empowerment By Shelly Wilson AS AN INTUITIVE MEDIUM, my purpose is to assist others on their journey into consciousness by empowering them to recognize and acknowledge the guidance they are receiving for themselves. Our Solar Plexus chakra is the energetic center of our knowingness, also referred to as our “gut instinct.” As we tune into this power center, we become more empowered to stand in our power and to feel safe in shining our Light bright. Why is self-empowerment significant to our spiritual growth? What does standing in your power mean? No one is going to empower you. This is something we must do for ourselves; and the sooner we start, the better off we will be. Here’s what standing in your own power means: It means being your authentic self—allowing yourself to be who you really are with all people all of the time. In doing so, you are exhibiting the courage and strength to be seen and heard. This kind of courage is standing in your power. This involves communicating your needs and desires to others as well as to yourself. Standing in your power simply means “owning” what you believe to be true and then speaking your truth. Emanating this power in your words and actions requires no thought when you become accustomed to doing so. Throughout your life, some people may try to control you or the choices you are making. When you allow this to happen, you are either consciously or subconsciously giving your power away to another. Do you recognize when this happens? How does it make you feel?

while not compromising yourself in the process. 7. Trust the guidance you are receiving. You may not understand the how, when, why, what and where details, but it is important to acknowledge the guidance you are receiving and express your gratitude for receiving it. 8. Be patient with your progress. Cease the mind chatter and negative self-talk. Honor yourself and what you are feeling.

No one is going to empower you. This is something we must do for ourselves; and the sooner we start, the better off we will be. Any time a pattern or experience repeats itself, choose to acknowledge the pattern and then allow yourself to see things from a Higher perspective. These experiences will continue to repeat themselves until you recognize the lesson the experience is offering. You may be guided to ask these questions. What am I supposed to learn from this experience? Why do I feel this way? Tips to Become Empowered 1. Ground and center your energy while consciously bringing your energy to this present moment. You are in the flow of manifestation when you are living in the here and now rather than dwelling in the past or planning the future. 2. Have the courage to be who you are always and in all ways. There is no need to carry the energy of what others may think or say about you. Each one of us is having our own human life experience. Choose to honor your experience as well as everyone else’s experience. 3. Say what you mean to say. When you speak your truth, you

will recognize the importance of hearing the truth from others. Be mindful when communicating and discern if you are coming from a place of love or fear/lack. Communicate your needs and desires to yourself and to others. Don’t assume that everyone can read your mind. You have to speak up. 4. Listen to what your body is telling you. Pay attention to the sensations that you feel physically. As you heighten your awareness and tune in, you will be accustomed to recognizing this communication. 5. Surrender and release to Spirit/the Universe anything you cannot control. The five things you can actually control are your own thoughts, words, actions, emotions and responses. 6. Choose to be conscious of the energy you are emitting. Are you sending mixed signals to the Universe with your thoughts/ words and actions? When you align your thoughts, words and actions with your beliefs, you are walking your talk and talking your walk. People may have differing beliefs, so it is important to honor their beliefs as well in a loving way

Spiritual Horoscope 13

May Horoscope Taurus (April 20 – May 20) Happy birthday, Taurus! With so many planets turning retrograde, this month will be peaceful and thoughtful for you. Meditate on what you really want in life, be it material items, work accomplishments, relationship improvements, or spiritual goals. Then make a list of actual tiny actions you can take each day that will directly lead to their fulfillment. Slow and steady will bring awesome results by September or sooner! Also, seek out friends who are active if you’ve been sluggish during this past winter/quarantine! Gemini (May 21 – June 20) Please watch your self-talk and vow to no longer say mean things to yourself! Venus, the planet of love and appreciation, is retrograding in your sign. Make it your spiritual practice to be kind and compassionate to yourself no matter how entrenched this nasty habit may be. You’ll notice your skin gets more radiant; your mood will brighten; your prosperity will even increase! Tell trusted friends and family what you’re doing so they can keep you accountable. Cancer (June 21 – July 22) Meditate to release old hurts in relationships. This means in current partnerships as well as in previous connections. Ponder your parents, and how you’ve been “imprinted” by events from childhood. It’s a powerful time when you can “rewire” yourself to change the way you feel as you relate to others, and even shift the “frequency signal” you send out. You’ll attract people better suited for the “new you” that you’re creating by understanding your subconscious programming. You’ll even open doors for more prosperity! Leo (July 23 – Aug. 22) You have such a big, generous heart! Meditate on your friendships and partnerships to see if your giving nature is being reflected to you. If you feel taken advantage of, or even think you’re in a co-dependent type situation, create healthy boundaries and stick with them. (This goes for work situations as

well.) If single, you can meet a sexy new person who understands the sacredness of connection. Reconnect with old friends for whom you’ve been “too busy.” You’ll realize how vital they are! Virgo (Aug. 23 – Sept. 22) This month meditate on boundaries and safety. Ponder your immune system, how it keeps you protected from all sorts of invaders and germs. Chinese medicine describes the “wei qi” field, which is a vital force of energy that protects the body. Think of the strength of your spiritual energy or think of angels protecting you. Feeling safe physically helps you be calmer in your mind about work stress and emotional issues. You can better tap inner resources for solutions! Relationships will be smoother, work problems resolved, and even money will flow better! Libra (Sept. 23 – Oct. 22) Fall in love with your spiritual practices. If you’re doing them out of duty, find new techniques you are drawn to at this time. What would you look forward to? Perhaps walking in nature is your new meditation. Or listening to music that moves your spirit and even dancing to it as well. You’ll reconnect with a level of passion within that you haven’t felt for quite a while! Work will be busy, so tap into your intuition to help you. It will be strengthened by your new spiritual “playtime.” (Spiritual discipline sounds too dreary, doesn’t it?!)

Scorpio (Oct. 23 – Nov. 21) Trust your instincts! Your intuition is especially deep right now. Meditation can give internal guidance regarding finances and investments. You can also have profound awareness about your blocks to intimacy that inhibit closeness in general, as well as patterns that exist in current partnerships that inhibit further trust. Open to love and let it heal your heart, no matter how many challenges you’ve faced! Even childhood wounds that have defined you can be healed, and your brain and heart can be rewired for safety and trust. Sagittarius (Nov. 22 – Dec. 21) With both Venus and Jupiter turning retrograde, it’s time to examine spending patterns. Both are abundance planets, so bringing awareness to money “issues” creates a flow for the rest of the year! Do you shop in unconscious ways? Do you have limiting beliefs about finances? Meditate on prosperity and read about spirituality and money. Create a budget that also allows for fun. If partnered, this’ll take a big burden off the relationship. And if single, examine limiting beliefs about partnering that may block love. Capricorn (Dec. 22 – Jan. 19) Be patient, since it may look like you’re not meeting your goals, but you’re laying the groundwork for abundance and success! Stay positive with affirmations. Meditate on future visions that empower and inspire you. Beware of being overly humble or flat-out insulting yourself about your talents, looks, or personality. Stick with friends who remind you of your awesomeness. Challenge your inner critic and tell it to take a hike! Aquarius (Jan. 20 – Feb. 18) Saturn turns retrograde in your sign, asking you to meditate on your priorities. Make a list of the goals you want to pursue. Write down clear, simple steps you can take daily to move toward success, slowly but surely! Small

victories build confidence and inspire you to keep going. Stay connected to your spiritual guides, be they “energies” you feel around you, or people in your world who believe in your future. A new love relationship can start that grows slowly and surprises you with a passionate bond that unfolds over the next few months. Or a current partnership that has seemed hohum lately can re-awaken! Pisces (Feb. 19 – March 20) Energetic Mars moves into your sign until July giving lots of motivation for formulating goals and taking steps to manifest them! Meditation shows you how forgotten dreams can come to life now, since the timing is right. De-clutter your home and workspace so it also de-clutters your mind! You’ll feel clear and focused. Also, create a sacred space for contemplation and revitalization. Aries (March 21 – April 19) Meditate to release old resentments — with others and with yourself too! As you make space in your heart and mind, work and personal success that seem to have been held away from you will start flowing toward you! Go “back to basics” in your spiritual practice with affirmations, deep breathing, simple yoga postures, and clean eating. You’ll have renewed mood and invigorated thoughts. Reach out to old friends and reestablish those loving bonds!
