Motorcycle Ride For Dad cruises into local towns to raise $253,000 for prostate cancer research

MICHELLE PINON PHOTOS

Ron Spragg, (far right), hands over $1,184 to Edmonton Motorcycle Ride For Dad organizers during their stop in Andrew late Saturday morning. The monies were profits from the Andrew Co-op’s annual charity barbecue. Local community organizations, which included: the Andrew Lions Club, Library Board, Minor Hockey, Rainbow Seniors Club, and Agricultural Society chipped in $100 apiece for the fundraiser. Other volunteer organizations, businesses, and village pitched in to supply 1,200 bottles of water to the participants which numbered over 1,000. Michelle Pinon Editor

The rubber hit the road this past Saturday as more than 1,000 motorcycle enthusiasts rolled down area highways to log a few miles and raise some money for prostrate cancer. A total of 1,018 men and women donned leather and hopped aboard their chrome detailed machines to cooperatively raise $253,000 for prostate cancer research and awareness. Ride captain Jeff Mercier said the experience was totally “overwhelming” and all of the riders were touched by

the generosity of people in the communities they visited during the day. “The hospitality of people in these small towns was incredible!” He said the people were very grateful, accomodating, hospitable, and generous. Mercier said participants loved the route, and with the permission of the mayors and town councils, would like to keep it the same for next year. One of those enthusiasts was Kevin House of Edmonton. This was the fifth year he has participated in the Edmonton Motorcycle Ride For Dad. He and his wife Joann, make a wonderful team, and together they

have raised $4,500 these past four years. Gathering up pledges and support through work and personal connections, the pair managed to accumulate a staggering $1,500 in donations for this year’s ride. “It (prostrate cancer) affects a lot of us, so you have to be proactive,” said Kevin, during a rest stop in Lamont. Sherwood Park resident Neil Parke heard about the fundraiser on line and through a motorcycle club, and thought it would be a nice way to hit the open road while helping a good cause. “It (Motorcycle Ride For Dad) seems to be getting

more popular. It’s nice to stop in these towns along the way.” Geoff Closs of Edmonton also wanted to “get out and ride” and had several groups of friends take part in the ride with him. He said it is nice to do what you can while enjoying a nice day out. Stony Plain resident Matthew Pruden was riding with his dad Vern. “He’s a big supporter,” stated Pruden, and has assisted with several different fundraisers for cancer over the years. “It’s a great idea to go out and help a cause.” Joann and Kevin House take time to pose for a picture during a rest stop in Lamont.

Town of Bruderheim welcomes proposed downtown development Mayor says project will create economic growth in the community Michelle Pinon Editor

Realtor and developer Tim Hennigar is ready to help revitalize Bruderheim’s downtown core. Hennigar, is both the buyer and seller of nine lots along Queen Street, and plans to develop a multi-million dollar commercial and residential three story building in the near future. Last week, Hennigar submitted plans and applied for development permits for the proposed project with the Town of Bruderheim. “Everyone is excited about it, and it’s great it will be going ahead,” said Hennigar. “It’s a great little project for downtown,” added Hennigar, and a wonderful space for retailers and tenants. “It should re-energize the downtown area.” The building will be approxi-

Hennigar said the immediate goal is to take advantage of temporary construction workers who are employed in the area. He said the development will also appeal to people who maybe downsizing and want a smaller footprint. Hennigar said the development could accommodate a day care. “There’s a real need for that in Bruderheim.” He said it would be a nice spot for a coffee shop or bistro, as well as a drug store, medical clinic as well as a variety of other small businesses that would look after the day to day needs of residents, He is currently finalizing the plans for the development which

meets all of the requirements in terms of setbacks, parking as well as environmental assessment. “It’s not as simple as it appears to be,” added Hennigar The next step will be for the town to approve the development and hook up water and sewer lines on the property. “The earliest we could break ground would be late fall.” To date a contractor has not been selected, and Hennigar said he hopes local companies will submit bids in the near future. Bruderheim Mayor Karl Hauch said the proposed development will be “very, very significant” for the community...This maybe the catalyst that brings some very significant changes in terms of economic growth for Bruderheim, as well as being a boost to folks looking for something positive happening in our town.” Hauch said the land on Queen Street had been devoid of any development for many years, and that a development of this magnitude would be a welcome sight to those who would like to see Bruderheim move forward. “I believe positive news for any municipality feeds on itself and as I said before, this development would spur more good news for Bruderheim.” The development process is moving along “smoothly” and “effi-

Residents urged to support test drive fundraiser Friends of the Bruderheim School Society need to raise $40,000 for new playground

MICHELLE PINON PHOTO

Students, staff and volunteers with Bruderheim School are hoping to raise $6,000 through the Drive 4UR School test drive event which will be taking place on June 14 between 2:30 and 7:30 p.m. at the school. The event is to help raise funds for a new playground in the community. Pictued from left to right are: Michelle Thompson, Kale Ridsdale, Darcy Willis, Zander Holtzhauer, Breyana Willis, Cynthia Willis, Gage Ridsdale and school principal Sven Danzinger. Michelle Pinon Editor

Even though it only takes is a few minutes of your time, it could make a big difference in the lives of children. It’s the Drive 4UR School promotion, and it’s coming to Bruderheim School this Friday. In the span of five hours, a total of 300 test drives of Ford makes and models of vehicles, could net the Friends of Bruderheim School Society $6,000. Cynthia Willis, one of the event’s organizers, says the proceeds will go towards funds for a new playground, which will cost in the neighbourhood of $40,000 to complete and install. Willis said she heard about a similar fundraiser last year, and approached Heartland Ford in Fort Saskatchewan to see if they’d be interested in sponsoring the event in Bruderheim. Once she got the green light, Willis and other volunteers got together to work out the details. They are very excited about the event, which is being held in conjunction with the parent advisory council’s community wide barbecue and family dance that

evening. Volunteer members of the Bruderheim Fire Department will be serving up hot dogs and hamburgers, and there will be other side dishes supplied by parent council. As well, volunteers will be selling 50/50 tickets during the event. A total of $5,000 will go to the winner and $5,000 will go to the playground. Members have also been collecting pennies and hosting hot lunches throughout the school year for the project. To date, around $3,000 has been raised for the playground. Letters have also been sent to businesses and organizations in the community asking for financial support. Willis is very encouraged by the support the society has received so far, and is looking forward to the fundraiser. What’s also exciting about the playground, is that students got to have direct input as to which types of features they wanted included in the playground. Two designs were drafted, and students got to vote for which design they liked best. If all goes according to plan, volunteers hope to have the playground installed this September.

Memories of yesteryear I was sad to have missed the annual Strawberry Tea at Verdun School on June 2. My Dad has many memories of the one room school he attended in the late 1930’s and forties. The school, which was built in 1902, has since been turned into a designated historical site, and my Dad, along with several other dedicated volunteers, whose parents settled in the Duhamel District southwest of Camrose have ensured its history and place in history is preserved for many more generations to come. My generation, which attended school in the early ‘70’s and 80’s have memories of Strawberry Teas, ball games, and school reunions; while my Dad’s generation remembers walking the three miles or taking the horse and wagon to school with his siblings. The school, which is located approximately three miles from my family’s homestead, is bright and cheerful, and when you walk through the doors you see memorbilia, including books, tin Rogers Syrup lunch pails, woolen baseball uniforms and gloves, and pictures in the foyer. There’s a great big furnace, and lanterns hang from the ceiling. There is an assortment of handcrafted wooden desks, textbooks, the teacher’s desk with large brass bell, blackboard and map of Canada. My fondest memory of the school was attending the annual Strawberry Tea that was held in May. It was exciting because it was the only time of the year that we got to take a different bus to the school after school. Sunshine, laughter, friendly faces greeted you. It was quite loud in the schoolhouse as the men, who stopped to take a break from seeding, were swapping stories as the ladies served homemade sandwiches, coffee, tea, and of course, Angel food cake with strawberries and ice cream. In a way I feel a bit homesick. It’s hard to explain the sense of belonging, caring and sharing that goes on at the social function. It’s also hard to explain why this was such a special and important part of my childhood; since it is only one snippet of many beautiful places and events that shaped my life. It was quite ironic that I had the opportunity to attend the Lamont Health Care Centre’s (LHCC) volunteer appreciation banquet May 30. There, too, folks greeted each other by first name, shaking hands or embracing, and sharing smiles and some lively conversations of their own. Several of the volunteers said they didn’t feel they deserved anything, but I could tell they were really happy to have been acknowledged by staff at the LHCC. The kindness, compassion and caring these people show others are amazing gifts, and the residents are so fortunate to receive them. It’s not everyday you stop to say thank you, but today I toast all the volunteers with the LHCC and the Verdun Historical Committee. Cheers!

Resident says public safety at risk I drive very slow around town because I have had children walk out in front of me without looking, and the same with their bikes, driving across the street without looking. The drivers in this town need to slow down and we need to get rid of yield signs and replace them with stop signs. Other towns have stop signs and cameras at intersections and police patrols. We have nothing so a few people take liberties in our town. We need to look after the most vulnerable people in town, who are children and seniors. A senior was injured at our new town office this past summer. They use a wooden pallet as a step up from the parking area to the sidewalk leading to the nightime drop slot. The woman says when she stepped on the pallet

there was a broken board and she stepped in the hole where the broken board was and fell and injured herself. Apparently the pallet had been left with a broken board for weeks. She sued the town over this incident. I see they screwed a piece of plywood over the pallet now, which would be ok if they put a non-slip material over the plywood because plywood is very slippery when wet. Another area that needs repair is the sidewalk at the street in front of the main entrance to the hospital. The concrete is broken and chunks of concrete are missing. This is a tripping hazard and leaves us open to another law suit. Why do town workers not repair this? There are potholes between Burger Baron

restaurant and the town office that need repair. Some child on a bike will fall there. Another safety issue is dangerous dogs running loose. We had a pitbull running loose in our neighbourhood Friday night. This dog killed my neighbour’s cat. We have reported this dog and other dogs running loose to the bylaw enforcement office, but he does nothing about it. I have discussed this with problem with members of town council, and nothing has changed. I have read Thompsons’ 26 page report on the Town of Lamont’s website. He said nothing about public safety. How can you write 26 pages about a town and not include safety? Lately we had a group ask town council why we have no police patrols at

night. During the day police can be seen parked all day at the satellite office across from the post office, but at night when the drug houses are busy and we have drunks speeding around town, no police are around. There should be a three way stop on main street at the drug store (50th Ave. and 51 St.) to slow drivers. I own properties in different towns and deal with town managers and town councils. They have mayors who are hands on people and get out and ride with the police and see problem areas, and make sure town workers are keeping roads and sidewalks in good shape. Maybe our mayor and town council should get out more. Brian Sparks

Lamont Health Care Centre honours its volunteers Michelle Pinon Editor

Volunteers who serve with the Lamont Health Care Centre (LHCC) were treated to a buffet breakfast May 30. Around 25 volunteers were on hand to enjoy scones, sausages, eggs, hash browns, toast, fruit, muffins and more to celebrate their special gifts and contributions to the facility and the residents they serve.

Bingos, field and shopping trips, games are just some of the activities volunteers help out with throughout the year. Rev. Deborah Brill, eloquently expressed her thoughts during a prayer of thanksgiving to those who selflessly give to another that was recited before breakfast began. “We are not called to see through each other; rather we are called to see each other through. And there is no greater

demonstration of that than through the gift of volunteering,” stated Brill. She also blessed the volunteers and prayed for the good gifts of food and time and for those who set the tables and prepared the food. Harold James, chief executive officer, not only recognized the volunteers, but the organizations they represent, some of which include: the Knights of Columbus, Catholic

Women’s League, LHCC hospital auxiliary, and the Lamont Lions Club. “I’d like to acknowledge the value you bring to LHCC and its residents...You need to pat yourselves on the back.” Kent Harrold, LHCC board chairman, spoke about the goodness volunteers bring to the residents and the important role they play in their lives. “Your work is important for our facility and our community, and

that’s what keeps communities healthy.” Harrold also acknowledged the services offered through pastoral care, and through staff members. Wendy Horricks thanked the volunteers on behalf of fellow staff and residents. Staff members also distributed commemorate centennial t-shirts and plants for the volunteers before the end of the event.

Motor vehicle accident leaves six teens with minor injuries

Jazmine Inkster Student Reporter

Six teenagers were taken to hospital with minor injuries after the vehicle they were in hit the ditch early Sunday morning. Fort Saskatchewan RCMP responded at approximately 3:30 am. The youth were all

between the ages of 16 and 17, and were heading westbound on Township Road 580 towards Range Road 220 when they crashed. The vehicle was a blue Dodge Ram truck, and according to the police, the driver did not show any signs of impairment. There were seven youth in the vehicle, and

none had life threatening injuries of the six who were taken to the hospital, with most only suffering from lacerations from the broken glass. The accident is still under investigation, and so far it is uncertain whether there will be charges laid against those involved.

New polymer $5 and $10 bill designs revealed by Bank of Canada Leslie Cholowsky Editor

The Bank of Canada has unveiled the designs for the last two paper currency denominations to be issued in polymer; the five and 10 dollar notes will be released later this year. Both notes will still feature the same prime ministers on the fronts, with Sir Wilfred Laurier on the $5, and Sir John A. McDonald on the $10, with an updated look, as a full colour photo of each will also appear on the clear portion of the bills. The back of the $10 will feature a train and the Rocky Mountains, while the $5 back salutes Canadians in space, with

the Canadarm2, and Dextre, the Canadiandesigned space robot, along with a generic astronaut figure floating in space. The new $5 design was recently unveiled by Canadian Astronaut Commander Col. Chris Hadfield while on board the International Space Station. Feedback on the design of the notes varies from ‘cartoonish’ on the $5 to confusing, as people don’t immediately recognize what ‘Dextre’ refers to; while focus groups commented that the train and mountains depicted on the $10 were ‘old-fashioned’ and uninspiring. The polymer notes appear to be doing what

they were designed for, as the reported number of counterfeit Canadian banknotes dropped again in 2012, continuing an eight-year trend. The Bank of Canada says there are about two

billion banknotes in circualtion today, and estimate 28 conterfeit notes in every million, amounting to $1.6 million. RCMP report seeing just six counterfeit poly-

THANK YOU

________________________ To All of Our Heros in Viking: On June 2, 2013, we had a fire in our garage. Everything happened so fast, yet we were blessed with the people who came to our aid. We would like to thank all of our friends and neighbours who were there for us. To Const. Sam Smith for his compassion and assistance during our time of need. We just cannot say enough about the Viking Fire Department for the great job they did. I guess we just don’t know what we have until we need them. We are a very lucky community to have these people who are there for us. Thank you! We have a very special town here and also the people in it. ~Kirby & Kate Rabby 21p ________________________

Local couple ‘patiently’ anticipating their upcoming missions trip to Ensenada A life of missions work awaits them in a Mexican bible college, where they can live their dream Jazmine Inkster Student Reporter

It is a personal goal given by God. That is how Darren and Diane Wilson see their upcoming full time missions trip to Ensanada, Mexico. The two will be heading down to Calvary Chapel Bible College there in an effort to give their lives to do God’s work in both themselves, and students who are there. “God did a complete 180 in our lives” explains Diane, who says originally, she didn’t know where she was going to go, or what she was going to do, only that she was meant to serve in missions which she had known since she was 12years-old. It was a missionary from Thailand who had truly shown her where

she was meant to be during a service at the couple’s church in October of 2011. Diane says that although she was excited to take the first steps, she was originally nervous, and unsure of how to tell Darren that “It was time to go.” However, it soon came clear that they both felt the same. “I felt like there was something missing,” says Darren, who added that he had actually felt pulled to the missions work a little bit before the service that had solidified Diane’s beliefs so strongly. During a visions quest in March of last year, the couple took a trip to an orphanage just outside of Ensenada. Originally believing that this was where they were meant to be, Diane says she was surprised when she recalled a dream that she

had had the night before they left. In her dream, she saw a large white building with a red roof, and saw

lots of people around the building. Not children. When she came to the orphanage, she realized that this was not the building she had seen in her dream. As fate would have it, the orphanage was already fully staffed. It was a staff member from the orphanage that then directed her to the college. When they went to visit the college, the couple found themselves in

the place that they felt was right to them. “We pulled around the corner, and there was the building,” remembers Diane. “I didn’t want to go home,” adds Darren “I wanted to stay.” The two will both be working at the college when the time comes that they are ready to go, Diane as an office administrator and academic advisor, and Darren working on the maintenance and security side of things. The goal of the college is to prepare its students to become missionaries and create churches all around Mexico. Currently there are 50 students, but they even-

tually want to be able to accommodate 800 students. There are 116 million people in Mexico explains the couple, who remember seeing how many of the people there were struggling, living in small houses with many people, and trying to find food. “The physical need is great, but so is the spiritual,” explains Diane. However, there are a number of things that the couple has to get sorted out before they can leave. They need to raise enough funding to be able to support themselves once they get out there, they also have to take three months of lan-

guage training, a course that will cost them $5,000.00 “It’s quite the adventure” adds Diane. They hope that once they get everything sold here in town, that everything will just fall into place and they will be able to go. “I know we have to be patient,” states Darren, who also says that all in all, he won’t miss the snow. Darren and Diane will also be holding a garage and bake sale this upcoming weekend to help add to the funds they need to raise, which totals $10,000 in start up costs, and $3,500 in monthly allowances.

Andrew School’s second annual Run for the Bus fundraiser surpasses expectations by a mile Michelle Pinon Editor

Andrew School’s Run for the Bus keeps rolling along and gaining momentum. The second annual installment of the fundraiser, which is designed to offset travel expenses for athletic teams at the K-Grade 12 school, reached the $8,400 mark this year. Athletics Director Cory Kokotailo said it was a wonderful day (June 1) for the event which saw between 35 and 40 participants which included students, parents, staff, as well as current and former residents. “Trustee Colleen Lopushinsky started the day off for us with a small speech about how

much events like this mean to small communities and to small schools, and how the support that day was helping to keep kids in sport at Andrew School.” Matt Levicki, who attended Andrew School in the ‘90’s, participated and donated to the cause. “He showed up at the end of the race to donate and say how he has heard what a great program we have at Andrew School and he is very happy these students are getting these opportunities.” Kokotailo was very happy with the results of the fundraiser. “We surpassed last year’s total for fundraising and set the bar pretty high for next year with the $8,370 raised this year.”

“This takes a lot of pressure off the program to raise funds through team fees, sponsorships and other fundraisers, and allows us to give the students a rewarding experience in the sports.” He went onto say the goal has always been that athletics is more than just sports, “it is life” and enriches the lives of students. “We have travelled around the province for volleyball, and we’ve made memories on the way. We took pictures in Drumheller on the way to Medicine Hat. “We have dinosaurs and hoodoos covered with athletes. We stopped on the Yellowhead Highway to take a picture at the highest point of the

Yellowhead. These events, along with sports events, are lasting memories for students when they leave Andrew School.” The run is so much more than a fundraiser. “It is a whole community event. It attracts attention to our school, and most importantly, it gives students something to strive for, a goal when we spend our time in practice and physical education training.” So definately, there will be a third annual Run for the Bus next June, and Kokotailo will be one of the first enlisting support for the betterment of students and all people in the community.

Shumka to headline Babas and Borsch Ukrianian Festival Organizers of Babas & Borsch Ukrainian Festival (BBUF) are pleased to announce that the world famous professional dance troupe, Ukrainian Shumka Dancers will perform at the Saturday night Zabava (party) this summer. They have been described as “turning the idea of folk dance into a living, breathing art form.” “About 30 of their dancers will perform in Andrew, August 24th,” said Festival Coordinator Hazel Anaka. “And there

are no balcony seats here,---with a floor level performance you can’t get much closer to the heart-stopping action.” “With about 20 members of The Ukrainian Male Chorus of Edmonton singing a cappella between dances, ticket holders that night will be treated to some of the best Ukrainian culture has to offer: dance and song. And let’s not forget about the mouthwatering dinner that will be enjoyed as well. Maxine Zakordonski, head caterer at St. John’s

Cultural Centre in Edmonton will bring her magic to the menu. All to be followed by dance music provided by (former Andrew-ite) Ernie Shupenia’s Prairie Rose Band,” added Anaka. Tickets are now on sale. They are expected to sell out quickly. To be sure to get yours go to or clip the order form in this week’s In Focus page.
