DENPASAR - Widespread growth of alternative tourist destinations indirectly eroding the culture as foundation of Bali tourism was considered to be a threat to local tourism perpetrators. Regional Coordinator of ASITA for Bali, NTB and NTT Region, Bagus Sudibya, stated that public would only be as spectators and not as subjects or perpetrators in tourism if commitment of government to promote the culture-based tourism was undertaken half-heartedly.

“Bali is cultural tourism. Why to choose cultural concept? Of course, it is intended to involve Balinese people. On that account, the shift from culture and tourism to eroticism will be a serious threat,” said Bagus Sudibya in Denpasar. According to him, cultural tourism posed a type of tourism based on the mosaic of places, traditions, art and

ceremonies reflecting the diversity and identity of local community. Bali inspired by culture should get critical attention from all parties. With the earnest attention was expected to provide benefits for the greater prosperity of the people without sacrificing the noble values becoming the soul of Balinese culture and Hindu devotees. Bali News Nusa Dua-Benoa Toll Way Project

Badung Cancelled Investment Questioned Mangupura (Bali Post) –

The plan to invest on the new above waters Nusa Dua-Benoa toll way by Badung Government is still unclear as in the middle of the coming 2012 budget discussion not a single word was telling that they will when actually in the beginning Badung was appreciating this investment positively in State Owned Enterprises Board consortium. In the KUA Plan (Expenses Policy Regional Fee point) of Badung’s year 2012, there’s an allocation of Modal (investment) of IDR 7 billion only when in investing on the toll way it needs more than that as the project itself will take up to IDR 1,2 trillion, at least around 240 billion with the note does not need a completion of payment in one year. In the Badung House of Representatives general assembly last Monday (20/6) the Democrat Party fraction

stated a public’s view of a question where Badung Regent was asked again for the allocation budget and capital for the toll way’s consortium besides the one for Regional Development Bank (BPD) as much as 25 percent. It was confirmed after the assembly Vice Regent I Ketut Sudikerta seemed denying in giving comments and only gave normative statements where this fraction statement will be discussed with executives and legislatives. Before, the Regent said it

was too early to discuss it. This project was one of a strategic infrastructure that was planned to be specially made to mend the traffics in South Badung. In the general assembly Golkar Party Fraction seemed to convince to increase the facilities quality and if it needs to Badung should make a way up to World Class Infrastructure. With the decreasing quality and complains, Badung Government should prioritise in mending and developing such priorities. (kmb25)

‘Lasso’ of enchantment

Presented through Japanese Taiko music CONNOISSEURS of arts in Bali are very lucky. In the annual grandiose event of the 33rd Bali Arts Festival (BAF), they have a chance to see various art performances supported by artists from around the world. Some overseas participants were playing individually, while others were collaborating with local Balinese artists. One of the overseas participants was the musician community of Akugawa High School, Osaka, Japan that appeared in the Open Stage of ISI Denpasar, Sunday (Jun 19) evening. For about two hours, all spectators were fascinated by the Taiko Japanese traditional music dominated by percussion. At that night, the overseas participating artists consisting of senior high school students provided valuable lessons to Balinese people about the meaning of true love against the arts of cultural heritage. Though the globalization onslaught pounded Japan so fiercely offering a glittering variety of performing arts, they never turned away from the authenticity of Japanese culture. With a great pride, the community of young Japanese artists was proud to introduce the Taiko traditional music to Balinese people. “Musical composition presented in the arena of the 33rd Bali Arts Festival Taiko roots in the traditional music remaining to develop well in Japan. The musical instrument resembling a drum is made of the leather of pregnant cow. In the performance, the rhythmic and dynamic pounding music is often combined

with the sound of Shinobue Japanese flute and Syamisen traditional string music as accentuation,” said Hiromi Kubota, the stage coordinator, when met by Bali Post in the midst of her performance. Japanese woman who spoke Bahasa Indonesia fluently enough added that her party also brought a number of creation or contemporary music. However, she assured if those creations remained to refer to Japanese traditional values of Taiko music as foundation in the creativity. “Our performance in this BAF is aimed at introducing the Japanese tradition in the form of Taiko music to Balinese people as well as strengthening the brotherhood of Japan and Bali that has been established so well,” she said. ‘Lasso’ of enchantment presented by the yellowskinned group of musicians was commenced with a musical composition ‘Da’ and ended with ‘Festa’ describing the atmosphere of festive party of Japanese community. At that night, the young Japanese artist community featured nine musical illustrations consisting of Da, Chura, Sakuya Konohana, Hanagasa, Awa Odori, Kiyari, Chicibu and Festa. They also presented a number of Japanese traditional dances as a short connecting instrumental music or intermezzo to the next song. Such amazing art presentation replete with charms was concluded with the singing of Indonesia Pusaka (Indonesian Heritage) that was spontaneously followed by the audience. (ian)

Unstoppable, agricultural land conversion in Denpasar Denpasar (Bali Post)—

Depletion of urban green open space (RTHK) in Denpasar is quite reasonable. Considering, the current population growth in Denpasar is quite high. The data released by Central Statistics Agency (BPS) of Denpasar indicate that population growth in Denpasar reached 4 percent. The impact of high population growth also threatens the agricultural land area in Denpasar. Head of Denpasar Agriculture, Food Crops and Horticulture, Nyoman Putra Ambara, when contacted on Monday (Jun 20) said that conversion of agricultural land in Denpasar tended to be used for housing. However, he also admitted that other than for residential area, it was used for road and other needs. By and large, he said, the land conversion reached 20-30 hectares per year. It was inseparable from the increased economic activities. Additionally, high prices of land in Denpasar also encouraged landowners to sell their rice fields. To suppress the land conversion, he said, there had many programs launched to farmers. Aside from providing convenience in marketing, the Agricultural Services was

also providing seeds and improving the facilities and infrastructure of subak organization. The helps consisted of creating irrigation channel being very important for farmers. Not only that, government also extended assistance in the form of agricultural device to suppress the interests of farmers to sell their land. His party also coordinated with the Denpasar Urban Planning of Housing not to issue any building permits in agricultural area. “We do hope there will be no more building permits issued for green belt,” he said. Ambara Putra also admitted, the extent of 41 subak organizations existing in Denpasar was not distributed evenly. Some subaks had only 10 hectares. However, there

were also subaks remaining to survive until now, such as Subak Kerdung whose area covered 250 hectares. “A subak in Denpasar, namely Subak Sanglah, does not leave any land because they have been converted to residential and other needs,” he said. Meanwhile, the Head of Commission B of Denpasar House, Eko Supriadi, said that high rate of land conversion in green belt was inseparable from the lack of supervision. So far, there were many cases coming into view regarding to spatial violations, but they were not imposed with a clear sanction. Such cases triggered the appearance of other violations. “I think this must have been caused by less maximal supervision,” said Eko. (kmb12)

Operator and attendant of Internet Cafe overrun A perpetrator arrested, three at large Denpasar (Bali Post)—

Brutal action under influence of alcoholic drink was committed by four young men named Yudi Winata alias Doyok, Maulana alias Ceper, Sofi and Arifin, Saturday (Jun 18) morning. They, who later on were known to be drunk, overrun the operator of Internet Cafe Khystian Dewa Made Saputra and Pande Artawan. They were beaten by the gangster of four until causing quite serious injuries. Such brutal action occurred in Game Online Internet Café on Jalan Nangka, Denpasar, at around 00:30 a.m. The four perpetrators came to the scene in a drunken condition. Without further ado, one of the perpetrators called down the cafe attendant Artawan. When he went out of the Cafe, he strangled the victim while saying angry words. The victim was fear and just kept silent. Meanwhile, other perpetrators came into the Cafe and approached the operator’s desk. There was the victim Dewa Saputra. As the previous action committed against the victim Artawan, these perpetrators directly hit him. Even, the blow against Dewa Saputra was slightly more fatal. As consequence, the victim suffered serious injuries. Aside from blown with bare hands, perpetrators also hit the victim with a

chair. Ambience at the scene was strained. The perpetrators acting like gangster made visitors of the cafe afraid. Not only that, other than beating and overrunning the victims, perpetrators also sneaked money worth IDR 200,000 and KYT helmet. “Perpetrators were also damaging motorcycle parked in front of the Cafe,” said Chief of East Denpasar Police, I Gusti Nyoman Wintara, Monday (Jun 20). Being satisfied with their action, they were then ran away. Meanwhile, the victims reported the case to East Denpasar Police. Once receiving the report of victims, Chief Wintara ordered Chief Unit of Criminal Detective, Agus Prihadinika, to conduct investigation. Shortly after that, one of the perpetrators (Doyok—Ed) could be captured at his home on Jalan Drupadi III B/2, Denpasar. Unfortunately, three others (Ceper, Sofi and Arifin—Ed) were still unknown up to these days. Police were still hunting them. However, sooner or later, all three actors would be certainly going to be arrested. “I ask the three perpetrators of the attack to surrender to East Denpasar Police,” asserted Chief Wintara to media crew last Monday. Further, Chief Wintara said that motive of the beatings was the perpetrators wanted to hold a drinking

party. Meanwhile, they run out of money to buy drinks and were already in a drunken condition. At the end, they were desperate to commit such brutal action. “Since running out of drinks, we were forced

to do so. The cash amounting to IDR 200,000 was used to buy arrack,” admitted Doyok plainly. Additionally, Doyok admitted the helmet taken had been mortgaged and the proceeds were used

to buy more drinks. “We ensnare them by article 170. However, there is one perpetrator entangled with the case of theft for taking money and a helmet,” added Chief Wintara. (kmb21)

Culture Tourism Soul Diminishing Tourists Will Leave Bali

Since the shifting Bali tourism characteristic from being a traditional art area which then replaced by animal attractions also erotic entertainment caused Bali House of Representatives Vice Head of Commission IV, Ketut Kariyasa Adnyana and education, social and culture expert Drs. Putu Sarjana, M.Si., worried that these will slowly and potentially ‘kill’ Bali’s tourism sector as Bali tourism has lost its identity and no longer unique nor exclusive which so Bali will be left by tourists including national and international. “We often forgot that the developing and improving Bali has its great arts and culture also great views of nature and spitituality character of the public,” Kariyasa and Sarjana stated when contacted by Bali Post last Monday (20/6). Having such zoos or gardens of animals was no wrong to be placed in Bali and became one of the attractions. Even so, it has to be con-

trolled and not overloaded by it and sinking Balinese unique culture art as its main attraction. Moreover erotic tourism seemed to be held on hidden places of night entertainments and also happening in hotels. “This shift of having non Balinese values in our tourism needs a smart action taken by the Bali Government itself also regency and city governments of the whole Bali especially in having policies on limiting non Balinese tourist attractions constructions or creations,” Sarjana explained. Contacted separately, Bali Province Secretariat Public Relation and Protocol, Ketut Teneng, clarified that the government is commit and consistent in developing Bali’s tourism on the base of Balinese culture. If there have been different attractions, he is sure the regency/city government has its own limit in giving investors the chance to open such thing. “Before the permit was given, I am sure the connected institute has research what was possible and what was not also if it’s worth

given a permit. All of it has to has its research first. If it’s filled up, I’m sure there won’t be anymore permits given out for it as it will cause unhealthy competition,” he explained. Moreover, Teneng declined the fact that government does not care of Balinese artists as Bali Government keeps on giving awards to senior artists and artists that has an achievement also loyal, has a high commitment in digging, developing also preserving Bali’s culture. He said Governor is now planning to create continuous performances in Art Centre for the Balinese artists and so Art Centre did not only heat up when Bali Arts Festival hits once a year. Besides functioned as a development and preservation, this was also to give a more varieties of culture art performances to the tourists. Weirdly, the Governor has stated this promise since last year’s Bali Arts Festival closing ceremony. (ian)

Greece’s centenarian flag-raiser dies at 107 Associated Press Writer

THESSALONIKI, Greece – For nearly half a century, she raised a Greek flag every day at the border with Turkey — a simple act that elevated her to national status. A funeral service was held Monday for 107-yearold Vasiliki Lambidou in the village of Marasia, located in the country’s remote northeast. She died on Sunday. Lambidou had lived in the same house a few dozen yards (meters) from the Greek-Turkish border along the Evros river since 1962. She raised the flag over her home — the closest one to the border — every day since. She was much loved by generations of army conscripts, for whom she cooked and did laundry while they manned a guard post near her house. Soldiers would reciprocate by giving her food and wood for her fireplace. Numerous photographs of soldiers who served there hang on

the walls of her house. Lambidou, whose family was among hundreds of thousands who were part of a population exchange with Turkey following a war in 1921, was honored numerous times by Greek regional and national authorities. Greek President Karolos Papoulias had visited Lambidou at her home in January. Lambidou was buried with full military honors. The Greek flag draping her coffin was handed to her granddaughter. Senior army staff who attended the funeral praised Lambidou’s dedication. “She was a mother to all soldiers, to all Greeks,” said Greece’s Army Chief of Staff Frangos Frangoulis. Area military commander, Colonel Nikolaos Manolakos, said the Greek flag would continue to be raised at Lambidou’s home in her memory. Greece and Turkey have had historically strained relations, but ties have improved drastically over the past decade.

Tunisia’s Ben Ali sentenced in absentia to 35 years in jail Reuters

TUNIS, Jun – A Tunisian court sentenced former president Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali in absentia on Monday to 35 years in jail, six months after his overthrow in a revolution helped to inspire the “Arab Spring.”

AP Photo

In this Jan. 11 2011 photo, Centenarian Vasiliki Lambidou, the woman beloved by fellow Greeks for raising the country’s flag every day for nearly half a century at the border with Turkey, poses for photographer at her home in the village of Marasia,

Ben Ali, who has been in Saudi Arabia since he was forced from power, was found guilty after just one day of deliberation of theft and of illegally possessing jewelry and large sums of cash. The same sentence was handed down to his wife Leila Trabelsi, a former hairdresser whose lavish lifestyle and clique of wealthy relatives were symbols of the corruption of the Ben Ali era for many Tunisians. Ben Ali and his wife flew to Saudi Arabia on January 14 after mass protests against his 23-year rule. The Tunisian government said in February it had asked Saudi Arabia to extradite Ben Ali. During his time in

office, members of his extended family accumulated fortunes while his security forces routinely arrested anyone who dared to dissent. Tunisia’s revolt electrified millions across the Arab world who suffer similarly from high unemployment, rising prices and repressive governments. Ben Ali’s case has been watched closely in Egypt, where former president Hosni Mubarak is due to stand trial over the killing of protesters. In a statement issued by his lawyers earlier on Monday, Ben Ali denied all the charges against him, saying that he was the victim of a political plot. He said he had been

tricked into leaving the country. “What a moment,” said Meriam, a student who was one of a handful of people waiting late into the evening outside the courthouse to hear the verdict. “After 23 years when he manipulated the courts, today a very fair court has returned to us a little bit of our honor.” “My brother was put in prison for nothing ... and the other one was forced to stay in Europe in exile for nine years,” she said. “This (verdict) gives us some peace.” STEALING

Judge Touhami Hafian, who read out the verdict and sentence in the Palace of Justice in the Tunisian capital, also ruled that Ben Ali and his wife would have to pay fines totaling 91 million Tunisian dinars ($65.6 million).

Build unified ASEAN in South China Sea: McCain Agence France Presse

WASHINGTON – Senator John McCain called for the United States to step up military and political support to Southeast Asian nations to stand up against China in growing disputes in the South China Sea. McCain, a senior member of the Republican Party, said the United States should help members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations to develop and deploy an early warning system and coastal vessels in contested waters. The former navy captain said the United States should also turn to diplomacy to help ASEAN nations sort out their own disputes and “es-

tablish a more unified front,” hailing a recent agreement between Malaysia and Brunei as an example. “China seeks to exploit the divisions among ASEAN members to play them off each other to press its own agenda,” McCain told a dinner at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, a Washington think-tank. McCain, a champion of an assertive military policy, welcomed President Barack Obama’s administration’s defense of freedom of navigation in the South China Sea but said it should go further. He said the United States should let “other countries know, where possible, which claims the United

States accepts, which ones we do not, and what actions we are prepared to support” — especially in defense of the Philippines, a treaty ally. Tensions have been rising in the potentially resource-rich South China Sea and East China Sea, where Beijing has myriad territorial disputes. In recent weeks, Vietnam has carried out live-fire naval drills and the Philippines announced plans to send its naval flagship in contested waters after incidents at sea. McCain said he welcomed a cooperative relationship with China and did not seek conflict, but laid the blame squarely at China’s “aggressive behavior” and “unsubstantiated territorial claims” for recent tensions.

News Local... From page 1 “If Bali does not offer a social culture there will be possibly no attraction for tourists to visit. On that account, we expect that government in accordance with its function as formulator of policy should be brave and decisive to determine the concept, vision and mission of Balinese cultural tourism,” he said. Maintaining the cultural concept in developing tourism, recognized Bagus Sudibya, would have an impact on cultural preservation, innovation, cultural creativity, intercultural harmony, employment and regionally generated revenue and foreign exchange. “Many important roles can be implemented by community in the development of cultural tourism,” he said. Nevertheless, endeavor to improve the cultural tourism involving the community encountered a number of obstacles in its application. For instance, local human resources did not know the vision

of tourism development clearly and the ability to manage an object professionally. “These factors make tourists tend to choose alternative destinations because their services and facilities are more comfortable than watching a cultural show,” he said. Deputy Chairman of ASITA Bali, Ketut Ardana, stated that Bali as a cultural tourism had to be strictly maintained by law enforcement in order the cultural tourism would not be eroded. “There must be clear rules regarding to licensing and the making of destinations so they will not turn unlawful,” said Ardana while adding there were allegations if tourism perpetrators only pursued fees and this was mostly done by illegal business. Meanwhile, nearly 80 percent of licensed tourism perpetrators put priority to sell cultural tourism. “On average, we are selling cultural tourism and destinations like zoo as a supplement only to avoid saturation effects,” he said. Iraqi security personnel gather at the site of a bomb attack in Mussayab, about 60 km (40 miles) south of Baghdad June 21, 2011. Five people were killed and nine others wounded when a bomb left in a restaurant went off in Mussayab, police said.

Bombs kill 21 at local Iraqi governor’s house Reuters

BAGHDAD – At least 21 people were killed on Tuesday when bombs exploded at a checkpoint outside a provincial governor’s house in central Iraq, the latest attack targeting a government building, local authorities said. One suicide bomber blew himself up and at least one car bomb exploded outside the Diwaniya governor’s house, 150 km (95 miles) south of Baghdad, as guards changed shifts at the checkpoint. Most of the victims were guards, officials said. “I heard a loud blast and then another one. I opened the door and I saw white smoke and smelled the blood... I looked to the side and I saw three guards dead on the ground,” said Maha al-Sagban, a local resident whose house was damaged. The initial toll was 21 killed at the checkpoint, said Fadhel Mawat, a spokesman for the provincial council. A source at a hospital in

Diwaniya said at least 22 people had been killed and more than 30 wounded in the attack. Another five people were killed and nine wounded in a separate attack when a bomb exploded in a restaurant in the town of Mussayab, about 60 km (40 miles) south of Baghdad, police said. Bombings and killings in Iraq have fallen sharply since the height of sectarian violence in 2006-2007, but a stubborn Sunni Islamist insurgency linked to al Qaeda, other Sunni groups and rival Shi’ite militias still carry out daily attacks. Violence has increasingly targeted security forces and provincial government officials as U.S. troops prepare to withdraw from the

OPEC oil producer by a year-end deadline more than eight years after the invasion to oust Saddam Hussein. Diwaniya is a poor, mainly Shi’ite region and several of Iraq’s armed groups are active in the area. A series of bombings and attacks have hit local government buildings in the last four months. Security officials have said they expect increased attacks on provincial offices. The Diwaniya attack followed a similar pattern to an attack on a checkpoint in Tikrit earlier this month when a suicide bomber detonated his explosives as army guards were handing over security duty to police.

Russia... From page 1 “We took a child to the local hospital — the child was in a very grave condition,” a medical worker told a local television crew at the scene. She said a total of five people were taken to hospital. A video made by a witness on her mobile phone, and filmed by the television crew, showed flames soaring from the wreckage into the night sky near where the plane crashed, in the region of Kareliya about 700 km (430 miles) north-west of Moscow. “Everything was on fire,” a witness who declined to give his name told the television crew. A photographer at the scene saw charred wreckage from the plane and dozens of emergency workers and firemen. The crash comes on the eve of the Paris Air Show which Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin is due to attend. Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, who has swapped his Tupolev for a French-made executive jet, in April criti-

cized flaws in domesticallybuilt planes and the nation’s poor safety record. One of the most high-profile Tupolev air disasters in recent times occurred in April 2010 when Polish President Lech Kaczynski’s official Tupolev Tu-154 plane crashed near Smolensk airport in western Russia, killing 96 people including Kaczynski, his wife and a large number of senior officials. The Tu-134 plane that crashed Monday was operated by the private company RusAir and was traveling from Moscow’s Domodedovo airport. RusAir, which specializes in charter flights, declined immediate comment. Most of the passengers were Russian but a Swedish national was also on the aircraft, Interfax news agency said. The Tuploev134 is a Soviet aircraft whose maiden flight was in 1967. It was unclear when the plane which crashed was made. The aircraft’s black boxes have been recovered.

He said the researchers from

South Korea were interested in researching tropical forest and the existence of forest for food availability. According to him, the tropical forest research would be conducted because such a forest has complete ecosystem and thus the Korean researchers were interested in cooperation with UGM to do the research. “The cooperation with Korean University will be conducted by using biotechnology, monitoring remote searching, and geographic information system for forest management and global climate change

Call to stop sending Indonesian workers to Saudi Arabia Antara

PADANG - Chairman of the Regional Representatives Assembly Irman Gusman asked here Monday the government to immediately stop the sending of Indonesian informal workers (TKIs) to Saudi Arabia, as a consequence of the execution by beheading of an Indonesian maid there last Saturday. He said such government attitude was necessary with a view to protecting Indonesian workers em-

ployed in Saudi Arabia. “The government needs to be firm by stopping the sending of Indonesian workers to Saudi Arabia,” he said. He added that the government needs to improve the recruitment, sending, placement, and protection of Indonesian workers. He said that the Indonesian workers to be sent abroad for employment need to be provided with adequate skills so that they would earn the respect of their employers.

With regard to the fact that many TKIs are involved with the law, Irman Gusman asked the government to give them real protection. He said to prevent TKIs from getting involved with the law, an effective resolution would be needed between the two countries and close cooperation in their placement. “The Indonesian government also needs to tighten legal regulations to preventing violence and providing legal assistance to problem TKIs,” he said.

Based on information collected by Antara here on Tuesday, permanent lawyer at Indonesian Embassy in Saudi Arabia could not have access in the judicial process of Ruyati binti Satuby, who was beheaded in Saudi Arabia on Saturday. Besides, legal process in the country has its own characteristic namely the special rights and public rights. Ruyati‘s legal process was related to the violation of special rights, in which clemency process for the violator of special rights should be obtained from the victim‘s family/heir. The government of Indonesia continues to make every effort to protect its migrant workers abroad, including ensuring the rights of the workers who face a threat of death penalty. But Saudi Arabia carried out the death penalty on Ruyati binti Satubi, an Indonesian female migrant worker

(TKI) on Saturday, June 18, 2011. Ruyati was found guilty of murdering Khairiya binti Hamid Mijid, her employer‘s wife, by hitting her in the head with a meat chopper and stabbing her in the neck. Soon after the news about the beheading of Ruyati in Saudi Arabia reached Indonesia, strong reactions from various parties flared up. Indonesian Foreign Affairs Ministry spokesman Michael Tene said the execution was done without observing international practices related to consular protection. He said the ministry was aware of the case and Ruyati had confessed to the murder but was not informed of the timing of the execution. Expressing his condolences over the death of Ruyati, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono expressed hope that the family and relatives of the victim would be given the strength to live without her.

Bali earned 2.14 million US dollars in foreign exchange from the export of 410,620 pairs of footwear in the four months of 2011.

Archaeological heritage in Bali Archaeological researches in Bali have found a number of archeological heritages, which belonged to prehistoric and historic remains. Prehistoric remains proved the earliest of the people’s life, started from hunting and food gathering through cultivation up to mastering the advanced technology. Such remains indicated the struggle and the achievement of the people’s life gradually, after adapting and exploring their environment its natural resources for their life, because the nature was still quite dangerous. On the other hands, the remains also demonstrated the relationship of the prehistoric Balinese people to those who lived in Java, Sumatera etc, even to the SouthEast Asian people. The most important of the prehistoric live in Bali is the invention of the metallic technology along with the megalithic tradition. During the advance technology the Balinese people have produced several kinds of bronze goods for ritual purpose such as kettledrums and for daily uses as well such as axes etc. Mastering the advance technology, Balinese people have succeeded to develop stone moulds in the village of Manuaba (Gianyar) for casting bronze kettledrum. The humanmask decoration, showed a remark-

able similarities to the decorations of the huge kettledrums found in the village of Pejeng not so far of the east of Manuaba, but the stone moulds of Manuaba are small in its size. It should be noted here that bronze kettledrums were not only found in Bali, but also in Java, and Eastern Indonesian Island. Another bronze moulds made of clay were also found in West Java, but not for producing kettledrums, but for making spearheads, axes, etc. Regarding the human-mask decorations, which were founds on the kettledrums of Pejeng, on the stone moulds of Manuaba and on the number of the sarcophagi found in Bali, was regarded as symbol of the leader’s or the ancestor’s spirits. The people believed that the spirit, who were abode on the top of the mountain or on the inaccessible place have the magic power for protecting the living society. When Hinduism has spread widely in Indonesia, the people believed to the sacred mountain as the place of the Hindu pantheons and the ancestor’s spirit as well. Based on this conception, then the people built their temples on the mountain area such as as Pura Besakih on the slope of Mount Agung. Along with the development of

the metallic industry, the megalithic tradition increased not only in Bali, but also in Sumatera, Flores etc. Several kinds of megalithic remains were found there namely menhirs, dolmens, menhirstatues, stepped pyramids etc. It is a matter of facts that the megalithic tradition have strongly influenced the people’s life and it is not surprising any more that living megalithic tradition could be found until to present day in Nias, Toraja, Bali and Eastern Indonesians Islands. In Bali, the megalithic remains, exe the sarcophagi are regarded as sacred monuments and functioned for worshipping thje Hindu Trinity, the local deities and the ancestor’s spirit (Sutaba 1984). Researches on the advanced technology and on the megalithic tradition in Bali in particular, have made conclusions that Balinese people have build their social organization headed by the leaders. The well organizations have made favorable conditions for mastering the advance technology. Then the social and cultural development became the solid foundation for facing the new era when Hinduism arrived in Bali (Sutaba, 1930). Bali have got Hindu-Budhis influences nearly at the 9 century A.D. as Proved by the finding of clay stuphikas and seals beared Budhis

formula, near the village of Pejeng, Gianyar. Then a pillar inscription was rediscovered in Blanjong Sanur (Badung) which mentioned the name of the king Kesari Warmadewa. This inscription was originated from c.10 century A.D. Since this period, Hinduism was spread widely in Bali and went deeply into the life of the Balinese people and then survived until today. Having well developed social organization and cultural life before the arrival of Hinduism, have led the Balinese people successfully modified the new elements in accordance with their characters and became the new one beared Balinese identity. The well-known king of Bali is a couple royal named king Udayana and his wife Gunapryadharmapati (c.10 century A.D), then succeeded by their families. During the ancient history of Bali, a number of temples were built nearly in the whole island. In these temple several kinds of historical remains were preserved e.g. statues, inscriptions etc. As the follower of Hinduism, Balinese people regard the temples including the remains in them as sacred monuments for worshiping the Hindu pantheons, the local deities and the ancestor’s spirit as well. This religious function was the re-

sponsibility of the Balinese people for keeping the monuments in well conditions and the welfare of the living society. Based on the evidence found in Bali there were thousand temples, which then named Bali as “The Island of Thousand Temples” or “The Island of Paradise”. Most of the old temples are located in the village between the two rivers called Pakerisan and Petanu namely the village of Bedulu, Pejengand Tampaksiring (Gianyar). It is remarkable that the temples found here originated from different period, e.g. Pura Goa Gajah, Yeh Pulu relief (Bedulu); Pura Kebo Edan, Pura Pusering Jagat, Pura Penataran Sasih, Pura Ukur-ukuran, rock cut temple Kelebutan (Pejeng); rock cut Gunung Kawi, Pura Megening, Pura Tirtha Empul, Pura Pegulingan etc (Tampaksiring). The densities of archaeological remains in Pejeng have led the archeologist to conclude that probably Pejeng wasthe capital of the ancient Balinese Kingdom. Beyond the regency of gianyar, there were also a number of important archeological remains e.g. Pura Tegeh Koripan, Pura Kehen (Bangli); Pura Besakih (Karangasem); the village temples. (IBP/Doc)

riod last year, the revenue from VOA was $11.9 million. Based on the report of financial statistics of Bali stated that the revenue gained from foreign tourists from Bali was quite high compare to the current international economics condition. The income gained from 482,670 foreign tourists who must pay VOA when they visited Bali. The current rule stated that not all foreigners who come to Bali must pay the fee. There three main entrances to Bali which are Padangbai, Tanjung Benoa, and Ngurah Rai International Airport. However, most of the foreign tourists were coming through the airport. The increasing number of tourists visited Bali could give positive effect on the economic development of the island which mainly depends on tourism. The high number of revenue from VOA was because the tourists stayed longer in Bali. If they stay more than a week, the VOA that they have to pay is also more expensive. The foreign tourists must pay $25 in average for the VOA. In March 2011, 155,300 foreign tourists pay the VOA among 207,907 foreigners visited Bali. Currently, the number of foreign tourists visited Bali is still stable even tough the article from Time Magazine once stated that Bali is the island of hell.

(Biji Salak) Ingredients * Rice Cakes 1 cup glutinous rice flour * ½ cup tapioca starch * ¾ cup water * ¼ tsp. salt Directions To make Rice Cake: Place rice flour and tapioca starch in a deep mixing bowl and make a well in the center. Add water and salt, mix well and knead dough until it can be rolled and shaped. Dough should not be to dry. Roll small rice cakes ½-inch in diameter. Cut diagonally 1-inch in length. Bring 8 cups of water to oil. Put it the rice cakes, bring back to a boil and simmer for 5 minutes. Drain and set the rice cakes aside. Ingredients * Sauce 3 cups water * 1 cup coconut milk * ½ cup palm sugar syrup * 1 pandan leaf * Pinch of salt Directions To make the sauce: Combine water, coconut milk, palm sugar, pandan leaf, and a pinch of salt in a small stockpot. Bring to a boil. Add rice cakes and simmer for 20 minutes. Cool and serve at room temperature, topped with a tablespoon of fresh grated coconut. Helpful hints: When preparing the rice cakes, use the amount of water given in the recipe only as a guideline; the quality of flour varies greatly and affects the amount of liquid it absorbs. Add sufficient water to result in a soft, smooth dough. If the rice cakes are dry when shaped, they will be very tough after cooking. (http:// asiarecipe.com)

The uniqueness of Trunyan Village IF you go to Bali, make sure to go to the village of Trunyan. This village is squeezed tightly between the lake and the outer crater rim of Batur, an almighty volcano in Kintamani. This is a Bali Aga village, inhabited by descendants of the original Balinese, the people who predate the arrival of the Hindu Majapahit kingdom in the 16th century. It is famous for the Pura Pancering Jagat temple, but unfortunately visitors are not allowed inside. There are also a couple of traditional Bali Aga-style dwellings, and a large banyan tree, which is said to be more than 1,100 years old. At Kuban sub-village close to Trunyan is a mysterious cemetery that is separated by the lake and accessible only by boat - there is no path along the steep walls of the crater rim. The village of Trunyan itself is situated at the edge of Batur Lake. This location is inaccessible except by boat, and it takes around half an hour across the calm waters. Getting to Lake Batur takes around two hours drive to the northeast of Denpasar along the main road to Buleleng and through Bangli Regency. Unlike the Balinese people, the people of Trunyan do not cremate or bury their dead, but

International Bali Post Classifieds Contact us

just lay them out in bamboo cages to decompose, although strangely there is no stench. A macabre collection of skulls and bones lies on the stone platform and the surrounding areas. The dead bodies don’t produce bad smells because of the perfumed scents from a huge Taru Menyan tree growing nearby. Taru means ‘tree’ and Menyan means ‘nice smell’. The name of Trunyan was also derived from these two words. The women from Trunyan are prohibited from going to the cemetery when a dead body is carried there. This follows the deeply rooted belief that if a woman comes to the cemetery while a corpse is being carried there, there will be a disaster in the village, for example a landslide or a volcanic eruption. Such events have been frequent in the village’s history, but whether women had anything to do with it is a matter of opinion... You can visit both the village of Trunyan and the Kuban cemetery by chartered boat from Kedisan. Sadly, nowadays the boat trips are now blatant tourist traps, as touts and guides strongly urge you to donate your cash to the temple project or leave a donation for the dead. These touts ruin an otherwise fascinating experience.

BUSINESS Toyota to hire up to 4,000 contract staff in Japan Agence France-Presse

TOKYO - Toyota on Tuesday said it planned to hire up to 4,000 contract workers in Japan as it looks to make up for lost production caused by the impact of the March 11 earthquake and tsunami. “In terms of domestic output, the company expects the production will start recovering from around October, making up the delay caused by the Great East Japan Earthquake,” a Toyota statement said. “In order to meet the situation, the company plans to hire 3,000 to 4,000 contract workers throughout the nation from mid-July.” In doing so, Toyota will end a two-year hiatus from such hiring, the Nikkei business daily said. They will be Toyota’s first new contract hires since the autumn of 2009. Amid uncertainty in the outlook on supply and sales fronts, Japanese automakers remain cautious about new full-time hires. But demand for

outsourcing and temporary labour is recovering. Earlier this month, Toyota said it expected net profit in this fiscal year to drop 31 percent on-year to $3.5 billion on a strong yen and the effect on production of the March disasters. The automaker said it expected to stage a recovery in the second half as supply problems caused by the earthquake fade, but warned the current strength of the Japanese currency made domestic production too expensive. The 9.0-magnitude earthquake and the resulting tsunami left 23,000 dead or missing, destroyed entire towns and crippled electricity-gen-

erating facilities, including a nuclear plant at the centre of an ongoing emergency. Amid power and parts shortages, Toyota and other Japanese firms announced production disruptions domestically and overseas because of the crisis, temporarily slowing output or shutting plants. Toyota has said production is expected to fully recover by November. It said the disaster — which contributed to a 77 percent net profit fall in the fourth quarter — will reduce its global production by 450,000 units, and result in a 360 billion yen hit to operating profit this year.

SINGAPORE - There is a “strong potential” that persistently high oil prices could derail the global economic recovery, the International Energy Agency (IEA) chief economist warned Tuesday. “My worry is that the current prices (are) a major risk for the global economic recovery and I’m very worried to see the same movie that we saw in the year 2008,” Fatih Birol said at a conference in Singapore. “I think if they stay so, there is a strong potential we see a risk that the high prices, the high oil prices can derail the economic recovery,” he said. Birol said the average price of oil this year is $110, much higher than the $90 seen in 2008 when crude hit a record above $147 before the onset of the global recession. The recession lasted well into 2009, and the global rebound has so far been slow especially for the United States and Europe, with Asia emerging stronger than the rest of the world. The latest surge in crude prices is being driven mostly by China’s energy-hungry economy and to lesser extent, India and the other emerging markets, Birol said. “All the growth comes outside of the OECD countries,” he said, refer-

Texas light sweet crude oil for August delivery was falling 39 cents to $93.01 a barrel. ring to the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) which groups the world’s developed nations. “If I can simplify, there are five countries who are driving the global energy demand, namely China, China, China, India and Middle East in that order,” said Birol, un-

derscoring the Asian giant’s importance as a major energy consumer. “They are responsible (for) more than 90 percent of the growth in global energy demand.” The IEA, based in Paris, is the energy policy arm of the 34-member OECD.

MUMBAI - India’s largest state-run oil explorer Oil and Natural Gas Corp plans to invest $7.7 billion in developing one of India’s biggest gas fields off the eastern coast, a company spokesman said Tuesday. ONGC is aiming to drill eight additional wells in a block in the KG basin and has sought approval from the regulator and the petroleum ministry, he said. The oil giant will also explore tie-ups with foreign partners, who have expertise to develop hard-to-exploit reserves in the basin, he added. “We will look for partners who have expertise in ultra deepwater drilling,” the spokesman said, asking not to be named. ONGC, which produces about 30 percent of India’s crude requirement, is involved in exploring for and exploiting hydrocarbons in 26 sedimentary basins of India. The KG basin is India’s most prolific gas basin, where some of the country’s largest natural gas discoveries have taken place in recent years. Oil and natural gas companies are raising spending on exploration and production, as demand and prices remain high. Earlier this year, British giant BP agreed to pay $7.2 billion for a 30percent stake in 23 oil and gas blocks owned by private energy giant Reliance Industries. India imports about 70 percent of its total fuel needs. He declined to say who ONGC was talking to but media reports last week said was holding discussions with the BG Group and Italian oil giant ENI with a plan to sell up to a 30-percent stake in two other gas blocks, off eastern India. “ENI and BG have evinced interest,” the Economic Times financial daily on Tuesday quoted an unnamed ONGC official, who added it was too early to say if deals would be signed with either firm. ONGC has bagged more than 50 percent of the 238 blocks awarded in bidding under India’s exploration licensing policy. ONGC produced 27.27 million tonnes of crude oil and 25.32 billion cubic metres of gas in the year to March 2011.

LOS ANGELES – The Marilyn Monroe dress that flirted revealingly with a gust of New York subway air in “The Seven Year Itch” fetched a record $4.6 million at an auction of film memorabilia. A more sedate outfit worn by Audrey Hepburn in the Ascot race scene of “My Fair Lady” drew a $3.7 million bid at the sale of nearly 600 Hollywood costumes and props collected by film star Debbie Reynolds. The buyers, who were not identified, also paid a sum to the auction house and other fees, according to auction publicity firm Nancy Seltzer & Associates. That brought the total price to more than $5.6 million for the Monroe costume and $4.5 million for the black-andwhite gown worn by Hepburn. The total was $22.8 million, according to auction house Profiles in History. “I’m thrilled beyond words. This first auction shows that our great stars were loved by the world,” Reynolds said. She plans to part with more with items later this year. In filmmaker Billy Wilder’s

“The Seven Year Itch,” Monroe’s character cooled off by standing over a subway grate to catch the breeze as a train sped underneath — which sent her dress north and exposed a shocking amount of leg and undergarment for a 1955 movie. The costume’s price set two records, according to Profiles in History: It surpassed the $1.26 million paid for the dress Monroe wore when she sang “Happy Birthday” to President John F. Kennedy, and it became the most expensive film costume sold. That honor had belonged to Hepburn’s black dress from “Breakfast at Tiffany’s,” which sold for $923,000, the auction house said. More modest but still impressive bids at Saturday’s auction in Beverly Hills and online included $540,000 for a Grace Kelly costume from “To Catch a Thief,” $140,000 for a gui-

tar used by Julie Andrews in “The Sound of Music” and $100,000 for a “Cleopatra” headdress that adorned Elizabeth Taylor. Reynolds, 79, started collecting four decades ago at auctions held by major film studios, including MGM and Fox, and eventually acquired 3,500-plus items. The auction meant the end of a dream for Reynolds, who starred as a teenager with Gene Kelly in “Singin’ in the Rain” and was an Oscar nominee for “The Unsinkable Molly Brown.” Reynolds’ combined casino-hotel and memorabilia museum in Las Vegas closed and she had planned to relocate the museum to Pigeon Forge, Tenn. Last year, Reynolds’ son, Todd Fisher, said the project had to file for bankruptcy protection and the collection would be sold to satisfy creditors. Reynolds, who still performs in nightclubs and theaters and remains the petite, pretty blonde who captured Kelly’s heart in their 1952 musical, expressed regret in an interview last week. But she looked on the bright side as well.

U.S musician Bob Dylan performs at the London Feis Festival, in Finsbury Park, Saturday, June 18, 2011, just weeks after his 70th birthday.

Legendary rocker Bob Dylan plays Tel Aviv Associated Press Writer

TEL AVIV, Israel – Legendary rocker Bob Dylan has played a much-awaited concert in Tel Aviv, reprising his famous hits but disappointing thousands of fans by not addressing them. The concert was Dylan’s third in Israel, following previous gigs in 1987 and 1993. Dylan, who is Jewish, enjoys a loyal following in Israel.

Among the hits he performed Monday were “Like a Rolling Stone,” “Tangled Up in Blue,” and “All Along the Watchtower.” Twenty-one-year-old Daniel Levy said she came to hear the Dylan classics. She called his music “more real, more authentic, more powerful than what we have today.” But Yosef Speizer, 28, said Dylan’s apparent detachment was bizarre. “The whole thing was strange,” he said.

NEW YORK – US comedy stunt television show “Jackass” lost one of its stars when Ryan Dunn, known for his death-defying and often car-related pranks, died in a car accident early Monday, MTV said. Police said the accident took place around 2:30 am (0630 GMT) in West Goshen Township, Pennsylvania, and that Dunn was probably speeding at the time. An unidentified passenger was also killed. Dunn’s 2007 Porsche 911 GT3 burst into flames after the crash. It was found off the road and in the woods. “Speed may have been a contributing factor to the accident,” the West Goshen Township Police Department’s report read. “Upon arrival, police located one vehicle off the road and in the woods that was fully engulfed in flames.” A photograph posted to Dunn’s Twitter account about two hours before the accident showed him drinking what appeared to be alcoholic beverages with two male friends. “We are devastated by the tragic loss of Ryan Dunn — a beloved member of the MTV family for more than a decade,” said Van Toffler, president of MTV Networks Music/Film Group that broadcast the “Jackass” series that ran from 2000-2002 before spin-

ning off into a successful film franchise. “He made us all laugh and had the tireless enthusiastic approach to life of your favorite middle school friend. Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with Ryan’s family and friends. The Jackass brotherhood will never be the same.” The red-bearded Dunn, 34, appeared in the “Jackass” television series and the franchise’s three films. He was also a cast member of reality television series “Viva La Bam,” in which most of the “Jackass” original cast

appeared. “Jackass 3D” debuted with a whopping $50 million in ticket sales in October. More recently, Dunn and “Jackass” co-star Steve-O teamed up for a June 8 episode of the NBC TV game show “Minute to Win It,” and hosted the shows “Homewrecker” (MTV) and “Proving Ground” (G4 television). One of his most famous stunts involved inserting a toy car in his rectum and then going to the doctor for an X-ray as part of his “Butt X-Ray” prank.

Ocean life on the brink of mass extinctions: study

This handout picture released by Riken on June 20, 2011 shows the “K computer” at Riken’s laboratory in Kobe, Hyogo prefecture, western Japan. Japan’s national institute Riken and Japanese computer giant Fujitsu announced their joint development of the K Computer to became the world’s fastest supercomputer. The K Computer, which has 672 racks with a total of 68,544 CPUs, has achieved 8.162 quadrillion calculations per second (petaflops).

TOKYO – A Japanese supercomputer has become the fastest in the world, making calculations more than three times faster than a Chinese rival, its developers said Monday. The c has achieved 8.162 quadrillion calculations per second, or 8.162 petaflops in computer jargon, according to developers Fujitsu Ltd. and the state-funded Institute of Physical and Chemical Research, known as RIKEN. In doing so K Computer overtook China’s Tianhe-1A of the National Supercomputing Centre in Tianjin, which became the world number-one in November and is capable of operating at 2.566 petaflops. The K Computer’s performance was recognised by the Top500 List of Supercomputers released on Monday at the 2011 International Supercomputing Conference in Hamburg, Germany, Fujitsu and RIKEN said in a state-

ment. It is the first Japanese supercomputer since 2004 to become the world’s fastest, a symbolic moment for a nation proud of its cutting edge technology. NEC’s Earth Simulator was the world’s fastest machine between June 2002 and November 2004. K Computer’s developers say the machine will be powerful enough to tackle complex calculations relating to climate research and disaster prevention.

“Use of the K computer is expected to have a groundbreaking impact in fields ranging from global climate research, meteorology, disaster prevention, and medicine, thereby contributing to the creation of a prosperous and secure society,” the statement added. K Computer is still being configured and has been assembled since October 2010 at a RIKEN’s facility in Kobe, western Japan, where it should be completed by June 2012, the statement said. It is made up of 672 computer cabinets currently equipped with of 68,544 computer processing units (CPUs), Fujitsu and RIKEN said in a press release. When finished, the machine will have more than 80,000 CPUs and be able to operate at 10 petaflops.

OSLO – Life in the oceans is at imminent risk of the worst spate of extinctions in millions of years due to threats such as climate change and over-fishing, a study showed on Tuesday. Time was running short to counter hazards such as a collapse of coral reefs or a spread of low-oxygen “dead zones,” according to the study led by the International Programme on the State of the Ocean (IPSO). “We now face losing marine species and entire marine ecosystems, such as coral reefs, within a single generation,” according to the study by 27 experts to be presented to the United Nations. “Unless action is taken now, the consequences of our activities are at a high risk of causing, through the combined effects of climate change, over-exploitation, pollution and habitat loss, the next globally significant extinction event in the ocean,” it said. Scientists list five mass extinctions over 600 million years — most recently when the dinosaurs vanished 65 million years ago, appar-

ently after an asteroid struck. Among others, the Permian period abruptly ended 250 million years ago. “The findings are shocking,” Alex Rogers, scientific director of IPSO, wrote of the conclusions from a 2011 workshop of ocean experts staged by IPSO and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) at Oxford University. Fish are the main source of protein for a fifth of the world’s population and the seas cycle oxygen and help absorb carbon dioxide, the main greenhouse gas from human activities. OXYGEN

Jelle Bijma, of the Alfred Wegener Institute, said the seas faced a “deadly trio” of threats of higher temperatures, acidification and lack of oxygen, known as anoxia, that had featured in several past mass extinctions. A build-up of carbon dioxide, blamed by the U.N. panel of climate scientists on human use of fossil fuels, is heating the planet. Absorbed into the oceans, it causes acidification, while run-off of fertilizers and pollution stokes anoxia.

Study: Portable Kiddie Pools Kill a Child Every Five Days COLORFUL kiddie pools look innocuous enough, but a new study finds that a child drowns in an inflatable, portable pool every five days in warm-weather months. “Because portable pools are generally small, inexpensive and easy to use, parents often do not think about the potential dangers these pools present,” said Dr. Gary Smith, senior author of the study and director of the Center for Injury Research and Policy at Nationwide Children’s Hospital, in a statement. Kiddie pools are typically sold in the yard aisle of big-box stores, next to sprinklers, water slides and kids’ flotation devices. Brightly colored or festooned with Disney characters, they seem like they wouldn’t be any more

dangerous than a typical child’s toy. But when the researchers of the new study, published in Pediatrics, looked at drowning and accident reports involving children 12 years and younger from 2001 to 2009, they found a total of 244 incidents in portable pools, including 209 drowning deaths and 35 near-drownings. (Would You Forget Your Baby in a Hot Car?) The vast majority - 94% - involved children younger than five, and 73% occurred in the children’s own yards. About 81% of the incidents happened during the summer. Pool safety comes up every summer (which officially begins June 21), of course, but many parents may not realize that the same risks that apply to permanent, in-ground structures

apply to portable above-ground pools as well. Some soft-sided, inflatable pools can reach depths of 4 ft. “It only takes a couple of minutes and a few inches of water for a child to drown. It is important for parents to realize that portable pools can be just as dangerous as in-ground pools,” said Smith. (Summer’s Hidden (and Obvious) Dangers.) The most effective method of prevention is adult supervision: the study found that children were being supervised in fewer than half - 43% - of all drowning and near-drowning incidents. In 18% of these cases, children were left momentarily unattended due to a parent’s brief distraction, like running to answer the phone or chatting with a neighbor.

Argentina beat Albania 4-0 in Copa warm-up Reuters

BUENOS AIRES - Lionel Messi laid on two goals and scored another as Argentina romped to a 4-0 win over Albania at the Monumental on Monday in their last warm-up for next month’s Copa America. Defender Javier Zanetti won an Argentine record 140th cap in the match, which his team controlled at will against mediocre opponents. Striker Ezequiel Lavezzi put the Copa hosts ahead in the fifth minute, sticking the ball over goalkeeper Arjan Beqaj from Messi’s perfect pass, before Messi made it 2-0 in the 43rd, taking the ball from Lavezzi’s lay off and striking a low left-footed shot inside the base of Beqaj’s post. “Lionel had a great match, generating scoring chances and scoring,” coach Sergio Batista said of Messi, who took his international tally to 17 in 57 matches. “The team played well. There are things that need adjusting because our

opponents did not attack much and did not see much of the ball, but I’m happy because we showed everything we’ve been practising,” he told reporters. SUBSTITUTE SCORERS

Argentina got their third in the 74th minute after Messi fed another sublime pass with the outside of his left foot to Sergio Aguero, who rounded the goalkeeper to slot home from a tight angle. “These kind of matches help us to get confidence and get to know each other better,” said Lavezzi. Aguero then laid on the last goal in the final minute for fellow substitute Carlos Tevez, who was recalled by Batista despite appearing out of

the Copa reckoning less than a month ago. Messi drew three defenders as he raced into the box, leaving Aguero to pass to Tevez to score with a low shot. Albania did not create a single clearcut chance, goalkeeper Sergio Romero going down just once to stop an early effort. “It was not as hard as it’s going to be in the Copa (America) but it’s useful to get our movements right,” Tevez told Argentine TV. The Copa America, which Argentina have not won since 1993, kicks off on July 1 when the hosts play Bolivia in La Plata in their Group A opener. The final is scheduled for the Monumental on July 24.

TOKYO – Japan captain Homare Sawa says her side are targeting at least a third place finish at the Women’s World Cup in Germany, to improve on the fourth they managed at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. “I feel the time has come,” the 32year-old, Japan’s most-capped female player, said on Tuesday before

the squad left for Germany after a training camp. “We want to produce a result that will be at least better than the last-four we reached in Beijing,” the attacking midfielder said. “A medal may be hard to come by. But we have no choice but to go for it. We will work hard and aim high.” Japan, nicknamed the Nadeshiko, a pink flower symbolising the grace and beauty of the ideal Japanese

woman, have played in all five previous Women’s World Cups, with their best result being a run to the quarter-finals in 1995. Sawa, the side’s leading scorer with 75 goals in 167 internationals, said she was determined to make her fifth World Cup her best. “I will be obsessed with our results. I want to continue running until I feel I have given it all,” said Sawa, the 2004 and 2008 Asian player of the year, who has also played at three Olympics since 1996. Sawa now plays for INAC Kobe after representing several Japanese and US clubs including Washington Freedom. Japan have high hopes of claiming Asia’s first Women’s World Cup. China lost to the hosts United States in the 1999 final as the only medallists from the region so far. China are not competing in Germany. Japan narrowly missed out on a medal at the Beijing Olympics but claimed their first Asian Games title last year. They reached fourth place in the latest FIFA rankings, the best ever by an Asian team, with only the United States and Germany — both two-time world champions — and the Samba Girls of Brazil rated higher. In Germany, Nadeshiko Japan face New Zealand on June 27, Mexico on July 1 and England on July 5 in Group B.

Fabregas ‘really wants’ move to Barca Agence France Presse

MADRID – Barcelona will refuse to pay 40 million euros (35 million pounds) for Arsenal skipper Cesc Fabregas although he “really wants” to transfer, according to Barcelona president Sandro Rosell. “I don’t know if we will sign Cesc or not. What I have no doubt of is that he really wants to come to Barca,” Rosell told Catalan television TV3 in an interview late Monday. Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola knows that every player has a value “and that Cesc is worth less than 40 million. We will offer less than 40 million and if Arsenal don’t accept it, Cesc won’t come,” Rosell said. “This year we won’t offer the same as last year because a year has gone by and Cesc today is not worth 40 million.” Gunners coach Arsene Wenger had insisted last month that he was determined to spend a second successive summer fighting off mighty Barcelona to keep Fabregas at the Emirates. But Spanish media say he has since decided not to fight the move. The Gunners turned down a bid from the Spanish champions last year for a player who spent his junior days at Barcelona before joining Arsenal at the age of 16 in 2003. “I am a Barca supporter. I am a member like my grandfather, my uncle, my cousin,” Fabregas said last year. “I love their colours since I was very small. I am Catalan. However, I am captain of Arsenal, I am a Gunner and it is there that I have become a player and that I have matured as a person.” Rosell, who took over as president from Joan Laporta in July 2010, also said “nothing was closed” regarding the transfer of Chilean international forward Alexis Sanchez from Italian side Udinese. Spanish sports media have said the 22-year-old, who is under contract with Udinese until June 2014, is close to joining the European champions. “We don’t have money for signings. When we arrived we saw that the club’s debt was much higher than what was being stated,” the Barcelona president added when asked about the possibility of signing either Sanchez or Italian striker Giuseppe Rossi from Villarreal. “Only one of the two will come,” he said said. Rosell said cost-cutting measures put in place since he became president “were necessary for the sustainability of the club”. Banning colour photocopies alone “saves us 300,000 euros”, he said. Shortly after Rosell’s arrival, Barcelona secured a 150 million euro bank loan to help pay player and staff wages.

Cavaliers host 3 players as NBA draft nears Associated Press Writer

CLEVELAND – The agent for Turkish center Enes Kanter doesn’t think the Cleveland Cavaliers have decided who they’ll take with the No. 1 overall pick in the NBA draft. On Monday, Kanter had his second private workout with the Cavaliers, who own the Nos. 1 and 4 overall picks in Thursday’s draft. Agent Max Ergul said the 6-foot-11 Kanter, who has raw skills but imposing, ready-for-the-pros size, met with Cavs owner Dan Gilbert. “Enes told me he liked it,” said Ergul, who believes the club is still weighing its options. “I have no prediction with what they are going to do and I think they are going to wait and take it down to the very last moment. And why should they announce it now? That would ruin the surprise.” The Cavs have been extremely guarded in their plans for this draft, which they hope can speed their rebuilding in the aftermath of LeBron James’ departure and a 63-loss season. Cleveland has been intentionally silent because the club wants to keep its options open and potentially raise the interest in a player to make a trade. In addition to its first-round picks, the Cavs have two selections in the second round (Nos. 32 and 54) and own a $14.5 million trade exception they got in a sign-and-trade with Miami last summer in the deal for James. Duke point guard Kyrie Irving has been Cleveland’s expected choice at No. 1, and the Cavs were the only team the 6-foot-4 player worked out for this spring. Irving played in only 11 games as a freshman for the Blue Devils because of a foot injury he says has healed completely. Also on Monday, the Cavs hosted Kentucky point guard Brandon Knight and Arizona forward Derrick Williams. Knight, who averaged 17.3 points and 4.2 assists last season, could be an option for the Cavs if they take Kanter or Williams instead of Irving at No. 1, but that seems unlikely. Kanter is somewhat of a mystery to most NBA fans. He hasn’t played basketball in nearly a year after being ruled ineligible at Kentucky. In the past few weeks he has worked out for several teams, showing off his solid post moves and a better-than-average perimeter game.

LONDON - Rafa Nadal made a dazzling start to his Wimbledon title defence with an easy win over American Michael Russell on Monday before home favourite Andy Murray produced some indoor fireworks to join the Spaniard in the second round. World number one Nadal, playing at the grasscourt slam for the first time as defending champion after injury denied him the honour in 2009, beat Russell 6-4 6-2 6-2 after taking a few games to get to grips with the 33-year-old journeyman. After heavy rain shut down play on the 17 courts not equipped with a roof, Murray made full use of Centre Court’s translucent sliding canopy to give British fans some cheer despite a scare against Spain’s Daniel Gimeno-Traver. World number four Murray, who beat Stanislas Wawrinka in the only other whole Wimbledon match to be played under the 80million pound roof in 2009, reeled off the last 15 games to win 4-6 63 6-0 6-0. Before the rain clouds rolled over south west London five-times women’s champion Venus Williams powered past Uzbekistan’s Akgul Amanmuradova 6-3 6-1 wearing her latest line in tennis fashion, a baggy ensemble with a large upside down V-shaped open-

ing slashed in the back. The 31year-old, who returned from a fivemonth injury lay-off at Eastbourne last week, struck the ball with her customary power to overwhelm the 97th-ranked Amanmuradova who is still looking for her first Wimbledon win after five attempts. “Especially having not played a lot, I had a little pressure on me to come out and swing as usual,” Williams, one of the oldest players in the women’s draw, told reporters. The American will have youth on her side in the second round, though, when she plays Japan’s Kimiko Date-Krumm who beat British wildcard Katie O’Brien 60 7-5. At 40 years and eight months, Date-Krumm became the second oldest player to win a singles match

at Wimbledon since Martina Navratilova survived a round in 2004 aged 47. Vera Zvonareva, the highestranked woman playing on opening day, survived a big scare when the second-seeded Russian beat American Alison Riske 6-0 3-6 63 and last year’s French Open champion Francesca Schiavone also needed a decider to see off Jelena Dokic in a match completed under the roof. Nadal, bidding to equal Bjorn Borg’s feat of winning the French Open and Wimbledon in the same year three times, fell 4-2 behind against the 33-year-old Russell before finding his range on his forehand and racing into the second round where he will face American Ryan Sweeting.

Pedrosa unlikely to be fit for Dutch MotoGP Reuters

MADRID - Dani Pedrosa is unlikely to have recovered from surgery on a fractured collarbone in time for the Dutch Grand Prix at Assen on June 25, his Repsol Honda team said on Monday. The 25-year-old Spaniard had a titanium plate inserted after a fall at the French Grand Prix at Le Mans last month and needed further surgery last week after a fragment of bone came loose. “Dani Pedrosa keeps improving every day but most probably he will not be able to take part in this next round,” Repsol Honda said in a statement. If Pedrosa were unable to race, Gresini Honda rider Hiroshi Aoyama would replace him, the team added. Pedrosa said he was feeling much better, the pain he felt before the operation had gone and he hoped to be back for the Italian Grand Prix at Mugello at the start of next month. “To be honest it will be very difficult for me to make it to Assen but I really believe I will be okay for Mugello,” he said. “So now I’m

focused on working to get better every day and see how far I get. “I want to return as soon as possible but I want to do the right thing.” Pedrosa missed his home race in Barcelona and the British Grand Prix and is fifth in the championship stand-

ings on 61 points after six races. Team mate Casey Stoner leads the standings on 116 points, with champion Jorge Lorenzo of Yamaha on 98 in second and Andrea Dovizioso, also of Repsol Honda, in third on 83.

Alonso reckons the Valencia circuit should offer his team the chance to fight for its first win of the season again. “I know that our fans are eagerly awaiting our first win of the season and I can assure you that the same goes for us,” Alonso wrote on Ferrari’s website. “At the last two races, we showed we were clearly capable of winning and, especially in Monaco, we came pretty close, although I believe that even in Canada I could have fought for it all the way to the end, given what we had seen in qualifying. “Now we go to a track with reasonably similar characteristics to

Montreal and there is no obvious reason why we should not be competitive here too.” The two-time champion is also hoping for a change of luck following a difficult start to the season. “I always believe that luck and bad luck balance out by the end of the season and maybe this unwritten rule also applies to race tracks,” he said. “If that’s the case, I would be more than happy if last year’s misfortune was paid back now! In fact, it seems that in general so far this season, luck has not come our way: in the race in Montreal, not one damned thing went right.”
