Loving me for me! Over the past 3 decades life has dealt me one heck of a hand. As a child my mother, brother, and I did a lot of moving around. I was Born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, yet raised in Sacramento, California. I also spent a few years of my life in Richmond, Indiana and Atlanta, Georgia as well. As a young girl I always had a dream of becoming someone very influential in the lives of my peers. I was full of insecurities because I was a chubby little girl and never really felt as though I fit in. This made me determined to find a way to help other young ladies who may have somewhat similar issues feel better about themselves. Although I hadn’t completely dealt with my own problems I knew helping others would help me overcome.

Loving Me For Me

Throughout my life I have had to deal with familial issues concerning drug abuse, sexual abuse, and loved ones being physically abused. Living a life such as this could ruin a person’s potential. Thank God I allowed all of my experiences to mold and transform me into a strong, powerful and anointed woman of God! I am a divorced mother of three beautiful children. During my marriage I had some pretty rough times. Before I got married life was good, but during the marriage everything seemed to go wrong. Being unequally yoked spiritually can kill every dream a person may have about having a fairytale life. I lost A LOT during that relationship, my home, car, self, relationship with Christ, money…At this time I must say my ex-husband and I have a wonderful parenting relationship and are great friends. I couldn’t have asked for a better set of children to love nurture and care for.

Even with those personal struggles, I, “Lady Love” a licensed cosmetologist and previous salon owner, have been playing in hair since I was 7 years old. I actually began making money when I was 15 years old. I didn’t obtain my certification until 2006 at 26 years old from Kaye’s Hair Fashion in Indianapolis. From that point there has been no stopping me!! After graduating I worked at About Face Beauty Salon on the west side of Indianapolis. From there I went on to partnership with my husband and a mutual friend. That venture didn’t quite fare as well as hoped, so I went back to About Face only to leave again and move to Malik’s Barber and Beauty Salon on the far east side of Indianapolis. Shortly after working at Maliks as a stylist I obtained ownership of the salon and went into another partnership to open Hello Beautiful Salon Professionals. After 2 years my partner and I went our separate ways and I became sole owner of what I called Viki Vitrel Salon. Viki Vitrel lasted for a year and the time came for me to move on to the next mission. Presently, I am working at 2 local salons, Miracles Barber and Beauty Center on Shadeland Avenue and Supreme Clientele Barbershop on W 34th Street in Indianapolis. I was just recently featured in Detroit’s own Prestige Hair Magazine and brought home the 2nd place trophy in the Creative Platform Hair Competition in the fall. I have enjoyed being the stylist on set for major and minor local photo shoots and fashion shows. It’s in your mouth!

How you speak during troubled times could be the difference in coming out or staying in it. Our words are critical to our success. It actually tells us what’s in our heart. The Bible says, “Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.” (Matthew 12:34) What’s in your heart? Have you allowed this world’s system to make you lose confidence in yourself and others? What we say gives us away. Positive faith talk reaps a reward of positive results. Negative talk results in an attitude of defeat. When we feel we are defeated it exudes fear. The fear of failure and lack of self-worth are manifested in our speech. Guess what? We spread our heart issue to our family and friends. Author Pastor Patsy Martin, Spiritual Director Misery loves company. Enough is enough! It’s time for a change! Don’t lose hope. “Keep hope alive!” That slogan says more than we realize. Hang with positive people who don’t magnify every issue or problem. The negative people will spread their poison and cause you to lose heart. Infuse your heart with peace and joy. Look for it. It’s time to look not at the things that are seen because they are temporal and subject to change. A true source of strength is God. Learning to say what He says in the Bible builds a wall of defense against depression, defeat, and fear. What a fairy tale, you may say. You just don’t know what I’m dealing with. My man is treating me bad. My children are acting like heathens. My supervisor is on my back! It seems everyone is pulling me. On top of that, I haven’t been feeling well. What can I say positive about that? It is what it is! It’s my reality. See, that’s the problem. Many times we focus on everything that’s wrong in our lives. Your words and thoughts will frame your world. Begin to speak and think positive. What should your speech sound like? If your man is treating you bad…then say, “I am valuable and my worth is not defined by how he treats me. I am better than my current situation. I will not allow myself to be talked to or treated any way”. My Sista, a man will give you what you allow. Say what the Bible says, “I am fearfully and wonderfully made”. Things can get better. We don’t always have to have the last word! Let him talk. Listen without thinking about a “smart comeback”. Because we are so great at arguing, we say things that put a wedge between us; which results in hurt feelings and verbal attacks. Proverbs 15:1 states, “A soft answer turneth away wrath, but grievous words stir up anger”. Not all the time, but a lot of the time, we need to be quiet and pray before talking to that man. Get your heart issue right and your speech will change. You will be valued because you value yourself and others. You can live divinely. It’s time to speak life. Proverbs 18:21 “The tongue can bring death or life; those who love to talk will reap the consequences.” It’s in your mouth!

Stepping In Excellence

All right, now that you have your New Year’s Evolution down and have created your realistic and achievable list, it’s time to Step in the name of Excellence. First and foremost you need to learn how to LIVE and not just EXIST. Too many times we start off the New Year with all these expectations and we forget how to “LIVE” life. Living life consists of us “choosing” to be happy despite our circumstances. Now, the question is how do we choose to be happy? You have to undoubtedly know who you are and whose you are. Never change your identity or compromise your character to satisfy anyone. Stay true to yourself and hold on to what you know is right. Your INTEGRITY will speak for itself. Of course, you’ll have critics, and you’ll be surrounded by jealousy, but never take it personal. Someone once told me, people will criticize you for doing good, but Do Good Anyway. Know you are a champion, and not a loser. Losers focus on what they are “GOING THROUGH”; Champions focus on what they are “GOING TO.” Know God has a great plan and a great destiny for your life. Know with God, all things are possible!! To get to the next level there will be some changes that NEED to take place because not everyone can go where you are going. Re-evaluating some of the relationships you have is a must. There’s a saying, tell me who your friends are, and I will tell you who you are. If you run with eagles, you will learn how to soar to great heights. “A mirror reflects a man’s image, but what he is really like is shown by the kind of friends he chooses.” A true fact of life is that you become like those with whom you closely associate for the better and the worse. The less you associate with certain people, the more your life will improve. Anytime you tolerate mediocrity in others, it increases your mediocrity. An important attribute in successful people is their impatience with negative thinking and negative acting people. As you grow, your associates will change. Some of your friends will not want you to go on ahead. They will want you to stay where they are. Friends that don’t help you climb will want you to crawl. Your friends will stretch your vision or choke your dream, and those that don’t increase you will eventually decrease you. Consider this: • Never receive counsel from unproductive people Never discuss your problems with someone incapable of contributing to the solution, because those who never succeed themselves are always first to tell you how. Not everyone has a right to speak into your life. You are certain to get the worst of the bargain when you exchange ideas with the wrong person. Don’t follow anyone who’s not going anywhere. With some people you spend an evening, with others you invest. Last but not least, don’t beat yourself up. Obsessing over occasional slipups won’t help you achieve your goals. Do the very best that you can and take it day by day. George Woodberry wrote, “Defeat is not the worst of failures. Not to have tried is the true failure.” A successful man is one who can lay a firm foundation with the bricks thrown at him. So, reward yourself and begin to celebrate your success. When you complete one thing on your list, reward yourself by doing something nice for YOU. This ladder of excellence is infinite so keep on climbing and don’t look back. This is your time to becoming a better you!

Becoming a hair stylist was not something I would say I set out to become. It was a gift and talent that God breathed upon me. Even as a youngster doing hair I never really intended on it being my career until I realized I could capitalize off of a natural gift. It wasn’t until after I attempted college 3 times, worked for the USDA/NRCS office for 3 years, and then had my son I realized where my blessings lay. Immediately after cosmetology school I became a foster parent for a short time. As a teenager I had a nice hand in the music industry and the opportunity to perform at venues with artists such as Outkast, Jermaine Dupri, Toni Braxton, and Dallas Austin to name a few. At that time becoming a recording artist was my mission and goal. Needless to say that dream didn’t quite manifest , however, we never know what the future holds. Being a stylist has its many ups and downs. In dealing with so many different people and personalities being a hairstylist and artist can become a little stressful and when that happens I like to relax at home in peace and quiet with a nice glass of wine. Sometimes I may need to take an excursion or just turn off all communication objects so I can get back to me! What keeps me going is knowing the impact I am able to make on women’s lives. The inspiration I am able to bring to women truly keeps me moving forward in my career. I like I say “Born to Create, Anointed to Inspire”. I often meet people and find something about them I may admire. My spiritual mentors are Minister Beverly Hagler, Pastor Corey Duncan, and Dr. James Anthony Jackson all of New Beginnings Fellowship Church. These three people have heavily influenced my spiritual walk with Christ and my personal life. This journey of life has taught me a lot of lessons and how to love myself so much more! I continue to grow and aspire to brand my name nationally and internationally, remain on the developing spectrum of becoming a professional photographer, and to eventually establish an Artist Development Center. I want to show others how to use their creative abilities and embrace them as I did. I aspire to help others creatively as it helped me to push through many struggles and learn how to love me for me! Loving me eternally! Young & Gifted For the Young Adults…. How to Love, Let Go and Improve! Author: Tiffany Lockridge

Love is defined as the giving of one’s time to something. Although most believe they know and understand it, at times the understanding comes with how to retain it. Mankind has a need and a want to be “loved”. We were created to be loved; however, over time you wil learn it’s easier to give love than to receive it. Life can show us many different ways to receive. Some reasons can be upbringing, environment, and livelihood. Women are nurturers by nature, so by design we ultimately give love quicker than others. Because we are created this way, often love is taken for granted or we fall into the trap of relationships that are toxic. When that happens, our mindset becomes tainted or damaged. Because of this we don’t know how to give or receive love and ultimately we “sabotage ourselves to help ourselves”. Being a creature of habit, we don’t allow change, forgiveness, and understanding to enter into our mindset. So with the New Year, begin to follow these seven basic steps to learn Gods intent for love. This is key in being able to understand how to give and receive it properly: I 1.

Let go of past baggage: When entering a new relationship, whether its friendship, work or personal, make sure not to compare old with the new. 2. Close that chapter: Make sure you are over and have forgiven any past hurts from an old relationship. 3. Quit talking about the past: Once that part of your life is gone, so are the conversations regarding it. “Death and life is in the power of the tongue, and those who love it wil eat from it” Proverbs 18:21. Understand that continuing to speak on pain and hurt prevents healing and progression to happen. 4. Let go of the shame: Many times we chose to accept things in our lives that we knew were not good for us. The outcome may cause us to have a shameful outcome. Know that our choices are our lessons and we learn and move forward from them. 5. Enjoy today: Life is too short to not enjoy the fruits of your labor. We were never promised we were going to have a life that is trouble free, but we should enjoy our days being thankful and grateful for the things we are blessed to have. 6. Walk by faith and not by sight: Begin to meditate in God’s Word. Faith comes from the hearing the Word of God. Know that God loves you and wants you to be blessed. 7. Believe and understand the power of forgiveness: Forgiveness ultimately helps to release you from bondage and allows true happiness into your heart.

From the Minds of our Youth

Hello… my name is beauty

Author: Bryana Mills, 16

I am not a product, of yesterday’s pain I have the ability to dry myself off, after the rain I will to be the best and count every loss as a gain This is a major part of my beauty. My mother says, I’ve always been pretty, yes, a cutie But who is willing to talk about what is true beauty It’s not the lust that man feels when he looks at you but I’m speaking on real beauty My beauty is my imperfection and my ability to just be me I used to look at the mirror and say, I hate what I see I would smile and grin but within I was broken Now, those memories are nothing more than a token Reminding me to never turn back again So to that man, I told him take me as I am If you find beauty in my body and not my heart I do understand But following that, I told him never to abuse a woman’s worth, That many times I’ve been misused and hurt. But no longer am I the same, though it took all that pain for me to make a change I learned to love myself in sickness and in health Flaws, no one can escape them, but nobody wants to admit that’s what truly shapes them Everybody wants exceptions but first you should accept yourself Love yourself because everybody else may not, so don’t forget where real beauty lies And remember it’s more than what meets the eyes. If you can’t seem to find, Look Inside……Hello... my name is Beauty!

The Beauty Bar Author: Brittany Stewart, Cosmetologist

Beauty can be a very confusing thing especially with the standards of today’s society. Whose standard of beauty are you trying to live up to? True beauty consists of some MAJOR COMPONENTS *KNOWLEDGE OF SELF WORTH *CONFIDENCE *SELF LOVE *STRONG SPIRITUALITY These are so important in true beauty. I know you may feel this article should be discussing certain hairstyles that flatter certain facial shapes, or even which foundation would make your face as flawless as the models in the magazines. Those products are NOT what make a woman beautiful. We as women are works of art can I get a “HELLO”. That’s power and beauty all by itself. Let’s start with self- worth. Knowing your self- worth is so important we had to discuss it first. Increase your self worth! Increase the things about yourself which add value. How do you really feel about yourself when you look in the mirror? What type of woman are you? These are great questions when evaluating your self worth. You are a brand add to “your brand.” Knowing your self worth will give you confidence to walk with your head held high with a beauty that no amount of money can buy. You could say confidence is that “jen ne sais quoi.” Self love is equally as important because if you can’t and don’t love yourself how can you love anyone or anything. False love is the worst. Beauty and love go hand and hand. Looking in the mirror and loving the woman that looks back at you is a wonderful feeling. Self love isn’t getting your hair done or your nails done. Those things have been misconstrued and in reality are simply pampering, which is essential to do for yourself and yes it makes you feel better, but it is the inner self love that is most important. Love yourself by feeding yourself positive affirmations daily so you can exude beauty outwardly as well as internally and with all your mind body and soul you will feel beautiful.

B.Y.O.B Queen Be Your Own Beauty Queen Having a spiritual relationship will keep you grounded. The beauty in this comes when everything is against you and you feel defeated it won’t drain your life. Praying, quiet time, and having that one on one relationship with God supplies you the energies needed to keep going when you feel like giving up. These combined steps are what make us beautiful and it’s a beauty that won’t fade as long as we keep knowing our self worth, possessing dynamic amounts of confidence, having that never ending love for oneself, and last but not least always have a spiritual outlet. Beauty is something we all possess. We have to tap in and start loving ourselves for the BEAUTIFUL WOMEN WE ARE. Look yourself in the mirror and tell that beautiful woman that looks back at you “you are beautiful” and “you are amazing.” Every morning do this. Don’t miss a moment to add to your self worth become the woman you want to be. Be your own beauty queen.

This year we want our readers to feel great about themselves and embrace their body image. Take that 30th birthday and buy those new heels you feel great in or let your curly hair down for a night on the town with the girls.

Embrace Your Age

Mk Girls love to see women of all ages living life to the fullest. The first step to loving you for you, is embracing the age and stage you are in your life. Whether you are 21, 30, or 40 you can further your education, make new friends, or even start a family. It’s never too late to live a happy fulfilled life.

Embrace Your Silhouette Every woman has a different body type and that is exactly what makes us unique and one of a kind. Start by determining your body type or find a professional consultant to show you how to compliment your body style. Once you have discovered this, the more appropriately you can highlight and enhance your features. Visit your local seamstress and ask to have your measurements taken so you can properly fit clothes to your silhouette. Tailoring your garments is the best way to make sure your look is perfect for you.

Embrace Your Height To all of you 5’8 statuesque and taller women out there, embrace and show off your model height. Women everywhere are envious of those long legs. Treat yourself to a pair of BCBG Maxazria Heels that will make your girlfriends jealous. For those of you who are that heel ready height of 5’4 and shorter embrace your wedges this spring break and pair them with the perfect dress for your night. Another way to make those legs look even longer is by first looking at your hem line. Your hemline can either make you look stubby or elongate your body. This would be another question for your seamstress or consultant to help you determine. Everyone’s shape is different, but, with a little help and by simply taking the skirt or dresses length into consideration, you may find yourself pulling out that piece you thought would never work for you. These are only some of the ways ladies out there can take these next couple of months and embrace yourself for you. Don’t be afraid to explore new options, try new styles or get back into your skinny jeans. MK girls are here for your every style need. Fashionably yours, The MK Girls

At Home Author: LoveVelya Miller

SPRING CLEANING When I think of home, I think of a place, where there is Peace, Warmth and Love. A place of Rest for my family, and an inviting space for entertaining. A place of refuge when the worlds stress has brought me to my knees, my sanctuary. Each one of us has a “One Of a Kind” sense of what we feel home should be. Whether you are a fan of the fast lane New York Style or you enjoy the comforts of the Country fields, here in our At Home department we want to introduce you to new ideas, techniques, color schemes, decorative pieces and furniture to help you redesign or accent your very own At Home environment! With the spring approaching we all know that its time for the Infamous… SPRING CLEANING! Its time to throw out all of those bell bottom, boot cut, Brady bunch, baggy pants, that you got for a buck at a blue light sell at Big Lots!!! Let them go... I’m sure the retro kids at the Broad Ripple consignment stores would be happy to add those to their throw back wardrobe. Not only do we need to get rid of some of the old wore out clothes, its time to free yourself from some of that clutter in your office around your desk. Maybe consider taking the clothes off of the treadmill and use it this year. How ever you need to do it, just do it right and do it fast. Your home represents you. Mothers with small children, I must tell you that I honestly can relate to and completely understand your struggle when it comes to keeping up after small children. Is like they take over our homes!! Really, they do, but we know who the boss really is Right!? Lets start by making sure the kids are provided with enough storage space for their toys, books and small items. Getting the kids in gear to clean up behind themselves truly relieves a ton of burdens off of poor little mommy. Also, make sure the kiddos understand mommy has her space and they have theirs, we can all get along if we respect one another’s space. When it comes to your space mom, make sure you put little Johnny’s baseball equipment where it belongs and that is not next to your bedroom door! Once you’ve cleaned house begin your journey to creating a sanctuary for your soul. Your bedroom is your OWN private domain and should represent your very own personal style and passion for the beauty of rest. Get yourself some coordinating sheet and bedding sets. Make your husband feels like there is an experience going on every night even if it is only a dream. Lots of throw pillows are always a nice accent to the bedding arrangement. Maybe try some art for your walls if you, like many others are looking at bare panels of white walls. Sometimes adding a little color can make a dramatic difference in a rooms appearance without putting a major dent in the pocketbook. Inviting fragrance will always spice up or even mellow out the atmosphere in your sanctuary. Most of all get clean up, get organized and create the home that you desire and deserve. There is nothing worse then dreading the fact that you have to go home after you get off work because its not comfortable or cannot find peace. Take this time over the next few months to invest in your peace. Take pride in the gift of having of calling your address… HOME!!! 19

Lower Your Debt: Love Yourself and Your Pocketbook

Author Lisa Gilliard, M.B.A., M.A.

Ladies, do you find yourself saying: “I would love to do X, but my _______ (i.e. child, family, career) is first priority.” If you answered yes, then you are one of many women who fall victim to a whirlwind of responsibilities that limits time for “self.” So, the new year rolls around and brings with it a number of changes and proposed resolutions. Women, especially those who are mothers, tend to take on a new attitude in which they profess a need to become less selfless and begin to love themselves once again. We state aloud we will purchase a new wardrobe, join an aerobics club, or buy that dream vehicle we always wanted. Such spontaneity indicates our inability to restrain our anxieties in which we feel kept us from achieving, purchasing, or learning X, Y, or Z. In order to effectively love ourselves, we must love our pocketbooks. In order to do this, we will not create an immediate need to provide what we feel is lacking. We must become more sensible and organized to achieve our desires. We will begin by developing an organizational chart which will outline how we currently spend our money (i.e., mortgage, car, utilities). Once the chart is created and indicates the current debt level, we can then devise a plan on how to lower our overall debt and create what I call an income cushion— the relative amount between what debt is owed and your monthly gross income. Thus, the chart will indicate your debt to income ratio (DTI), the percentage of your monthly gross income that goes toward paying debts, and your income cushion. Creditors and lenders look at your debt to income ratio to determine your ability to repay loans. Most often, up to 33% or 1/3rd of your income can be taken up by debt. If you manage to keep the debt to income ratio low, your credit score will rise. Take for instance a department store credit card (i.e., Macy’s, Nordstroms) with a $3000.00 limit. When making store purchases with that card you should give yourself a spending limit of no more than $990.00. By doing this, you are leaving 2/3 of the credit card free and showing potential lenders although you have a credit card with a higher limit you have control over what you spend. When you receive your statement in the mail make every attempt to send more than the minimum payment amount due. This will eliminate some of the interest due on the payment as well as limit the number of overall payments due on the account. By becoming more organized you are one step further in learning how to love yourself and your pocketbook. 23

Get Fit and Make Changes

In our culture, weight and size are considered indicators of how healthy you are. Sometimes people don’t realize what they say can be very hurtful, even if done out of concern. Some examples of those comments are “so you gained a few pounds I see.” “Are you pregnant?” “Is all that food for you?” Anytime people mention body changes everyone automatically thinks of being overweight. Being overweight is more than just eating too much. Usually there is a reason for someone to use overeating as an escape. There are times when a temporary increase in weight is due to water retention during your monthly menstrual cycle. Occasionally, when you consume too many salty snacks your body tends to be out of sorts and holds on to most of the fluids you drink. This could potentially cause swollen ankles, legs, arms, hands, and possibly the face. Sometimes your hormones begin to fluctuate causing unusual food cravings like chocolate. A small portion of chocolate can be satisfying, but eating a five pound box is unhealthy and overindulgent. Food cravings can lead to overeating. When your body has a need for a certain mineral you eat more of everything until you find the missing ingredient and the craving goes away. Being pregnant can also cause a temporary increase in weight. Your obstetrician will let you know how much extra weight is safe for you to gain during this time. The old saying about eating for two is not really necessary. When eating a meal, don’t consume more than enough food to satisfy your hunger. If you gain too much extra weight, it will be a great deal more difficult to lose after the baby is born.

Fit Alternatives Hydrate and Cleanse! Drink water with your meals. Soda can pack up to 425 calories and loads of sugar. Try adding lemon to your water or unsweetened tea. Undress Your Food! Be conscious of salad dressing, spreads, cheeses, and sauces that pack a lot of calories. Try low fat dressings or olive oil and vinegar as an alternative. Dine In About 57% of fast food meals exceed the recommended 1500 mg of daily sodium intake. Try cooking a lighter meal at home or ordering items you know are healthier than the quarter pound burger!

24

Stress is another reason some people overeat. When you have a bad day, children don’t seem to stop, nosey neighbors, and so many other triggers can cause headaches, backaches, and nervousness. It would help to find a way to relieve that stress. Go for a walk, this is a very popular tension reliever. While you walk you breathe deeper, focus on the stress trigger, and get a chance to calm down without food. Maybe you can talk the problem out with a friend or person not directly involved. A listening ear or shoulder to cry on works better than a large slice of cake. Exercise and talking will help you clear your thoughts. Find a way to take your mind to a more pleasant place other than the kitchen. To lose weight you will have to change your food and lifestyle. Before you do you need to change your way of thinking about things you eat. Our bodies take care of us in so many ways each day. We need to start taking care of our bodies by eating a variety of fruits and vegetables each day. These are some of the easiest foods to be digested. Apples, nuts, and grains are some of the most natural fiber enriched foods for us to enjoy. Watermelon, cantaloupe, pears, and oranges are naturally sweet and juicy. Drink 6-8 glasses of water everyday. Your kidneys will appreciate the effort. Reduce the amount of salt used on your foods. Start slow and do the best you can because you don’t have to please anyone in particular. When you begin losing weight, do it slowly. If you plan to keep it off, love yourself enough to do it right. Baby steps are small and shaky at first but they soon become strong and sure. Try to walk at least 10,000 steps a day. You can buy a pedometer to help count your steps. Eat more fresh fruits and vegetables to help your digestion, add fiber to your diet, and they really do taste great. Don’t forget about drinking that water. It will flush your kidneys and remove toxins from your body as well. This is the time of year when you let someone special know that you care. Prove it in a fabulous way—PLEASE care for yourself.

Classy & Fabulous Let’s Step it up!

Author: Joi McCreary

Ladies, we are working on our class and claiming our fabulousness! It is time to step it up and challenge ourselves to do something different! It’s time to tackle that one thing we always wanted to change. We have settled into the New Year, we have set goals and made lists! Many of us are claiming this year as our year! So, if you really want to make that happen and want something different let’s start NOW! Let’s do something you would not ordinarily do, but there are some things which should be done first! You need to get over the notion of our year and make it your time. Make it your time to elevate to the next level or improve areas in your life. Acknowledge and select an area you want to grow. If you aren’t sure of where to start we can help! Let’s focus on what is most common. Those would be your image, career, finances, and social life! Improve your image With image there are things that come up such as self confidence, first impressions, weight and health status, as well as fashion sense. Some of us are stronger in one area than the other and that is okay. We all are a work in progress. Self confidence is essential, so be proud of who you are! Walk with your shoulders back and head held high. Make your presence known! While doing this you will want to make a great impression so impressions and fashion sense go hand in hand! Get with your honest girlfriend who has no problem telling you what compliments you and what doesn’t, but be sure she has an eye for fashion and style. Another option is to find a professional, which is sometimes the best option because they are neutral to the situation. Next, go through that closet. Pick out what works and what you need to donate! Once you have your wardrobe tailored to what you want to reflect, it’s time to focus on personal health. Being healthy is key to the everyday operations of life! When you feel good your day is much more productive and when it has reached a close you have accomplished an abundance of things! Improve Your Career and Finances Some of us are unhappy with what we do day to day so we want a change! Work on your purpose and passions. Write them down, pla,n and research so you know what is needed to make your dream a reality! This does not mean you have to be an entrepreneur; it could simply be a career change. Either way you need to prepare. If you are serious, take 30 minutes each day to do something to help you attain that goal. Meet with someone in that field, research the trends of that industry, make a business plan or career goal plan. You can never be too prepared! Oprah once said “I feel that luck is preparation meeting opportunity.” That is vital to success! Financial improvements are always welcome in everyone’s life! We all know when we are financially stable we feel less stressed, less tense, and honestly happier because we can provide for ourselves and family! Start and stick to that budget you worked so hard preparing. Make better spending decisions, eat out less, and yet budget to treat yourself. You did work hard you do deserve to allow yourself disposable income. Gain a better understanding of where your money is going for the next 30 days. I challenge you to write down everything you spend money on! You are going to be amazed at what you see! Then adjust according to your lifestyle and needs! We’ve improved our image, worked on our finances, and now it’s time to treat ourselves with disposable income and show off our new image and start that social life! Socialite Status What do you enjoy to do? Is it listening to live jazz, a night on the town with the girls, a quiet dinner, or on the liveliest scenes? Well, you can do it! Within reason of course! Look online and search for your city’s nearest happenings. There is a lot to do, even in the quietest cities! Wine tastings, pottery classes, horseback riding are just some of your options! Some of use the excuse we don’t have anyone to hang out with, so I suggest you start your own social club with your rules! Host your own girl’s night out or in! A good spa day is always a way to enjoy good company! Well ladies you have a few things to accomplish! So I challenge you to work on your image, plan and research that dream, do your 30 day challenge, and submit your results and opinions, then after all the hard work enjoy that social scene and relax!

Born in New York, New York and now residing in Indianapolis, Indiana, meet Danisha C. Greene, Fashion Stylist and Writer. Ms. Greene loves to travel and read poetry. She especially enjoys anytime she can sit and watch the sky and clouds move on a beautiful day while listening to sultry neo soul or smooth R&B music and be at peace. She thinks, she wonders, she imagines, and explores the possibilities of life. Ms. Danisha C. Greene of Yours In Fashion is an up and coming entrepreneur who is making her way to the top. Styling photo shoots, creatively leading teams to the top styling techniques, casting and directing, Danisha is no stranger to the fashion and entertainment scene. With a B.A. in Mass Communications in Radio and Television and a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. she has achieved many goals and she embraces her outgoing spirit and showcases it in her work! Danisha contributes that spirit to her heroine, Claudine J. Jones! Ms. Greene states, “She’s my hero for more reasons than one. Most of all she’s the most selfless and loving person I know. She’ll sacrifice and has sacrificed so much for myself and my siblings. She raised me and continues to care for my youngest siblings at the age of 74. She’s wise and caring and she’s my best friend who loves me despite of my short comings. She’s an inspiration to all because she’s so encouraging and genuine. Everyone that meets her loves her instantly and feels her kind spirit. I aspire to be just a 1/8 of the PHENOMINAL woman that she is.” Danisha was fortunate to have such an amazing influence. Her younger years were not picture perfect. She witnessed abuse in her household and had to deal with traumatic events as young as age 5 when she had to help deliver her younger brother in a bathroom. Growing up and continuing to overcome life’s circumstances, Danisha has pushed to excel and go above and beyond to satisfy her passion. Danisha shared, “I’ve always loved fashion and have been a “stylist” to friends, family, and strangers for years. People ask me for advice all the time on clothing choices and how to put a look together for special events or occasions etc. I love fashion and as long as I’m doing something that incorporates it I will be happy. I didn’t choose my career, I feel like it chose me. Although I didn’t go to college for fashion during my matriculation at Fisk University, I was always involved with the annual homecoming fashion shows and other fashion events. I love fashion it’s artistic, expressive, fun and most of all Interesting.” Photography: Flash Time Pics

Spotlight, D. Greene Continued ...

For motivation Greene says, “Being successful, making people feel good in what I style them in or others liking a look I put together and most of all those who don’t like what I do or the choices I made for certain looks because it gives me other points of views. I want to make my grandmother proud and my siblings as well.” Her future plans include turning Yours In Fashion into a styling company or house that will help stylists, designers, photographers, and models lives easier by being a go to for many needs. She also is hoping to donate a performing arts center to Fisk University that will be resourceful and more than adequate for the students needs in radio, television, dance, and fashion students. Hopefully, with the new facility and funding, Mass Communication, Theatre, Dance, and Fashion will be an option for which students can major. She would like the major in Fashion to include Merchandising, Design, Textiles, Interior Design amongst others. Danisha Greene is a success in the making with a portfolio that speaks volumes! Creative directing for Forward Motion Studios, Co-Stylist for Mahogany Charm Boutique’s Soul and the City Fashion show, Model Wars, and also gracing numerous magazines with her flare! Danisha Greene has put in her work for over 10 years and it is paying off! She leaves us with her favorite quote by Marianne Williamson…think on this, “Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, and fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.” To Contact Danisha Greene, Yours In Fashion email abdiva22@gmail.com or at (615)335-4635

Scene In Fashion On the Scene: Yours In Fashion, DaNisha Greene 2 Pairs and a Wild Card Lace and Pearls never fail from left to right the first girl has on a little black dress (LBD) with lace over the sleeves and neckline. It appears the lace covers the bodice, but the dress is either a tank style under the lace or maybe even a corset shape. She accessorized with long draping pearls and simple black pumps. Her pop of color came in with her pink lipstick and I like her look. Pretty in pink, the girl in the middle has a on a simple body fitted dress w/boxed shoulders that puff down the sleeves which stopped above the elbow. She has on strappy metallic looking shoes which I’m not fond of, but assume they match the dress. Her accessories were very simple with a two layered cross necklace and studded earrings. The other LBD the third girl is wearing is more detailed yet understated. It’s shorter than the other one yet the trim around the bottom of the dress and sleeves are lace. It has a scoop neckline with puckering at the sleeves for a little volume. I love her dress and the black pumps she paired it with. To give it a pop of color she has bright turquoise finger nails.

Sassy Sunshine

This is a fabulous cocktail dress. It is yellow, silk, and strapless with a cinched waistline and a three dimensional flower detail in the front. The neckline has three squared pieces which seem to be coming up from the flower detailing and form an overlay of sorts in the front of the tube styling. It makes the dress very interesting. She has on blue pumps and accessorized her look with a simple black & silver ring along with green nail polish.
