Caring For Yearling Bulls
Rancher’s Choice
There are so many theories on how cattle should perform, some sound, some not so sound. The Holstein cow is very efficient in converting feed into milk and this may be done by the Holstein in a controlled environment. This enables the dairyman to produce a very inexpensive product. The consumer is demanding lean, tasty, tender beef at an inexpensive price. How do we produce this? That is the question! Tender meat comes from young animals. So we have to have fast growing animals that can grade and weigh 1,250 to 1,350 pounds at 13 to 14 months of age. The bulls that sire carcasses like this need to have explosive growth and fleshing abilities. They also have high metabolism so they may utilize and convert feed when exposed to it. As a result these young bulls are still growing fast at 13 to 14 months old when they are turned out to breed. They cannot get enough feed to maintain their growth and muscle mass and breed cows at the same time. Something has to give. These young bulls will not stop breeding, and likely their skeleton growth will not stop. It then means something else needs to give. The result is quite often a rapid drop in condition of the yearling bull. A slower growing bull can maintain himself better, but his offspring will not convert feed well and they will reach market at a later date, possibly adding a little to the toughness of the meat. There can be a fine line in these genetics and we must guard against hard doing animals. However, after breeding season the majority of these good young bulls should be put on good feed and are then able to convert feed and rapidly regain their body mass. If they can do this it is an indication that they are easy doing cattle. When the breeding season is completed these good yearling bulls that have good feed conversion and growth rates must be exposed to feed that compliments their rapid rate of gain to get their body mass in acceptable condition for winter.

This is why these young bulls should not have to compete at the feed bunk with older herd bulls. If you feed all the bulls with enough energy and protein for these young bulls, then the old bulls may become too fat by spring, particularly if the older bulls are easy converters. As a two-year-old the growth curve has leveled out and the bull is more able to look after his body needs. The best feed for yearling bulls is a high quality hay and 1.5 per cent of his body weight for a balanced grain or pellet ration. That is a 1,450 pound bull needs to be exposed to free choice, high quality hay and approximately 15 to 20 pounds of a balanced ration. A young bull looked after in his first year could possibly give one or two more years as a breeding bull and that would make those few extra dollars to feed him properly look pretty cheap. I don’t know much, but what I do know I learned from being in the cattle business for 30 years. Things I learned you can’t do: starve a profit into your cattle through poor feed, poor care or weak genetics. You can’t just hope to top the market if your cow herd is a mismatch of all different types of cattle. The good thing is you are in control of the care and the genetics that go into your cattle. I was at the auction market the other day. It was very interesting. I will tell you what I saw and how it relates to your ranch. Some of this is preaching to the converted. Being in the cattle business is a business so besides raising cattle we might as well get all the money we can out of it. This is what I saw: - top cull cows sold for $.82/lb - common cows sold between $.51/lb and $.74/lb averaging $.65/lb - difference between top culls and average culls was $.17/lb x 1,350 lbs = $299.50 - top cull bulls sold for $1.02/lb - average cull bull sold for $.82/lb; - difference of $.20/lb x 2,300 lbs = $460.00 - top quality 500 lb steer calves sold for $2.02 - average 500 lb sold for $1.82 to $1.85 with off types selling as low as $1.50; average of 500 lb steers $1.85 - difference between good of $2.02 -$1.85 = $.17 x 500 lbs = $85.00 The different weights all played out the same with good quality cattle bringing a premium on all weights. The difference in price of the quality cattle was a lot bigger spread on this market than on a down market. This tells us ranchers what a good bull is worth. If you keep him 4 years you may have 20 of his daughters retained so 20 x $299 = $5,980 more when you cull those cows. You will get $460 more when you cull him. You should sell 30 of his calves/year x 4 years = 120 calves x $85 more for top quality = $10,200. You can play with these numbers but it gives you an idea the difference a quality bull can make. The numbers add up to $16,640. That is what the market told me on Feb.15/2012. What is Bill doing? I’m feeling good. Kim is renting my pasture and I have a few cows in partnership at Matt Fleury’s. I am helping Matt and Kim marketing their cattle and getting in their way when there is any work to do. I have an interest in some herd bulls at both places. I really miss having the corrals full of little black calves this time of year so I go to Matt or Kim’s to get my cow fix and still be part of this great cattle business. If you want to top the market take some time and visit these 2 great cow herds. You will find cows with the strength to produce top bulls. If you like the cows just keep buying their bulls so your cows will soon look like theirs and will give you calves that will “top the market”. I always said there are 3 things a seedstock producer needs to be successful: 1) you must have good cattle 2) you must know how to feed the cattle to take advantage of the genetics 3) you must be a people person In my opinion Matt and Kim have all these qualities. I have been partners with Kim for over 30 years. The last thing I will say is Marlene and I had a great holiday in Mexico this winter. Bill D

Rancher’s Choice Sale 2012 Terms and Conditions CATTLE INSPECTION - All sale cattle will carry identity tags corresponding to sale lot and/or tag numbers shown in the catalogue, and will be available for inspection at sale facility commencing the day before the sale. ALL CATTLE SELL - Every animal entering the sales ring will be sold to the highest bidder, subject to such health tests as may be required under regulations of Agriculture Canada. ANNOUNCEMENTS - Errors discovered in the catalogue will be corrected by announcements from the auction block at sale time, and such corrections shall take precedence over the printed matter in this catalogue.

DNA TESTING - The Canadian Angus Association now requires that any sire of a calf to be registered with the CAA must be DNA tested. Rancher's Choice sale bulls have not been DNA tested. Therefore, it is the buyer's responsibility to make certain that any bull used on registered females, from which the offspring are to be registered, is DNA tested before going into service.

DELIVERY - Bulls will be delivered to central points within a three hundred mile radius on a $2,500.00 purchase or more. We are again asking our customers to please bring their trailers and help us. It's not that we will not deliver but it's physically impossible to get these bulls out in the short time frame we have to work with.

MAIL BIDS - Orders for the purchase of sale cattle may be entrusted in complete confidence to any of the sale staff. RISK - Ownership risk to the purchaser commences when the auctioneer's hammer falls. Insurance is recommended. Hartford Insurance will be applied for delivery purposes. BULL WARRANTY - We guarantee to provide you with a sound, fertile bull capable of servicing a reasonable number of cows. In the event that your bull is a non-satisfactory breeder the seller will not, under any circumstances, be responsible for more than the original selling price of any bull or female sold in the sale. The consignors will not provide replacement or credit for physical injury or mismanagement. Therefore we stress the importance of insurance on your bull. An insurance agent will be available on sale day. TERMS OF SALE - Terms are cash or cheque. No sale entries will be released until satisfactory settlement has been made. Animals for export may not be released unless payment has been received prior to departure. Registration papers will be supplied upon completion of sale transaction , including payment in full.
