Welcome to the 6th Georgian Angus Premier Sale at Harprey Farms Proton Station Ont. The Hargrave family invites you to join them and consignors Glen Islay, JPD, Domaine Trevallon, First Line Angus and Heatherlea Angus. We are “the program with a purpose”. The 2010 Canadian Black Angus Show Female’s grandam, Harprey Miss Middlebrook 16H was produced in our program. The Middlebrook cow family is one of the strong cow families at Harprey Farms. The cattle we produce are commercially focused whether females or bulls. We feed out the cattle not used in the seed stock sector and we know what grade and yield economics are. We welcome you to visit prior to the sale. All cattle will be available for viewing on Friday September 9th, 2011. We look forward to your attendance at the sale for some Angus fellowship. Alan & Don Hargrave

E

The turn around year for the cattle business has arrived, and with much pride and renewed enthusiasm we welcome you to the sixth GAPS sale. The enthusiasm comes from the strong and increasing demand for good Angus bulls and females. Our pride comes from the record of the cattle we have sold in previous sales, and the quality of this year’s selections. In 2008 Remington Ranch in Alberta purchased a daughter of Bonnie Chance Bardolene 10A carrying Remington King 11W who turned out to be the top pick of the hundreds of bull calves born there, and is being used heavily in their large herd. In 2009 Kelsey Stewart from Manitoba bought a Monty daughter [her father Brent complained that Kelsey went over her budget] that was carrying SCC Final Answer the top selling bull in their sale this year at $9500. Many, many other purchases from the GAPS sales, not only from ourselves, but also from the other consignors have gone on to be outstanding individuals in their respective herds. Glen Islay females offer an outcross to the popular bulls available through semen catalogues, and our cattle have proven to have the phenotype, structural soundness, and performance to compliment those genetics in a very positive way. As always we continue to be commercially focused, economically driven, and motivated by your success. We welcome your call before the sale, at the sale, or long after the sale. Sincerely, Don

The Double AA herd of Bill and Don Dillabaugh has been supplying hundreds of bulls to ranchers for nearly forty years and through line breeding to the Bardolene sire line and the Annie K cow family they have been extremely successful with almost exclusively Canadian Genetics. The very popular Double AA Old Post Bandolier was bred and raised at Double AA and discovered as a five year old in a commercial herd. He is now the featured herd sire at three of the largest purebred herds in Canada, Remington Land & Cattle, LLB Angus and Peak Dot Ranch. The popular Supreme Champion Female at both the 2008 Agribition and the recent World Angus Forum is an Annie K from Soo Line Cattle Co. We went to the Double AA Bull Sale in March 2009 and bought our choice of their bulls, Double AA Bardolier 119U. He is line bred Bardolene and Annie K on both sides of his pedigree and was the youngest bull in the sale. He only weighed 73 lbs at birth, but at exactly eleven months of age he weighed 1140 lbs, had 35 cm testicles and passed the semen test. He has a great hair coat, ideal structure, thick butted, big wide muzzle and absolutely perfect feet. He has maintains his condition amazingly, has a nice temperament. We are extremely pleased with his offspring and plan to continue to use him in our breeding program.

Jeremy Eric of Bridgefoot was recommended to us by a friend in Tasmania, who bought thirty embryo’s from us and appreciated the same values in cattle that we do. We brought in the only semen from Scotland on Jeremy Eric and he has left us some very outstanding progeny. The dam of Trailblazer is well known to many and has generated more income for us than any other cow in our herd currently. The Jeremy Eric and Trailblazer cattle are exceptionally well muscled, good footed and moderate framed. They will improve the yield on most Angus cattle and this fits our commercial bull trade very well. We are using Trailblazer on a group of cows on Manitoulin and another son of Jeremy Eric named Glen Islay Cyrus 22W that you will hear about is being used at home. Fresh genetics with tremendous potential.

Snako was born in the Bonnie Chance herd of CK Armistead at Onoway, Alberta, and was purchased by John Moneo of Old Post Ranch, now Peak Dot Ranch. When I visited the Moneo’s in February l973, I saw the most outstanding two year old bull, that I had ever seen and was encouraged to try and buy him at the upcoming Regina Bull Sale. That bull was Bardolene of Old Post 5. He set a new record price at the Regina Bull Sale and was purchased by Bill Dillabaugh of Double AA Angus, and the rest is history. Bill based his whole program on sons and grandsons of Old Post 5 and the more that he line bred those cattle the better they became. All of the hundreds of Double AA Bardolene bulls trace to Old Post 5 and Bonnie Chance Bardolene 10A. While at Moneo’s that cold February day I was tremendously impressed by the yearling heifers and two year olds and of course the two year old bull Old Post 5 all sired by Bonnie Chance Bardolene 10A. Before I left that day I purchased him and although he was injured at the A.I. stud before I got him home, we still have some of the semen he produced. After all the hype and promotion of show winners and EPD trait leaders that promise new levels of excellence, we now realize that great cattle never change and that the truly greatest cattle of the l960’s and 1970’s in Canada, were as good as the best cattle of the 21st century. Since we went back and started using Bonnie Chance Bardolene 10A about eight years ago we are extremely pleased with the growth, fleshing ability, fertility, structural soundness, and muscle expression of his progeny. His influence will be a very important part of our future. It is noteworthy that the complete Bonnie Chance herd sold to Hackamore Ranch in Mississippi and when Hackmore dispersed in l973, the sire of Snako sold as an active breeding bull at eleven years of age. Snako’s dam sold at 18 years of age with a bull calf at foot and was rebred. Imagine moving from North of Edmonton to Mississippi as old cattle and still being fertile and productive.

When we started going back and using semen from Canadian bred bulls from the 1960’s and 1970’s we were not sure how successful we would be, but we hoped we could raise bulls like Winston 14U. He is as problem free as they come. He excels at the little things in a big, big way. Great feet, powerful hind leg, tremendous length of rear quarter, above average testicles, strong top, lots of muscle expression, and a great temperment describe Winston 14U. We bred more cows to him than any other bull last year. Angus Acres Winston 249B was only used for one year at Double AA and Saskalta Ranches before breaking a leg and ending his life. The influence of those 30 or so calves in those two large herds is phenomenal. The dam of Winston 14U is well known and possibly our best daughter of Bonnie Chance Bardolene 10A. Her powerful daughter of Winston 249B, Glen Islay Pride 14S was the incentive to breed Pride 12N back to Winston 249B and fortunately we got Winston 14U. We have flushed Pride 12N three times to other Canadian bulls, and after she calves to Coalbridge Marshall 15 next January we will flush her again, this time to Winston 249B. Breeding cattle is so much fun when a plan comes together like this.

Here is a foundation cow from the Double AA herd in Saskatchan that has done a good job for us. She has produced herd bulls for Carmarthen Lake Farms and for the purebred herd of Colin Trivers. She has an exceptional heifer calf this year by Brookside Bandolier 124 that we are retaining as her replacement. This cow is the problem free kind, easy to work with, and has calved earlier every year that we have owned her. The service to Old Post should give you a very marketable straight Canadian bred calf. We recommend this cow very highly. She has a beautiful profile and udder and a rich Canadian pedigree that includes at least two exceptional cows Batschol Ruby 82R, and Starhaven Delia 55 who was the most famous cow in Canada when she was at Prospect Farms near London, Ont. The late Dick Turner bought this cow for me, and I never thought I would sell her, but we have a daughter by Bonnie Chance Bardolene 10A, and her really outstanding heifer calf by Brookside Bandolier 12U that we are retaining. We are trying to trim our cowherd numbers, so this flush quality cow is available. Bred: March 29/11 to Double AA Bardolier 119U.

Every year we offer a daughter of Bonnie Chance Bardolne10A, and they usually are at or near the top of the sale. Last year the top seller was a bred heifer sold to Remington Ranch in Alberta at $5800 and the top calf went to Ron Winder at Wyoming at $3600. The mother of this young cow was in our show herd a few years ago, and then sold to Tim & Kim Young. We bought her back as an old cow, flushed her, and that resulted in this lot and a full sister that we are keeping as well as a few embryos still in the tank. Lady Master of Mardon 068B is the mother of Oak Manor Blue Chip that we still use on heifers, and the Lady Ladmere 097W cow was the top performance cow in the 350 cow herd at Mardon Farms. This has been a powerful cow family for many generations. We are retaining her heifer calf by Glen Islay Winston 14U. Bred: April 10/11 to Double A Bardolier 119U.

That is true, but his sons have done well also including Winston 14U and Glen Islay Winston 15X that we sold to Ronan Farm in Alberta. The dam of this lot is one of our top Monty daughters, many of which have been features of this sale in previous years. Back in our showing days we had two grand champion females at the Royal Winter Fair from this Magic cow family.

Here is a moderate framed fleshy Canadian bred heifer. Belmoral Baros 4’75 was Grand Champion at Agribition in 1976 with the judge Doug Henderson. Bovimela Baros 13A was one of the most popular bulls ever sold from Canada to the U.S.A., and became famous at Hackamore Ranch in Mississippi. The Baros cattle topped several test stations for the Don Bell family of Belmoral Ranch in Saskatchewan. Northern Excitement GAF 13J was a grandson of the famous Great Northern, and is the grandsire of DMM Essoteric 67R that built the cow herd at Miller Wilson Angus in Alberta. Glen Islay Maggie 24L has been a strong producer at Glen Islay and her mother Lady M20F is still going at Heatherlea Angus at 15 years old. Bred: April 6/11to Brookside Bandolier 12U.

We like all of our Old Post daughters, and this one comes from one of our most productive cow families. Old Post excels at so many common sense traits, great feet, rugged bone, super hair, lots of growth, nice easy temperment, and exceptional fertility. We bred Barbara 1W to her own son Masterpiece 2Z to get Barbara 15M and that line breeding really worked as Barbara 15M is a great producer, and very youthful at 9 years with an udder that will last another nine years. Masterpiece 2Z was Reserve Grand at the Royal Winter Fair as a calf, then exported to the U.K. where he was the Supreme Champion at the Royal show in England. This heifer will be a great cow for someone. Bred: March 27/11 to Figure 8 Tommy Boy.

These Old Posts are the commercial cattleman’s kind. They do so many things right, and if you semen test the sons they come up aces every time, for scrotal size, shape and quality of semen. We expect Old Post to be a part of our program for a long time to come. Monty daughters anchored our consignments to this sale for several years, and we have retained a productive group of his daughters. Note this highly consistent Magic cow family and also note that we are consigning an excellent heifer calf from Magic 44T as well. The service to F.V.20K King 308M is interesting as well since we sold a heifer bred to King in the 2009 sale to Remington Ranch that produced their best bull and is still in use at their ranch. The co-top selling heifer calf last year in this sale was a daughter of Bardolier 119U selling to Max Harris at Caledon, Ontario. The combination of the Bardolier, Bardolene and Winston lines have been highly successful for Double AA and Saskalta herds in Saskatchewan. Jennifer 76U is one of two full sisters that we have as a result of sharing a flush with Joel and Irene Thomas on their best cow JPD Jennifer 36 G. The Annie K cow family developed by the master breeder Bill Dillabaugh is arguably the most prolific cow family in all Canada. To name just a couple of accomplishments, and there many, the $100,00 Grand Champion cow at the recent World Forum was an Annie K, and the highly popular Double AA Old Post Bardolier is line bred to the Annie K family. As a matter of fact the grandam of this heifer Annie K 548’03 is a paternal sister to Old Post, both being sired by Blackman 252’96 and Annie K 280’96 is sired by Winston 249B making this heifer even more attractive to those that appreciate the benefits of line breeding to the best of straight Canadian genetics. Considering that both Pride 12N and Annie K 548N are both in our flush program in 2011 we can recommend this heifer very highly. The service sire is our best son of Double AA Bardolier 119’08 and now is herd sire for the really good herd of Harvey Mills at Oil Springs, Ontario. Bred: June 10/11 to Glen Islay Bardolier 25X.

Unlike most of our lots you will not see much Glen Islay breeding in this pedigree. However Harprey Miss Middlebrook 57Y was sired by Mr Glen Islay and out of Glen Miss Middlebrook 14M born in 1980. The Miss Middlebrooks are very popular at Harprey and more of their champions have come from that family than any other over many years. We have never used Right Time or EXT in our program, but when we saw how well SBCC Miss Middlebrook 124M had produced for D.J. and Julie Smith we just bought her as the top selling female in their dispersal. We also tried to buy the rest of their Equator semen but it fetched over $400 per straw. Those of us that used Papa Equator all wish there was more semen available to use. This heifer may well be the youngest Equator daughter in Canada and there will not be many opportunities to get a daughter of this landmark sire, especially out of such a prolific cow family. It is not surprising that this is one of the most attractive heifers in the sale. Trailblazer packs as much muscle expression as you can get in an Angus bull and is a proud and powerful, very masculine individual. His dam Erica 7G has produced sale toppers and left a strong influence in our herd. Glen Islay New Deal 5 J won his class at Agribition, and his sire Newton 4E is the only bull I can recall that was Grand Champion at the Royal Winter Fair for two consecutive years. Maggie 40L is a cow that brings in a premium calf each year, and looks like she will last for a long time to come. Papa Equator adds more strength to this tabulation. You can build a herd around this kind of female. Bred: May 1/11 to Glen Islay Forte 99W.

Both Erica 7G and Pride 23Y were daughters of old Traveler 23-4 and both were the most outstanding cows we owned in their day. We have talked about the contribution of Erica 7G in other footnotes, and remember Pride 23Y was the dam of Glen Islay Blue Label 27G that was Grand Champion at both the Royal and the Agribition. John, Pat, Darryl, Michaela, Evan, Owen , Nolan and I would like to welcome you to the 6th Annual G.A.P. Sale. We are pleased to be part of such a great group of consignors and The JPD Crew are excited to offer for sale some spectacular bred yearlings and five of our own heifer calves. Late last fall we decided to fill a heifer pen for the winter and so John set about to find some that he felt fit our profile, and I think he has done a spectacular job. We have also quickly reached comfortable calving capacity here at JPD and so we are offering some fancy heifer calves that prior to now we would not have parted with. We continue to breed for cow families which is very evident in our herd. Michaela informs me that we are now full of Blackcaps, Prides & Marions! My perspective is to keep what you like and find herd sires and seedstock to compliment and advance the herd. I know that all of us here can agree on that! I focus a lot on temperament as I truly believe that easy going cattle are easy-doing and a pleasure to work with. We thank you for taking your time to view what we have to offer and look forward to seeing you at the sale. If you are unable to make it sale day, but would like to view the cattle here at the farm ahead of time, I am always available. Lori Chalmers

Locust Grove World Angus 7W is a promising young herd sire bred by Tom & Judy McDonald. He is sired by the BC CJCL Embazon, a top son of the legendary OCC Emblazon, also note the Ambush, Fullback and Touchstone breeding, every sire on the fourth line was a highly regarded A.I. sire.

Here is a fault free cow with lots of potential in the prime of her life. Princess is a proven matron that show’s good muscle shape with volume but in a very feminine package. She is one our better producers, one of those cows that never miss and weaned our top end offspring. The bloodlines of Futur Princess 18R combine two of the most performance bloodlines at the farm. A half sister sold to M.Greg Hill and did very well for him, dominating many show rings on the Ontario circuit. A daughter of Princess 18R was purchased at the December Futurity by Pettywood Cattle. Have a look on her TC Total bull calf this year and you will be convinced of her ability to raise stunning progeny! Bred A.I.: April 16, 2011 to SAV Providence 6922. Bar Doll is a very complete young female that has never stops surprising us. Smaller framed than most of our cows, Dolly doesn’t seem to be bothered by her size as she weans the heaviest calf over the average. This is the kind of typical efficient cow we would all like in our herd. She is sired by Cudlobe Millenium 6M, Agribition Bull Calf Champion and herd bull at JPD Angus. 30T’s dam is now working in the good Glen Islay herd and is still producing top offspring. A special two years old cow, that was part of our show string. Flora 7W is by the Genervation A.I. bull K C F Bennett Architect M299, who is renowned as a real performance bull. Flora 7W is no exception as she was our heaviest calf and also in her yearling group. Flora 7W’s dam, Brantnor’s Flora 18N is a one of our favorite cows and is backed by a prolific bloodline in Ron Bryant’s herd. WorthMor cattle purchased a half sister to 7W a couple years ago through the GAP Sale and they really like her. Take a long look at her first progeny, a very good massive bull calf that we would like to retain show rights until after the Quebec Gold Show in Victoriaville. Bred A.I. This one hurts! Probably one of the best cows we have ever owned so far. Purchased with determination from John Duivenvoorden who held very tightly all of his 54B and 62B progeny. 5R’s dam, JPDH 10M is an elite cow and was also purchased by us when John and Pat dispersed. Her flush sister 22M is now working at Lori Chalmers and still is a cornerstone in their herd. 5R was showed as a junior project and did well in the show ring. What a brood cow she has become! She was the pick of many visitors this summer who say how much she is the ultimate easy keeping cow. She has produced two outstanding bull calves that sold respectively $3500 and $3000. Her first heifer sold at a Quebec Sale as the high selling lot and the other show heifer sold to a Quebec breeder. 5R is a incredibly long spined, naturally thick cow with a very tight udder. We would like to thank the Hargrave families for hosting the GAP Sale again this year, and the GAP consigners for allowing us to participate. The five cows offered by First Line Angus are all very strong structural fault free cows. There are three Salt Creek Bob heifer calves that require serious consideration for their muscle shape, thickness of top and performance. With the lack of Bob semen available, it is really hard to part with them. The two Heavy Hitter heifer calves do not take a back seat either. Finally the SAV Heritage bred heifer and January heifer calf are exceptional young females. Any of these females will be a great addition to any herd. Thank you for your evaluation on Sale day. Countess 21Y’s dam is the last of the Basin Prime Cut cows in our herd. Countess 6N produces excellent herd bulls and solid females like this SAV Heritage daughter. 21Y is already exhibiting a lot of shape and design, just like her mother. She is very long sided, with an angular front end, sound feet and legs. 21Y is eligible for the $250 rebate if successfully completed as a 4-H project in 2012.

Rosebud is very straight in her lines and like most SAV Heritage daughters, has that extra length of spine. Her dam 4H, although her pedigree is a little dated remains in our herd because of her youthfulness, longevity and this year she is raising one of the heaviest bull calves who is a full brother to 10X. Bred April 21/11 to SAV Pioneer and exposed June 21/11 to First Line Kodiak 8X a Kodiak 5R grandson out of an Atlasta Wendy cow.

Salt Creek Bob 7003 created a lot of excitement at the Denver National Western Stock Show a couple of years ago. He is a stout made, thick and correct herd sire, an outcross to most Angus cattle with top Hoff breeding on both sides of his pedigree. His progeny at First Line are thick topped and heavy muscled with lots of rib shape.

Blackcap 17T is a very attractive young cow, which explains why she had a successful show career for the MacLean family. Her pedigree contains influence from some solid herds from across Canada. Bred to SAV Providence sexed female April 18, 2011 and exposed to First Line Winslowe is a Pioneer son out of a Predominant daughter. Winslowe posted an actual weight on Feb. 2, 2011 of 1652 lbs. and is co-owned with Bond Vale Farm.

This is a very nice packaged cow, moderate frame, long spine, feminine front, well uddered and a nice disposition. 4T’s pedigree is also a nice mix combining the Matrix line with Dateline and New Trend. She has her second good heifer calf at foot this year. Bred April 16, 2011 to SAV Free Spirit, the sensational and maybe best Net Worth son to date. At Champion Hill’s sale the top four lots were Free Spirit daughters with the high seller going to Joe Bandura for $51,000.00 ½ interest.

This Heavy Hitter calf is built just like her mother. On sale day, don’t discount her against the January calves because after showing her successfully in the April class she will be a life time producer in your herd as most Marie cows are. 5R is a six year old cow that looks like a three year old. Steve Debus bought 5R with dam and I bought her back as a yearling and she has been definitely worth it. Her first calf, a bull by Connealy Freightliner we showed at the World Angus Forum and is now working in Gail Babion and Ken Rushton’s herd. Her next calf by Predominant may well be the best three year old in our herd and her yearling heifer by Aberdeen is outstanding. She is deep and thick, well uddered and a front end that is hard to improve on. Bred June 19/11 to Connealy Final Product and exposed June 21/11 to First Line Kodiak 8X.

As I write this the heat wave and dry spell engulfing Ontario is truly a reminder of how lucky we have been the last number of years. As Canadians, we know to persevere as it will soon be winter and the heat will be only a memory. A high rate of determination and perseverance is standard for farmers and Angus breeders. The present state of the Angus business also is a testament of the rewards of sticking-to-it. Bull sales to the commercial side of the business are great. Don Currie called this week to inform us at Heatherlea that another export order is going to Russia for the second year in a row. Canadian Angus are not only in demand in Canada but around the world. We have a farm market at our place in Caledon and we attend the Brampton Farm Market Saturday mornings. The response to Black Angus beef is phenomenal. Consumers know that Black Angus beef is a product that they can count on. This group of bred heifers we are presenting this year will do a impressive job and contribute to any herd. Please feel free to call with any questions. So hats off to the Hargrave’s and the founding members of the GAP sale. Heatherlea Angus is delighted to be a part of the great event for the third year. Come and join us September 12th for some good Angus fun and hospitality. Cheers, The McArthur Family

This sweet fronted long bodied heifer is one you sell with second thoughts. However, we all know you have to bring good ones to the Hargraves GAP sale, so here she is. Beamer sired, she brings the strength of Hamilton Farms breeding on the top-side of her pedigree and the good cow making history of Nichols Extra H6 by the renowned Emulation EXT on the bottom side. Also keep in mind her birth date of April 5th, 2010. Bred A.I.: April 15/11 to MCATL Pure Product 903-55 –16482454Exposed: May 30/11 to August 1/11 to Sheidaghan Ideal 13W -1525660-

Before the sale started at Bob Switzer’s in April of 2010 I had the good fortune to be going through some of the bulls with recognized cattleman Robert Ballantyne from Livelong, Saskatchewan. Bob impressed upon me how Ideal 13W would mature and develop in the first year that we owned him and he was certainly correct.
