GUIDELINES FOR MANAGEMENT AND CARE OF YEARLING BULLS

Welcome everyone to our annual bull sale. As I write this mother nature has decided to give us a winter we won’t soon forget. Last year was a winter to celebrate for those of us in the cattle industry. This year it is a normal winter, I guess but we are hopefully through the worst of it as February is around the corner.

We were to start calving in and about the 4th of February but there are already 14 beautiful healthy babies on the ground scampering around. The season looks like it is going to be another great one for us here and we hope that those that have purchased bulls and then bred females from us this year have every bit of success that we seem blessed with each year. New life and a new beginning of renewed optimism in our industry with Japan opening its doors a little wider to our beef with anything under 30 months rather than 20 months. Things are definitely going the right way for us in the cattle industry. The supply of our product is down so the fall prices on calves should be better than ever. This winter with higher grain prices is just temporary so with a good spring and summer we will be well on our way to enjoy some good times this fall. With that in mind it is now time to think of your needs in regards to your new herdsire to compliment your cows needs. We are a breed that concentrates on the maternal side of things with calving ease and milking power. What we often overlook amongst our breed is the ability to perform with the calving ease. We like to run about a 1350lb cow on our farm and with that our cows like to deliver a calf from 70 to 95lbs which is what the commercial consumer looks for. But remember in a cross breeding program our bulls will compliment and give you calving ease with some serious vigor and growth in the calves. So if you are looking for a heifer bull or a cow bull we can supply your needs with an amazing group of yearlings again this year.

With the way the weather has played with us this year I will not picture each and every bull we are offering. I asked Cameron to pick 10 bulls to be pictured. The direction was to pick through the front, middle and end of the offering so that you can see a gambit of what we have to offer and not all the oldest bulls would be pictured. I am hoping this spurs your interest to come take a look at the whole group or to realize that the oldest to the youngest does not depict the quality but rather reinforces the fact that our group is strong from youngest to oldest. We will picture the rest of the offering by sale date so that we have pictures to sell by power point as we do each year. So to have to travel to a lot of sales is not a necessity. Just take the time to come look and you are sure to find what you are looking for right here. This year our sale will fall on the 27th of March and as God likes to play tricks on us around this time of year come prepared for any type of weather. If you are looking for a new herd bull this season take a moment to look through the offering and if you have never been to our yard make the trip you won’t be disappointed. Those that have supported us through the years know that what we offer is better than decent and that the numbers we offer can compete with any of the top bulls on offer in the industry. So mark us on your calendar and plan on attending a sale where you will find quality second to none with prices anyone can live with. 1. Remember, your bull is now only 10-12 months old, even though he may weigh 1,000 - 1,300 pounds. He has been on a feed test and ration changes must be done gradually. It is good to let them harden up on pasture before breeding season begins. However, the pasture must be good, and they will require extra energy and protein. If turned out on poor pasture or dropped off too fast, they can lose weight rapidly. Research shows that this causes a bull to produce poor quality semen and also affects the bull’s libido. It takes 60 days for sperm to develop and mature. Any stress condition during that time can reduce its fertilizing ability. 2. Don’t expect a young bull to compete with older bulls or horned bulls. If intimidated by an older bull, he won’t breed effectively. If handled properly and not dominated by older bulls, a young bull should serve 20 - 25 females his first season. Size of pasture and terrain also influence this. 3. Limit the breeding season to no more than 60 days on a yearling bull. If you can’t limit the season, consider rotation to give him a rest. 4. Watch a young bull early in the season to detect any physical problems. A virgin bull can have inadequacies undetected except through observation. 5. Maintain a good general health program, mineral, salt and fly control. 6. Recondition young bulls after the breeding season to allow them to mature to their genetic capabilities. This is a very critical age. A young bull’s usefulness as a two year old can be retraded if not properly reconditioned after use as a yearling. 7. After its first breeding season remember young bulls change their teeth anytime between 16 and 24 months depending on each animals maturity, therefore they may lose condition due to this so treat them with some extra hay and grain to prevent possible weight loss due to this change.

Terms and Condition of Sale TERMS - The terms of the sale are cash or cheque payable at par at sale location unless satisfactory credit arrangements have been made prior to the sale. The right of property shall not pass until after settlement is made. Double C Red Angus reserves the right to require a certified cheque as settlement before releasing any sale cattle. Should the purchaser fail to settle for his purchase, Double C Red Angus reserves full power to resell the animal to the best advantage, either publicly or privately, without further notice. Any loss arising from such resale together with keep and all other expenses shall be payable by the defaulter. All settlements must be made with the clerks of the sale before any cattle will be released. The owners, Double C Red Angus and sale staff have the right to refuse bids from anyone who has a previous record of default in payment and/or who has not made prior credit arrangements prior to the sale with the owners and/or sale management. BID - Every animal consigned to the sale must be sold by auction. No by-bidding will be permitted. Each animal will be sold to the highest bidder. DISPUTES - In cases of disputes, bidding will be reopened between the parties involved. If no further bid is made, the buyer will be the person from whom the auctioneer accepted the last bid. The auctioneer’s decision in such matters will be final. PURCHASER’S RISK - Each animal becomes the risk of the purchaser as soon as sold. ANNOUNCEMENTS from the auction block will take precedence over printed matter in the catalogue. Buyers are therefore cautioned to pay attention to any such announcements. CERTIFICATE OF REGISTRY - The proper registration or recordation paper, as the case may be, will be duly

transferred and furnished to the buyer for each animal after settlement has been made. SHIPPING - Assistance will be given in making shipment after the sale, but sale management or seller assumes no risk. Expenses incurred are the responsibility of the purchaser. Purchasers are requested to furnish shipping instructions when making settlement. Bulls can be delivered free of charge within reasonable distances so long as Double C Red Angus can do so within a day or two of required time, and notice is given in advance of the delivery date required. GUARANTEE - All animals will carry standard breeding guarantee as specified by the applicable Canadian Breed Association. At no time shall the seller’s liability exceed the purchase price of the animal. EXCEPTION TO GUARANTEE - In cases where the animal is subjected to any hormonal or surgical reproduction techniques after the sale, the guarantee shall be null and void. In the cases of bulls, they are guaranteed to breed naturally according to applicable Canadian Breed Association Guarantee, but no guarantee is given that semen from any bull will freeze. HEALTH - We ensure our bulls are semen tested and have passed all breeding health protocols. ACCIDENTS - Although every precaution will be taken to protect the safety and comfort of buyers, neither the Sale Management, Auctioneer, or Association assumes any responsibility in this matter and disclaims any liability legal or otherwise in the event of accident or loss of property. We will keep the bulls free of charge till the end of April then a yardage will be added on. We offer a site unseen purchase program on all our animals. This calf just about got away on us. I overlooked getting him registered and then Cameron says I want him in the sale so I had to do some fast organizing and the Angus Association in Calgary says no problem you submitted all the numbers so it is done. Thank goodness as here is a calf that needs to be seen to be believed. He has the confirmation that will draw your attention in the pen and he is definitely a heifer bull prospect with performance to go along with it.

This Max 96X was purchased to use on heifers and he hasn’t let us down but he is producing unreal animals off of our younger cows. He has earned a spot in our yard for years to come and he has it all. Calving ease and performance. He should be a curve bender in all areas. This year we have a few of the heifers calved off of this young sire and again they are popping out according to the size of their moms. If you are looking for an everything bull with calving ease you can’t walk pass this boy.

We didn’t keep this young fellow for long but he left us with some handsome sons that we will offer in our sale this year. Going back to Red Towaw Indeed 104H that Six Mile has promoted for the unreal females he produces. Then we have Lodi Prince on the cow side that is a definite producer. We loved the Black Red Carrior calves that Heritage gave us so much that we kept 6 or so bulls in tact to offer you as heifer or cow bull prospects. We were so excited with the black females we got from mating him to our red cows that we have kept just about all the black heifer calves and we will keep and breed them to give us a mix in the pedigree and hopefully a stronger genetic base that is just a little different than other breeders. So don’t pass up the opportunity of these outstanding young bulls.

Cameron bought Premier as a back up for our girls a few years ago and his offspring are outstanding as you will see when you come to take a look at our offering. Premier has a heavier birth weight because of his extreme length of body as a yearling and it carries on into his offspring. His sons and daughters will go a long way in any herd. When we picked out this calfâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s dad we knew he would work well on heifers and knew that on our cows the majority of the calves would be calving ease specialists.
