Giant Killers Leeds United Publication

The Brief To design a limited edition publication for the one year anniversary in celebration of Leeds United’s record breaking win over Manchester United in the 3rd round of the FA Cup. This was a research driven brief which would make use of a variety of content from match commentary to fans quotes and statistics.

The Concept A luxury publication pack was designed for the brief as a momento and something fans could buy as a gift or as a keep sake. The title of the book is ‘three one two thousand & ten’ which was the day of the game.

The Delivery The book was designed alongside a range of material that would be included in a supporters pack. Three posters were designed, as well as DVD packaging and artwork. The range includes what became the identity of the book to keep continuity across the range. The envelope packaging was printed with a black foil and custom cut sticker. Each book costs ÂŁ9.76 to produce and would have an RRP of ÂŁ13.99

Element Skateboarding Company Element Clothing Line

The Brief To produce and promote a range of typography driven t-shirts for the Skateboarding brand Element. The range is aimed at males ages 16 to 24, and have an interest in Skateboarding and the fashion trends associated with it.

The Concept 100% Element. The concept relates to what it takes be a professional skateborder. It is used to inspire the target audience and encourage them to set and meet their life goals.

The Delivery A range of five t-shirts were designed in total as well as promotional material. The t-shirts pictured above make use of a custom typeface I designed inspired by information graphics. Each chart relates to a Skateboarding fact that can be looked up in the promotional leaflet.

Arkitekt Magazine Branding & Magazine Style Guide

The Brief To design and develop the branding and future editions of Arkitekt Magazine, to be aimed at architect professionals and students. The magazine showcases new structures and gives in depth interviews with cutting edge Architects.

The Concept Because of the nature of the magazine, the design direction played with angular, and straight edge shapes. It had to be clean and accurate to tie in with the nature of Architecture. The masthead was developed to sit perfectly within the magazines grid structure.

The Delivery The branding and identity was designed for the magazine, as well as a host of style guides and sample spreads to show the design direction in action. Each style guide would relate to its own topic and inform designers working for the magazine of its structure, fonts, and colour palette.

The Spec The cover was printed on 300gsm gloss laminated stock which give the images greater depth and level of detail. The inside pages were printed on 80gsm gloss laminated stock, once again for the sake of the imagery. The spec books were printed on a heavier 130gsm as they would be handled much more, so would wear much quicker.


Garry Barker Publication pack

The Brief To design a publication that could hold all of Garry’s promotional material for various events and workshops he is involved with. Garry Barker is both a lecturer and fine artist at Leeds College of Art, and he wanted to create a publication that could be easily updated with new content as it is produced.

The Concept Everything that Garry produced was brought together into one pack. Because Garry had some much diversity in the content he added to the publication, it was decided that the publication should take the form of a pack with inserts that could that content could be inserted into.

The Delivery An identity was created using ITC New Baskerville which had the qualities of presenting Garry as traditional in his style of work but it could still work in a contemporary fashion. Every piece of content was designed to adhere to a different format that was not bound in anyway. This made it very easy for Garry to update the content as he wishes. The pack could be given or sent out to artists and ethusiasts.

The Spec Outer packaging was digitally printed on Grey Board. The essays were printed on an uncoated 135gsm Antique White stock. Etching studio card was printed on an uncoated 135gsm Grey Stone stock. The Vernon Street exhibition poster was printed on an uncoated 135gsm Pearl Grey stock. The Gallery consertina was printed on an uncoated 300gsm white stock.


Decades Limited edition prints

The Brief This brief was written exclusively for the LCA Pop-up shop, Made, which opens on the 25th May. A self-initiated brief entailed designing a range of prints based on decades. The prints would be sold in the made pop-up shop.

The Concept Iconography of the decades was the concept I came up with. I wanted to show the iconography in a simplistic way and to get the customer to engage with the print through memories of that particular decade. The icons were made up of inventions, trends, television and fads of each decade.

The Delivery The three prints would carry the same design, but would be each printed on a different colour stock. Over 130 objects were digitally illustrated by myself for the print series. Each print will have 5 copies and will be sold in as part of the shop.

The Spec Digitally printed on 130gsm colour stock. one colour print (process black). 15 prints were made to sell at ÂŁ8 each.


Charlotte Taylor Identity and stationery set

The Brief To design an identity and stationery set for graduate and TV/Film Producer Charlotte Taylor. Charlotte is forward thinking, organised and focused on her career and goals. We wanted to send this message to potential clients and employers to give her a head start in the industry.

The Concept The simple, clean and bold design direction was undertaken which was directed by the design and development of the identity which informed the rest of the range of deliverables.

The Delivery As well as the identity and stationery set, these tv idents were proposed as a possible introduction to a showreel. These idents would adorn Charlottes memorable iconography and would swoop across the frame with the video playing simultaneously inside and outside of the arrows. This idea has potential for development outside of my practice.

The Spec The business cards and stationery were printed on a combination of 300gsm and 120gsm Munken Polar stock. The spiral bound notebook makes use of a gold metallic ink.


Flatland Book publication and packaging

The Brief To design a new edition of the 1884 novella ‘Flatland’ by Edwin A. Abbott that challenges the way readers interact with a book.

The Concept To design and develop within the uniformity of a book on the outside and to develop a thought provoking piece using technology to bring the book to a new audience of readers.

The Delivery The delivery of the book had to reflect the concept of the content but also a new way in which readers can interact with the book. I chose to push the idea of introducing a new reading experience but also contain the contents of the product within the traditional packaging which could sit alongside other books in a collection. Chapter books were designed for each chapter and the book was split into two sections ‘This World’ and ‘Other Worlds’. These chapters opened up into huge A1 posters.

The original book features diagrams that look to explain the complex theories laced throughout the narrative. I saw an opportunity to develop these diagrams with the help of smartphone technology. Augumented reality would allow the user to scan the diagram with their smartphone to see a moving 3 dimensional representation which would swivel on axis as the phone was twisted.

The Range The rest of the range was designed including bookmarks for other books and postcards promoting the e-version of the book that could be read in a more conventional way. The second postcard design features a diagram which is in the book, and can be scanned with a smartphone to experience a 3d representation of the diagram. This technology challenges the concept of the Flatland world.

Bookmarking Because of the unusual format of the book and flexibility in which it can be read meant that regular bookmarks could not be used. Instead these branded sticky notes were produced to pinpoint the part of the book was reading. The user could also write a short message to remind them exactly where they were on the page. These sticky notes could be attached to the document if the pages were open or to the full sheet when displayed on a wall.

E-reading The digital revolution is gripping book sales so preparing a digitised version is a must. Since the beginning of the year, for every 100 paperback books Amazon has sold, the company has sold 115 Kindle books. The mock ups show the Kindle and iPad versions, as well as the itunes market place feature advertisement.


Anna Swingland Identity and stationery set

The Brief To design an identity and stationery set for graduate and Book Artist Anna Swingland. Anna needed an identity which would reference her commitment to her work and show the qualities of her personality. The nature of her work is very hands on and delicate.

The Concept The whole brief was driven by typography and stock experimentation. It was clear that we needed to get a balance between the commercial and personal traits within her work. Anna took pride in the service she could offer but this still had to work as a possible freelance business.

The Delivery Anna stressed the importance of how hands on and personal her work was. We felt that this had to come through as part of the design as book publishing is quite a niche market so clients want a service that is dedicated and friendly. The business card started the process of using Anna’s personal skills as a focus for the design. The card starts a conversation that ran through the stationery between her and her client.

The Spec The business cards and one of the postcards was printed on greyboard to reflect bookbinding materials. The stationery was printed on 120gsm Munken Polar stock. While the alternative postcard was printed on Loop Antique Milkweed.


Premier League Report Statistical Publication

The Brief To design and promoted a indie published report that invites Premier League fans to relive the football season. The report would be given to fans attending games on the first day of the new season to show how the season was won and lost.

The Concept Big and bold typography. The nature of the publication called out for large typographically driven diagrams and information graphics, which would be easy to flick through when in the context it is meant to be in. This would have to occupy fans for the 15 minute interval prior to the game so had to be simple to follow.


Premier League Report Statistical Publication

The Delivery The balance between boldness and intricacy had to be considered for this to remain interesting throughout. The publication was offset by large and small information graphics and full page halftone imagery. The image at the top of the page relates to the final Premier League table. Each team is seperate by the number of points accumluated and is represented in the leading. The team names are overprinted so the names are visible in the middle table area,

The Spec The full publication was printed on 80gsm newsprint using a standard four colour process.
