Let’s get it started
H
ello… and a very warm welcome to the first issue of 72M magazine… your compact companion for getting ready for everything life has to throw your way! In the true spirit of seventy2minutes.com when it was suggested that I consider a magazine to compliment the blog my first thought was “Really?? How?” Between family, friends, a full time job, a part time degree and a burning desire to build my own business empire time is something of a premium, but the more and more I thought about it the more I became excited at the prospect! I studied Media in college but gave up on ever becoming a journalist as; even then, the focus was on
sensationalism and celebrity. That’s not to say that I don’t appreciate a good celeb story here and there but there is so much “look-how-quicklyshe-snapped-back-into-shape-afterher-9th-baby” a person can take! So if 72M isn’t all about celebrities, babies and diets what’s it about? Well just like our sister blog, seventy2minutes.com/blog, it’s about life, fashion, blogging, money, destiny, ambition, passion, art, music, families, love, friends, health and everything we (yes you too) do to keep it all finely balanced! This issue I get to interview Darren Darnborough (page 12), a multi-talented ex-pat in LA. Actor, director, producer, writer and
entrepreneur, Darren is an old friend that I think is awesome and a great example of living life to the full! Ex-radio presenter Andy Holmes lets us into his world and gets personal about depression (page 8) and how he lives a balanced life whilst chasing his ambitions and managing a media career in local government. consider it most helpful when seeking to diagnose a person’s experience to begin at the beginning…
Your friend has identified a working environment that is bringing about decay through lack of stimulation; for the conclusion of ‘festering’ is an end, by way of a painful, possibly prolonged, ulceration to either a cure, or a significant alarm; before recovery can begin. When you feel something gnawing away inside of you, at your very guts, that is to say you have a ‘gut feeling’ about something, it is often difficult in the frenetic technological and economically driven culture of the western world to quiet any distractions and pay attention only to this. Which leads into the appearance of the new manager. Your friend describes how the manager has been ‘given’ This choice of adjective belies your friend’s thoughts beyond, perhaps, a new manager being ‘appointed’, ‘promoted’ to the position or ‘joining’ the organisation. In reality this manager may well be ‘shit’. No debate. Perhaps this person’s appointment to the position, is reflective (in a wider sense) of a team, department or even organisational culture, for if they are deemed worthy of elevation consider the system that would promote them. The miscreancy of this person, unjustifiable to your friend, indicates both the disparity of your friend’s values about that ‘way of things’, and the insecurities that can arise when an ego is flattered with greater powers. For the unworthy such powers bring with them fear. Fear of loss, fear of being discovered for that unworthiness, fear of being subsequently outshone by genuine merit or ability and fear from the shame

of their underhand methods to suppress their colleagues as a result of the inability to credit them. A resolution to this situation is of your friends own choosing. Bearing in mind the promotion of this manager, presumably, by those of like mind, maybe even like methods, an attempt to shine a light on them may result in your friend experiencing greater amounts of the same treatment in a kind of downward spiral… A frank discussion with the manager would only prove successful if this person is open to learning, and is an accepting individual but the suggestion that they are sensitive to someone ‘doing a better job’ would indicate that to forewarn them of concerns is merely to forearm them against any perceived threat. Ultimately our path is our own. If at any time we find it blocked or too dark to see a way through, we owe it to ourselves, and to the guarantee of there being something better, to find a way through. If in doubt of how to do this the very best first step is to make a decision… any decision… create an opportunity to move to a place of experience that feels, for your friend, right and harmonious. Boys don’t cry 1 in 4 adults in the UK and the US have reported mental health disorders. The large majority live a balanced and fulfilling life.

till it’s undeniable that mental health gets a bad press. One unfortunate incident and the media is ablaze with ‘crazed’, ‘unstable’, ‘lunatic’, words that seem a million miles away from ‘father’, ‘business woman’, ‘journalist’.
and low self-esteem and that this was just something I’d have to live with. I didn’t identify it as a genuine illness with my GP until I got back from the New York marathon in November 2009 In fact I remember the case of footballer Stan Collymore who, in the noughties, announced he was suffering from depression, to the derision of his manager and the vast majority of fans.
Aspiring author Andy Holmes suffers from depression but he hasn’t let this (or the negative press) stand between himself and his ambitions! AH: “Okay, so I’m a former journalist, so let’s start this in a language that I can understand. Our headlines today… **Local boy does good, achieves his ambitions by his mid-twenties in the world of broadcasting.**
“But Stan you’re earning loads of money, you’re playing sport professionally for your boyhood club, pull yourself together, you’ve nothing to be depressed about.”
**That same boy then goes to University, travels to New Zealand, runs the New York Marathon, makes a name for himself in the depths of Cornwall and then gets a well‑paid job in Buckinghamshire.** **And finally… This boy also suffers from depression.** Now I’ve put the depression as the ‘and finally’… a vain attempt to dismiss it as being something that doesn’t matter, but anyone reading this who has been visited by The Black Dog – be it a short one, or in my case many years, will know how difficult it can be to not let it dominate. When I was younger, I thought all I had was just a case of the blues

At the time I agreed with their views, but years later I see Mr Collymore’s point all too clearly when he says the biggest misapprehension about depression is that it’s not an illness. I’ve done so much in my life that I’m proud of, but much of it has honestly been lost in a dark cloud of misery. When depression hits it doesn’t respect wealth, rank or social standing, and once it has you, it will probably never leave without you getting help. I saw that help as a sign of weakness for many years, I’m a man so what would you expect?!! I saw it as part of me and never considered medication. But when I did, after returning from New York having had enough of feeling awful, it dawned on me that if you break a leg, you don’t Depression is among the leading causes of disability worldwide
Depression can be reliably diagnosed and treated in primary care
hop around on it hoping it’ll heal itself. So, taking medication has been a way of putting a bandage on a wound that’s been gaping since my school days when I was bullied. And boy have those tiny white pills helped, although there’s still a long way to go. I’m more confident in myself, I feel able to breathe and enjoy life and actually smile on the inside. My aim, with the help of Buckinghamshire MIND, is to set up a group for professionals like myself between the ages of 25 and 35, who will be able to meet in the county and realise they’re not as alone as the illness makes them think. After going on medication I announced on Facebook that I had struggled with depression for many years. After the initial responses of “We’d never have known” came firstly the supportive emails, even from people I hadn’t spoken to for years, and then the comments of “Andy, I’ve been there, you have my support” and sometimes “That’s how I feel, I’m going to get help too”. I hope reading this will help you or others you know, it’s certainly helped me to write it. Darren started his professional career treading the boards at prestigious venues like the Riverside Studios and Westminster theatre. After short appearances in The Bill, Eastenders, Pie in the Sky and Holby City he made the life changing decision to pack up and head States side, LA to be precise. Good move.
Me jealous? Nooooooo! Well, not much.
With an open heart and a head full of creative ideas Darren has managed to secure roles in award winning productions, co-produce, write and direct his own short films, host at the Cannes Film Festival and all whilst building an international business.
DD: Thank you.
Phew! This man certainly isn’t work shy and switches from glamming it with the glitterati to strategizing about his next business move with style and infectious charisma... perfect 72m material. Let me set the scene. London (sort of). LA (Definitely). Skype Take one excitable fashionista (that’s me), add a dash of Double-D and watch the fireworks. But, first things first; tea. We exchange light conversation as Darren makes a cup. Whilst the kettle boils he gives me a tour of the res… you can take the man out of Britain…
DD: You’re welcome 72m: I’m very excited because I know you’ve just landed a role in True Blood! Yay you!

DD: Yes. I am the dinner… so I guess I’m the ‘you’ as well! 72m: How was the experience? DD: You know… it was great! It’s great to work on a show that people know! When you say ‘I’m working on True Blood’ people aren’t like ‘huh?’… they know the show, they know what you’re talking about and the best thing is … and I know it sounds cheesy… but the best thing is the cast and the crew work together and the atmosphere… it’s like a family. It’s amazing, the people, the quality of the filming, the set everything 72m: And working with Stephen Moyer… who’s also a brit!
DD: Yes he is!

DD: Yes! From Brentwood! All my scenes are with Stephen. He’s excellent. Everyone working on True Blood is…. You know… I’m working with writers who’ve written episodes of Friends and Alan [Ball] who’s created things like Six Feet Under and American Beauty. The calibre is unbelievable and it’s great to have that level of talent around you. 72m: On the subject of Brits in LA tell me about some of the work you’ve been involved in promoting British talent (yourself included) in LA
DD: I co-founded Brits in LA a few years back. Me and 2 friends started by just getting a few people together for fun and it grew from there really! LA is not a daunting place but there are a lot of differences and sometimes it’s nice to have someone (or somewhere) to go to where you can ask questions, sit, relax, swap ideas… It started as a few evening events which turned into a Facebook group, then a breakfast club every Tuesday and Thursday. It’s great. 72m:

DD: Yes! Everyone is welcome and we all get together and discuss things like where we got drunk the night before and where we’re getting drunk tonight… because you know… that’s just Hollywood isn’t it! 72m: You’ve been very active in helping Brits out!
DD: It’s great. I’m on the committee for BritWeek now too. I know this. I’ve done my research 72m:
DD: Yes. Nigel Lythgoe recognised the cross investment between California and Britain. Basically California is the biggest investor for British talent and Britain invests the most in California. I was asked to be on the committee and I’m now involved in various events that take place over a series of two weeks. We have a lot of famous faces showing their support like Richard Branson and Victoria Beckham. This year it’s actually clashing with the Royal Wedding! 72m: Are you thinking Will and Kate planned this on purpose?
DD: [Laughs] I’m sure they did. I’m sure they thought of us. 72m: So… Actor, host, producer, author, director, entrepreneur… Where do you find the time?
DD: You know… I don’t. I don’t find the time I just enjoy what I do. My entire waking day is stuff I enjoy. I sometimes wonder how people find time to work! I’m always rushing around running errands but it just doesn’t feel like work. Things just happen and either you have to do it all or it all blends together… you know… like I’ve got a TV series I’m working on that I co-funded so I’m coproducer, I also have a role in it and I’m writing parts of it too… it’s like suddenly you do one thing and then it evolves into all things!
Look at Vince Vaughn and Matt Damon. Imagine somebody saying to them “Why bother with writing? You’re an actor!” In LA people understand that you can be multi‑talented as long as you follow through

72m: Your company… StuckForStaff. com. Born in ClactonOn-Sea in 2002 and it’s going Global!
DD: Who told you that?! 72m: Well… you’re in the US, UK, Australia, New Zealand and now South Africa! So… are you the next Richard Branson?
DD: I would love to be! There’s a difference between he and I… apart from lots of things like huge amounts of money and charisma… he’s solely focused on business and I have this horrible entertainment industry bug! I’ll continue to be entrepreneurial on one side but I’ll always have this other side to me but yes… I would love to be the next Richard Branson… maybe later on in my life I will be! 72m: I can see the resemblance. Maybe you can play him in a film role in the future?
DD: They are making a film about him! I would love to play him in a film role. I’ve met him as well. I was on the committee for one of his charity events “Rock the Kasbah”. I’ve met big actors and not been phased but with Richard Branson I was just starstruck and like “Oh man! It’s Branson!” I knew I’d meet him one day but the first time we met he tapped me on the shoulder and thanked me for my help with organising his event and told me it was one of the best he’d ever been to! I was like “Oh my God! Richard Branson! Thanking me?” and then the year after I had lunch with him and it was just amazing! He’s such a genius.

seventy2minutes with: Darren Darnborough 72m: 2011. What’s in the pipeline? How can we keep up with the Darren Darnborough buzz?
Timothy wrote, directed and produced a film called Powder Blue a couple of years ago with Forrest Whittaker, Jessica Biel and Ray Liota in it so I’m really excited to be working with him… he’s a little hero of mine… he’s done some really good work… that’s about it for now [laughs]… but ask me in two weeks and they’re be about 15 more things added to that list!
DD: I’ve had a really good 2011 so far. True blood is out in June. I’ve got a commercial running in the UK right now for XBox… but you won’t see me you’ll only hear me. I’m an avatar!
I’ve also decide that I’m marrying Natalie Portman [laughs] and on the day of our wedding Mila Kunis will be the one at the back who jumps up and shouts “stop, I want to marry him” [laughs]
I’ve just shot 3 different campaigns for Jeep. I’m in the world wide commercial. 1 for the US and Canada and I did the print and billboard campaign. I’ve also shot the international version.
72m: Awesome! OK. 72M is all about being crazy busy but still squeezing in that extra little bit of time to “get ready…”
I’ve been auditioning for a few pilots as well… one from the writers of Will and Grace and one from JJ Abrams 72m: What’s
Your Nivea for men post Grammy’s party look certainly “gives a damn”. You’re looking great! So tell us… switching from business man to red carpet star then back to business man again… what’s your secret?

DD: I can tell you the names of them. The first one is called “I hate that I love you”, and the JJ Abrams one is “Poe”. I went up for the role of Edgar Allen Poe… a paranormal investigator. I’m also hoping to do my directorial debut short film with a film called Stefano Formaggio. The website for that is www.stefanoformaggio.com. It’s a bit of a fairy-tale romance with a dark twist at the end. I’ve got a girl called Alice Greczyn, a very beautiful actress from America, playing the lead role Jasmine so I’m hoping to shoot that and tour the film festivals with it. I still have my TV show in development which is called ‘Andy and Chaz bugger off to America” 72m: You’re
DD: I’m hardly a red carpet star [laughs] I don’t know… I was going to say “it’s always business” but it’s always pleasure! Especially in LA. Business gets done when you’re having fun! I asked Richard [Branson] when I met him for lunch “in terms of my businesses… I said… you have these businesses; you can’t be working hard on all of them all of the time! When is the right time to put something down and move on to the next thing?” He just said when it stops being fun.

DD: Do you know what? He’s a hero. I would love to do a Franco. He’s about to start his PHD whilst winning Oscars and hosting the Oscars! I’m nowhere near that yet! But I’m also writing a feature film with a guy called Timothy Linh Bui. We’re about ¾ of the way through. 14

DD: Oh! What a great question! Wow. I’ve had loads! I’ll give you the two stand out moments.
When I was 16 I was in the London Hippodrome and I met this girl from Hawaii. We ended up having a little canoodle… so if you add those 20 minutes and attach them to the 52 minutes of the final descent when I was landing in Hawaii, at 16, because I’d flown all the way to visit a girl I’d met for 20 minutes in a nightclub [Laughs] That was probably the best. I’d never been to America, I didn’t really know this girl but I just got on this plane [being a hopeless romantic] and went. That has defined my life until this point because if I hadn’t taken the risk and if I hadn’t seen what else was out there… The second is purely gratuitous. My 30th birthday. In 72 Minutes I was being sung happy birthday by my good friends louder than the next table were singing happy birthday to Naomi Campbell. We were in the Dolce and Gabbana party at the Cannes film festival, drinking magnums of Dom Perignon champagne, being spanked 30 times by Dita Von Teese whilst Bruce Weber from French Vogue took pictures! Pretty phenomenal night!

Whatever perception you have of blogs, set them aside. Start with a clean slate. This is how I approached this article. I’ve combined my love of fashion, photography and words and have stumbled through many blogs from around the world; blogging is a global trend after all!
Do not be alarmed. If, like me, you have a genuine passion for people then blogging is the way forward. In a few short clicks you could be in the mind and the heart of a perfect stranger, confident, or crazy, enough to let you into their inner sanctum. Confident, because in a world saturated with pseudo-celebrities it takes some courage to step forward and declare your own voice, maybe a little crazy because in doing so some may mistakenly think that a blogger is just a wannabe celeb and automatically take the offensive view. As they say in the rap world ‘Ignore the haters’.

Firstly, I suggest before committing yourself, you write down all the benefits that being fitter will bring you, this will focus your mind when you don’t feel motivated.
Some of these benefits could be things like: • having more energy • better sleeping habits • stress release • looking and feeling better • personal time (where you forget the outside world) Now, the best way to work out for general fitness is to mix it up.

You need elements of cardio like jogging, power walking, skipping or cycling.
Not everyone likes cardio work outs but it’s a must if you want to burn fat so chose something you can stick to and focus on the benefits your body will reap! Say to yourself, I don’t like jogging but it’s great for calorie burning I’ll do what I can and then move on to something else!

Double whammy your metabolism and burn those calories by adding in body weight and resistance exercises before (or after) your cardio workout. Try a mixture of going to the gym, or local exercise classes where you don’t have to be a member. Rope a friend in for some of your workouts but avoid becoming dependent on them! Rely on yourself so there are no excuses for not working out if they no longer feel like going.

Workout videos can be great if you’re busy and want to avoid the gym but try to do some cardio outside as well. The fresh air is great for you and you should try and balance this out with the time spent inside

Diet wise, try not to eat more than you’re burning off during your workouts but don’t make it a chore or you won’t maintain it for long! If you have a good weeks training then treat yourself a little (and I mean a little). Try not to eat too late as this is the real weight gainer and eat as much fresh fruit and veg as possible.

We all have our good days and bad days working out. What is important is you stay committed and gradually it becomes second nature, like brushing your teeth or getting dressed in the morning!

Savings stamps are a way of saving towards big purchases, like Christmas, and most supermarkets will give you a pre-Christmas top-up depending on how much you’ve saved. The cons are that you can only spend them with the issuing retailer and most retailers do not monitor your savings for you so if you lose your stamps you lose out! MON£Y MATTER$ RATING 3/5
Switch it up Loyalty is a thing of the past and the surge of comparison sites are proof in point. Staying with the same service provider rarely serves you well as the best deals are often given to new customers! Every year give yourself an annual health check and make sure that you’re getting the best from your providers. If you’re not ask why not and don’t put up with feeble excuses. If they’re not prepared to treat you as nicely as they do their new customers, leave. Shop around, find where the best deals are for you and see if these deals still apply if you switch using a reward system like Nectar. If it does you’ll not only save money on your bills, you’ll earn money for your efforts too!

Buy now, save later It seems odd buying for next Christmas straight after Christmas is over but ignore the sentimentalists and think money! Items that don’t have a ‘use by’ date are ideal as you can stock them away until they’re needed. Con: You have to free yourself from the thinking that past season products are poor substitutes.
