Power up, it’s issue 11! This issue's theme, power, is a surprisingly difficult topic. There’s so much of it around and yet so little of it seems truly explored, or exploited, by the majority. There is power in money, sex, love, music, emotion, history, promises, politics, business, success, failure, information, knowledge, experience… it seems we cannot breathe without stumbling upon a source of power and yet the rhetoric of powerlessness is repeated until we begin to believe that it is the few that are powerful and the majority, powerless.

TMinx giveaway - To herald the coming of Issue 11 we teamed up with Treacherous Minx for our giveaway and the lucky winner will win a choice of one of three quirky tees! To enter our future competitions join us on;; https://www.facebook.com/72M.Magazine.Home Happy reading!

The societies we live in, the Governments we choose, and the cultures we subscribe to have done much to encourage us to hand responsibility over to others. In handing responsibility over to others we are free to carry on with our everyday lives unbound from the ties of those responsibilities yet bound by the rules that manage them on our behalf. Who gets punished, where and how we live, what we wear, how we share our skills/knowledge/ experience, even what we are called… Thanks to countless reboots you may be familiar with the Stan Lee Spiderman quote “with great power there must also come - great responsibility”. If not, acquaint yourself. 72M, issue 11, aims to remind you of a source of power often neglected; you. Whether in business, life, love, art, or fashion you are the transmitter, the conduit and the receiver, powerful even in your choice not to engage. So read on, take responsibility and reclaim your power.

T

he power of reality television is undeniable. Even when the masses seemingly protested at the ever-reducing ‘quality’ of Big Brother, the authenticity of ‘X Factor’ or the ‘relevance’ of ‘Britain’s got Talent’, it seems their protests were not against reality TV in and of itself. The phenomenal popularity of shows like ITVs ‘The Big Reunion’ is testimony that the appetite for reality TV is insatiable. There is clearly power in blurring the lines between our personal realities and that of those we admire and/or chose to observe. We caught up with some of the stars of ‘The Big Reunion’, Célena Cherry, Mariama Goodman and Heavenli Denton of 90’s group the Honeyz to talk comebacks, life, motivation, and power! Why ‘The Big Reunion’ and who instigated it? CC - We were approached by ITV to do it and we thought why not! It gave us the opportunity to relive our biggest dream. MG - I heard from our old tour manager that ITV were looking for us, as soon as we heard what the project was we practically bit their hand off to be included HD - The Big Reunion was an unexpected opportunity that came our way. ITV contacted us and said that they were interested for us to participate in this show which was going to bring bands back together. We were all more than excited by the suggestion and luckily for us the whole programme not only came to fruition but became a great success. What were you individual expectations? CC - I was hoping to get closure and I think I achieved it. We had a lot of ups and downs during our time at the top that haunted me throughout my life. I just needed to do it one more time and this show fulfilled that passion. MG - I was just excited to be able to sing and perform again, I had no idea big reunion would get such a big response leading to an arena tour! HD - Initially I went into the whole programme of events, i.e. rehearsals, filming and the tour without really banking on anything else but the fabulous experience. I didn’t have any baggage to readdress; I have always looked back at the groups 90’s success with a sense of achievement.

seventy2minutes with:  The Honeyz It was set to be a unique, yet testing challenge and I therefore expected to learn from the Big Reunion and take away some new tools for life. As time has gone on the possibility that the Honeyz could make and release music again has come into the equation and we would be honoured to do so if the chance arose. What have you all been up to before TBR? How has life treated you? CC - I did a lot of song writing and got ordinary jobs, I worked at a gym and in a clothes shop, then I went into acting and decided to get back on the stage, did pantos and then starred in a Michael Jackson tribute show called MJ Timeless, which I loved. We still do it now. It’s called MJ eternity. Com MG - I went and trained to be a midwife, and I’ve been working as a midwife ever since (I still am!) HD - I have always believed that you should learn about your passions and if you’re lucky enough turn them into your work. With that in mind, shortly after the demise of the Honeyz, I successfully enrolled to go to Central Saint Martins, University of the Arts London to do a BA (Hons) Ceramic Design. It was such a creative place, loved it. I still work with clay today.

Life has treated me superbly, I feel incredibly blessed... I have a wonderful husband, who is a Head and a Director of Colegio Internacionale do Vilamoura and four beautiful children. We live on the Algarve, Portugal and adore it. I can’t say I have my health entirely as this year I was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis, which came as a shock, but I just see it as another challenge... and will be running the London Marathon 2014 for Arthritis Care to prove it! I’ve learnt that it is so important to raise awareness for this disease, as many people, including myself a year ago, have no idea about it. Life’s good, I’m very much a ‘the glass is half full’ type. What has the reception been like since TBR? CC - The reception has been amazing, I used to think we had no fans but they seem to have all come out of the woodwork! It’s great. MG - Everyone has been really positive and seems to be happy to see us again; the responses from the crowds in the arenas totally blew me away HD - The reception that the ladies and I received from the exposure of the Big Reunion has been overwhelming at times, to say the least. I genuinely didn’t expect people to remember

seventy2minutes with:  The Honeyz our songs that well, as we had a lot less success than most of the other groups on the show. It’s been such an amazingly positive time for us and that’s thanks to all the supporters of the show and those that love the nostalgia of listening to their favourite groups from yesteryear. Standing on stage at these arenas, singing our first song ‘Finally Found’ that we co-wrote and to have people singing along so loudly that you can’t hear, was out of this world; a memory that I’ll never forget. What lessons did you take away from the last time you were in the public eye as a group and what wisdom do you think you bring this time? CC - Last time round I had a great life, an amazing job and I just didn’t take it all in and appreciate it as much as I should have. This time we just embrace it for what it is and take it all in and enjoy! Cos it may not last forever. MG - The first time around there was so much pressure, we were ridiculously busy and never had time to appreciate what we were doing. This time I have made a conscious decision to take everything thing in and enjoy myself

HD - One important lesson that I learnt from the last time around is to take the time to look around, enjoy and cherish each moment that the process has brought along. Don’t get me wrong the journey through stages of the Big Reunion has been stressful, daunting, and tiring at times but now that I’m 40 next year I remind myself that the opportunities like this don’t come along every day and mustn’t be taken for granted. This time around with the Honeyz business affairs I’ve learnt not to take things at face value, I ask a lot more questions now. I’m certainly more confident and astute than I was in my twenties. What do you have planned for the future? CC - Honeyz are recording an album, hopefully out next year, and I am continuing to song-write. I want to go to college and do a counselling course so I’m looking forward to that and penning lots of hits, as well as continuing with MJ Eternity doing our Michael Jackson shows. MG - I am still working as a midwife, but the girls and I have been writing and recording so fingers crossed for that too

seventy2minutes with:  The Honeyz HD - As a group, if the chance came to release more music together, we would jump at it. We have recorded some great new tracks. Personally I feel that as a group we are the strongest that we’ve ever been but there are a lot of other factors to take into consideration in the music business. We are excited about being a part of the Big Reunion Christmas single for Text Santa but before that we have the Christmas Arena tour in December. It’s going to be a fantastic Christmas! In keeping with issue 11's theme on power we asked the Honeyz for their views about the music industry and power; Do you think the power of the girl group has waned or sustained? CC - I think it’s sustained, if you get the right formula it works. HD - I truly believe that if a group ...girl, boy or mixed is good enough it will stand out, shine and succeed. Little Mix are doing really well in the States, so all hail the girl groups, I say!!! There was a time when there were a lot more though.... EnVogue, TLC, SWV, Brownstone, Destiny’s Child....yes... maybe the power has waned a little but I’m sure there will be resurgence. More girl groups are on their way, there is a good one on X 12

seventy2minutes.com  October 2013

Factor at the moment, oh!, and there’s us. Eternal are rumoured to be doing the next Big Reunion, so that’s three more at least. The power of a girl group depends on a combination of attributes...ability, drive, willingness, image, direction, togetherness, social media and luck to name a few. If you have a girl band that has all these boxes ticked then I’m sure you must be on your way! Which do you think is the most powerful driving force in your industry; experience or naivety? CC - Both, experience gives you wisdom, which could help you move forward and naivety keeps you focused as you don’t yet see the downsides. If I had to choose it would be naivety. HD - Wow, what a question.... well if I’m to be honest I would say naivety. If you look at the age of most of the artists in the music industry, they are young and therefore naturally don’t have much experience. The more established a group or artist is obviously the more clued up one would become. Nowadays there seems to be a very fast turnover rate, new artists are launched from the same shows on a yearly basis, therefore they are only given a short time to learn the ins and outs.

seventy2minutes with:  The Honeyz I think perhaps some shows rely on the hopefuls for the music industry to have a lack of experience or understanding so that they can be moulded much more easily into whatever the record/production company want. Experience is gained along the way, but if the way is such a short one there’s not much chance to understand. Music has its very own power. What do you hope to use the power of the music you make for? CC - I think music is so powerful. It’s a healer it’s a problem solver it’s used to create special and sad moments in life, it can help one to express their self fully. I hope the music I make can touch people and be a healer, be people’s medicine, be a positive thing in people’s lives, that’s all I would like..

heals is the power that is positive. Music is ever so a powerful tool that we all relate to it in our own unique ways yet also a medium that brings people together. Proof of this... the Big Reunion tour has brought thousands of people together for a happy, nostalgic couple of hours each evening and was a great ‘sold-out’ success. We have had people come to us and say they played ‘Finally ‘Found’ or ‘End of the Line’ at weddings and funerals. I feel proud that we have written and sung music that has helped to soothe, or helped to celebrate such amazing moments; if Honeyz music can continue to do just that then job done!

HD - The power in music that reaches, touches, comforts, encourages, inspires and

ou know her as Avril Powell in ‘Shameless’ yet Karen Bryson has over 90 screen appearances, across 27 productions, to her name. Born in North West London and hailed as ‘one of the UK’s leading Black actresses’ we spoke to her about power and what it means to her. The issue of ‘power’ is a tricky one, as it is often seen as negative, we think of dictators, politicians or ego maniacs!! I ‘Power’ by its very definition means the ability, or right, to control or influence people or things. I like to use the term ‘ empower’, whether it be to empower oneself or others. Everyone is powerful... It’s a case of realising that power, being unafraid and utilizing it! Throughout my life, I have generally felt powerful after conquering fear.. One of the times that comes to mind, was my first job back from a horrible injury. I had just re learned to walk after a tibial plateau fracture, where I was on crutches for 8 months. It was a high octane, physical, production of Macbeth at Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre in London. What was I thinking right? I was low in confidence and very nervous. But I jumped into the project feet first (pun intended!) The Globe, as a playing space is magical, but very hard to master vocally and physically, as it has vertical tiered seating with a 300 degree surround, notwithstanding the ‘groundlings’ section (a large standing section at the front of the stage). In order to have an impact, you have to scoop the audience up... And hold them. During rehearsals, I had an absolute crisis of confidence. After rehearsal I would get onto the stage on my own, to start to feel more confident about the space and it’s ‘God’ spots…(Areas of the stage where you can be seen by the entire audience.) My first entrance was through the ‘groundlings’, stepping up onto the front of the stage. First night, I was terrified like I’ve never known. As I walked through the audience, I couldn’t remember my first line, I began to panic. The minute I stepped onto the stage and turned to face the audience.... absolute silence. I then realised I had the entire theatre in the palm of my hand. It’s difficult to explain but, I felt so powerful. Weeks of self-doubt and fear, instantly evaporated in that moment. I believe this feeling of power fed into my recovery as well as myself worth as an actor. My very next job was Shameless UK.... I really don’t want this to sound like a ‘stock’ answer but, I used to often feel powerless when it came to greater ‘world/social’ issues. war, poverty, homelessness, the environment etc.. The list goes on. Then I realized I have the power to influence change by starting with the “Man in the mirror”. By doing something small at every opportunity, Whether it’s to sign a petition, recycling, volunteering at Christmas to help the homeless, supporting anti knife crime or merely encouraging others to do similar. The power of the individual has proved through time to be extremely.... Powerful!   October 2013  seventy2minutes.com

Star Power with Lindsay Armaou

L

indsay Armaou, former member of girl group B*witched and now a singer, songwriter, and actress.

For me power is not about being in control but about letting go of control, and feeling strong and secure within that. Being able to deal with anything that gets thrown at you because you have an inner strength and stillness - that’s power. When I went to drama college for two years I learned to let go of fears, inhibitions and selflimitations that held me back in the past. I felt powerful in doing that. When I am true to myself and comfortable within my own skin I can feel powerful in any situation. I’m not trying to be something I’m not, nor am I caring too much about what people think of me. It’s liberating. I felt powerless when my Mum was ill with cancer. In situations when a loved one is suffering in some way it is hard not to. You just want to be able to cure them but you can’t. All you can do is be there and support.

T

he smokey eye is the most popular eye look ever. Not a day goes by in magazines, Tv, on the street that a lady is not sporting this look.

Creating this look is super easy but there are tips to keep it classy and not a case of people asking if you have a blackeye.

It’s a look that never goes out of style, a classic look that oozes glam, sexiness and sophistication...

Tips for achieving the smokey eye – • For longeivity also start with base like Mac Cosmetics Paint point in Constrivitist. It’s a Beautiful Metallic brown. This product will not bulge for over 8 hours • Quickest method is with an eye kohl or paint stick. Apply this all over the lid under the crease and using a small fluffy brush blend out any harsh lines gradually into the crease • Black is not a compulsory colour for smokey eyes. Also try other colours like a deep emerald green, dark blues, dark warm browns. These look beautiful on dark skins. • To pull off an amazing smokey eye effect, a flawles skin is essential conceal any imperfections and blend your foundation flawlessly • Make eyes pop by paring with a nude lip, try Bobbi Brown Lip stick in Uber rose £19 • More daring? Pair with a rich red lipstick like Sleek True colour lipstick in in Russian Roulette £4.99 for a va va voom effect • Still daring? Pat on a clear gloss just at the middle of the lips for a power pout. Photography - Arron Dunworth Makeup - Joy Adenuga Model - Janita Francis

fashion & beauty ‘This ‘stuff’? Oh, ok. I see, you think this has nothing to do with you. (…) You select out…that lumpy blue sweater…because you’re trying to tell the world that you take yourself too seriously to care about what you put on your back. But…that sweater is not just blue…it’s actually cerulean. You’re also blindly unaware of the fact that in 2002, Oscar de la Renta did a collection of cerulean gowns (…) then cerulean quickly showed up in the collections of eight different designers…it filtered down through the department stores….trickled on down into some tragic “casual corner” where you, no doubt, fished it out of some clearance bin…That blue represents millions of dollars and countless jobs and so it’s sort of comical how you think that you’ve made a choice that exempts you from the fashion industry when, in fact, you’re wearing the sweater that was selected for you by the people in this room. From a pile of ‘stuff’.”* * *Meryl Streep’s monologue as Miranda Priestly in The Devil Wears Prada - (20th Century Fox, 2006).

a pile of stuff? Katherine Pegka www. styleidoscope.com

Fashion has nothing to do with you? Too busy/practical/highbrow to care? Right. Fashion impacts society and vice versa. Ever since Eve’s invention of the topless fig leaf bikini, the clothes people throw on reflect the world around them: the evolution, the culture, the historical milestones. From rib fracturing corsets, swinging petticoats and larger-than-life shoulder pads to destroyed and acid washed jeans, they are all part of human History and, inevitably, of our daily lives.

I

admit, I often drool over the trendsetting outfits of the Alexa Chungs, Olivia Palermos and Chiara Ferragnis of the world, but still, there is no one and nothing that can or will ever live up to the all-time classic legendary style of: Marlene, Sophia, Marilyn, Helen, Brigit…Audrey, Faye... And this exactly is the spirit of the smart and artful fashion label Treacherous Minx. They were kind enough to send me their ICON tee and I could not help but smirk when I unpacked it. The power of these printed names is magical and indisputable…If you are a female over 18 and still wondering what the tee is all about, then you ‘ve either lived under a stone the past years or you have a problem with the obvious. Or both. Any attempts to explain would be like trying to prove that you’re not an elephant. Launched in 2009 by Yvonne Podlewski, Treacherous Minx is an art-driven label that puts out a capsule collection of t-shirts each season. Each Series of t-shirts is designed around a particular theme, inspired by thrift stores, vintage record covers, art house films and dusty bookstores. All t-shirts are made in Los Angeles and 100% of the softest cotton you could imagine. This lovely ICON tee is part of the “Bedtime Stories” collection: playful, with modern cuts and styles with hints of 60s glamour. As I browsed through their collections I began to think how much femininity and body image awareness has changed over the past years. I am not going to start playing the “…everything was way better back in the days…” record. I just wish women would be more straightforward with their femininity. Or, to put it in Marilyn’s words: “I am very definitely a woman and I enjoy it”-.

before My name is Yvonne and I have a varied background. I’m married with a two year old son. I have a B.A. in history from UCLA also an M.A .in Film Studies from Cal State LA. I’ve had so many different jobs I’ve lost count, but throughout I was, and still am, compiling the odd assortment of vintage clothes, records, films, VHS tapes, dvd s, film stills, posters, etc. The common thread was the era -1960’s to 1970’s. I came up with the name Treacherous Minx as an umbrella for all the creative things I want to do with my archives. My ultimate goal is to expand the brand to include media. For example, publish a series of reference books for fashion lovers, as well as produce short videos focusing on other aspects such as fashion history, textiles, and trends emerging in new markets.

challenges, opportunities and lessons I’ve learned... the brand The core vision of the brand now is to put a smart and modern spin on the vintage visuals I adore. I enjoy some kitsch, but it’s the really sexy imagery I’m obsessed with. The other part of this equation is to pair these graphics with a beautifully produced t-shirt, sewn on the nicest cotton available. I don’t just want to slap a logo on something. I really want it to look and feel special. The brand is for anybody who can appreciate this! I launched the brand in 2009 and it’s only job I’ve had where I not only had to pay to start doing, but haven’t been bored.

I was really timid when I started the company. So embarrassed to show anyone what I was up to. I thought I had to have a heavy fashion background in order to be considered legitimate. I wasted a lot of money and resources making moves that were small and had no impact or resonance. I think this kind of thinking really held me back, so my advice would be to any one who wants to start something is to get out there and make bold, direct moves and have a point of view that is yours. The successes I’ve had have all come from putting myself out there at local shows, and connecting with designers, bloggers and other brand owners who are much more successful than myself. Also, having a network like this to ask advice gives me the confidence to speak with customers and buyers.

I’m still eager to learn as much as I can about silkscreen, design, fabric, garment dyeing, and anything else that will enhance my brand. Currently, I am working on new images for Spring/ Summer ’14 as well as adding slinky blank tees in sumptuous fabrics to the mix.

In this issue the Alex Experience examines the alchemy of transforming thought, information, and knowledge, to bring forth the gold of freedom.

For each edition of 72M I write this article and so I think before and as I compose each one and in turn for those that read, you read my thoughts. But what do you think? Not about what I have at any time written here, but what do you really think? Even more so, how do you think? Deductively? Imaginatively? Naively? Fantastically? Empirically? Rationally? Do we in fact ever think our own thoughts? And if so on what do we base them? Western culture is at constant attempts to polarize us into ‘thinkers’ and ‘feelers’. Those who act upon their mindset and those who are motivated by their ‘heart’, and as I have written here before wherever there is division you will find someone seeking to rule; a seeker of power. This is and always has been done with one simple tool; information. Perhaps centuries ago, perhaps not so long in present day parts of the world, the dissident could expect to be summarily executed for standing counter to the powerful, the dictators of information, the bringers of the ‘word’, the prophets of the mighty, but it was the information of these deeds transferred to others and its corralling effect that is their only real power. A dark power that goes by an infamous byword; fear. Now, as I often do in these articles I could at this point refer to a quote by say, Mark Twain that distinguishes between being uninformed and misinformed, or to the opening sequence of cult TV series The Prisoner, where the disembodied authoritarian voice of Number 2 repetitively recites the word ‘information’, or maybe that’s ‘in formation’, in response to Patrick McGoohan’s question “What is that you want?”. But would these not also be examples of the thinking of others? Where they may be well intended guidance perhaps they are nonetheless external and antithetical to a path to freedom. With a little assistance from a very recent decision to engage in a media ‘fast’, (that’s as little exposure to all kinds of media as possible for a month), I have discovered that when you unplug from these distractions, distractions of you from you, a realization occurs, a realization that it’s bullshit; all of it.

the alex experience

Bullshit presented as hearsay, preoccupation and sideshow. Bullshit as gossip weeklies, as pop star idiosyncrasies, as sports results, as blockbuster movies. Bullshit as the fake promises of political stooges, the studio actors in suits sat behind desks selling ‘rolling news’, or in white lab coats selling chemicals masked as ‘cosmetics’. Bullshit as market activity, corporate takeover, and profit margin. Bullshit as statute, treaty and trade agreement. Bullshit as bloodline, hierarchy and royalty. Bullshit as secrecy, security and terror. Bullshit as mass, baptism, benediction, circumcision, prophecies and rituals. Bullshit as money, society and culture. Of course, this is my perception, my perspective, based upon my experience, my consideration, my thinking and it is not without knowing or irony that I communicate this to you via media in what is increasingly referred to as the Information Age. Nor am I advocating here the hermitic life to anyone, but I am determined that whenever cultural influences are transmitted to you sufficiently intact such that your thoughts are no longer your own, then you are being herded to an enclosure not released to any kind of freedom. I would invite you only to begin to look around with different eyes, listen to what you are being told with new ears. Can what is being claimed be substantiated by reasoning, or by your own experiences or investigations? If not why does it matter to you? Take note of the other connations of that word; matter. If you find you are being presented with or programmed to accept information without question or evidence because you are ‘no expert’, are ‘unqualified’ or might be branded a ‘hater’, maybe you might begin to wonder who stands to gain from you being so easily swept aside, and whether the infinite creative power of your consciousness is being coerced to alternate ends. You might also begin to examine the advocates and messengers of information. Who are they? What interests do they represent and to whom are they’re genuine allegiances owed? All the time you assuage yourself of the desires of your heart in combination with the responsibilities of your mind, however large they are, in preference to the achievements or aims of others you allow the ongoing manufacture of consent for truly horrendous and evil things to be done in the name of the illusion of your ‘culture’ and ‘way of life’. By this path is power mongered, are slaves shackled and is freedom slowly choked of breath.

Mind your

earch engine optimization, or SEO, is the process in which you arrange your site to get a higher search engine ranking, thus making it possible for more people to find your site. There are many things you can do to optimize your site for more exposure via the search engines. There are also many you should not do because you and your site could be penalized.

Business

Accurate and efficient SEO is critical as most sites are found via search engines. Search engines have evolved and are now much more selective in what they look for in a site. Your site SEO must adapt to this evolution to maintain your rankings. While SEO methods can get complex and confusing, there are some basic things you can do to improve your chances of showing up in the search engines. By integrating the right optimizations into your site, whilst making note of what not to do, your rankings and traffic should increase.

Clear Ways to Help People find your Website Keywords Many professionals will tell you that keywords are one of the most important factors in successful SEO. When choosing keywords you need to zero in on your business as much as possible. For example: if you sell jewelry, using the word jewelry will more than likely not be enough. You need to target your products in more detail. What kind of jewelry do you sell? What attracts people to your jewelry? What would you search for when searching for jewelry? You can find out what keywords people use the most when searching for products by using Google’s keyword suggestion tool.

Quality Content The search engine spiders are always looking for quality content on the websites they index. Don’t make your site a giant advertisement. Provide tips, information, or resources pertaining to your business. If you own a home décor site, provide decorating tips that save money etc. DO NOT let your content go stale. You must add new information on a regular basis. This is critical to your SEO success.

Quality Links

DO NOT be too repetitive in your use of keywords. This is called keyword stuffing and is very much frowned upon by Getting other quality, high-ranked sites to link to your the search engines. Use a Keyword Density Tool to make site can be substantial for your rankings. Always link to sites that will be helpful and beneficial to your visitors and sure you have not overused your keywords. to you. Find high ranked authority sites and contact the webmaster. Offer to place their link on your site if they do Page Titles the same for you. Page titles are important for your SEO because they let the search engine spiders know what the page is about and in DO NOT link to junk or spam sites just to get more doing so make your webpage easier to index. When writing backlinks. Ask yourself if you would find the site helpful. a spider-friendly title it all comes back to keywords. Choose Would you visit this site or spend any time on it? Does it some of your most effective keywords but be sure the title actually provide any useful information or content? If not, makes sense to human eyes and reads clearly. For example: don’t chance damaging your reputation by linking to it. jewelry diamonds, rubies, emeralds, rings, bracelets and more, is not a title but a string of keywords. DO NOT make your title more than 70 characters because the excess will not show up in the search engines. You will then get one of these ………. which does nothing to get people to click on your page. 28

seventy2minutes.com  October 2013

Image Alt Attribute Search engine spiders cannot read images so be sure to use alt attribute to add keyword rich image descriptions.

health, wealth & wisdom DO NOT make your image description too long. A few words are usually sufficient but you could use a short sentence or two if appropriate.

Clean, Clear & Concise Make sure your site is clean, easy to use and read. Have you ever been to a site that just takes you round and round and you never seem to find what you’re looking for? I call them merry-go-rounds and leave as quickly as possible. To me, they are about the worst kind of site. Be sure your site provides clear and concise navigation to all your products, content and other aspects of your site. Provide links to all your pages organized in a user-friendly way. Keep your site clean and clear of too many ads, clutter and junk. DO NOT load your site with flash or frames. Both of these can cause problems for the search engines.

SIte Map A site map will help make your site much easier to read for the search engine spiders and your human visitors. A site map is simply a page that lists and links to some or all of the pages of your website. Using an XML site map will make it much easier and effective for the search engines. DO NOT put too many links on your site map. This could confuse the spiders and they might mistake you for a link farm. Stay within a 25 – 40 link range.

Broken Links If you have excessive dead or broken links on your site the search engines will consider your site to be a poor quality site and it will affect your ranking. If you have a lot of external links on your site, be sure to check them regularly. Sites do die out and the links are no longer valid so you want to make sure you check them often. DO NOT underestimate the impact of broken links. If you let them go unchecked and amass too many of them your site will suffer.

Don’t be intimidated by search engine optimization. There are many small things you can do that will make a big difference in your search engine ranking. Take some time to learn how to do these not so complicated steps and watch your site start rising to the top! Don’t be one of the statistics who fail at their online business. Social Networking The astronomical rise of social media has had a huge impact on SEO. Be sure to get involved in social media and link to all your social sites via your website. Be sure they are all connected. My favorites are Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest. Get on over to those sites and get connected! DO NOT join too many social sites. Find a few that work well for you and focus on participation and building your brand.

Page Seed The speed at which a webpage loads is not the most important factor in your site ranking but making the speed the most efficient it can be will be well worth the time. Many visitors will leave a webpage in about 10 seconds or less if it does not load. Clean up your pages as much as possible. Make excessively long pages into two or more shorter pages. Reduce the size of your images. Fortunately there are many things you can do to improve your page spee. DO NOT load up your site with special effects, flashy lights and other unnecessary clutter. You want your site to look sharp and professional, not like the Vegas strip.   October 2013  seventy2minutes.com

Transform, how you live your Life

W

e all know that there is no such thing as balance in the life of a working woman! Right? It’s all about compromise, shifting priorities and making choices. For many working women our very busyness has meant that we have no inner balance (who has time for that?), we aren’t visible and valued at work (too busy in the background to put ourselves forward) and we aren’t in control of our lives (success is getting to the end of the day without a major disaster!) Even young career women who aren’t mothers may start to feel their power diminishing as each day passes, and they are dealing with negative comments and seeing their male colleagues being promoted over them. Whatever your situation, you have to remember that you DO possess an authentic power which, for a variety of reasons, you might not be accessing. The issue is not about changing the circumstances of your life (maybe we have a baby, maybe sick parents and maybe we like our job actually) even if you could do that. You have total control over how you LIVE the circumstances of your life. We have to be able to access our inner power to bring to all the aspects of our lives.

30

seventy2minutes.com  October 2013

10 things you can do today to start to access that inner power:

1. Don’t agree to everything you are asked to do. You can always say “Let me think about that” while you work out what you are going to say to refuse! 2. Stop saying the word ‘sorry’ unless you really mean it 3. Look at what you CAN do not what you can’t do 4. Write out on a post it note “not everything worth doing is worth doing well” and stick it up where you can see it regularly! 5. Stop yourself talking about your weaknesses 6. Tell at least two people at work this week about something great you have done 7. Write down 10 things you like about yourself and read that list last thing at night and first thing in the morning 8. Write down all the things you have achieved in your life that you are proud of and look at it whenever you doubt yourself 9. Smile when you hear or sense that someone doesn’t like you - and like yourself more to compensate 10. Anytime you feel guilty about not doing something exactly right tell yourself “I am doing the best that I can and it’s good enough” Geraldine has spent 27 years working in the areas of women’s development, diversity and spirituality. ong lyrics have no relevance to what I’m about to write about, I just like them and it’s always a good idea to have a head line that grabs the attention in your article. And grabbing attention is something the media has been doing more and more of in the past few years to the extent that, instead of it being about knowledge, nowadays it’s the media that has all the power. Think of your least favourite celebrities, it’s not for me to name them, the 72m lawyers would break into a cold sweat at the mere thought, but we’ll all have our ideas as to who we like and who we dislike. Have we met them? In 90 per cent of cases, it’s unlikely and yet we still form our opinions. But what’s it based on? Well positive or negative,

the show’s popularity was on the wane, but my news editor disagreed and as we were heavily promoting one of the stars of this show on air, I was instructed to head back out onto the streets with the microphone until I’d found enough people who were happy to sing its praises. If you don’t believe that the media has all the power, just look at our favourite TV shows. Some are favourites due to the quality of the production, some because they are flavours of the month, but I’d bet the majority maintain their popularity due to a daily piece of publicity being drip fed by those shows PR staff to the media. It’s the same deal with our pop stars, try reading a tabloid without seeing a picture of Rihanna for instance, and this

The power of love is a curious thing

make a one man weep Make another man sing. it’ll be based on how they are portrayed in the media. I’ve mentioned before how our favourite sports stars don’t choose to be role models, but are elevated to that pedestal by a media that’s oh so keen to build them up, and then oh so keen to knock them down again. The stars may earn their millions, but it’s the media that has the power to damage their reputations and therefore earning potential with one photo or article. Believe all you read in the papers? You’d be wise to treat what you read with a pinch of salt, each media outlet has an agenda and you’d be amazed at the number of deals that take place behind the scenes to either keep bad news out of a paper or off the air, or push forward positive news to perhaps restore a damaged reputation, often at the whim of that media organisation. In my broadcasting days I had to put together a news story on our audience’s attitudes at the time to a certain reality TV show so I went out into the streets, armed with a microphone, and posed the question to the public of what their views were on this programme. The majority were negative, so I wrote a script implying that 34

has never been so apparent as in the 21st Century where another form of media, social, is allowing easy and regular news stories for papers and magazines who without any contact with the celebrities can grab content for their pages just by following them on Twitter or Instagram. I’ve been extremely lucky to have made a career in the media, it’s had its highs and lows and I hope the story for me still has plenty of chapters to come in the future. In fact I really couldn’t see myself doing anything for a living that doesn’t in some way revolve around that ‘m’ word. But I’m also aware, finally, of what a cruel mistress she can be and how her power can affect those within her industry. Many of my friends have worked in it and shared my passion, before being cast aside as it evolved around them, sometimes at a breakneck speed. So whilst my love affair with the media has lasted for most of my adult life, I’m aware that it’s a relationship where the power is all on one side, and it’s certainly not on mine.

ell, depending on where you look, the definition can range anywhere from electrical energy to the ability to change the outcome of a situation. For the purposes of this article, electrical energy, however useful and life changing, is too scientific a definition for the word “power” A quick foray into the world of Google throws up a whole gamut of possibilities along with countless quotes related to the word, the majority of which seem to point towards power being the ability that someone assumes or seizes in order to direct or manipulate the actions of others. A large percentage of search results seem to make an almost unbreakable link between power and money. It is as though one cannot exist without the other. Many of the most “powerful” men and women in the world are extremely wealthy. Now, whether being powerful allowed them to amass their wealth, or the wealth imbued them with power is open to debate. The fact remains that one of the primary measures of an individual’s “power” does appear, rightly or wrongly, to be his wealth. I say “his” wealth because my trawl through the world of Google to find the meaning of “power” also threw up some interesting and, often, polarising debates as to whether men are naturally more powerful than women. I will refrain from revealing my own personal opinion on this divisive subject for fear of being accused of showing some kind of reprehensible bias! But, I digress!

Dave Calcutt The search for the true meaning of power then takes another turn. Is power a positive force that “good” people should strive for or is it inherently an evil force that corrupts those who strive for or achieve it? Here again, Google offers opposing views from a variety of people. Two of the more eloquent quotes that I was able to find are as follows…. The English poet Percy Shelley appears to have had a somewhat negative take on power when he claimed.. “Power, like a desolating pestilence, pollutes whatever it touches.” Whereas the 19th century British politician, Benjamin Disraeli is a shade more optimistic “Power has only one duty --to secure the social welfare of the People.” My own personal view would have to be that power is a set of circumstances, be they financial or otherwise, that allow an individual or group of people to have either a positive or negative effect on the lives of others. That having been said, it could be argued that real power is measured by the way in which a “powerful” person uses their power. To that end, my rummaging through Google unearthed the following wise words from that 19th century poster boy for the stovepipe hat industry, Abe Lincoln “Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man’s character, give him power.” With deference to the power of the sexual equality movement, maybe that should have read “Nearly all people can stand adversity, but if you want to test a person’s character, give them power”. Unless, of course, as some would have us believe, men are most likely to be in positions of power. But that’s a whole different can of worms.   October 2013  seventy2minutes.com

hen I was first asked by my editor to write about “power”, for a brief moment I had no clue what to write about, but almost instantly I realized that art is power. I could talk about the power of advertising and its historic use of art, the rich and powerful clamoring to acquire the most expensive art pieces in the world, art being gifted to CEO’s and presidents or the history of invading armies ransacking artistic treasures (The armies of Great Britain, France, Germany, Japan, USA, Russia etc), but what I will write about the power of art and its effect on popular culture. You maybe recall a previous article I wrote about the artist 281 Anti Nuke, who just held his second solo exhibition at the Foreign Correspondents Club Japan, where hundreds of Journalists have seen his work, having features coming out about him in The Guardian, The New Yorker and Asahi. You maybe recall my admiration for this artist and you may know that I work with him and it could seem like I’m finding an excuse to plug him. But this could not be further from the truth. There is another artist called Ian Thomas Ash, who I’d like you to pay attention to and will be relevant to this article. Ian is a documentary filmmaker based in Japan, who recently won some awards for his work. His documentary focuses on the children in Date City, located in Fukushima.

Documentaries and films are art in themselves, but when it comes to power to affect change, its documentaries, which lead the way. You only need to look at Super Size Me, to see the effect on one of the largest companies in the world who happen to be one of the biggest contributors to global warming and the continues declines of the people’s health. Ian and 281 share a similar goal, to educate the population of Japan and the world at large about the Fukushima. One of 281’s works “Care your food” which you can see, shows a child eating something contaminated with radiation. While Ian’s documentary shows how concerned parents are of contaminated food, while the Japanese government and prefecture claim the food is safe, you have fields that are so radioactive that there is no possible way this can be called safe. Schools have been decontaminated, while the fields, streams, woods and animals outside of the schools or outside of the housing (less than 1ft away in many cases) are so contaminated that children are not allowed to play in them and have been told by the Gov. to not touch any plants or animals. One of the women in this documentary says, and I’m adlibbing here “The government is making us part of a crime, where people buy our produce to support us, but tell the people it’s not contaminated”. If you look at the Stanford experiments you will see how much trust we place in institution. So having Government officials, Doctors, schools and hospitals all telling you everything is OK, when they then tell you to not touch

am velenia essuscidam velenia essuscid

discover anything outside of your home, or say the mountains will can never be cleaned (where streams form, creating rivers and enter the sea), then it’s time for people to speak out, but how.

When a revolution is forming, it needs a symbol, that symbol was created by someone and by any definition, it’s art. The America Flag was created as a symbol, something to rally behind. As was the British flag and so many others.

This is where artists such as 281 and documentarians such as Ian, are so dedicated to the public being told the truth or asking them to think for themselves, that they put themselves at great risk.

When a mass population rallies behind the same symbol/ flag, change is possible.

It concerns me, that in Ian’s documentary, he’s asked to leave school grounds as he’s not asked permission to film and this is more dire than children playing next to a a radioactive field. What will happen next spring when plants release their pollen? (It takes 3 years for radiation to seep down to a layer where it’s absorbed through the roots and then into the pollen which the wind spreads). Why is 281 Anti Nuke described as a terrorist, yet the Japanese Government claims Fukushima is safe to visit for tourists, yet tells the population not to touch any animals or plant life.

281’s work has been used in demonstrations in Japan, Germany, South America, USA and the UK. While 281’s works will make you think, Ian’s will make you think even more and maybe, just maybe these two artists will be remembered in years to come as change makers. Personally, I hope this is the case.

For more visit; http://www.a2documentary.com www.281antinuke.com

It’s not the first time a government has lied and it won’t be the last I’m sure. Art is a vehicle to affect change.

I

write this installment admiring the view of a very different Boulevard, half-a-world away on Petchburi Boulevard in Bangkok. Perched atop the Amari Watergate Hotel daydreaming over Thailand’s balmy horizon, its stunning Executive Floor is a fitting location to recap a summer full of exciting escapades, prior to hitting Vietnam for the world premiere of Âm Muu Giày Gót Nhon (How To Fight in Six Inch Heels). Summer in LA unofficially begins on the 4th July Independence Day. A national day off, most hit the beach, a BBQ, or both. A night at the bingo may just be the polar opposite. Nonetheless we were lured to Hamburger Mary’s in West Hollywood for their legendary Drag Queen Bingo, where you’ll find dude in a dress and a celebrity handling the balls amidst a raucous crowd, aiding a local cause - this time for Brit filmmaker Craig Young’s project, Pepper, a tale of a curious young boy that befriends a female impersonator. Later that week, I breezed through the launch party for film company Beneficial Entertainment & Hyperion, before shooting south to Temecula for the Lightning In A Bottle festival. Viewed as a Burning Man’s baby brother, it offers music, art, speakers and spirituality. It’s interesting and obscure, but having lost my festival virginity to the British behemoth that is Glastonbury, it was a little too eclectic and uneventful for its parkland confines to exceed a day of my attention, but if new band discovery and neon sculpture is your thing, it’s worthwhile. Further south in San Diego, Comic Con followed hot on its heels, and is one of my favourite world events - a definite fixture on the calendar. Annually, the huge oceanfront convention centre becomes a kaleidoscope of Cosplay, with fantasy film and comic fans in abundance dressed as their animated idols. In the last few years, focus shifted to include popular TV and Film - it’s a place where fans can meet the stars, hear breaking news and panels, buy merchandise and party hard. My exhausting schedule began at the Wired Cafe, a hotel rooftop transformed courtesy of Wired Magazine into a VIP hospitality suite, showcasing new film, games and tech. A free flowing bar and other fun, such as superhero caricatures, helped the who’s who of invited media personalities get acquainted. I beat the zombies in the Walking Dead Escape, a pop-up attraction that infected the massive Petco Stadium with obstacles and settings from the cult TV show, where punters could opt to pursue survival as a runner, or become the undead with make-up and

costume by Greg Nicotero’s team. Victorious and disease-free, I walked the plank to the Black Sails premiere, a new pirate TV drama starring British friend Hakeem Kae-Kazim who does a great job; then journeyed to the exclusive Kings of Con event, partying alongside George RR Martin, the Game Of Thrones creator who bears a striking resemblance to the lighthouse keeper in Fraggle Rock. I party-hopped through Kickass 2 / Playboy’s collaboration, to the Walking Dead event where Weezer held court with a fun live show. I squeezed in a pre-release segment of Clooney & Bullock’s space thriller Gravity in a custom cinema, and hobnobbed with producers of Oblivion at Radical Studios’ event at Ploom. Since ‘party karma’ dictates that if you enjoy, you should provide, I also hosted a fantastic bash for our upcoming film The Darkness Descending at Vin de Syrah. Our star Danny Trejo (Machete Kills) welcomed VIP fans lucky enough to attend the elusive underground venue, by following social media clues to help the local homeless community, as the film is set in New York’s subterranean world of those living on the street. Guests had drinks amongst the cast and crew, tried the interactive app by Scriball, and watched live as acclaimed street artist Gregory Siff painted a portrait of Danny Trejo which was later auctioned for homeless youth charity Hollywood Arts. A great time, charities helped, and good awareness for the film thanks to the excellent PR efforts of AMB Publicity. The party weekend continued with epic burgers at San Diego staple Hodad’s and a bizarre and absolutely bonkers live show by Adult Swim’s Eric Andre. August began with Brits In LA hosting a traditional British Summer Fete at Palihouse to wet the Royal Baby’s head, complete with crust-free cucumber sandwiches, a tombola and fancy dress competition, which numerous American guests mistook for dressing fancy. I later brunched with British actresspopstar Karen David whose catchy EP Daydreaming just released. She clearly rubbed off some musical good luck, as my audition immediately afterwards at Warner Bros for sitcom 2 Broke Girls to play a British Rock Star proved fruitful (despite me thinking it went terrible!). I got to pop my sitcom virginity working alongside Stifler’s Mom - the awesome Jennifer Coolidge, under direction of Burt Wonderstone’s Don Scardino and Sex and The City’s Michael Patrick King in front of a live studio audience. Catch it on the first episode of Season 3. The week ended nicely with our film The Darkness Descending picking up three

brit on the boulevard awards at the AOF Festival, scheduled for a February release. September was no quieter, with opening parties at Brit-themed nightclub Hooray Henry’s, Sunset Strip’s newest rooftop hotspot. I quaffed martinis and tacos at Billy Zane’s art opening, watched The Frozen Ground starring Vanessa Hudgens, with Vanessa and friends in the actual audience, and traveled north to Solvang, a charming Danish-themed town where we stayed at the Frederick Inn, ate Æbleskiver, then were hosted by the friendly personnel at Vandenberg Air Force Base to watch the world’s largest rocket launch of the Delta IV Heavy. Surprisingly quiet, due to its Eco-fuel, this “national s e c u r i t y payload” was impressive to see, although the closest viewpoint is still 4 miles safely away. This novel activity also inspired the “launch” of a new website by Mary and I - He Scores She Scores where we’ll inspire the Neophile in you to go out and play.... Back in LA, locals favorite Cinespia at The Hollywood Forever Cemetery projected cult 80’s flick The Breakfast Club amidst late celebrities, complete with music from the era and themed photo opp. From famous graves to gravely famous, we sat with hip hop mogul Russell Simmons and supermodel Hana Nitsche at the annual Brent Shapiro Foundation Gala, held by renowned lawyer Robert Shapiro in honor of his son who passed from drug and alcohol overdose. Anything but clean, Cinemax TV show The Girl’s Guide to Depravity launched its Season 2 with an elegant soirée thrown by Go Moment who special in unforgettable events. Star Rebecca Blumhagen jetted from New York to join LA based cast members Christina Collard, Joe Komara, Chasty Ballesteros, and director Alex Merkin. The next evening, an array of TV and film names gathered on stage under Rudolf Buitendach’s profound direction to commemorate

9/11 with staged readings of true survivors accounts in 110 Stories, fantastically delivered with emotion, intensity and a powerful, multi-personal perspective. Manipulating people and perspectives is Brit artist Emma Ferreira’s skill and it was a pleasure to attend her opening of TROMI at Gallerie Sparta, an exhibition which featured a 7ft likeness of my girlfriend, model Mary Tran, sold at a price which made me realize I really can’t afford her! I stopped by another gallery for Rankin, Brits in LA and Heifer’s collaborative competition, which opened the same night as Be Great Fest, an event celebrating numerous tech startup successes born out of an LA and San Fran incubator. I rounded off the month, testing out tech at Newport Beach. The JetLev experience turns you into a real-life Sunday superhero, by strapping you into a chair powered by high pressure water jets, allowing you to fly over the ocean at decent heights, an extremely unique, fun but exhausting activity, so a beachfront room at the Pacific Edge Hotel was the perfect way to chill and watch the final episodes of the best TV show ever to grace the screens...Breaking Bad. September went out with a 1920’s bang. The fantastic Face Forward Gala (for which I am a board member) was a Gatsby-inspired get-together for the charity which supports victims of domestic violence with free reconstructive surgery. The event generously sponsored by Turkish Airlines, held at the stunning Fairmont Miramar in Santa Monica, was one of the best I’ve been to in LA - a great crowd, energized performances by Stacy Francis and Macy Gray, and plenty of money raised for the cause. Definitely unmissable for next year. It was the perfect party to precede my next day’s travel, fittingly on Turkish Airlines to Istanbul and Asia, which you’ll hear all about in the next edition.

health, wealth & wisdom What is Reactive Power Training?

your trainer to discuss whether you have sufficient core strength & balance before you begin on the tips below!

Reactive Power, is a phase of training using quick, powerful movements involving an extended (stretch) movement, followed immediately by an explosive (shortened) contraction! Jumping, hopping, all those things we took for granted as a child, hop scotch, tuck jumps, jumping on and off walls back then they were something we did instinctively day to day. This month in 72M, I’ll show how bringing back all these Power movements can benefit your quality of daily living & increase your training benefits in your adult years.

Why is it important? Do we need Power if we’re not athletes? I say YES! Success in most functional activities (every day tasks) depends on the speed at which muscular force is generated. Although Power benefits are accomplished through plyometric drills which occur frequently in the training of athletes, they work and benefit us all by enhancing the excitability, sensitivity & reactivity of the neuromuscular system.

the future of fitness

Reactive Power Training

There are 3 phases of Reactive Training that you can begin to introduce and we must reach and train through the first 2 phases before we introduce Power into our program. The first is Stabilization; this is designed so you can establish correct landing mechanics, postural alignments & reactive neuromuscular efficiency of the basic movements. The second is strength; improving dynamic joint stabilization & neuromuscular efficiency. The strength phase is performed in a more repetitive fashion, spending a shorter amount of time on the ground. Once these are complete Power exercises are introduced to improve explosive controlled movements with efficient reactive joint stabilization and strength. in the middle of each exercise. (As little joint movement as possible has to occur!)

When can we use Power? An individual must possess a good base level of core strength and an ability to balance efficiently before performing reactive exercises. If you’re currently following a training regime, core strength & balance should be a part of your beginners program and usually take between 3 – 6 months to develop. Your local trainer will be able to help you incorporate these if they haven’t already. Appropriate core strength & balance can reduce the time it takes to go from the first phase of the power exercise to the next with minimal tissue overload or risk of injury. Power exercises need to be performed with control and synchronization, so balance and the ability to stabilize and use strengthened muscles is key to progressing quickly & effectively through different phases of training. Book in a gym review with

seventy2minutes.com  October 2013

Who can do this? It is often perceived by many to be too dangerous & therefore not practiced by most people or even introduced to them by their trainers. There is always a risk of potential injury when performing reactive training at an advanced level, but simply in its basic form, this type of training can, and I believe should, be incorporated to some extent in everyone’s training plan. Care must be taken to ensure you follow a systematic approach that progresses in some order and sequence, so the Power training allows you to begin with the less demanding exercises as you adapt. For example, a 60 yr old woman and a 25 yr old male elite athlete won’t both necessarily need to adopt maximal strength training but they would both benefit from the stabilization, strength & endurance as well as the ability to produce force quickly so why not keep the woman training right through to Power? Thinking about it functionally, the 60 yr old woman may need power to perform daily activities such as reacting to avoid a fall or an obstacle. This could be life saving for her. If she trains to react more quickly than she normally would with specific exercises using movements she may encounter, the benefits to her will be huge. The younger elite athlete will train to a more advanced level but using specific goals to help him reach his training demands and daily activities, still reactive, still Power!

health, wealth & wisdom

How to do it? It’s all about reacting & moving quickly from different movements, heights & directions. From the stretched to the shortened exercise, it ‘s just having the ability to train specific patterns in movement in the correct manner at a fast but still controlled speed. The ultimate goal is to increase the reaction time of the muscle when it is forced to decelerate, stabilize and then to accelerate. To produce a maximal force output in the minimal amount of time with as much ease as possible. Sometimes in life & sport we’re limited by coordination finding it difficult to perform new movements. Muscle has memory & the body will only move within a range of speed that the nervous system has been used to allow. So by introducing reactive training we can increase this range

of speed set by the central nervous system. The body can and will react if you prepare it correctly. We challenge it by following a system of progressive training phases. If you can generate force quickly by practicing the exercises below, the ease of each movement will improve. whether it’s functional or for sport. I looked around the gym at... the other people who were pumping weights. I had arrived early for my boxercise class and decided that some weight training would be a good addition to my new keep fit program. I moved towards equipment that I recognized and one of the gym ‘coaches’ immediately moved towards it too. As I was about to sit down, he moved the weight level to number 2. I moved it to number 4! He looked at me quizzically! So I laughed!

the

r e w o P iusrs

I hadn’t used weights for a while so I could see that I might need some support. However, I was wondering more about the power that lay behind the male coach’s ability to make such an assumption about me as a woman. Did I look like a number 2 ‘lifter’? Yes we would all agree I am short but weak looking I am definitely not! On my second visit, he started me on number 5!!!

Power exists based on how much energy we give it, how much time and energy we invest in it and how much we believe in it. Energy is real and moves us to action/inaction, decision or non decision-making. How much energy do you give to those who say that they have power? Let’s begin in a work scenario. The idea of ‘power’ can be so interesting as a range of other factors can also determine what happens in the workplace. In your work space, the power distribution may be based on who has been employed the longest, the family or personal relationships which exist between employees and the boss and for women it may be about how much sexual power they command or choose to use.

Power between men and women... The coach in the gym fascinated me, as he was a reminder of the new world that I have grown up in against the world that has not changed. As so many daily scenarios illustrate, the role of women continues to shift away from what it was, whilst the role of men does not! So in societies where women have moved away from staying in the home and raising children, to other societies where women have joined men in corporate organizations in the board room, and in the many societies where women continue to set up their own businesses. As a result of these changes, I think there is a crisis of power and understanding between men and women.

44

seventy2minutes.com  October 2013

Yo

There are many new female singers who remind us that they ‘buy their own cars, clothes and pay their own rent’ (Jennifer Lopez and Beyonce Knowles). These artists reiterate the changes that have taken place in society and in women’s lives in the twenty first century specifically. Where as just three decades ago, my Sociology teacher in high school, casually told me that she was getting married that weekend in order to get a mortgage and to buy a home, I know that is no longer the case. The female teacher would not have been able to buy a house on her own at that time and a few centuries further back and women could not only not own property but, were in fact considered to be property themselves. Through all of these changes, men have grown up (in the main) socialized to still be the breadwinner and protector and very little has changed regarding this model. The idea of power between men and women may need to be redefined so that both can be comfortable and learn to relate to each other in different ways.

In the work setting... Moving on from our personal relationships, there are ways in which we can manage power in work too. Language and communication are two of the great starting points when we wish to regain or to develop our own power further. As an NLP practitioner, I observe people everyday who evidence poor management of their personal language and communication skills. The words that we use, the intonation that we ascribe to words and the timing of both.

health, wealth & wisdom One example of this would be when you want to have a difficult conversation with your line manager or with your boss. This woman is legitimately very busy as your organization is going through many changes. However you feel undervalued and would like to suggest a change to your role that would give you greater responsibility. You have the relevant experience and skills. It is month three and you have still been unable to meet with your boss and every time she has promised to meet with you, she has cancelled at short notice as other meetings have over run. You wish to address this matter now as you are aware that restructuring is imminent. Here are three of the options you can choose.

2.

1.

Accost your boss as she leaves your office to go to another meeting and try to raise this concern in the corridor with other onlookers going about their duties, with her peers who will remind her that she has an imminent meeting to attend, and all the time knowing that you do not have her full attention.

Meet with her for 2 minutes whilst she is seated in her office and ask her for an early morning or evening meeting for which you are happy to make yourself available to attend as you can see how busy she is.

3.

Throw a tantrum and demand to meet with her as this has been going on for three months too long!

Where does the power lie in these three possible responses to the same scenario? In response number 2 you have met quietly and acknowledged that there is a challenge of time. You have presented a solution that you are happy to fulfill, as the time would also allow an opportunity to meet when there is less distraction. Option 1 is not a power-claiming scenario at all. Standing in a corridor whilst having 10-20% of the attention which you need is not an ideal scenario at all. She will be focused on the meeting she is about to attend and not you’re your request. Finally option 3 would bring the response that it deserves and children and adults who throw tantrums often find themselves ostracized for their low levels of emotional intelligence.

Moving forward... What do we want and how do we want to get it? This is so much about power too. Our pure personal power that makes things materialize and become real in our lives and worlds. We operate in many worlds that include our home worlds, work worlds and social worlds. How any of these plays out is very much determined by our use of our power. So what is it that you can do to develop your own power and successfully manage your worlds?

Power is not a random characteristic that you stumble across and gain understanding of. It stems from knowing yourself well and, within that knowing, you become a proactive participant as opposed to a reactive receiver in your worlds.

P

ower is a funny word, especially if you are a woman. It stirs up all sorts of emotions and images, mostly uncomfortable ones. When I talk to my girlfriends, or clients, about power things get emotionally charged; as people start to make judgments about powerful women. You only have to look at the CEO of Yahoo, Marissa Mayer, to see what a back lash there has been against her. Yet look at what she has done for Yahoo. Sadly the focus is on ‘her’ and not the results. It seems you are punished by both women and men if you are a powerful woman. Well it does if you are a woman who breaks through the glass ceiling and steps out of the accepted norm that is; you get left with the shards. On the other hand, follow what people feel comfortable with and you are revered, think Mother Theresa, Marie Curie… Jane Eyre. Why is it women who are successful in business or other traditionally male dominated arenas end up being punished? The Truth is, fundamentally, women are afraid of their own power. The other truth is women still judge other women who are powerful. Let’s get back to basics: What is power?

Women, time to embrace your...

I am not talking about physical strength here even though that is a type of power. I am talking about energy; a spiritual power. The power I am talking about is an inner resource and when increased and applied it comes out as a ‘will to do’ and a ‘will to make happen.’ The ultimate no power is death which will happen to us all when we transition from this life to something else. Power is the source of any life; it is your light and your power that determines how much light you radiate, and the impact of that light. health, wealth & wisdom When your power is dimmed, ignored, not tended to, pushed or shoved away or even kicked into touch, it affects your whole life, not just your business and finances, your health and relationships too, and life feels like a continued uphill struggle. When you aren’t powerful in life there is always the feeling that something better will happen one day. There is the feeling that something is missing but you aren’t always sure what or how to bridge the gaps. To justify this fear, and the inevitable judgments that follow, power has been categorised as masculine. Masculine is an energy, yet more often than not, it gets translated to being, ‘of men.’ When did power become a sexist issue? Woman or man power is your gift. It is something to nurture, expand and grow. If you want to make things happen in your life and business, in your relationships and health, in any area of your life then, the change starts from within not externally. You have to be powerful to transform! In calling power masculine it makes women run away from it. Not wanting to appear pushy or overbearing. The fear of power aligns women to overly obsess with the shadow of power! Of course there have been, and will be, those who abuse power. That is not a fault or responsibility of being powerful, that is about those individuals and their off balance personalities. Just because a small minority do this it doesn’t make power, or being powerful, wrong. Power is not to be feared. It is to be nurtured. I see it over and over again where the confusion about being powerful means women are in fact ineffective and hurting themselves. Not being able to ask for what they need or what is due; scared that it will make them appear pushy and too masculine. Not making a stand and creating strong boundaries for fear of being seen as too rigid. Letting things slide so they don’t appear to have lost touch with their feminine side.

1 Select 3 powerful women, you may have unconsciously or actually bashed for ‘letting’ women down, media figures or otherwise, then change your story about them. Look at the positive impact they have in owning and claiming their power. Recognise their authenticity to themselves. This isn’t about justifying women who do harm it is about celebrating those who are in balance with their power. As you engage with power differently so too will you become more powerful in your own life and make your desires a reality.

2

Start to be aware of your own patterns. When you let things happen by default, wish you had spoken up or you hadn’t gone with someone else’s flow notice how your energy drops, your motivation, inspiration and creativity takes leave. When that power drops, all you want to do is sleep, withdraw and start again tomorrow my advice is to take a deep breath and roar! A big belly roar... and let that roar rip out from your tummy as a mighty sound, not to scare others but to shift your energy, to turn your power up to maximum.

3

One of my favourite mottos given to me by a very powerful mentor is, Do Despite! This is for men and women, but especially for women giving in to the spiritual poppycock of; “I didn’t get a sign, it didn’t feel right, I didn’t get into flow”, that may appear plausible to you, but is really just an excuse. You have to do things that you desire even when your emotions try and distract you. Yes, there is balance in ‘doing despite’ but the weight is always in doing. Even if what you are doing isn’t meant to be, you won’t find out what is meant to be if you sit around and do nothing or wait for a message to come knocking at your door!

Let me put it to you another way… What is powerful or enjoyable about being passive and making do? Not much I suspect…. I want to share with you 3 ways you can nurture and expand your power. These also work if you are a man becuase this isn’t an issue of gender. Power is not a reason to judge others. Power is your force of life. It is what will drive you to have the best life but if you don’t claim it then your emotions will run amok and you will feel like you never quite made it.

With these 3 power up tools you will find your life and business changing. Embracing power and recognising the role it has in your life and celebrating power in others is a very benevolent action. It is an act of love. To your power! Let me know how you get on with this and your thoughts and pop on over to my Facebook community where we talk power, money and all things business.

Curry power There is nothing that shouts out power more in the World of food than the chilli. These little berries have travelled far from their original home in South America to storm peoples dinner tables across every continent.

It’s no wonder either, I for one love the almost addictive heat and intense flavour of chillies. They have not only made it into the food in far flung corners of the globe, but have performed the unthinkable feet of becoming a signature of those cuisines. Who could think of Thai food without chillies? Where would the distinctive spiciness of Szechuan dishes come from without them? But there is one cuisine which here in the UK we have come to love and through it become a nation of chilli lovers... it is of course Indian food!

Ingredients • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

500g Diced Lamb 200g Tinned Chopped Tomato (half a standard tin) 1 Large Onion sliced 2 Cloves Garlic minced or finely chopped 1 Grated fresh Ginger (same approx size as the Garlic) 4Tbsp Vegetable Oil or Ghee 1Level Tsp Chilli Powder 1 Tsp Paprika 1 Tsp Cayenne Pepper 2 Tsp Cumin Powder 1 Tsp Ground Coriander 1 Tsp Curry Powder 3 Cardamom Pods 3 Whole Cloves 1 Small piece Cinnamon (about the size of your thumbnail) 1 Bay Leaf 1 Pinch of Salt

Optional • • •

1 Handful of chopped fresh coriander Extra 1 Level Tsp of chilli powder for those who like it really hot! 2 Tbsp Plain Yogurt

Originally Indian food was only spiced with peppercorns, that’s right common black pepper found on every table. Once the chilli was introduced by Portuguese traders several hundred years ago, this changed immediately and the chilli took its rightful place and has become synonymous with Indian cuisine ever since.

lamb rogan josh

Here is my Lamb Rogan Josh recipe. The original dish is a Kashmiri classic getting its deep red colour from lots of crushed chillies. My version is based on the UK restaurant style, try it and I am sure you will find you can now easily make a curry as least as good as your favourite local restaurant! This recipe serves 2-3 Preheat your oven to 180 Degrees. Take a large casserole dish and add the oil, turn your hob on to a medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook until translucent, approximately 5 minutes, then add the garlic and ginger and mix in for 30 seconds. Now add the lamb and continue cooking until lamb has changed colour, approximately 5 minutes. Add all of the other ingredients except for the tomato and stir in, continue to cook for 3 minutes (TIP: Lightly crack the cardamom pods to release more flavour). Turn off the heat and add the tomato (TIP: I use a spoon to take out the pieces to limit the amount of juice going in). Now put the lid on your casserole dish and place in the preheated oven and cook for 1 hour. Serve with rice and sprinkle with the optional fresh coriander. I like to add a spoonful of yogurt, it tempers the heat and adds a little more richness.
