ince the early 1970s, UNESCO (the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization) has been helping preserve what have come to be called “World Heritage Sites” across the globe. This official status of importance aims to protect and preserve these world wonders for future generations to enjoy. There are well over a thousand official UNESCO World Heritage Sites across the planet, 38 of which can be found in nine of the 10 ASEAN nations (Brunei still has no official UNESCO site). In this issue of 24 Life our cover story looks at 10 of the somewhat lesser known UNESCO World Heritage Sites across Southeast Asia. Most travellers to this region are familiar with the more frequented sites, namely Angkor Wat in Cambodia, Komodo National Park in Indonesia, and Ha Long Bay in Vietnam, but the list includes many more diverse attractions, including Cambodia’s Sambor Prei Kuk (just added in 2017). UNESCO is also one of the organizations responsible for conferring the status of “Global Geopark” on sites that promote geodiversity through community-led initiatives to enhance regional sustainable development (most notably through sustainable tourism). Created in 2004, the Global Geoparks Network (GGN) serves to set quality standards for territories that integrate the protection and preservation of Earth heritage sites into their operating strategy. In 2018 the Executive Board endorsed 13 new UNESCO Global Geoparks, including eight in Asia-Pacific: Satun Geopark in Southern Thailand; Cao Bang in Vietnam; Ciletuh-Palabuhanratu and Rinjani-Lombok in Indonesia; Guangwushan-Nuoshuihe and Huanggang Dabieshan in China; Izu Peninsula in Japan; and the Mudeungsan Area in the Republic of Korea. Unlike the World Heritage Sites, however, membership in the GGN is not permanent. Every four years members are revalidated, and if any problems identified remain unresolved the territory will lose its official GGN standing. Through their combined efforts towards preserving World Heritage Sites and promoting Global Geoparks, UNESCO is doing a great servive for modern day travellers, and future travellers alike. INVENTIVE INDIAN CULINARY CREATIONS ON THE MENU AT MAYA RESTAURANT @ BANGKOK, THAILAND For a contemporary, stylish, and often playful take on Indian fine dining, visit Maya—the stylish rooftop restaurant and bar located on the 29th floor of the Holiday Inn Bangkok Sukhumvit—and check out their new menu. It’s a more modern, fusion-style take on India’s incredible and diverse cuisine… and it is totally delicious! Starter menu highlights include: Beetroot Galouti; Avocado Papadi Chaat; Afghani Salmon; and Lamb Seekh Kebab. For mains the curry leaf chicken breast, with sambhar vegetable rice, peanut sesame sauce, and a side order of dal and garlic naan, was a sensation. For dessert try the “flaming” Gulab Jamun— honeyed dough balls topped with Sambuca and set aflame. Even the resident mixologist is whipping up some creative cocktails, infused with Indian spices and other surprises. Of course, not everything has changed at Maya. The décor is still chic and sophisticated, diners can still marvel at the breathtaking panoramic views of the skyline, and you’re bound to hear more than a few cheerful Bollywood hits coming from the DJ booth. www.mayathailand.com

10 AMAZING UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SIT ES IN SOUT HEAST ASIA T HAT SHOW T HE CULT URAL AND NAT URAL DIVERSIT Y OF T HIS REGION

T

he United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization—known as UNESCO—was formed over 70 years ago, but it wasn’t until 1972 that the final version of the "Convention Concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage" was officially adopted (although the idea for a UN World Heritage Trust was proposed as far back as 1965). Since that time UNESCO has been designating World Heritage Sites across the globe, giving them a status of importance meant to protect and preserve both their beauty and their cultural significance for generations to come. Currently there are 1,092 official UNESCO World Heritage Sites worldwide, and 38 of those are found in ASEAN nations. Most travellers are familiar with the more frequented sites, including the ancient city of Ayutthaya in Thailand, the Borobudur temple compounds of central Java that date back to the 8th and 9th centuries, and Angkor Wat in Cambodia, which is considered one of the most important archaeological sites in Southeast Asia. However, there’s a wealth of perhaps lesser known locales to explore, including culturally unique contemporary cities that act as “living museums”, and vast expanses of natural terrain that are some of the only remaining habitats of their kind.

Did You Know? Designated UNESCO World Heritage Sites are classified as either cultural (ancient temples and historic cities), or natural (rainforests and natural preserves), although a third category also exists, called mixed heritage (Machu Picchu in Peru would be an example, as it contains exceptional natural beauty alongside historic cultural significance).

SAMBOR PREI KUK CAMBODIA: Kampong Thom Province | UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2017 Only recently designated as a World Heritage Site, the temple ruins of Sambor Prei Kuk have been identified as the archaeological site of ancient Ishanapura, the capital of the Chenla Empire that flourished in the late 6th and early 7th centuries. The complex is home to Cambodia's most impressive group of pre-Angkorian monuments— some of the oldest structures in the country—and includes more than 100 brick temples. The art and architecture developed here became models for other parts of the region, and laid the groundwork for the unique Khmer style of the later Angkor period. In the early 1970s US President Richard Nixon ordered US aircraft to bomb the area (in support of the Lon Nol government’s failed fight against the Khmer Rouge), and some of the bomb craters can still be seen, often located dangerously close to the temples themselves. Today these ancient ruins are

a more peaceful place, nestled in green surroundings where sandy trails between temples wind through the shady forests.

GUNUNG MULU NATIONAL PARK MALAYSIA: Sarawak State (island of Borneo) UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000

The 528.6 sq.km Gunung Mulu National Park is a protected rainforest in Malaysian Borneo known for its tremendous biodiversity as well as its unique geographic features. Trekkers are especially attracted to “The Pinnacles”, a collection of 45 metre high limestone needles that rise upward from the side of Gunung Api (Fire Mountain). A trail here leads to a small summit viewpoint, which is the spectacular reward for those daring enough to take on this tough and challenging climb. There are also close to 300 km of explored caves to visit, home to millions of cave swiftlets and bats. The cave system here includes the Sarawak Chamber, which measures 600 metres by 415 metres, with a height of 80 metres, making it the largest known cave chamber in the world. The park also contains a whopping 17 vegetation zones, with approximately 3,500 species of vascular plants and well over 100 species of palm.

TOWN OF LUANG PRABANG LAOS: Luang Prabang Province | UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1995 This endlessly charming, laid back little Laotian town is home to more than 30 gilded wats, hundreds of saffron clad monks, faded Indochinese villas, and wonderful Gallic-influenced cuisine; a tasty holdover from the city’s French Colonial era past. Overall it’s a quiet place, where bicycles still make the best mode of transport and not too much goes on after midnight. Notable civic landmarks include: Wat Xieng Thong (Temple of the Golden City) a beautiful and revered monastery that dates back to 1559; the French Beaux-Arts style Royal Palace which was built in 1904 for King Sisavang Vong; and Mount Phousi, a 150-metre high hill with amazing sunset views. Luang Prabang is located right on the Mekong River, so a boat cruise to the nearby Pak Ou Caves—home to thousands of Buddhas and Buddha images left there by devotees—makes for a popular daytime diversion.

Covering 2.35 million hectares on the Indonesian island of Papua, Lorentz National Park is the largest protected area in Southeast Asia. It’s also massive in terms of diversity, and is the only protected area in the world to incorporate a continuous, intact transect from snowcap to tropical marine environment (the mountain known as Gunung Puncak Jaya rises up 4,884 metres tall—the highest island peak in the world—and it is surrounded by beautiful glaciers). Because it’s located at the meeting-point of two colliding continental plates, ongoing mountain formation as well as sculpting by glaciation is evident in the geography here. The park is also home to 630 species of birds, 123 species of mammals, and many indigenous semi-nomadic tribes whose ancestry goes back thousand of years. The best time to visit the park is between August and December.

The width of the Dong Phayayen-Khao Yai Forest Complex spans 230 km, stretching from Ta Phraya National Park on the Thai-Cambodian border in the east, to Khao Yai National Park in the west. This natural expanse is home to more than 800 types of fauna, including 112 mammal species, 392 bird species, and 200 reptile and amphibian species. It is internationally important for the conservation of globally threatened and endangered animals, among them Asian elephants, tigers, banteng (a breed of wild cattle), and the critically endangered Siamese crocodile. Thankfully this natural setting contains substantial and important tropical forest ecosystems, which can provide a viable habitat for the long-term survival of these species. For interested visitors the easiest access point is Khao Yai National Park, just a 2-3 hour drive from Bangkok.

HISTORIC SUKHOTHAI THAILAND: Sukhothai & Kamphaeng Phet Provinces UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1991 Sukhothai was the first capital of ancient Siam, founded sometime between 1238 and 1257 AD. The ruins here were consumed by jungle for several centuries, but restoration began in earnest in the 1960s, and in 1991 the historic town of Sukhothai and its associated historic towns received the UNESCO World Heritage Site designation. Most of the focus for visitors is centered on the 70 sq.km Sukhothai Historical Park. As a tourist attraction it’s exceptionally well-maintained, and for many the best way to see it all is by renting a bicycle for the day. Most of the ruins are in the park’s Central Zone, where the manicured grounds are interspersed with moats, lakes, paved pathways, and bridges. Outside the main park area one of the must-see sites is Wat Sri Chum, a 13th century temple enshrining a massive Buddha whose right hand is covered with gold leaf, applied by Buddhist devotees who come to pay their respects.

IMPERIAL CITY OF HUE VIETNAM: Thua Thien-Hue Province | UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1993

Established as the capital of unified Vietnam in 1802, Hue was both the political and the cultural and religious centre under the Nguyen dynasty (until 1945 when the monarchy was ousted). The walled citadel of this feudal capital faces the Perfume River, which in turn winds its way through the Capital City, the Imperial City, the Forbidden Purple City, and the Inner City—giving this unique historic landmark a setting of great natural beauty. Unfortunately, major damage occurred in 1947 during a six-week siege by French colonial powers. Further destruction took place in 1968 during the devastating Battle of Hue, one of the bloodiest battles of the Vietnam War. Of the 160 historically significant buildings, only 10 major sites remain because of that gruesome conflict. Thankfully, the buildings that still remain are being restored and preserved, and Hue is regaining a touch of its former glory. The Imperial City is open to the general public for viewing, however a donation of approx. US$7 is requested for the Hue Monuments Conservation Centre.

HISTORIC CITY OF VIGAN THE PHILIPPINES: Ilocos Sur, Luzon | UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999

Located on the western coast of the large Philippine island of Luzon, facing the South China Sea, the Historic City of Vigan was established in the 16th century and is today regarded as the bestpreserved example of a planned Spanish colonial town in all of Asia. The unique architecture here reflects the coming together of disparate cultural elements from elsewhere in the Philippines, as well as from China and Europe. The result is a culture and townscape that have no parallel anywhere else. First time visitors flock to the street known as Calle Crisologo, a cobblestone path lined with over 200 homes still preserved from the Spanish colonial period. Tourists also love the horse-drawn wooden carriages, known as kalesa, that offer scenic city rides. Other Vigan highlights include the Syquia Mansion (home of former President Elpidio Quirino), the Bantay Church Bell Tower, and the dancing fountain at Plaza Salcedo.

PYU ANCIENT CITIES MYANMAR: Irrawaddy River Basin UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2014

The Pyu City States are the ancient remains of a trio of city-states—Halin, Beikthano, and Sri Ksetra—that existed from the 2nd century BCE up until the mid-11th century CE in what is now present-day Upper Myanmar (the fertile Irrawaddy River Basin). Interestingly, the Pyu have had a lasting impact, as both their urban planning and their devotion to Pali-based Buddhism have been retained up until the present day. At the Halin Museum, 10 glass cases showcase historic artefacts including pottery and stone slabs inscribed with Pyu writing. Beikthano City spans around 900 hectares, with remnants of Pyu-era city walls, gateways, religious monuments, residences, and a grand palace. Finally, Sri Ksetra City is notable for its massive and ancient Baw Baw Gyi pagodas.

Located in the heart of this industrious city state, the 82 hectare Singapore Botanic Gardens offers a glimpse into the island’s British colonial past, with historic features, plantings, and buildings that illustrate the development of the garden since its creation in 1859. It played a pivotal role in the region’s rubber trade boom in the early 20th century, when its first scientific director—Henry Nicholas Ridley—began serious research into the plant's cultivation. In more recent years it has become a modern, world-class scientific institution used for both conservation and education. Admission is free, except to the National Orchid Garden, located within the main gardens, which is at the forefront of orchid studies and cultivation (their collection consists of 1,200 orchid species and 2,000 hybrids). This park also boasts three lakes, and even a one-Michelin-starred eatery—chef Jason Tan’s renowned Corner House restaurant.

T

he first time I visited Phnom Penh I recall it being a dusty backwater of a city with hardly a building over 10 stories tall. It promised a lot of cheap, and occasionally illicit fun, but there was also a real element of danger once the sun went down and the unlit streets became dark and foreboding. Fast-forward to 2019 however, and Phnom Penh has dusted itself off, cleaned up its act, and emerged as a new and vibrant city where development is booming and skyscrapers are dotting the skyline. Chinese investment is evident everywhere, especially on Diamond Island. Formally known as Koh Pich, this small island lies just south of the popular Sisowath Quay riverfront promenade, and is connected to the mainland by three short bridges. The grand buildings being constructed here— mainly condos, hotels, and malls—are neoclassical Parisian in style. There’s even a replica of the Arc de Triomphe here, and at the top end of the island you’ll find an amusement park, convention centre and small parkette.

Quay

HARVEY LAW GROUP LEGAL DUO GEAR TO CONQUER THAILAND MARKET, TO EDUCATE AND FACILITATE THE BOOMING 3 BILLION DOLLAR INVESTMENT IMMIGRATION INDUSTRY Two experts in immigration law combined forces with one mission in mind: Educate Southeast Asia on global mobility. The story that is about to unveil itself is an intriguing one; two men from the countryside, Jean-Francois Harvey and Bastien Trelcat, have ventured out of the comforts of their motherlands and into the successful path of becoming entrepreneurial-international lawyers, in which one calls Hong Kong and another calls Thailand their home. Meet the Harvey Law Group partners duo who have spent decades of their entire careers to facilitate the expansion of global enterprises and people through citizenship-by-investment. Jean-Francois Harvey was born in Northern Quebec, Canada where he enjoyed countless summer and winter days in the unspoiled natural environment. Since his youth, law has played an important role in his life as he was inspired by his father who was a judge of the Superior Court of Quebec, the highest trial court in the province. He completed a Bachelor of Civil Law degree from the University of Ottawa and was called to the Bar of Quebec in 1992. Having decided that he wanted the freedom of being his own boss, Jean-Francois established Harvey Law Group (HLG) in Montreal, Quebec in 1992, the day after his call to the bar. While working with clients living and working in Montreal’s Chinatown neighborhood, he was called upon to give his advice on helping clients’ friends and families immigrate to Canada, for business investment. It was during these early years that Jean-Francois’s interest in immigration law took hold, stemming from the desire to help clients achieve greater mobility, business opportunities, and quality of life. For the first 15 years, HLG specialized in investment immigration exclusively to Canada. Eventually, his intuition told him that the market was evolving and so he sought other options to meet the growing demands of his clients. This same intuition led him to explore new markets and, to some extent, to create new ones. In 2006, HLG Hong Kong office became the Asia headquarters.

MR. JEAN FRANÇOIS HARVEY (Left) MR. BASTIEN TRELCAT (Right) Bastien Trelcat grew up in Saint-Saulve, a small town in the North of France with a population of 11,000, in a traditional close-knit French family. Born with a twin brother and one sister, he had a simple countryside childhood. As a teenager, during the summers, he started his first jobs with his dad renovating houses and knocking down walls, making inventories at night, or selling mobile phones in local supermarkets, as well as organizing activities for kids in outdoor camps his grandfather created in the 60’s. By that time, Bastien realized being in France for the rest of his life wasn’t what he had imagined for his future. He master-minded ways to travel to new places - starting with attending basketball summer leagues at Florida State University and University of Houston at 16 years old. Back in 2000, Bastien started learning Mandarin during lunch time while attending law school thinking this could be one day turn out to be useful. In 2002, he graduated in Provence from Aix-Marseille University at the top of his class. He had just won the Landwell Award with his three best friends and received a full scholarship to City University of Hong Kong, which he accepted without hesitation as China had just accessed the WTO. Between studying and travelling throughout Asia, he received employment in Hong Kong and worked his way as a paralegal for a law firm. After finishing university, Bastien flew back to Paris to attend the Bar School and join a law firm, who requested his transfer to Shanghai, China. In China, Bastien assisted the largest French MNCs to invest billions in every single industry of the Middle Kingdom, sometime with simply no legal framework into place. He ended up living in the metropolitan cities in Southeast Asia such as Hong Kong, Shanghai, and settled in Bangkok in 2014.

Eight years ago, in the summer of 2011, Jean-Francois Harvey and Bastien Trelcat were introduced by a common friend in a gala dinner in Beijing. After exchanging ideas and learning of each other’s expertise, the partnership formed very quickly. Shortly after, Jean-Francois Harvey, Global Managing Partner Harvey Law Group, and Bastien Trelcat, Managing Partner Southeast Asia, joined forces to grow HLG to a firm of over 70 employees and 19 offices worldwide. The long success of HLG, spanning almost three decades, is credited to a client-focused and results-oriented approach. Today, Harvey Law Group (HLG) is a multinational law firm dealing with corporate law and investment immigration with a worldwide reputation for representing high-profile clients and corporations. HLG was awarded the Immigration Law Firm of The Year at the Annual Macallan ALB Hong Kong Law Awards in 2014 and 2017. Harvey Law Group has notably been offering business immigration services for over 26 years, therefore making it one of the oldest firms, and a pioneer in this highly specialized investment immigration industry in Asia Pacific. Currently, HLG offers citizenship-by-investment programs to 23 countries and counting. Investment immigration, or citizenship-by-investment, is government-approved programs that offer high-net worth individuals the opportunity to invest, and acquire a new nationality. It's a trending accessory among multimillionaires, the ultra-rich, and the new rich, to be able to travel freely or expand their businesses without boundaries. In essence, an individual can invest money into real estate, business, government bonds, or donate directly to the government; in exchange of a new passport, a new citizenship, and a life as a globe trotter.

MR. BASTIEN TRELCAT Managing Partner Southeast Asia “Propelling the Investment Immigration Industry in Southeast Asia has never been more exciting. As a commercial lawyer, you often deal with people’s existing problems and negotiating the best solutions. As a lawyer specializing in investment immigration, the concept itself is relatively brand new in some countries of Southeast Asia. People simply do not know they exist, and even if they do, they consider the idea of investment in mobility too far fetched,” commented Bastien Trelcat. “I love seeing the happiness on our clients’ faces when we can offer solutions to their families to either relocate or pursue their dream lives overseas! Now that is what is worth fighting for. By joining HLG, I have joined a firm that embraced my own vision of the world: pushing boundaries. We do not see borders: we see opportunities.” Jean-Francois added, “While we are solidifying our footprint in Southeast Asia, notably in Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand and the Philippines, we need to continue to expand our services regionally notably in Indonesia and Malaysia while exploring new markets outside Asia. We will do this as we always do, by first respecting the local expertise and knowledge and by taking it one step at the time. The success we have had so far was based on this proven approach, especially with Cambodia.” “Why the new generation clients are so interested in getting a second passport,” explains Jean-Francois Harvey, “is because despite all the technologies, at the end of the day, nothing can replace a face-to-face meeting. While these same technologies are permitting businesses and individuals to expand their markets and horizons, they also request greater mobility and one that can be exercised punctually without the need of visas. Hence, the increasing demand for business people to acquire the necessary travel documents to permit them to travel on demand.” HLG has opened offices in Myanmar, Cambodia, and Philippines. The powerhouse duo's next step is in assisting countries with low passport recognition to establish diplomatic and economic relationship, paving ways to improve bilateral visa policies and agreements, to eventually implementing their own residency or citizenship-by-investment programs.

新年快乐 2019年, 十二生肖中的猪年

! r a e Y w e N y Happ 2019 IS THE YEAR OF THE PIG IN THE CHINESE ZODIAC

Chinese New Year is here! In Chinese culture this important holiday marks the end of the coldest days, as people get ready to welcome spring and what it brings—planting and harvests, new beginnings, and fresh starts. Each individual year in the Chinese 12-year calendar cycle is represented by an animal, and in 2019 this animal is the Pig (the 12th of all the zodiac animals). In Chinese culture, pigs are the symbol of wealth, and their chubby faces and big ears are signs of fortune as well. Unlike the New Year’s Eve celebrations in Western countries, which only last one night, Chinese New Year—also known as the Spring Festival—lasts for more than three weeks. This year, from January 28th till February 4th preparations for the new year festivities begin, with what is called “Little Year”. Then, from February 5th to the 15th, the main Spring Festival gets underway, with Chinese New Year officially taking place on February 5th, 2019. The final four days, February 16th to the 19th, are given over to getting ready for the “Lantern Festival”, which is officially held on the 19th. Interestingly, each year the Spring Festival causes the largest human migration in the world. Since the most important part of Chinese New Year is the family reunion, everyone tries to come back home for the holidays. But in modern China many elderly parents live in rural villages, while their children work in the cities, so there’s a huge number of train, plane, and bus tickets being purchased for that week.
