Thailand recently hosted its annual Tourism Travel Mart, welcoming hundreds of tourism professionals in the city of Pattaya. White canopies had been set up, white orchids decorated the venues, and delegates attending were asked to dress in white. It was a true ‘wedding-style’ event—which was not a coincidence. “Thailand is the perfect romantic setting for newlyweds and honeymooners,” explains Tanes Phetsuwan, Deputy Governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) in charge of overseeing the development and promotion of tourism products and services for international markets. We could not agree more with her statement. The innate Thai sense of hospitality and service, coupled with a wide range of accommodations and excellent value for money, is what has turned the ‘Land of Smiles’ into a destination of choice for newlyweds and honeymooners. “This is a niche market, but a high-spending one which is very good for our local economy,” Tanes Phetsuwan adds. “To promote this we have built a marketing strategy around five related themes: ‘Destinations extraordinaires’; dreamy hideaways; diverse choices; delectable tastes; and distinct hospitality. And, last but not least, there’s a genuine open-mindedness and sense of tolerance that Thai people have towards everyone—whatever their gender, sexual inclinations, religion, or race. “Our current TAT campaign is entitled ‘Open to the New Shades’. There are a million shades for romance here. CANDLE FESTIVAL (THAILAND) Hosted every year when Thailand is entering into the Buddhist lent, the Candle Festival is an impressive show of people's devotion to Buddhist tradition and a magnificent display of skills in carving candles. Held on the full moon of the eighth lunar month, which this year falls on 28 July, Khao Phansa, or Buddhist Lent Day, marks the official start of the rainy season. It coincides with the moment when monks traditionally retreat to their temples for a three-month period dedicating their time to study, meditation, and prayer. During the Candle festival, a competition is held to praise the most beautiful candle, followed by a superb candle procession on floats around the city streets. This year, the festival will take place from 23-28 July in several cities but the prime location remains Ubon Ratchathani in North-eastern Thailand. KADAYAWAN SA DAVAO (PHILIPPINES) Kadayawan sa Davao is a very colourful and lively celebration of the unification of Davao’s resident indigenous groups that takes place in Davao City (Philippines) every 3rd week of August. The Kadayawan festival is a thanksgiving for the gifts of nature which showcases Davao’s rich culture and diversity, paying also tribute to the lumad, a collective group of 11 indigenous tribes living in the city. From 15 to 21 August, tribal groups will bring their colouful traditional costumes, dances and vibes to the streets. One of the highlights is the "Tribal Games", when different tribes showcase their unique sports, skills and games, but do not miss the Indak-Indak Kadalanan, the amazing collective street dance! SINGAPORE NIGHT FESTIVAL Singapore is festive and lit up in August, starting with the National day on August 9 which marks the city-state’s colourful rise to independence and beyond. A stunning day of multi-cultural song-and-dance performances, aerial flybys and military parades capped by a breathtaking firework on Marina Bay. Then, on 18 and 26 August, the Singapore Night Festival (SNF) will show the city’s heritage, arts and culture in a different light, transforming the Bras Basah/Bugis heritage precinct into a midsummer’s celebration of sorts. Lots of events will be held late into the night at different cultural institutions, along with various street and music performances by local and international artists. he first rule, when trying to economise on a wedding event or honeymoon holiday, is to look to alternative tourism centres, bypassing perhaps the most in-demand destinations. The only exception to this strategy would be for those looking to spend their time within Bangkok itself. With its enormous hotel capacity - over 140,000 rooms in some 1,500 hotels - Bangkok offers very good value for money, particularly in the four-star segment. And every year sees the addition of dozens of new properties, which by and large tempt travellers with bargain introductory prices in their brand new facilities.

The popularity of wedding ceremonies and honeymoon getaways in Phuket is huge, first and foremost, but Krabi (including Phi Phi Islands), Khao Lak in Phang Nga province, Koh Samui, and Trang are all high on the list as well. Contrary to many other islands in Thailand, the appeal of Phuket is related not only to its beach areas, but also to its numerous attractions, both coastal and inland. Besides blue oceans, pristine white sands, and a vast number of luxury properties, the island also offers a vintage village feel in old Phuket Town, with colourful Sino-Malay shophouses reminiscent of those also found in Penang and Singapore. Many of these vintage buildings are now charming boutique hotels, ideal for honeymooners. From a total of 1,744 properties, offering 84,427 rooms, 5% of all tourist accommodation establishments in Phuket are ranked as “luxury”, or the upper reaches of “upscale”. But Phuket is also a popular wedding destination for Mainland Chinese, Australians, and Northern Europeans, especially Germans. PHAWADEE DE CRISSEY Born in the peaceful town of Nan, Phawadee de Crissey set out on an adventure beyond her little hometown and pursued higher education at St. John’s University in Bangkok. She’s now a renowned entrepreneur in Phuket and an important figure in Phuket communities with various titles, including the Managing Director of Crissey Co., Ltd., and its affiliates, the Board of Association of Thailand Underwater Sport (ATUS), the honorary member of Thai Red Cross, and the member of Business & Professional Women's Association of Phuket. Mrs. Phawadee de Crissey found love with Mr Claude de Crissey, the Hornorary Consul of France in Phuket and the founder of All 4 Diving and the Royal Phawadee Village Hotel. They soon tied the knot, and after a few years of running the businesses together, they reached out to another business and became the sole distributors of diving gears from USA and Italy. Their business empire now has over 250 staffs, but they wouldn’t stop there. The titles and success are the result of decades of hard work. The couple have been managing Royal Phawadee Village for almost 20 years and it’s still going strong. The hotel is just 150 metres from the famous Patong Beach and visitors love this traditional Thai home design surrounded by lush garden full of different variety of plants. That’s why Royal Phawadee Village is often dubbed as the “oasis” of Patong. As for diving and tour businesses, Mrs. Phawadee leads Aquamaster (Thailand) Co., LTD., the sole distributor of diving gears from USA and Italy with outlets around the country, including Central Mall, All 4 Diving Co., Ltd., the one-stop diving shop where you can learn to dive, buy diving gears, and go on a diving tour to world-class dive sites such as Koh Racha, Koh Phi Phi, and many more routes in the near future. Extending beyond the border, All 4 Diving (Indonesia) on Bali provides the same integrated services as its Phuket sister, and Mermaid Liveaboard (Indonesia), also on Bali, offers a memorable overnight diving vacation on two boats -but reservation has to be made at least 18 months in advance. “Comparing the number of customers and divers, and our sales of diving gears (to the previous years), the numbers are rising year on year. We are confident that Phuket will continue to attract travelers from around the world,” comments Phawadee.

Although Phawadee has been working hard for a long time, she is able to balance her work and personal life extremely well. “In our family we are very close. We can talk about anything and we always try to find time to do activities together. Most of the time we would go out on a boat because my husband (Claude) loves water sports. We try to make time for one another 3 to 4 times a week, because we both have social responsibility. Claude is the Honorary Consul of France and sometimes we have to cancel our family activity when French people are in trouble,” Phawadee explains.
