LA CABINA FILM FESTIVAL “Four

The eighth edition of Valencia’s very own film festival, La Cabina Festival Internacional de Mediometrajes, will

take place from 5 November to 15 November. This year’s Official Section

will be shown at the Filmoteca in the

Plaza del Ayuntamiento. Over the last eight years, the festival has grown and

grown in scope and popularity. It has

now become a firm stand-out fixture on the city’s arts calendar and is the only

important festival of its kind in the world. We spoke to Carlos Madrid who has been part of the festival from its original

inception right up to its present day success.

'KUNG FURY'

What is a mediometraje and what do they offer the audience which makes them different to a standard short film?

way into making bigger productions

A mediometraje (medium-length film) is a film from 30 to 60 minutes long. In addition to the length, there is a fundamental difference with short and full-length films. The distribution circuit of this kind of film is very limited commercially, meaning that the director has taken the admirable decision to make the film just as they envisioned it, with the length just as the story requires and without succumbing to the pressures of producers to shorten or lengthen it to make it more saleable.

Seeing this as a way into full-length

an industry perspective. If we try to see

things more from an artistic perspective, we soon realise that many directors make films at this length simply because the story they want to tell lasts 40

minutes. In fact, many celebrated full-

length film directors have later turned to mediometrajes for simply artistic reasons and several have premiered

at La Cabina. We are talking people

like Spike Jonze, Javier Fesser or Neil Young.

In what ways does this type of film benefit from the existence of a festival like ‘La Cabina’?

How did you get involved in the

In that the festival is unique. It is the only international medium-length film festival in the world and we are lucky that it is held here in Valencia. The festival welcomes films from every genre and many different countries. There is something for everyone, whatever your tastes, there’ll be something at La Cabina that you’ll enjoy.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW

'PETIT HOMME'

Let’s talk about this year’s festival. What’s new? Have you made any changes from previous years? In addition to the Official Section, which are all shown at the Filmoteca, we’ve added a couple of extra sections which will be shown at Centro Cultural La Nau. ‘Amalgama’ is dedicated to non-fiction and other languages, including a work by Claire Denis, and a special showing of ‘El Díptico Rock’ will include a live concert by La Muñeca de Sal along with the film. And on 9 November at Radio City, we will have the now famous ‘Mediometrash’, in which the comic trio ‘CinemaScupe’ will use their own special brand of humour to scrutinise a mediometraje of very dubious quality. What’s more, there will be mediumlength films in the Official Section by directors of the calibre of Mike Leigh, James Franco and viral phenomenon Kung Fury. Have recent political changes, both in the city and regional local governments, had any influence on the organisation of the festival? Would you say there ought to be more promotion and support at an institutional level?

It has had some influence, but let’s not forget that the present authorities have only been in power since halfway through the year and they couldn’t do everything they might have wanted straight away. I think any changes we’ll see will be for next year’s festival. And to answer your question, yes, there should be more promotion, but we have always done our own publicity and communication, and we’ve managed to get a long way down the road promoting things ourselves. Tell us a bit about this year’s line-up. Which films would you particularly recommend? Apart from the James Franco (‘Interior. Leather Bar.’), I would recommend you take a look at ‘Alles Wird Gut’ and ‘I’m the One that You Want’ (Official Section) or ‘The Shadow’s Share’ and ‘10’ (Amalgama Section) As you know, ‘24/7 Valencia’ magazine is aimed at Valencia’s English speakers. There are films from the US and UK at this year’s festival. What can you tell us about them in particular? Yes, there are in fact four mediometrajes from the UK this year, a country which has not had much representation in

previous editions. We have ‘A Running

Jump’, a frenetic comedy from the great Mike Leigh. But no less interesting are

‘Cocoons’, ‘Wasted’ and the wonderful

‘Keeping Up with the Joneses’, which

is a biting comedy telling the story of a kidnapping.

As for the States, you have the Spanish

premiere of ‘Interior. Leather Bar.’, a mediometraje starring and directed by James Franco and thus needs little more recommendation.

Finally, what would you say to our readers to encourage them to go to the festival?

At La Cabina, you get the very best of the international production of medium-

length films each year. What’s more,

these are films which you’ll rarely see

anywhere else. Last year the total audience went up by 30%, reaching 4,000. So many cinema fans can’t be wrong…

VALENCIA MUSIC

BUDDY PAUL

Tell us something about your musical background and upbringing... Hi, ‘24/7 Valencia’. First off, a big thanks for taking the time and interest to help keep the music scene alive in Valencia and Spain in general, nice one! This first one is quite a biggy. I was born in East London in Stepney Green. Yeah, Cockney boy, lol! My father was and still is a trad jazz slide trombonist in the style of Kid Ory from New Orleans. So, I was being dragged along as a baby to East End pubs and clubs, listening to jazz & blues from when I was born and obviously, it took its toll! My father was obsessed that I play in his band to take on the Louis Armstrong part. Therefore, from the age of three or as early as I can remember, I was playing trumpet…at five years old I was playing in his band. At the time it was called the New Era Jazz Band with songs like “Tiger Rag”, “Basin Street Blues”, “St. James Infirmary”, “When the Saints Go Marching In” ...and all that jazz. I think I was reading music at the same time. So that’s where it began. Then for me it got weird, I was put in the British Legion Boys marching band and had the uniform with all the trimmings. Err, no, not for me, thanks, because the blues had already burnt my soul. Article © 2015 24/ 7 Valencia

How does playing and working as a musician in Valencia compare to London? Before I started playing the London scene, I was a roadie for T34, a Londonbased rock band and we are still good friends. I remember when I was an apprentice litho printer, I printed up a load of posters for the Monsters of Rock festival organized by the Hells Angels in 1980, I think. I had a great laugh, wild parties, got smashed with Lemmy from Motörhead and partied with Saxon, Praying Mantis and Scorpions. Also, having a punky background, I did a stint as security for the Damned’; I think it was a GLC benefit gig. What a laugh that was, throwing punks off the scaffolding…oh, those were the days, ha-ha! Then the blues overtook me. Back in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s, I started playing harp again with a few bands. The first one was the Blues Devils. Then I left and formed Madhouse Blues ‘n’ Boogie Band with my friend Barrie Midford-Millership, from the ‘60s band the Shamrocks. With Rick Kane on keyboards from Doc K’s Blues Band, we were unstoppable. Barrie has just written a great book all about the Fender bass and the blues scene called ‘The Mighty Hybrid and the Keeper of the Slabs’, check it out through our online shop at CBBlues.com.

Then I hit the R&B scene and joined up with former Iron Maiden guitarist Bob Sawyer in a band called Nitro Blues, playing Dr. Feelgood, the Doors, you know, rockin’ the hell outta everything… the guys are still going strong. I stopped playing for 25 years due to work, kids and an ex-wife that hated me playing music (hence the ‘ex’, lol!). One time, whilst rehearsing in Chelmsford in Essex, there was a knock at the door, I opened it and in walks Suzi Quatro: “Hey, who’s on the harp?” she said. “Well, that’ll be me,” I said. “Wow, nice harp, man!” she said. I nearly fell through the floor! She was HOT! Tight leather pants, high-heels, yeah! Rock on Suzi! After that, I played a few gigs with her husband, guitarist Len Tuckey, quite a ride, really. I wouldn’t change many things in my life; it’s been a scream! Since then, here in Valencia, I hooked up with the Costa Blanca Blues network and we run a ‘Crossroads Coffeehouse Morning’, plus a matinee concert once a month where I try to get different bands in from all over Spain. This network has also opened doors up and I’ve been honoured and lucky to play with top American blues players like Gene Taylor from Kim Wilson and the Fabulous Thunderbirds, Paul Orta & the Kingpins from Texas and have interviewed many great musicians for CBBlues and blues fans everywhere.

BUDDY PAUL Rick Astley with Buddy Paul in Valencia!

we’re in Valencia, and it’s a party capital, so PARTYYYY and blues on!

The difference I have found here in Valencia is that the musicians are all at

such a high level it’s amazing. However, to try to keep a band together and have

fun, the friendship, the comradeship, the

closeness, the full rock ’n’ roll attitude of all for one and one for all is just not quite

where it’s at here. It’s more like a whole library of session musicians. Having said

that, I have found this missing part with

our band, Buddy Paul and the Crazy Goats, a great bunch of fun-loving,

talented, unselfish Crazy Goat head cases. So, we play the blues, we jazz, we rock, we funk it up, we ska, we love

it. We’re musicians and love all music

across the whole spectrum. Buddy Paul & the Crazy Goats is THE BAND for all

occasions, ha-ha-ha, so go on book us for a gig, lol!

What is special about the blues for you?

Blues for me is a way of life. No, it’s not depressing, it’s a celebration of times that you have come through, if you are

here to sing about it. If you can make light of a bad time in the past through

blues music, then you’re on the way home, you know. It always changes

depending on your mood, the solos, the lyrics, the feel. It’s as free as you allow

yourself to be. I’m a bluesman at heart,

but I step in to the realms of other styles,

What was it like playing live twice with the legendary pop star Rick Astley recently in a local bar on the Valencia coast? Can you tell us what happened and how it came about? Ah, the Rick Astley thing! Ha-ha-ha! I was in ‘El Lloc’ pub on Playa Pobla de Farnals. (We run a jam every Sunday night there at 20.00h… ha-ha! Plug!). A girl said he was staying in the hotel, 100 meters up the road, so I sent a message, “Hey Rick, fancy a jam? Come on down, lol”…and blow me, an hour later he walks in with the whole band. So I suppose we had to let him play! I’m not sure if he saw the message or it was a fluke but… we had a great night and the guys and girls were awesome. They had such a good time that afterward, we spoke and I arranged a special unannounced gig so they could come back. And they did. We rocked and we played all sorts with Rick and the band. Great guys, cool as hell and still in touch with them, laughing about the night. It was a nice surprise to meet Rick and, just to let everyone know, Rick Astley is a great musician, an awesome singer and front man, down-to-earth and a wicked drummer and versatile as hell. We played everything, from his ‘80s hits like “Never Gonna Give You Up” to AC/ DC’s “Highway to Hell”, “Uptown Funk”, “Ain’t Too Proud to Beg”, “Sweet Home Alabama” and more. Simon Taylor joined in, with his wicked saxophone, and we had one of the

‘Craziest Goat’ nights we have ever had, so a big thanks for coming to play, awesome, anytime, and don’t forget Rick, if ya need a harp, let me know… What are your plans for the coming year? My plans for the future are to push our band, Buddy Paul & the Crazy Goats Blues Band, work to keep the blues alive through Karla Darocas, CBBlues.com and Crossroads Coffeehouse Mornings, Valencia Blues Society, Alicante Blues Society, Benicàssim Blues festival (thanks Jorge el Corb and Maquelle) and the La Hora del Blues website with Vicente Zumel. We’re producing a CD to be out soon and basically play live as much as I can. You can find us on Crazy Goats Facebook page, also CBBlues. com… sign up! Come and dance and blues on, my friends. Interview by Owl Contact details: For gigs, weddings, parties, concerts, session work with harmonica & lessons… Tel.: 722 484 288 Email: Buddypaulcbblues@gmail.com

FOOD

AUBERGINE WEDGES By Helen Westwater La Ola Fresca To grace our autumn recipe for this

month, we turn to that deep purple vegetable known as the aubergine.

A vegetable that according to folklore caused an Imam to swoon, either for the

beauty of the dish or the amount of olive oil his wife had used to cook with it! It is

also known as the poor man’s meat as it can add an almost meat-like texture to vegetarian dishes.

Along with tomatoes, potatoes and bell peppers, the aubergine belongs

to the nightshade plant family and was originally introduced as a decorative garden plant. However, they are an

excellent source of dietary fibre and a good source of vitamins B1 and B6

and potassium. In addition, it is high in the minerals copper, magnesium

and manganese and particularly a rich

source of antioxidants, specifically the nasunin found in aubergine skin, which gives it its purple colour.

This recipe (which does not use gallons of olive oil), I have gleaned from my

favourite book of the moment ‘Green Kitchen Travels’ by David Frenkiel and

Luise Vindahl, a great source of healthy vegetarian food. I hope you will enjoy it as much as me.

AUBERGINE WEDGES Ingredients (makes about 20 wedges) • 1 aubergine • 500 ml (18 fl oz) milk of your choice • 150 gm (5½ oz) polenta • 2 teaspoons coarse sea salt, plus extra for serving • A little cold-pressed olive oil TO SERVE • Finely grated zest of 2 limes2 tablespoons clear honey

METHOD About an hour before you are ready to cook, take the aubergine and cut it into small wedges of about 7.5 cm (3 in) long. Put it in a large bowl and cover with the milk and soak, to draw out the bitterness. When your aubergine has been soaked for at least an hour, set the oven to 220°C / 425°F / gas mark 7 and line a baking-sheet with baking parchment. Mix the polenta with the salt in a shallow bowl. Remove the aubergine from the milk and coat the wedges evenly all over in polenta. Place them on the prepared baking-sheet. Drizzle lightly with olive oil and bake for about 12 minutes, or until lightly golden and crispy and soft on the inside. Serve with some extra sea salt, lime zest and honey drizzled on top. And if you like, a little yoghurt mixed with a clove of crushed garlic and salt and a sprig of mint. La Ola Fresca C/ Músico Magenti, 11 Tel.: 610 026 305 www.laolafresca.com Zona Benimaclet

LALOLA NOW HAS ITS OWN BRAND OF BEER! Good news! The legendary and popular LaLola Restaurant, set beside the Cathedral for over a decade, has launched onto the market the first beer that pays homage to the local Barrio del Carmen… “This is a much-needed cry at this time to highlight everything that represents an area of Valencia that has always been characterized by its cultural initiatives”, in the words of charismatic and welcoming host Jesús Ortega.

This new and distinctive beer has the official support of internationally

renowned and award-winning Valencian

cartoonist Paco Roca who, together

with Dani Nebot, was responsible for designing the LaLola beer label.

The design for the LaLola beer shows the iconic figure of a woman who embodies the soul of the neighbourhood.

LaLola’s fresh & trendy beer is now available to enjoy at the famous restaurant. Take the time to savour their beer in celebration of the creativity of Valencia’s dynamic historic centre: “We wanted to remember its streets, its squares and especially its people, who have represented the artistic, bohemian and musical spirit of the city for a long time”. Walking through the streets of the Barrio del Carmen on the way to our table at 98º Dim Sum Experience was a little like being on the set of ‘The Walking Dead’. We pass people with major stab wounds, gashes on their faces, hollows where there should be eyes, and the most outlandish costumes and clothing. It was hard to make it through some of the streets for the throngs of weirdos! It was, of course, Halloween night in Valencia, and a night that has grown in the past few years from nothing to a major street party, particularly in the historic centre!

But first, we enjoyed a refreshing glass of Atance ‘Cava Brut Nature’ from Requena. We wondered, as we drank (and dipped fingers in the sauces to try, unconventional, I know, but we were eager to try!), how the dim sum would be served… as when we have had it in Chinatown in London, or in Hong Kong, it was served from trollies that made the rounds of the restaurant.

We had a late table booked for 22.15h but because of the ghouls & corseted women & monsters & general crazies, we arrived 15 minutes late. 98º Dim Sum Experience was heaving, Eddie, the owner-chef of this new enterprise, welcomed us and told us that he had kept us a table on the terraza, and introduced us to Oscar, our waiter for the evening. He explained the concept of 98º Dim Sum Experience: Steam, Cantonesestyle dim sum with a Mediterranean twist and proceeded to place four small dishes in a row between us. He filled them with dipping sauces – a citrusy mix of ginger, mint and mirin, a sweet chili with honey Article © 2015 24/ 7 Valencia

Then the bamboo steam baskets began to arrive on wooden boards. First up was ‘Char Siu Bao’, which was steamed buns filled with barbecue-flavoured char siu pork (2€ each), one of my personal favourites, as it was sweet and soft and delicious. Next came ‘La Huerta’, small, crescent-shaped dumpling filled with carrot, Chinese cabbage and pumpkin (4.80€ for 4). And then four more, these were filled with four mushrooms, oyster, shiitake, shimeji and mu-er (5.20€ for 4). They are so attractive, these tasty little half-moons, you almost can’t help but enjoy them. By now we had a bottle of ‘L’Inconscient’, a lovely Priorat red (Shiraz/Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot) wine from Les Cousins, Marc and Adriá (17.50€ a bottle).

Next came the star of the show, as far as D and I were concerned. ‘Costilla corta’ were boneless ribs of veal, slow cooked for eight hours and glazed with white radish and caramel and topped with a shredded cabbage (9.10€). Melt-inthe-mouth, full of flavour and absolutely stunning. There was still more to come, ‘Cuak cuak’ – yes, you guessed – roast duck and Chinese spring onion-filled dumplings, (6.10€ for 10) and yum yum! Our final dim sum was ‘Chupa chups de langoustine’, large shrimps battered in a super crunchy and crispy coating and sprinkled with the tiniest pieces of chopped cucumber I have ever seen (8€ for 6). We cleaned out our dipping dishes with these delicious morsels! It began to drizzle slightly and get a little cold outside and the crowds inside had thinned, so we elected to move inside the restaurant for our dessert. The interior is dominated by the bar, behind which Eddie prepares his little steamed parcels, cocktails are mixed and coffees and teas (big selection) are brewed to order. You can sit at the bar and watch Eddie and eat while he sends out his logostamped bamboo baskets. To the left of the entrance are tall tables and stools and to the right a ‘chill out zone’ with low banquets and lower tables. This is where we sat to eat our ‘Choco-Vap’, a steamed molten chocolate cake served with grated white chocolate and a

mango foam (5.50€) and a half-portion of ‘El Refrescante’, a lychee sorbet with yoghurt and a jasmine honey and mint swirl (5.50€). The older I get the more I am a sucker for chocolate puds and this didn’t let me down. D really loved the lychee. Eddie came and joined us to chat about his plans for 98º Dim Sum Experience. It is billed as a cevichería / cocktail and chill out bar / cooking workshop & play centre, so we were intrigued to know more. The cooking workshops will start later in the month, initially for children, as will the play centre. The idea being that parents can come for brunch or lunch and their kids will be entertained while their parents eat. Great idea! He plans for 98º to open more branches around Spain and is planning to franchise it. The staff around him at 98º

are charming and obviously extremely happy and work well as a team. Eddie, who trained under Gordon Ramsay and other Michelin-starred restaurants around Europe, is a busy man who seems to thrive on challenge. Not only does he have 98º Dim Sum Experience, but flies to and from Kuwait on a regular basis consulting on a restaurant project there. La Comisaría, his other restaurant just around the corner in Plaza del Árbol, is still running under his supervision, but with a new and talented chef. We found out they make excellent gin tonics without him having to tell us because we drank one as we chatted! We had a great time at 98º – we’ll be back and next time we’ll try the ceviche! 98º Dim Sum Experience is already getting quite a reputation, and is getting booked, so book early if you want to

experience it. They offer great menu deals with an 8€ menú del día and a 20€ night menu. Tim Birch 98º Dim Sum Experience

VALENCIA INTERVIEW

BRITISH COUNCIL

NEW CertTESOL PART-TIME COURSE The CertTESOL is a practical course in classroom methodology. It is recognised by the British Council as an initial qualification for teachers in its accredited organisations in the UK and in its own teaching centres overseas. Jorge García interviews Nelson Arditto, Course Director Why a part-time course? We’re still offering a one-month intensive course in July. However, some people may not be able to commit for a full month or may want to complete their training over a longer period of time. The part-time course is spread out over 6 months from January to June 2016. So, for example, while on the intensive course there is input and teaching practice every day, the part-time one takes place on Friday mornings and Saturday afternoons. What’s the difference CertTESOL and CELTA?

VALENCIA FOOTBALL Nuno

Atlético Madrid vs Valencia CF

FINDING NUNO For the second consecutive month Valencia

CF have strung together a series of inconsistent performances that continues

to leave them well off the pace in the league title race. Additionally, both fans and players are finding Nuno’s selection policies

increasingly difficult to comprehend, with the talk on the terraces prior to the game

asking, “Who will the manager start this time round?”

Star striker Álvaro Negredo seems to have been the fall guy in all the tinkering, with

the out-of-favour international failing to even make the bench for numerous games recently. After

the

Bilbao in San Mamés at the beginning of October, there was a weekend gap in the

fixture calendar to accommodate the final qualifying games of the 2016 Euros. Several

Valencia players went off to represent their selected countries and thankfully, all came

back from international duty without any major injury concerns.

Next up for Valencia was a home game

with Málaga. The Portuguese coach made five changes from the team that started in

the Basque region in an attempt to get the league campaign back on track.

Los Chés put in one of their best

performances to date with a convincing 3-0

victory. One of the returnees, Santi Mina, had arguably his best game in a Valencia shirt since his arrival from Celta Vigo.

Another newcomer, Aderlan Santos, made an impressive home debut.

The opening goal came via a regular source, in the shape of Pablo Piatti. His ‘cross-cum-shot’ free kick was helped on its

way by the luckless Charles, who converted

unceremoniously bundled over by Godín…

giving the referee no option to give the

visitors a spot kick. Alcácer, on as substitute for the injured Rodrigo, made no mistake

and put the visitors back in the hunt for a point.

However, Valencia failed to carve out any

kind of serious chance as the hosts saw out

the game to collect all three points. Once again, Los Chés looked vulnerable on their travels and if another serious assault is to be made on the league, then solutions need to be found to this weakness… and quickly.

Valencia ended the month with the derby

game against Levante UD. The team from the north of the city have had a torrid time of

late and currently prop up the La Liga table.

The victory over Villarreal at the start of October was followed by heavy defeats at Real Madrid and at home to Real Sociedad, the latter by a four-goal margin.

Derby matches have a habit of throwing the form book out of the window and Levante

started off the better as they looked to

create an upset under their new manager, Rubi. Morales, Roger and Tono García all had good chances to give the visitors the lead as they dominated the first half.

At the interval, Valencia changed things around a little by substituting Piatti for Bakkali and his pace and determination was

a welcome sight for Valencia fans looking for more passion and fight from their idols.

With Levante looking increasingly likely to

snatch a point, the deadlock was finally

off a fierce shot from Gomes that the goalkeeper could only parry, and in the

process was brought down by a Levante

defender. Alcácer kept his cool and made

no mistake to convert the spot kick for the second time in consecutive matches.

With Levante’s spirit dampened, Valencia

took control of the match for the first time

and a poor back pass from Juanfran

allowed Alcácer to pounce and poke the ball past goalkeeper Rubén and towards goal.

NIGHTLIFE

NOVEMBER’S NECTAR...

After having been ‘tricked or treated’ by an irritable two-headed dragon or a repulsive witch last week, are you ready for this month’s new challenges? Ready to venture into some new venues? If you are looking for alternatives to the touristy spaces, here is this month’s guide to nightlife in Valencia. Firstly Valencia is famous for its orange groves or naranjos … So why not indulge in a free glass of freshly-squeezed orange juice on your way back home from the after party? With the purpose of celebrating the ‘Semana del Desayuno Valenciano’, the local hospitality association has made the original decision to promote zumo de naranja (orange juice) from 2 until 6 November, with 25 bars offering this nectar to customers that order a coffee and toast breakfast combo (approx. 2€). Some of the participating cafes will open as early as 07.00h (Bar Marzal at C/ Matemático Marzal, 16 or Bar Casa Mundo in C/ Don Juan de Austria, 11).

24/7 VALENCIA contribute to ensuring the perennation of its organisation. Another musical experience will be launched this month with She’s the Fest – from 27 to 29 November – an exclusively female line-up including talents such as Belako, Kid Wave, Joana Serrat, Skinny Girl Diet, Les Sueques, Nuria Graham, Hella Comet, Leyya and Bala. This takes place in a venue called Las Naves (C/ Juan Verdeguer, 16) in the port area. What else is going on towards the beginning / middle of the month? With Valencia’s latest shopping craze, the ninth edition of the fashion outlet fair (‘Stockcity! Feria Outlet Valencia 2015’) shutting as late as 22.00h, you could be leaving the Feria de Valencia (in the Benimàmet neighbourhood) with a grin from ear to ear, having snapped up a few bargains. This particular start to the evening presents some questionable – sober yet impulsive – decision-making and will materialise on 13 and 14 November. Poles apart, you might find your memorable start with the fall season marking the beginning of the classical music concerts again. You will be able to attend concerts, opera and other recitals in the Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias’ opera house, the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofia or, a little less further up the Turia riverbed, classical music concerts in the grandiose Palau de la Música concert hall.

Enough now with the reverse chronology! Let’s rewind now to the beginning of the evening… where many stories will start to unravel. Where will yours begin?

This course of action, however, might seem too fictional to some – with a different risk appetite or with distinct interests – so let’s run through another set of possibilities. Other notable risks could involve other interpretations of ‘nectar’. So which is your drink of the gods?

With over 50 concerts and music-related performances, the barrio of Ruzafa will be hosting the first ever MUV! Circuito Música Urbana Valencia. Although the three-day event from 5 to 8 November presents Valencia with free gigs, locals and visitors alike will have to procure a ticket. Donations are welcome and – if the event proves to be a success – will

Something equable and less clearheaded could involve going to Radio City (C/ Santa Teresa, 19), with its language exchange evenings every Thursday from 20.30h onwards. Although this event is now collaborating with ESN Valencia (Erasmus Student Network), it still attracts a wide age range. If you arrive there a little later, you might find yourself staying

Article © 2015 24/ 7 Valencia / Main Photo © Juan Ortega 24/7 Valencia

there until the early hours of the morning after a few mojitos or G&Ts. It is set in the centro histórico. Radio City has live flamenco every Tuesday. Beware though! By now you might already be set in your ways, going to the same neighbourhood over and over again… so don’t forget you have numerous options to choose from. For a student vibe, Benimaclet or Plaza Xúquer and Plaza Honduras are great areas to spend an entire evening and for something more authentic and Valencian, try out the Juan Llorens district, or El Cedro. For great variety and bohemian trendiness, El Carmen or Ruzafa are always lively and finally, for an earlier start, look to Cánovas with its upmarket, cosmopolitan restaurants and bars. Or try a later start in the Avenida Aragón / City of Arts and Sciences area with bars such as ‘On the Rocks’(Paseo de la Alameda, 45), a café bar with progressive house music closing at 02.30h during the week and 03.30h during the weekend. This could all be your next playground! And ultimately, for those eager to go clubbing, here are some dance floors for you to put to the test this month: Le Premier (C/ Eduardo Boscá, 27) for house and more commercial music, Jerusalem Club (C/ Convento Jerusalén, 55) a cinema converted into a discotheque which recently switched style and is now going more for rock and pop music whilst also organising live music events with tribute bands, etc. Akuarela Playa (C/ Eugenia Viñes, 152) with its Ibiza vibes is also a hotspot, only a block away from the seafront, and situated. It is open until 06.00h from Thursdays to Sundays. Fryda (Av. Cortes Valencianas, 58) is a newish club set behind the luxury Sorolla Hotel with an attractive interior. Here you’ll find an attractive, upbeat and mostly Spanish crowd dancing to house and pachanga until 07.30h! VIP lounge included for groups… On that note, “Salud” y “A disfrutar!”. Julia Matt

I was brought up in Lanark, a sleepy little town in central Scotland, before moving onto to Glasgow to study and gain my Ph.D. in cancer research. Glasgow may have a reputation for being a rather stark place with a rough character, but it is a fantastic place to live and study (and drink and eat!) and it will always remain close to my heart. From there I moved on to Newcastle, where I started to study human stem cells, and how we can use them as a treatment for blindness, diabetes, and Parkinson’s disease, to name but a few. After a few years, our laboratories needed refurbishing and we moved to Valencia to work for a year. For me, that one-year turned into six and counting! Describe a typical week for you as a scientist in Valencia. While my long days in the laboratory staring down microscopes and looking after endless millions of cells are over, I still am heavily invested in the sciences. My work is currently shared between the Centro de Investigación Príncipe Felipe, where I work as project manager, and at home, where I work as a writer and editor for websites and journals working in the stem cell field. Every day throws up a new study, a new finding, a new advance, and something new to learn, so the work is never boring. Article © 2015 24/ 7 Valencia

How does living in Spain compare to Scotland? I think these comparisons are always difficult to make….the obvious difference is, of course, the weather, which in Valencia means that you have so much more time to get out and do something without the worry of frostbite! However, I do love Spain and Scotland for completely different reasons, and it would be easy to repeat the list of common complaints. But then I remember that I love it here and have no intention to leave any time soon. For every disadvantage that Spain has compared to Scotland, I can always see multiple advantages to balance things out, such as the excellent wine, the cheap cost of living, and numerous picturesque pueblos ready for exploration. Do you see a similarity with Scotland and Catalonia in their fight for independence? The Catalans and the Scots share many key aspects; we are both hard-working people who are proud of their history and separate identities and are (apparently) both very ‘safe’ with our pennies! I understand the desire for independence and I can see where the anti-Spanish and anti-English sentiment arises from, but I truly believe that we need to be tearing down barriers and not building new ones. While my mother is Scottish, my father is English, and perhaps this gives me a different view on the matter (also my father told me not to

One of the great things about Valencia is the wide range of outdoor activities that are right on your doorstep. Any given weekend you can choose between cycling (the Los Ojos Negroes route between Caudiel and Soneja is my favourite), hiking (over the Roman aqueduct between Calles and Chelva is stunning), canyoning (Montanejos), running (through the Turia riverbed is always fun), or rafting (Las Hoces del Cabriel). Also, while there are plenty of beach-related activities, snowboarding and skiing are also within easy reach in Valdelinares and Javalambre. We all have the honour to live in such a beautiful place with stunning scenery, it would be a shame not to get out there and enjoy it! Describe for us what the Portland Ale House means to you. The Portland is probably one of the main reasons why I stayed in Valencia. After being introduced by a good friend (Lou King, it’s all your fault!), it soon became my second home, and I’ve made many good friends who have become my family, an important thing for many expats. The homebrew is fantastic, the burgers are the best around, but it’s the staff, and especially Maurice, the owner and master brewer, that give the place that special something. I have lost count of the amount of amazing parties we have had for birthdays, Christmas, Thanksgiving, and of course, my favourite, Halloween! I’ve also been helping to run the Pub Quiz there for a few years now, and we are always looking for more teams to come and enjoy themselves on a Sunday night! Interview by Owl
