INSIDER GUIDE FALLAS What a Fallero would say: What could be better than the fruits of the Valencian countryside, its palms and colourful flowers portrayed in the night sky of this majestic city? What a Fallero would never say: Not those caterpillars on parachutes again! Boring! Where’s my gin and tonic? Insider knowledge: Get yourself a good spot about half way down the Alameda on the Viveros side (the smoke always blows towards Avenida Aragon). Watch out for the unofficial firework wars in the riverbed before and after, they are not for the faint hearted,

INSIDER GUIDE FALLAS MASCLETÀ Daytime fireworks are a very Valencian contribution to the world of pyrotechnics. Forget about pretty pictures in the sky, this is all about noise, rhythm, the smell of gunpowder and having your bones thoroughly shaken by the ferocious aural assault of the finale. All this under blue spring skies, amongst a huge and expectant crowd in the Ayuntamiento as the excitement and tension builds while you await the opening salvoes. People love their loud bangs and air bombs round these parts. The pyrotechnician is loudly acclaimed and carried out on the shoulders of his fans at the end of a good show. What a Fallero would say: A sublime musical symphony, a celebration of Valencian culture in fire and smoke. What a Fallero would never say: Rhythm, my arse. That was just a random load of loud bangs. And you’re telling me I’ve stood in this square for forty-five minutes next to those loons in the straw Amstel hats for this? Insider knowledge: The Mascleta is best enjoyed after a few pre-bombardment beers and a plate of patatas bravas, but make sure you get into the square a good half an hour before it starts and get settled in somewhere near the post office building. a great view from there and you can usually get out pretty quick when it’s all over. Must see: Once you’ve seen the big one, try and see at least one mascleta at a barrio falla. Sat outside a bar with a beer, you can get closer, there are less people, and it feels just as ferocious and in some ways more authentic and, most importantly, you won’t be squashed up against those blokes in the Amstel hats. Don’t bother: If you are running late, don’t bother going. Save it for another day. Mascletas are meant to be experienced close up. There’s nothing worse than hearing it from round the corner without seeing or feeling it in all its glory. CASTILLO If you prefer your firework displays in the more traditional manner at night, you’ll see some of the best you’ve ever seen at Fallas (honestly). This being Valencia they’ll also no doubt be the noisiest. Valencia’s top firework bods are in demand all over the world. Valencians have been responsible for the fireworks at Olympic closing ceremonies and the World Cup final in South Africa. They compete with each other to produce the fastest, most original and loudest explosions of light and sound with huge multi-coloured asteroids lighting up the Alameda and the faces of the oohing and aahing crowds.

Must see: Without doubt, the Nit del Foc on the night of the 18th. Don’t bother: No half measures, it’s impossible just to pop over ten minutes before. It’s got to be part of your plan for the evening. There’s no point watching it half obscured by some building, if you are going to go, get there early and wait. FOOD AND DRINK Valencia is especially famous for its rice dishes but it’s not that easy to get the best paella in Fallas. This is probably the worst time of year to eat in Valencia. Everywhere is packed out, prices go up, menus are reduced, quality goes down, the waiters and chefs are worn out. Buñuelos (basically deep fried doughnuts) stalls spring up all over the city where you can get the traditional Fallero breakfast of hot chocolate and “churros”. As for drinking, Valencia has no shortage of night spots and in Fallas they are all full and lively. If you are really desperate for a beer, you are never far away from a bloke selling cans of Steinberg out of a shopping trolley. What a Fallero would say: I’ve already eaten thanks, and anyway we’ve got a barbecue tonight at the Casal. What a Fallero would never say: Have you been frying those doughnuts in the same oil all week? Insider knowledge: Book yourself into a decent restaurant for at least one sit down meal. tapas bars around Valencia for example. You’ll need a break from all those bocadillos on the hoof. Somewhere off the main thoroughfares and squares is probably your best bet. The barrio of Ruzafa might be a good starting point. Must see: If you get the chance, sign up for a paella competition at a Falla. Street party, good food, plenty to drink and guaranteed good fun, the paella is the least of it. As far as nightlife is concerned, you have to have at least few dodgy gin and lemons at a Verbena, that’s what it is all about after all. Don’t bother: Avoid those tourist trap expensive menus in the centre. Don’t spend all night in a bar, get out on the streets and get involved. THE FALLAS MONUMENTS The monuments are at the centre of the whole festival. Like huge three-dimensional saucy seaside postcards, their core purpose is to satirise life in the city or the neighbourhood, poking fun at politicians and celebrities in papier-mâché. There are more than 300 around the city, commissioned, and in some cases built, by the local neighbourhood fallas. They are divided into categories depending on how much money was spent on their construction. Monuments from the top division (Sección Especial) can cost up to 500,000 Euros. “WHAT IS FALLAS?” This is what the city’s residents say; condensed for you by David Rhead and José Marín… The smell of cordite and the sizzle and crack of rockets. The smell of Buñuelos frying in the middle of the night. The smell of the Plaza de la Virgen carpeted with Spring flowers at four o’clock in the morning. The smell of ammonia in the morning when someone has used your doorstep as a bar toilet. Sunny mornings, windy afternoons and chilly nights. The mad rush to get to the Mascletá. Snap, crackle and pop and distant marching bands. The Fallera Mayor waving and weeping. The Mascletá. The overcrowded “VIP” balcony at the Ayuntamiento. The rhythm of the masclets filling the square. The rush and rumble that booms in through your toes and blasts out through your fingertips. Walking for an hour and then waiting forty-five minutes in a hot, crowded square for five minutes of loud bangs. Screaming rockets on sunny blue skies. As spring approaches, a couple of the ‘24/7 Valencia’ team popped by for a sunny midweek lunch at ‘Simalú.’ To begin with, we shared a couple of refreshing Peruvian ‘Cusqueña’ imported beers with homemade, ‘maiz tostada kiko’ nuts from Peru to accompany. A memorable dish, we enjoyed a generous ‘Ceviche de corvina’ (sea bass, lime juice, coriander,

corn & yam) a classic dish with plenty of character. This was followed by some wonderful, oven-cooked ‘empanadilla de pollo casero’ (chicken patty). Indeed, this is “cocina con sentimiento”. Next up was very well-prepared & lightly fried Yuca to share, complemented perfectly by their pale green huancaina sauce. FOOD BY HELEN WESTWATER OF LA OLA FRESCA ‘ARNADÍ DE CALABAZA’ One of the most fascinating things about cooking for me is the dialogue or stories that can be passed down through the ages. Traditional recipes and the way they are celebrated in our homes can give coded messages of where we came from and the stories of our journey. As we are in March and the month of Fallas in the Valencian calendar, we will break open the history of Valencia’s oldest dessert known as ‘Arnadí de Calabaza’ (pumpkin) and hear its surprising history. You will find Arnadí de Calabaza particularly in the Costera area of Valencia and particularly in its ancient Capital of Játiva (Xàtiva). The name of the dish ‘Arnadí’ most likely comes from an Arabic word, ‘garnadí,’ referring to the geographic origins of this dish in Muslim Granada. In the early 13th century, a series of religious pogroms swept the South of Spain and many of the Sephardic Jewish community were welcomed to Játiva and seem to have brought the recipe with them with the use of ground almonds, a characteristic of medieval Jewish cuisine, being one of the clues. It is strange that what seems to have started as probably a Sephardic Jewish Passover dish (due to lack of leavening agent) is now seen, in a transition from medieval to modern Article © 2020 24/7 Valencia

So when you find the Arnadí dessert in Valencia, think of the secrets it may be whispering to you. Perhaps also its shape formed like a mini-mountain is also a reference to its origins in Granada, but that’s just my theory! INSTRUCTIONS: Preheat oven to a low to medium setting. Boil the pumpkin or boniato with skin on and then peel, drain well and mash. Put in a large pan with the sugar and cook for 15 minutes until all the moisture has evaporated. Stir so it does not stick. Add the ground almonds, cinnamon and lemon rind to this mixture and stir well. Next, take a terracotta dish and pile the mixture in a pyramid shape. Then decorate with the whole

almonds. Put in the oven for approximately one hour till golden and firm to touch. Let it cool, dust with more confectioner’s sugar if you like, and serve it at room temperature.

VALENCIA STREET ART: EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH KROME 24/7 Valencia: What are your concepts and philosophy regarding your work? KROME:There have been several throughout my career. At first, like any tagger starting out my aim was to leave my mark as much as possible with my name. Now I continue to do this but with other methods and another philosophy. In my opinion, tagging is usually lacking a meaning beyond the name itself. I like to experiment with geometric structures, distortions and visual effects to create a harmonious composition in my works. Lately I have also been adapting some structures with my letters, emulating objects and characters of popular culture of recent times. 24/7 Valencia: How do you see the ‘Street Art’ scene in Valencia? KROME: I think it’s incredible, there’s something for everyone. In general, the best thing is that there’s a lot of respect

between all the disciplines of street art, not like in other cities where it seems that “graffiti artists” and “urban artists” are in a constant war. On the other hand, in Valencia Street art and graffiti seems to have become a fashion. That’s not always good but at least we are getting much more popular support than a few years ago. 24/7 Valencia: Tell us something about your projects… KROME: Now and for some time my goal is to innovate or

create original works as Graffiti but trying new tools and alternative techniques, I seek to combine with people from opposite disciplines to mine in order to generate alternative fusions and that both parties benefit from creating an original work in which all parties have been creative in their own way. I was due to complete my law degree, specialising in civil and property law, in June 1999, but just a few months before, in January 1999, with just one subject pending on my degree, I decided to go to England. At school and college I had studied French, and as well as wanting an adventure, I wanted to improve my English skills. I knew that if I wanted to be in business, the language I needed to master was English. What was only set to be a couple of months ended up being four years of incredible experiences in the UK, studying the language to a good business level, as well as working and interacting with Article © 2020 24/7 Valencia

international companies and teams of people from the UK and across the world. When I returned to Spain, I completed a few courses – however, the law is something that is constantly evolving, so in order to keep up-to-date, it’s a subject I am always studying. What are the services you provide? As I mentioned I am specialised in civil and property law, which includes conveyancing, self-building, buying off-plan, new-build properties, boundary disputes, construction and structural defects. Basically, we deal with all possible legalities associated with buying or selling property, either as a home, or an investment.

Additionally, some of our clients require assistance with setting up all kinds of businesses, whether that’s bars, restaurants, or online companies, and in order to provide a full service for my clients, we also assist with Family Law matters. For example, I help my clients to draft wills to present to notaries, ensuring their wishes are protected under Spanish law. We handle rental contracts, deposits, trusts, power of attorney and valuations. Can you help English-speakers looking to buy property in the Valencia area? I have been helping English-speakers to buy, sell and rent properties for over 15 years now. How time flies! I worked for a private company but even prior to that, I’ve always helped family and friends, both from within Spain and further afield, with rental contracts, accompanying them to the notary on completion of sales, as well as offering advice on how to manage their relationship with their estate agents, which can sometimes prove tricky if estate agents aren’t regulated. As a lawyer, I have a legal obligation and duty of care to protect my clients’ best interests, which makes me a more consistent and reliable person to assist people with property purchases. After a few years, I figured I should do it for a living, especially as my English was superior to many lawyers out there advertising themselves as English-speaking. Brexit brought a long period of uncertainty, which is one of the worst things for business and for society in general. The British, and the rest of the world, didn’t know what was going to happen, and now that it has gone ahead, we’ve all realised that the world keeps turning! However, despite more barriers, borders (and paperwork!), the British will continue to travel and settle in other countries, because it’s in their blood! One thing I have noticed amongst my clients is that remote working is becoming more popular, and Spain is a fantastic place to do so. Many potential clients have asked me about Brexit, and whether it would affect them, and in what ways if they buy property in Spain. My answer has always been the same – I wish I had a crystal ball to know the answer for sure, but one thing that is certain is that nationality doesn’t affect your right to buy property in Spain. British people always have and always will own properties in Spain. What will be affected is the process of becoming a resident. Previous rules for members of the EU will no longer apply, but individuals are still able to apply to become a resident of Spain, just as those from Canada, South Africa, or China do, for example. I do not foresee any problems with Brits applying for residency. One handy tip for Brits in Valencia seeking advice – if you get an appointment at the police station in Patraix, (C/ Dels Gremis, 6, 46014) there

is a desk set up specifically to help UK citizens with residency matters and they will be treated as EU citizens until 15th March. However, this term could be extended. Could you tell us about your hobbies and interests outside of work? I practice Tai Chi and have been doing so since I arrived back in Spain in 2002. I read an article about it, and it piqued my interest, and then by chance I went to visit a couple of friends I hadn’t seen for some time and in a rather magical moment, my friend’s mother appeared – or should I say glided into the room with a big smile on her face, just radiating positive energy. She said “I’ve just come from Tai Chi.” I asked her whether she practiced and she told me she was the teacher! And there began my beautiful relationship with her and with Tai Chi. ELA VIN 24/7 Valencia:Tell us something about how your interest in music began... Ela Vin: My interest and connection to music goes back to my childhood. I started studying music at the age of nine after trying other disciplines such as dance. The truth is that, despite my young age, my parents always tried to cultivate other interests in their children. The effort and tenacity of my parents, my own, added to the passion for music of my yayo (grandfather) Florentino, which in some way he transmitted to his grandchildren… are the key for me to be able to write words & music today. There are also influences from my grandmother Petra. She was tough and stubborn, like a good Aragonese woman. I remember her always singing to us while she clapped and hit us on the legs to the beat of the song she sang to us. learned to play, from my maternal grandmother I inherited a gift for vocal melodies, tenderness and sensitivity. Those are my musical origins, which developed over time. I learned to play the accordion, which is rare here in Valencia. I finished my studies at the Professional Conservatory of Music in Valencia, specializing in clarinet. Some years have passed from that moment until this new musical phase. How do you see Valencia as a city of music? I think it’s a prolific city and a breeding ground for good musicians. As far as the circuit is concerned, perhaps it’s a bit inbred and there are very few places where you can easily play or that regularly. Then there is the issue of censorship of cultural bars that programme concerts and other artistic disciplines and that the ABACU association, fortunately, tries to

reverse. Without these spaces, part of the culture dies for both the sender and the receiver. Explain us something about the concept of your new album ‘Tlazohcamati’ and something about each song… ‘Tlazohcamati’ is a word of Nahuatl origin, an indigenous Mexican language, whose meaning alludes to gratitude in capital letters. It is a conscious “thank you” to the “other” that is sincere and full of love. This beautiful word came to me via a Mexican friend and, through a very strong heart and intuition, ended up being the name of my third work and first LP. This album differs from the previous recordings, first of all, because of the change in production.
