CITY OF BATS

the Holy Spirit while the bat has always been associated with witches, devils and the dark side of life. Small children and old ladies happily chase around and feed the disease-carrying pigeons in the Plaza de la Virgen but it would be hard to imagine them doing the same for a swarm of our winged mouse-like friends. The pigeons get all the grub while the animal which, as we will see, really provides a meaningful service to Valencia and has been its cultural icon for the last seven centuries has to hide away in the nooks and crannies of the city.

all the old ladies and small children in the Plaza de la Virgen. Bats are extraordinarily skilful navigators; the screeching noises are part of their advanced sonar system, which allows them to measure distances and perceive obstacles in total darkness. It is said that a bat can detect something the size of a human hair from 20 metres and, in fact, contrary to popular belief, many species have excellent eyesight. As for the ugly jibe, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Most humans probably wouldn’t do too well in a bat beauty contest.

You can find bats everywhere in Valencia. The symbolic version on the city’s crests, badges and municipal hardware and in the sculptured stonework of the main train station; and the real living animal, in the cracks and crevices of the city’s buildings or flapping about in the early evening twilight. There are four times as many patudo (long-fingered) bats in one cave in El Montgó mountain in Jávea than in the whole of France, and there are 22 different species throughout the Valencia Region but, for some reason, they have always had a bit of a bad press.

People are suspicious of bats; they only come out at night, and that’s probably to cavort with the prince of darkness. We know they are around but where are they hiding during the day? Probably closer to you than you think. In many ways they are similar to the increasingly evident drunken stag and hen parties at closing time in C/ Caballeros; their haphazard flight is anything but graceful, they don’t look like they know where they’re going and might clumsily flap into us at any moment. They’re given to making demonic screeching noises and, to be fair, they are pretty ugly. But let’s forget those prejudices and stick to the facts.

The best thing about bats, though, is their voracious appetite for mosquitoes. This is their true gift to the city. Considering Valencia was built on a swamp and is slap bang next to the huge mosquito breeding ground that is the lagoon of Albufera and the surrounding rice fields, without the minuscule caped crusaders we’d really be in trouble. Bats eat two thirds of the mosquitoes that enter the city, so if you’ve ever had an itchy, sleepless summer night, constantly woken by that horrible buzzing in your ear, remember, things could be so much worse.

That other city of Valencia perennial, the dove, is the symbol of peace and

It’s true that they only usually come out at night but that’s probably to avoid

Since November last year, a spectacular giant orange bat has been looking down over Avenida de Aragón from the Grada del Mar façade of the Mestalla stadium. The 90 metre-long murcielago was put up just in time for the visit of Barcelona (and, more pertinently, a rare visit from the new owner from Singapore) complete with photovoltaic cells, which capture solar energy during the day so it can flicker and shine at night, which to my mind makes it even cooler. But what is the thing with this city and its bats?

It is said that the Moors domesticated bats as a sort of medieval version of ‘Raid Mata Mosquitos’ but it was the conquering Christians who made the

twentyfoursevenvalencia 9

bat the symbol of the city. As with all things related with bats, the origins of this are obscure. One legend has it that on the morning of the Christian conquest of Valencia back in 1238, a large bat settled on the conquering King Don Jaume I’s tent which he took to be a good omen for victory. Another says that, during the battle, a bat attracted by the dragon on the King’s crown intercepted a Moorish arrow which was bound for his heart. A third tells of how the Moorish king kept a large bat, which was considered by all to be the guardian of the city. When the Christians captured and killed the Sultan’s pet, Valencia soon fell into their hands. The real reason for the adoption of the bat as a Valencian icon, however, was probably Don Jaume’s connections with the rather shadowy and mysterious order of Templar Knights who brought the king up as an orphan after his father’s death and were instrumental in

helping him to victory in Valencia. The bat was a key symbol of this enigmatic order, so our poor, pointy-eared pest controller was taken by Don Jaume as a symbol of the city in their honour. So it came to be that the bat now appears on the City’s crest and every manhole cover, streetlight, bin wagon and bus stop. It was the symbol of the Spook Factory, the disco at the centre of the burgeoning ‘80s Valencia techno scene and is the emblem for Las Fallas and Valencian cultural clubs such as ‘Lo Rat Penat’. It is also, of course, the symbol of the city’s two football teams and is displayed on the burgee of the city’s yacht club. Both Valencia CF and Levante UD have worn the bat on their shirts with pride from the outset. In an attempt to reduce their enormous debt and make the club more marketable worldwide (especially in Asia), Valencia CF has recently gone through a bit of an

image makeover and it has, of course, looked to its longstanding symbol to help enhance the brand (hence our big orange friend). This has not gone unnoticed by the Batman people at DC Comics, who claim they have the sole rights to the outstretched wing “flittermouse” and a legal claim has been filed against the club. Two things spring to mind; Don Jaume got there first (by about 700 years) and Valencia CF have been using the bat as a symbol since the club was founded in 1919. Batman first started dressing up in cape and tights 20 years later in May 1939 for issue 27 of DC Comics. So, learn to love the bat. Your life would be worse without them and they have been the symbol of this city way back since the time of the original ‘Dark Knights’. David Rhead and José Marín Article © 2015 24/ 7 Valencia

VALENCIA MUSIC Yes, I would like to. Valencia will always be a base and I have a fondness for the area but I do miss my language and the friends I have there. Could you describe the process of making this album? Was it recorded in Spain? Part of it was recorded in Valencia, in Río Bravo Studios, and part in Nashville, USA. Quite a few of the songs are guitar / vocal performances with some arrangements overdubbed afterwards. Four or five were recorded with a rhythm section in Nashville with producer Brad Jones. That’s been my recording scenario for the past two albums. Could you take us through each track of your new album, ‘The Embers of Time’? Some Days I’m Golden All Night It’s a phrase I wrote down on a piece of paper and then threw it into a song later. Funny, really, we went for a ‘70s ‘countrypolitan’ production on this one a la Nashville. Too Many Things on My Mind A strange bridge on this one, never done one like it before. It’s a reflection on modern society. Too much information!

JOSH ROUSE You have described this project as your “surreal expat mid-life crisis” album. What was going on in your mind and could you tell us about your time in therapy? After you’ve made 11 albums, it’s impossible to put one out under the pretext that it is just 10 songs that I thought were quality. It needs to be themed, thus I came up with that phrase so that the publicists have some angle. But, in fact, I did start some Gestalt therapy as I was Article © 2015 24/ 7 Valencia

feeling a bit isolated living here for so long and as well having a young family, responsibilities, etc… A career in a freelance profession such as music can be quite uncertain and unstable. While the lifestyle is agreeable to me, it can become stressful so I went to chat with someone and these songs were born out of those sessions. You and your family are based in the Valencia area. You have said that you are starting to miss living in the USA. Do you see yourself moving back eventually?

New Young Same type of theme as the last, yet more of a play on words. I bought a child seat that had ‘New Young’ written on the bottom and watched Neil Young performing on the BBC that same week... great performance. You Walked Through the Door Reflections, reflections… ha-ha! Quite a catchy tune with a nice chord change and a bit of dobro. Time One of the first songs I wrote on the record, just sort of fell out of the air. A song about ageing and the passing of time. Pheasant Feather It’s built around a poem I wrote a few years back while in Nebraska. Features

Ex-Pat Blues An older musical composition set to a poem I wrote about what the title suggests, isolation. FOOD

STRAWBERRY EXPLOSION! By Helen Westwater La Ola Fresca The month of May is all about strawberries and strawberries are hard to beat. Heartshaped and juicy, they have also been scientifically proved to reduce the risk of a heart attack through their high content of flavonoids (antioxidants) and are rich in potassium, the mineral that helps to regulate fluids and blood pressure. So if you are starting to feel the heat as the temperature warms up, they may be just the ticket for you. Try them with a splash of balsamic vinegar, black pepper, rocket leaves and feta cheese for a healthy salad or quite simply on their own.

Strawberry Explosion Ingredients • 320 gm / 11 oz digestive plain biscuits • 50 gm / 1 1/2 oz cocoa powder • 70 gm / 2 1/2 oz butter • 400 ml double cream, whipped • 300 ml condensed milk • Juice of 2 lemons, to taste • Juice from 10 strawberries (if you don’t have a juicer, extract the juice using a plastic sieve) • Extra strawberries, for decorating the top

That said, having given you all those health tips, now I’m afraid we are going to destroy all that with some truly bikini mission-defying ingredients for this month’s recipe of ‘Strawberry Explosion’, which will help to refresh you in other ways! You will need one loose-bottomed quiche pan tin, preferably non-stick. First, using a food processor (or in a plastic bag using a rolling pin) grind the biscuits to crumbs with the cocoa powder. Meanwhile melt the butter. Mix all the ingredients together and flatten down into the base of the tin. Leave to cool in the fridge for about one hour. Beat the cream until it forms soft peaks and stands up on its own. Fold in the condensed milk with a large spoon. The cream will flatten a bit but don’t worry as this will change when you add the lemon. Add the lemon bit by bit, leaving a little bit spare. Add the strawberry juice. Your mix will turn a ‘Princess Angel Delight’ pink and, with the citric acid, the sauce should start to thicken once more. Taste to adjust flavours and possibly add more lemon if your cream is not thick enough, being careful not to go past the point. Pile the cream mix on to the top of your prepared base and leave in the fridge Article © 2015 24/ 7 Valencia

RESTAURANT OF THE MONTH

*

LOTELITO

ROOMS & BAR We’re in the centre of the city for this month’s meal, or meals, should I say. Just next to the Teatro Principal on C/ Las Barcas, to be exact. Lotelito Rooms & Bar is a restaurant and bar with a hotel above. It has an extensive cocktail menu, great wine list, caters to the afterwork crowd early evening, pretty fine dining later on, and much later on it’s a cocktail bar, often with DJs and atmospheric music. Let’s talk about the venue first. It’s urban industrial chic, with bare brick walls and exposed trunking, metal strapping and air-con ducts, metal-grilled shelves of glowing liquors tower above the light wood stool-lined bar. It looks like every conceivable cocktail ingredient is lined up on the shelves. At the front of the long bar is a glass bar / cabinet of puddings, fruits and pastries. To the left of the space is a lounge area with low sofas, ideal for a drink with friends. There is constant music, at different volumes depending on the time of the day. The highly attentive and friendly waiters all wear white shirts with red braces and long, floor-length aprons. Moving on to the food, we were lucky enough to visit Lotelito twice last month, once to try their menú del día and the second time for dinner. We had a reservation for 21.45h. We walked through the Plaza del Ayuntamiento on our way and as we approached the restaurant, we saw around fifty people milling around outside. It looked like there was a party booked but as it turned out, there had been a party but it was all over. We entered and were seated at a table for two in the window, where we could watch the world go by. We ordered a bottle of PradoRey Roble, a 2011 Ribera del Duero (17€). It’s a delicious red wine, good value and perfect with most foods. We read through the menu and chose with difficulty, as everything sounded good

and what we could see going to other tables looked good, too – Crujientes de pato y foie con manzana asada (crispy duck and foie with apple sauce, 8.30€) and Langostinos crujientes con maíz y mojo picón con su esensia to share, which were prawns coated in crispy maize batter with a mojo dipping sauce for 11€. For our main courses, we chose one of the four burgers on offer, the ‘Bacco’, 200 gms of ground veal, topped with pancetta, mozzarella, red onion and a chimichurri sauce. D went for the Atún rojo vinagreta (seared red tuna with a vinaigrette of tomato, basil, sesame and soy). Presentation plays a big part in your dining experience at Lotelito. The crispy duck and foie arrived in a Chinese bamboo steamer, four crispy spring rolls filled with duck and foie with a little dish of applesauce for dipping. The crispy prawns arrive on a wooden platter; six miniature Kilner jars with wired hinge lids, a skewered, crispcoated prawn poking out of the top of each jar sitting in mojo sauce. Both these starters not only looked great, they tasted great, too. I was nervous I had chosen the wrong thing but, once my burger arrived, I realised I needn’t have worried. A large slate held the burger, a wire basket of chips and top pots containing tomato ketchup and mustard. The meat was perfectly seared and was pink and juicy, the pancetta crunchy and mozzarella smothering it all was delicious. D’s red tuna lived up to expectations, too, and was perfectly seared with an excellent sauce. The restaurant was by now quite full and many of the tables around us had chosen to go with the Menú Tapas; there are three to choose from. All offer a selection of five tapas to share and the prices range from 18€ to 23.50€ to 28.50€ a head. They looked to be remarkable value and we will certainly return to sample them. They included what we had to start and the two more expensive options offered MiniBurgers, which were the biggest mini-burgers

I’ve seen anywhere. For the sake of this article we had a postre (dessert), a brownie with ice cream to share, well presented and very nice indeed! The wine list is well compiled of mainly Spanish wines, though there is a red from Chile and two whites from Australia and New Zealand. The wines range from around 12€ to around 50€ or so. The cava list is good (prices from 16€ to 47€). Perrier champagnes are served ranging from 45€ to 235€. There is a good cocktail menu with all the favourites including Agua de Valencia (one of those dangerous drinks that seems innocuous as you drink it, but if made properly has a kick) for 8€ a pop. I mentioned at the top of this article that we also tried the menú del día. It is great value at 11.50€ and consists of three starters to share, a main course including rice, pasta, fish & meat dishes and dessert, all served with great flair and beautifully prepared and seasoned. The basis is Mediterranean in terms of the freshness and the ingredients. Lotelito regularly holds art exhibitions and presentations related to food, literature, fashion and more. At the moment there’s an exhibition on the walls at the moment of ‘vintage’ iron and tinwork, all for sale at very reasonable prices. Tim Birch

BLANQUITA BAR Blanquita Bar is set in one of Valencia’s most atmospheric plazas in the centro histórico, with a lovely view of the old town with its popular square, pastel-coloured buildings and it is great for people watching! It is a mere stone’s throw from the Central Market and the clearly visible La Lonja building, so easy to find. It has become a big hit with both working locals and visitors from around the world. It’s a combination of good food at quite reasonable prices given the quality of the cuisine, the choice on offer, the wonderful setting and amiable & informed service. Conveniently, this restaurant bar is open every day from the morning to past midnight. Enjoy a mellow breakfast in the tranquil square with a croissant + juice + cappuccino for around 3.50€. From Monday to Sunday, there is a menu of the day at lunchtime for just 10.90€ with two dishes, dessert, bread and a drink included. Conveniently, the menu is in Spanish, Italian, English and French! For starters, you can choose between fried squid, grilled cuttlefish or their patatas bravas, which are fried potatoes with garlic mayonnaise and spicy tomato sauce. A healthy option is the Ensalada Valenciana with lettuce, tomato, onion, seedless black olives, corn, egg, tuna and carrot. Presented on trendy oval shaped plates, we savoured this ‘Valencia salad’ as the ingredients looked as fresh as they tasted. They also do a nice roasted

chicken Caesar salad. Salads range from 7€ – 10.50€. The main dishes include a tasty grilled chicken breast or the succulent grilled pork with cheese, egg, bacon and potatoes. Enjoy a filling Pizza margherita for 9€ with tomato sauce and mozzarella. We have tried their paella several times, which we have always found to be evenly cooked, a reasonable portion and nicely weighted, too. It always takes a while to finish! For dessert, this time around we savoured their attractive and homemade tasty cheesecake, which was firm and filling. It was beautifully presented on a rectangular black base and served with chocolate-powdered crème. We finished off with their increasingly popular ‘frappuccino’, which is the famous Italian coffee but with ice. Even though it is not officially on the menu, it is a big hit with customers in the know! Their extensive carta is easy to use. Each dish is written in Spanish, English, French and Italian and includes the ingredients for many of them. You have a great choice of tapas to savour with an average price of around 6.50€…including ham and cheese, puntillas (fried baby squid) as well as fried prawns, peppers or croquetas of cod or ham. Bocadillos include tortilla, pork and hamburger choices like the ‘BB King’, which is their very own Blanquita burger! Meat lovers can enjoy their choice of three cazuelitas for 7€ each, which includes the Spanish chorizo (spicy sausage, potatoes, egg and pepper). Experts at making pizza, they have three types to enjoy, including a tempting

prosciutto e funghi (tomato, mozzarella, cooked ham and mushrooms) for 10€. Paella lovers can enjoy their choice of three paellas including chicken, seafood, and vegetable choices. There’s a good choice of refreshing drinks to go with your food, including fruit juices like tomato, orange, pineapple and peach. On the alcohol front, they have sangria and the famous ‘Agua de Valencia’ (cava, orange juice, vodka and gin!) by the jug for 18€, as well as a good selection of beers and Spanish wines. Spanish red wines served by the glass and bottle including Rioja and Añacal and they also have Monte Blanco white wine and rosados, too. Enjoy cocktails like Negroni, mojito, caipirinha and spritz for 7€. They do a good range of gins including Bombay Sapphire, Tanqueray, Beefeater and more for a refreshing gin & tonic in the sunshine. This is the life… Spring in Spain! 24/7 Valencia team Blanquita Bar Plaza Dr Collado, 9 (near La Lonja) (Zona Carmen) Tel: 96 391 59 66 http://blanquita.es Facebook Blanquita Plaza Collado Open Monday – Thursday 10.00h – 24.00h Friday – Sunday 10.00h – 01.30h

GLAMOUR

GLAMOUR

Como dice la famosa canción ‘this boots are made for walking’…y para ir a la moda.

VALENCIA FOOTBALL

EUROPEAN FOOTBALL AT MESTALLA NEXT SEASON Europa League football is already confirmed for Mestalla next season, but the much bigger scalp of a place in the Champions League continues to remain in the balance. Currently, it seems the two Madrid clubs and Barcelona are going to grab the automatic spots but Valencia are in a dogfight with Sevilla for a fourth place finish, a position that would ensure entry into the qualification phases of the most prestigious club tournament in the world. Valencia’s April campaign started with two draws, a stalemate at home to Villarreal and then a point from Athletic Bilbao in San Mamés. The Villarreal game was a big disappointment with few chances as both midfields cancelled each other out. Valencia looked to be taking all three points from their Basque counterparts when Rodrigo De Paul put the visitors ahead on the hour mark. However, with the game almost over, former Valencia favourite Aritz Aduriz scored from what replays proved was an offside position. In all honesty, the home side deserved a draw from the encounter but it was a particularly harsh way for Valencia to lose two precious points in what had been a valiant defensive display.

Levante at home followed next, and the Valencia city derby brought the best out of the hosts who were two goals to the good by half time, courtesy of a brace of spectacular headers from Alcácer and Feghouli. Substitute Negredo rounded off the convincing victory with the final kick of the game to give the blanquinegres the bragging rights until their next encounter. Valencia then faced their toughest trip of the year to date, a visit to Nou Camp and Barcelona. One down inside a minute after the resurgent Suárez latched onto a pass from Busquets to fire home, things looked ominous for Nuno Espírito Santo and his team. In recent seasons, Valencia teams would have capitulated under this start and lost the game heavily but not this current side, who rolled up their sleeves and began to outplay the Catalan side. They had a perfect opportunity to equalise on eight minutes when Piqué brought down Rodrigo in the area. Parejo stepped up and his unconvincing strike was saved by Claudio Bravo. Unperturbed, Valencia continued to create chance after chance, but for once lacked the killer instinct in front of goal. Despite having the better of the exchanges in the first half, they went into the interval trailing. In the second half, Barça crept further and further into the game but it was not until the third minute of injury time that they doubled the lead and secured the points. Valencia, searching for an equaliser, lost the ball and Messi broke away from the

half way line and tapped the ball home at the second attempt after Diego Alves had saved his initial shot. Despite the loss, it was a courageous performance against one of the world’s top teams that did not go unnoticed by the fans and media. With Valencia’s next game at home to Granada on the following Monday night the players had to wait patiently to rectify the defeat. Since Nuno took over at the club, every home game against Andalusian opposition has ended in victory for Valencia and the team has scored at least three goals in the process. This time they went one better and beat the struggling side from the south by four goals to nil. Javi Fuego calmed the nerves a little with a bullet header from a Parejo corner in the 26th minute, but a second goal was required to take the tension out of the Mestalla atmosphere. When Valencia were awarded a penalty soon after, all the fans waited expectantly to see who might replace Parejo as the penalty taker, after his poor miss at Barcelona. When Parejo himself picked up the ball to place on the spot, you could hear rumblings of discontent echoing around the stadium. However, the Valencia captain held his nerve and fired the penalty with determination to put his side two goals to the good. From that point, Los Chés never looked back and additional goals from Feghouli and Negredo sent the home supporters home happy, knowing that European

twentyfoursevenvalencia 37 football of some sort would be gracing the city during the next campaign. After the away fixture coming up in May with Real Madrid, the visit to Rayo Vallecano looked the next most difficult on paper in Valencia’s run in. The team from the suburb of Vallecas in Madrid continue to punch above their weight and are renowned in La Liga as a formidable opponent amongst all the top clubs. The Campo de Fútbol de Vallecas is one of the most unusual grounds in La Liga. Behind one goal is a high wall containing advertising and, because of two blocks of apartments directly behind that, the ground officially only has three sides. Valencia started brightly and Negredo, who is affectionately known as “La fiera de Vallecas” (the beast of Vallecas), squandered two good chances against his hometown club early on. Disaster struck in the 19th minute when a tame-looking shot from Embarba was fumbled by Diego Alves and dropped over the line to give the home side the lead, against the run of play. The referee was then at the centre of controversy as he sent off the Rayo defender Morcillo for scything down André Gomes when he was through on goal. The contention arose because Negredo was in an offside position and had blocked another Rayo defender in a better position than Morcillo from making a tackle on Gomes. After consultation with his linesman, Vicandi Garrido ruled that Negredo’s actions did not impact the passage of play that resulted in the Gomes foul and his initial decision to award the visitors a free kick and send off Morcillo stood. To make matters worse for the home side, Parejo calmly stepped up after the commotion and planted the free kick in the bottom corner of Toni’s net to put Valencia back on level terms. The game then boiled over as first, Rayo’s manager Paco Jémez and then Rodrigo for Valencia got their marching orders. Jémez, who is rumoured as a potential successor to John Carver at Newcastle, saw red for persistently arguing with the

officials over the Morcillo sending off and Rodrigo lost his temper and retaliated to a Toni foul in the Rayo penalty area. Toni was lucky to stay on the field as he had already been booked and the goalkeeper was the instigator of the affray with Rodrigo. It seems that Valencia’s Hispano-Brazilian midfielder has not learnt from previous experiences, as he suffered a similar fate in a Copa del Rey encounter at the same stadium in December when he had once again lashed out at a Rayo player in retaliation. Eibar came next on the back of a 3-1 home defeat to Sevilla, and they suffered the same fate at Mestalla. The Basque side known as the armeros (gunsmiths) defended stoutly until a precision cross from Gayà found Otamendi to break the deadlock and give the home side a slender lead at the break. Two further goals from Parejo and Alcácer ensured the points, but Eibar’s plucky resistance was rewarded with a late consolation goal for Arruabarrena with a handful of minutes left on the clock. Levante UD remains just above the relegation zone and continue to just do enough to stay out of the bottom three. Fantastic away wins at Almería and Getafe and a draw in the Estadi Ciutat de València against Espanyol have helped the cause but a home defeat to Sevilla and heavy losses at Mestalla and at Real Sociedad highlight the club’s inconsistency this season.

However, the most telling result for Les Granotes (the frogs) last month was their 1-0 victory over fellow strugglers Córdoba. David Barral’s strike just before half time virtually ended Córdoba’s chances of avoiding the drop. Levante’s last match of the season is at home to Elche and it could be that the winner of that game survives at the expense of the other. 24/7 VALENCIA May. If you’re not too sure where this club is, just keep an eye out for a quirky, cubelike building covered in neon lights. I know, neon lights again, it’s a port thing, consider them lighthouses for clubbers. You can dance to commercial & electro dance music with some of the hottest people in Valencia, physically and temperature-wise. Honestly, you try and dance in 29 degrees heat. But the heat is something you are just going to have to get used to in Valencia.

SUMMER BEFORE SUMMER: THE PORT IS OPEN! It’s on sunny, hot days like these that we remember why Valencia is one of the best places in Spain to live or to visit. The month of May has barely just begun, yet it feels like we are in the middle of July already. This is great news, however, because we can finally rip open our bin bag full of summer clothes, get the Panama hats out, and wear flip-flops, the comfiest attire of the year. It also means that the open-air clubs are opening! Meaning we can all make our way to the beach and sip on mojitos, yay! Let’s remember the cool clubs of the Port and the beach bars that have been shut for what seems like an eternity, and get clubbing! I would like to start off this month by talking about the all-too-famous L’Umbracle Club (Av. del Saler, 5). You can find this club in the City of Arts and Sciences part of Valencia, beside the big Darth Vaderlooking building in the river (Río Turia gardens). This is a very popular club in Valencia with the beautiful people, as it is open air, and always busy. You walk in to what feels like paradise, surrounded by palm trees, couches, cocktail bars and a lot of white. They only just recently opened their doors again to the people (1 May to be exact), and it’s been buzzing since. You should honestly check out this place out, and if you fancy splashing a bit of dosh, Article © 2015 24/ 7 Valencia

the VIP area is pretty awesome. It feels like you are in Miami, but without any jet lag or overpriced plane tickets. You will find Mya downstairs, which has electro house. Another benchmark for Valencia summer clubs is Ánimas del Puerto (Edificio Docks, Paseo de Neptuno), which can be found at the Port, you can’t miss it with its neon lights on the exterior of the building. Similar to L’Umbracle, this an open bar / club, serving refreshing cocktails with two styles of music to choose from, ranging from commercial to electro music. You can go there on 9 May; it is the opening night, and then any weekend night from then on. This is a beautiful bar, and you’ll be hearing a lot about it. You can also visit Docks Club (Paseo de Neptuno), which is actually in the same building as Ánimas. This club has been open all year, so you might have already been. It’s a great place to go, with a young and very alive crowd. The music there is commercial, like most places at the port. You can even try their shisha/hookah pipes while drinking some pretty good cocktails. If I had to go there on a particular day, I would probably check out 16 May. The entrance fee is reasonably priced and includes a drink, and it’s open till the early hours of the next day. While you are down the Port, you might want to check out High Cube (Marina Real Juan Carlos, 1) they will be opening their doors to the public on Thursday, 14

A more bohemian and authentically Valencian choice by the beach is Guernica Playa dance club on C/ Eugenia Viñes, 227, which has a lovely terraza outside, indoor dance floor and is popular with couples and groups looking for authentic ‘Guernica groove music’, electronica and even world music. The DJs are experienced and the cocktails are excellent! The last place I would like to mention before leaving the Port entirely is Akuarela Playa (C/ Eugenia Viñes, 152). This club is actually a bit further down the beach and is open any Saturday of the month. You can dance to house music if you want to get away from the commercial stuff. The entrance is free until 02:30h and after that you pay, but this includes a drink. You might want to be present for their big inauguration on 8-9 May. And finally, I would like to tell everyone that Koh Tao Club (C/ Baix Vinalopó, 1A, Mislata) will be returning on 16 May for just one night. If you enjoy techno and techno lovers, you might want to attend this unique night. There are limited places available so make sure you part of the select few who will be there. This is on the west side of Valencia, crossing the river, so make sure you can get in before going. I hope you all find your way and have an amazing time. If ever you find yourself complaining about the heat, just remember that it is 7 degrees in Helsinki and most definitely raining in the UK. Finally, remember what Justin Timberlake sung while in ‘N Sync, “It’s gonna be May…” So, make the most of it and have a good one!

VALENCIA WORLD feel, who they were, and what was going to happen in their lives. That always fascinated me; I encountered astrology again and have never been separated from it since then. In conclusion, I was formed with skills and esoteric knowledge since birth. My thirst for knowledge has meant that I have never stopped trying to learn about many types of alternative therapies and to increase my spiritual knowledge. What is the yoga that you practice and teach and what are its benefits?

SIRIO OF CENTRO URANIUM Tell us something about background and experiences.

your

My name is Sirio. I was born in Valencia but I grew up on the island of Ibiza. Since childhood I have been interested in increasing one’s own personal development, and to understand the complexities of people’s motives in life, both internal and external. I soon started to learn about astrology, the tarot, numerology and the interpretation of dreams. I was fortunate enough to have an enlightened father who was a chemist and astrological alchemist. He taught me from a young age to think about symbols and always to seek knowledge and the real truth, to be sceptical of socially accepted beliefs and not to accept them without analysing them thoroughly. He explained to me about theosophy, alchemy, the works of Gurdjieff, Alice Bailey, H. Blavatsky…they all made me think about planetary consciousness, the stars, plants, entities from other dimensions and about the relation between the different worlds of consciousness. My father’s sister taught me the Tantric exercises of Carlos Castaneda from a young age. I also discovered in childhood that my elder brother and his friend knew of a code that would predict how they would Article © 2015 24/ 7 Valencia

I was trained in Kundalini Yoga and I love this type of yoga. It’s very spiritual. We chant mantras, we practice ‘Breath of Fire’, we awaken an energy that is both devotional and at the same time vital. Kundalini is a thorough practice that works on the chakras of the yoga students. It awakens the consciousness quite quickly; it empowers the creative being that lies inside all of us. I am also a teacher of Chi Kung and other disciplines that I combine with Kundalini yoga. In this sense, my yoga that I sometimes label ‘Creativo-Terapéutico’ includes Chi kung exercises, with dynamic exercises for groups and in pairs, so in this way the teaching is both clear and effective. We include martial arts exercises of selfempowerment and activation of the third chakra. We get together on Mondays and Wednesdays at 10.00h, and Tuesdays and Thursdays at 20.00h. You are invited to come along! Benefits? To awaken and balance kundalini energy in all your chakras. Spiritual intelligence, wisdom about the body, peace, vitality, faith in oneself, a silent interior, intuition, a sudden understanding, an increase in the synchronicity in your life. To sum up: physical, emotional and mental health. Can you tell us about Astrological Reiki? Astrological Reiki is a multi-disciplinary cleansing system that I devised. I am a master of Usui and Unitary Reiki as well as expert in astrology and EFT (mental and emotional re-programming). In essence, Astrological Reiki constitutes a powerful combination of reiki, astrology and EFT. It is a very complete therapy, which is developed on seven levels as well as two more levels as a master. You learn to

balance the four elements, all your chakras, and to understand yourself energetically and psychically, to balance things concerning yourself and your external situation, including how to balance specific energy or to clear energy of a patient at any date in their life. Astrological reiki is a form of cleansing that is very deep with many tools and with specific capacities. On 15 – 17 May, we will be doing a course of the seven initiations of the chakras, with treatment and diagnosis included. It’s a beautiful experience, deep, transforming and unforgettable. For more information: www.reikiastrologico. net YouTube: reiki astrologico completo. What other courses are offered in Centro Uranium? Uranium is a multidisciplinary centre with yoga, massage, reiki and alternative therapies. We offer different types of wonderful massages: deconstructive, sports, relaxing, energizing and pseudotantric, which combines reiki, sound therapy, acupressure, bio-magnetic therapy, and the balancing of chakras. We also offer astrology and Tarot readings not just from the perspective of predicting but also a psychological one. I enjoy making your path a clearer one, your development in self-knowledge and making the right decisions. We are united with different types of meditations (traditional, dynamic, creative) that we offer every Wednesday at 18.30h. We also offer holistic therapy or TEG (Global Elevation Treatment), Reiki synthesis, bio-magnetic therapy, sound therapy, kinesiology, EFT, massage, Bach flower remedies, hugging therapy and deep conversation. To sum up, an integral treatment of body, mind and energy. Always with care, wisdom and understanding, we accompany individuals and groups on their journey. Uranium is now seven years old!!! More info at www.centrouranium.com What is your philosophy of life? My philosophy is eclectic, personal and transpersonal. I do not follow any one religion, guru or belief system. But I have investigated many systems of knowledge, as much in theory and in practice, and they

have all taught me something useful that I have then incorporated into my teachings. From the world I learn love, beauty, wisdom and that we are beautiful mirrors on the path to enlightenment. I love doing mantras, harmonic singing, the asanas of yoga, chi kung stretches, loving and innocent hugging, EFT tapping and a profound commitment to look after the body, energy and consciousness. I like to help people recuperate clarity and to love themselves more each day. We are free to experiment in this life!!! To laugh and to play, to love, to kiss, to make love and dance, to sing and

contemplate the beauty and wisdom within us and that which surrounds us, opening ourselves up to this life. Spiritual practices and therapies help us defeat limitations and feelings of guilt and help us believe in ourselves, in people and in life!!! To be at peace with oneself, to know how to be, to love and to accept, that is my main wisdom in life. Aside from that, I open myself each day to cooperate and create a community with heart. Thank you ‘24/7 Valencia’, for permitting me to share this with your readers. See you all in Uranium, I wait for you with a loving, white light of a hug.
