CAKES, KITES AND COFRADÍAS EASTER IN THE POBLATS MARÍTIMS OF VALENCIA All that remains of the old Barcelona railway tracks, which used to cut off the Cabanyal and the other seafront areas from the rest of the city, are a few spaghetti western-style stations in Boulevard de la Serrería. The lines now go underground but the years of separation have meant that the Poblados Marítimos have always seemed to try to do their own thing. The city of Valencia doesn’t really go for it at Easter. The big destinations at this time of year are Andalusia and Castile and Leon, whose Holy Week processions are famous

all over the world. Valencia is only just recovering from its own mass festival and everyone seems to be completely Fallased-out. While the rest of city is scrambling to get out to the mountains for a bit of detox and nature, you may find it’s all happening down at the beach. There are more than 20 different cofradías or brotherhoods in the Cabanyal, who work together to organise the Semana Santa Marinera, with impressive names such as Hermandad de Vestas del Santísimo Cristo del Buen Acierto (or, as it’s translated on their website, “the Hooded Brotherhood of the Saintly Christ of the Wise Move”). Many of their members have only just folded up their Fallas gear and put away their bangers for next year but, being Valencians, this doesn’t in any way dampen their enthusiasm to start getting dressed up and parading round the streets all over again at the drop of a pointy hat. Valencian seaside folk have a reputation for ploughing their own furrow and that doesn’t stop at supporting Levante, eating battered pescaditos by the ton

and protesting against the extension of Av. Blasco Ibáñez. In Andalusia, Semana Santa is an explosion of flowers and icons, a colourful orgy of very public grief. In Castile and Leon, Easter processions are dark, reverential celebrations of sombre piety. In the streets of the Cabanyal, it’s a particularly Valencian take on the whole thing. There’s no doubting the religious devotion of the Cabanyal cofradías and there’s a definite attempt to keep it suitably solemn, but here things tend to be a little more playful and colloquial. And this being Valencia, it’s all rounded off with the ubiquitous big firework display. First and foremost, peculiar to the Cabanyal, the emphasis is not on the pain and suffering of the Passion, it’s much more of a sort of Resurrection cavalcade. The icons are brought out for procession, but not for the Valencians lies the honour, as in other parts of Spain, of carrying the crushingly heavy wooden models on their shoulders through narrow streets. Here they prefer to put the things on wheels and swan along behind them in their Sunday best.

twentyfoursevenvalencia 9

The procession trails down the C/ de la Reina to the sound of traditional music and muted bass drum. While there are a suitable quota of Nazarenes (those blokes who look like medieval wizards dressed in long capes and cone-shaped hats and hoods), Valencians soon realised it was much more fun to dress up as a Roman soldier or a crusader. While there might be the odd centurion in processions elsewhere, in the Cabanyal there seem to be whole legions of them. In fact any biblical character will do, including generously bearded Herods and scantily clad Salomes, all of them local people with fathers and mothers passing down their part to their sons and daughters. There are games for the kids and much waving and posing for photos for the watching neighbours and families. Then it’s off to the bar for paella where you might find Pontius Pilate at a table having a well-earned beer with Barabbas or Mary Magdalene and Judas sharing a plate of calamares. On Saturday night there will be a castillo by a local pyrotechnician. One curious aspect is that some cofradías have the right to ask for the

release of a prisoner. The powers-thatbe consider each petition and a prisoner is released who then takes part in the procession. The cofradías usually put forward a minor criminal from the local community. It is, of course, no reflection on the area that in the Cabanyal they always seem to have plenty of candidates to choose from. One story goes of a local lad who was doing time for burglary in Madrid and was then released and paraded round the streets to the great embarrassment of his mother, who had told all the neighbours he was away working in Asturias. In Valencia, to everything there is a season and Easter is the time for flying kites. The best place for this is Malvarrosa. The sky is awash with the things over Easter weekend and the beach is littered with bored kids waiting for their dads to stop hogging the string and let them have a go or at least let them go home and play on their PlayStations. The 18th international kite festival called the Festival Internacional del Viento will take place at Malvarrosa the week after Easter on 11-12 April. Teams will be taking part from all over

Europe (UK, Italy, Germany, Portugal, Greece, France, Belgium…) and the rest of the world, well, someone’s coming from New Zealand. Then, of course, everybody forgets about kites again until next year. No celebration would be complete without its typical food. At Easter, Valencians eat panquemados (mona de pascua), a sweet cake in the shape of an animal decorated with dyed boiled eggs and longaniza de pascua, similar to a pepperami in size and shape but not as spicy or oily and it isn’t made entirely of rubber and cardboard. These are usually ‘enjoyed’ in the open air as a sort of midafternoon picnic often at the beach. So, if the weather’s nice, get yourself down to the Poblados Marítimos this Easter. If it rains all weekend (as is usually the case), stay at home and watch ‘Ben Hur’ or ‘The Robe’ on TV.

VALENCIA MUSIC Como al Pe del Suplico Estuve Foreign musicians have often asked me how come I do not play flamenco music, given that I was born in Spain and I am half Andalusian. Apart from not liking this kind of cliché, I’ve never known what to say. I have had a few collaborations with flamenco artists; yet I have never gone deep enough into its palos (song forms) to be able to claim that I ‘play flamenco music’. I was contacted by Raul Micó, a lively cantaor from Villena (Valencia) regarding the possibility of collaboration. Even before I heard him sing, I liked his open mind, initiative and freshness. When I had the opportunity to listen to his voice, I was highly impressed by its strength and precision. O gios tou lykou

albums, ranging from traditional Valencian music to Renaissance, Greek and Sephardic music.

Efrén López really is a musical phenomenon. Born in a working-class barrio of Valencia in 1972, he left school with no qualifications due “to a less than perfect relationship with authority”.

Could you take us through the tracks on your new solo album, ‘El Fill del Llop’ (‘The Son of the Wolf’)?

He got involved in music as a sound technician in studios and as a session musician, which involved a tour of Colombia and Peru as an electric guitarist where he bought the first of his many exotic, acoustic instruments that he is now world famous for playing. These include the mandolin, sitar, oud, hurdy-gurdy, medieval lute, viola, tamboura and many more! He is fascinated with Mediterranean and medieval music as well as the sound of instruments from lands as far as away as India and Afghanistan. Jimmy Page and Davy Graham would surely have approved!

I wrote this piece to express my gratitude and pay homage to the various masters with whom I was fortunate to study the Turkish bağlama (lute). I was challenged to write a zeybek “so slow that each bar lasts a week”. This heavy dance of Turkish origin has always fascinated me.

López is a composer and virtuoso musician who has played in prestigious concert halls in the U.S.A., China, Holland, Germany, Morocco, Greece, Norway, Poland, France, Turkey, and more with other masters in their musical fields. Kurtoğlu Zeybeği

Plaerdemavida “Pleasure-of-My-Life” is the name of a character in ‘Tirant lo Blanch’, a medieval Valencian novel by Joanot Martorell. When I have a daughter, this will be her name, with soundtrack and all. It was recorded in an isolated place in Fuente la Reina (Castellón region). Some days, the house was surrounded by snow and there was no electricity. Fortunately, there was an ample storeroom to enable me to survive in case of nuclear war or a zombie attack.

Kapetanianá is a village in Crete, situated at the foot of a mound which, seen from certain points, clearly evokes the profile of a sleeping man. It is full of legends and old pagan traditions that Christianity has adapted for its sake. The place is isolated from the region’s urban centres. It was only in the 1970s that people started building roads here, enabling communication with the outside world. This was when the first foreign tourists arrived in the village…tall, blond, long-haired hippies with whom clear conversation was not possible. They looked so different from the villagers that the latter wondered if they were human. Gradually, the understandable initial mistrust eased off and gave way to a growing sympathy, probably because the foreigners started to learn the basics of the Greek language with their Nordic accents. Local women would go out of their way in competing to prepare hot dishes for the hippy house and each family came to adopt their own hippy as though it was some sort of pet: “Giorgi, can you do me a favour and feed my tourist for a few days? I have some errands to run in town.” Aralik One winter when I was visiting Istanbul, a ney (flute) musician named Meira Segal asked me to help her with ‘homework’ for her makam class (Turkish Ottoman modal system). We wrote this piece together. ‘Aralik’ means December in Turkish, which was the

twentyfoursevenvalencia 11

EFRÉN LÓPEZ

month we wrote this piece, but it also means an interlude or space between two objects. Asbe Sangi This piece is dedicated to Mazdak Ferydooni, an Iranian luthier who lives in Greece and has built the Kurdish tanbur lute that I have used to write it. Most of the times when I create a new piece, inspiration comes from the sound itself and the places where the special tone and character of each instrument take me. Mazdak, you will know why I have called it “stone horse” in Farsi. Lo boièr - Iria I learnt this song from the late María Lafitte. To enrich the melodic line, we created a thick layer of vocal harmonies and shofars, the Jewish ceremonial horns. The lyrics of this song, which has become like a hymn over time, refers to a cryptic passage whose coded messages are about the extermination of the Cathar people by the Crusaders sent by Rome in the 12th century. In the chorus one can hear the cry of alarm that the Cathars used: A…E…I… O…U!!! Vallsabollera Simone invited me to her ‘house’ in the French Cerdagne. Actually, the brave and stubborn Simone lives alone in a Cathar castle inherited from her family and located

in an idyllic setting towering above a beautiful valley. As though this was not enough, the site is called Valcebollère, the Onion Valley. Indeed, a type of wild onion grows there, making it a paradise for all those addicted to these bulbs, as is my case. Simone is a great music lover and she regularly organizes medieval music concerts in one of the rooms of the castle. To thank her for her hospitality, I have written this piece inspired by the memory of those splendid landscapes. Bourrées de la Carrasca del Vaca This is a French dance on the hurdy-gurdy…a powerful instrument full of possibilities and headaches for those, like me, who are addicted to its sound. There is a curious history behind the title of this piece. I decided to give this composition the name of my mother’s Valencian village. Then I realized that my father might resent the absence of his native village near Jaén. Aiming to find a Solomonic solution to a possible ValencianAndalusian conflict, I used a computer programme that could locate the exact geographical point halfway between the two locations on earth. I entered the addresses of where each of my parents was born and fell upon ‘The Oak of the Cow’, a monumental old tree in the Albacete region. It was a perfect name for my new composition, a name that would not jeopardize the harmony of the López-Sanz family.

Azinhaga I was asked to write a theme for an international music festival in Portugal based on a writer I greatly admired, José Saramago, the first Portuguese to be awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. I chose the name of the song as the village of his birth and tried to blend musical elements from my country with other ‘Portuguese’ sounds, using a Valencian guitarro, a viola braguesa and a cavaquinho, among other instruments. Abracadabra The magic word of Aramean origin means “to create, to give shape with a word”. I believe this is what many of us musicians and artists in general are seeking: to give reality to ideas, by means of sound in my case. It is obvious that the power of music is huge, and if we cannot appreciate it these days it may be due to saturation, what with the bad melodies and meaningless sounds we are exposed to daily and unwittingly, in transport and public buildings or through audiovisual media…

BANANA TARTE TATIN By Helen Westwater La Ola Fresca Like all the best recipes, this one is a descendant of a little mistake by a shrewd cook who didn’t want to waste her seemingly spoilt ingredients. Back in the 1880s, in a hotel run by the Tatin sisters, one of the sisters accidentally burnt the apples for a pie she was making … but decided to use them by putting pastry over the top and baking the dish anyway. The result went down a treat and carved the Tatin sisters a place in culinary history. For a variation of the theme, here we use our own interpretation of a Jamie Oliver recipe using bananas instead of apples. What really helps with making Tarte Tatin is a good, bottom-heavy round pan or an ovenproof frying pan. If you have the right tin, I’m sure you will agree that this recipe is one of the easiest things to make but at the same time a showstopper! It is a dessert, which has top place on the menu of La Ola Fresca every Friday and rivals our own Señor Brownie in fans! Preparation Heat oven to 220C/ 425F / Gas mark 7 Chop the butter into pieces and place with the sugar in your chosen tin on a gentle heat on the stove. Stir, allowing the butter to melt down and mix with the sugar. Meanwhile, always keeping an eye on the caramel, peel and slice the bananas longways. Add a squeeze of lemon. Now all the butters and sugars have melted down, turn your full attention to the caramel and turn up the heat using a heat-resistant spoon, taking care not to burn yourself. Do not exceed the point of caramelization. If it starts to smoke it is going too far and the sugar will turn bitter. When your caramel has reached a gorgeous molten-gold point, remove Article © 2015 24/ 7 Valencia

from the heat and add the zest of orange. Standing back a bit from the pan and being careful not to splash yourself with the caramel, gently add the sliced bananas, filling the base. Immediately top with the ready-made pastry. Push the pastry down to fit snuggly over the bananas and leave an overlapping edge over the side of the tin. Cut off any excess pastry, place the Tatin dish on an oven tray and put it near the top of the pre-heated oven. After about 15 minutes, if the pastry has risen nicely and is starting to brown, move to the next tray down in the oven and cook for a further 15-20 minutes until you are sure that the pastry is well cooked. Remove from the oven and while the dish is still hot, quickly turn out onto a plate so that the bananas are now on top. If there is any caramel left in the pan, return it to the heat until the caramel releases sufficiently and then pour the juices over the bananas. Finally give a little squeeze of orange juice over the top of the caramel. Inhale and wait for your friends to come to worship!

RESTAURANT OF THE MONTH

JAM! Bar & Kitchen Calle Roteros in the Barrio del Carmen was already a great little street for bars and restaurants and now it’s even better with the arrival of a new place to eat and drink. JAM! Bar & Kitchen is a new restaurant from Englishman James Methven, whose previous venture was Sol i Lluna on C/ del Mar. James took a bit of a sabbatical for a couple of years but is back, batteries recharged, with JAM! and very interesting it is, too... We arrived at JAM! to a very warm welcome from James and chatted whilst he showed us to our table. James is justly proud of the look and feel of the restaurant. JAM! has great ambience, a lovely open feeling and at its heart is a bar where you could happily down a drink or two with some tapas. Above the bar is a banner showing the Tyris craft beers on offer and James, a great fan of cervezas artesanas, intends to offer more and more over time. It’s all whitewashed walls, with brick features and a brown-tiled floor. The little square tables have mismatched chairs and there is a settee under a shiny, polishedsteel JAM with lights on the wall that James made with his own bare hands. It lights up – we got a demonstration of it lit and it looked great but, as the man said, “It’s a little bit bright!” And so to the menu, attached to a clipboard is a small but very interesting menu consisting of some 20 items, which we perused while we savoured the marinated olives and drank from

a bottle of 2011 ‘Albufera’ from Utiel/ Requena, smooth and very good value at 12€ a bottle. This is a highly original menu, which covers all the bases from the Middle East to Spain, Italy, Greece, the U.S.A., Mexico and the UK – all in 20 dishes. We decided to try the (if you can pronounce it, you can have it) Kolokithokftedes con tzatziki (five little balls of deliciousness, deep fried courgette balls in a light batter, topped with a Greek yoghurt dressing, 5.50€) and Brochetas de pollo con satay de almendras (skewered chicken with a tasty almond satay sauce, 7.50€). D decided on, wait for it, Fish & Chips and mushy peas with tartar sauce (7.90€), perfectly fried pieces of fish and excellent mushy peas, all served on a piece of newsprint. I had the Pulled pork, slow-cooked pork served in a bun with coleslaw and a barbecue sauce with a little basket of chips (9.50€). All I ever read about in London restaurants is Pulled pork, it’s every bit as good as it’s cracked up to be. There was a constant stream of people popping in and out throughout our meal for just a drink with amigos or a full meal. We met up with a couple of friends who just happened to pop by the same evening, and it was soon obvious that this is going to be one of those hangouts where people do just that.

are all dishes he loves to cook. He did most of the work on the interior himself and is really happy with the outcome. He insisted we try the NY cheesecake, a deconstructed version served in a tall ice-cream glass and topped with fresh strawberries. I would never have chosen it myself, but it really was quite delicious. JAM! is already deservedly popular. As I said at the top of this article, it’s a great place for a drink and a tapa or for a more full-fledged meal. Both the menu and the wine list are interesting and well-priced. JAM! serves a menú del diá, including a drink and postre, for just 11€. Tim Birch JAM! ETAPAS ‛Etapas’ is a new concept in the art of enjoying a wide range of Spanish tapas with the option of sharing your food as a couple, in a group or just on your own, with reasonable prices to match. It is very easy to find as it is just off Plaza del Ayuntamiento. You can’t get more central than that! This bar / restaurant is set on two floors with a bar downstairs. On display you will find freshly-made traditional paella in a wide pan, and an ample selection of good quality tapas including tortillas, ham or chorizo & cheese pinchos, portions of pizza, a range of tasty salads, sandwiches, mussels and more. The bar top is lined with eye-catching and individual ceramics with that trendy, lived-in look. There are also high chairs with long tables to enjoy unhurried dining at leisure and live football matches and music videos on the ground level, too. There is a friendly international staff on hand to help you with your tapas choices. The feel of the bar is international, clean, attractive, fresh and welcoming. Dig the old-style high stools and warm wood vintage finish of the tables. Upstairs is the restaurant…a more formal, peaceful dining area with no music, lower lighting, spacious mirrors and relaxed vibe. The sea-blue walls (with dark blue napkins to complement them) create a ‘sea of calm’ and a really mellow atmosphere for dining. On the rainy Saturday night that we chose to dine here the upstairs was nestling with youngish, courting couples and groups from all over the world, both locals from Spain and visitors from the U.S.A. and Britain. Meanwhile, the bar downstairs was frequented by an older crowd of Valencianos and visitors from the continent in their 40s and 50s. It made for an interesting contrast, as if the two floors were from rather different worlds!

Conveniently, the menu is in English, Spanish, Italian, French and Russian so it makes for an international crowd and it is easy to choose the type of tapas that you are seeking. We were greeted by the highly experienced & courteous head chef and our amiable, helpful and informed black-clad waiter, Borja, made us feel very welcome throughout the dinner. We kicked off with some Jamón Ibérico, which was a tasty Spanish ham, lightly cut, easy on the palate and sprinkled with olive oil, presented on a trendy black plate replete with a touch of fennel. To accompany our meal, Borja recommended a Crianza Ramón Bilbao 2012 from the Rioja region, which lasted the course, as it was a full-bodied red wine with a pleasing finish and a longish aftertaste. Upstairs, the tapas are presented in smallish, round pans so you can choose tapas for yourself or share and the prices are reasonable too. We decided to savour the local Ensaladilla Valenciana, which was a very fresh, appealing local salad from la huerta (the land) that was fresh with sliced red onions, corn, lettuce and carrot. A pot glass of the legendary Andalusian Salmorejo purée had a real zest with a nice combination of tomato, bread, olive oil, eggs, garlic, ham and vinegar. We shared both succulent tapas over glasses of the heady Spanish red wine that went down a treat as a conversation about family and local festivities began to flow… We enjoyed a healthy choice of Mejillones al vapor, a smallish pot of mussels in a lemony vinaigrette & white wine broth, which we enjoyed with fresh bread. Our favourite dish of the night was the generously portioned All i pebre, which was presented in an earthenware casserole pot. This is a soupy & famous Valencian speciality dish of eels

with garlic, toasted bread, almonds and paprika. It was easy on the eye and really filling! We asked Borja to choose for us a typical postre (dessert) of ‛Etapas’ and we were impressed with his enthusiastic recommendation of the Café crème brulée. It was artistically presented on a black, rectangular dish decorated with three pretty stripes of chocolate powder-dotted white cream and a pot of caramelized sugar-burnt topping of coffee dessert, lovingly prepared with a hand-held torch. The fluffy & tasty dessert that we shared went down a treat as it was not too sweet, a great way to end a really satisfying and memorable meal of shared tapas. The dinner was not too heavy on the stomach or wallet, making it just right for a light-hearted, romantic dinner night out and also a more informal business lunch during the day. On this memorable spring night, we went home singin’ in the rain! 24/7 Valencia Team Etapas C/ San Vicente, 25 (just off Plaza del Ayuntamiento) Zona Plaza Ayuntamiento No number or website available yet Tapas to sample: 2.99€ – 11.90€ Tapas from the land: 2.99€ Tapas with olive oil: 2.99€ – 4.50€ Grilled or fried tapas: 2.99€ – 10.75€ Traditional Stews: 2.50€ – 3.50€ Desserts: 3.50€ – 4.50€

CAFETÍN It’s symbolic that the colourful and compact Cafetín café bar was founded in 1978. This was the year that democracy was officially re-established in Spain, after several grey decades of dictatorship. This is one of the most legendary and open-minded café bars of the Barrio del Carmen. It is also said to be the first café bar that turned the area from a no-go zone in the 1970s to the highly popular and buzzing centro histórico of today. By the bar, you will find a framed, black & white photo of the bar’s beginnings with the tousle-haired customers chilling on the terrace… La Transición, as it was known, was a time of liberty and real change in Spain and Cafetín has been a hangout for bohemians, artists, locals and visitors for many years. It was an early port of call for clubbers during the wild ‘80s / ’90s época. It really is open to all nationalities & outlooks and the helpful staff speak a smattering of languages, too…including English. The interior has a chic, somewhat 1930s cabaret style-look, reflecting that particularly theatrical & progressive period in Spain’s past. Dig the violet walls and art exhibitions by local artists. There is a relaxing terraza outside with a beautiful view of the old centre, great for soaking up the sunshine with a newspaper & beer and good for people watching, too. Follow their Facebook page for events coming Article © 2015 24/ 7 Valencia

up, including occasional live music soirees and vintage clothes mercadillos. Owner Juan is the kind and warm host who runs this famous café bar day to day. He is well travelled and a talented fashion designer who has crafted this place with care and detail. It is clear that he cares for his customers. You can browse their ample menu for homemade cocktails in large glasses including mojitos, piña coladas and margaritas, all for 6€. There are some excellent wines including ‘Arnum Gran Reserva’, served at 3.50€ a glass with traditional Valencian homemade Rubio crisps. You will find red & white wines and cavas, too. Check out their excellent Agua de Valencia (vodka, champagne, natural orange juice, gin), which is Valencia’s worldfamous cocktail par excellence. We enjoyed a refreshing gin & tonic at the bar during our last visit and they have a fair range of ginebras, including Hendricks, Beefeater, Premium, Seagram’s and Valencian brand Gin Mare too. Yes, they do great sangria, too! Coffee lovers should take note that they serve the excellent local café Camillo, meaning your experience here really is as Valencian as can be. You can also savour cappuccino, Americano, café con leche and their carajillo (coffee with cognac), which is said to be their most popular! Tea lovers are

in for a treat as you will find a wide range of tés, including black, green, white and red choices, and relaxing infusions like Rooibos canela naranja and Hibisco Egipto. You won’t go hungry here, as you can enjoy generous tapas, including ham, cheese, and anchovies fresh from the Mercado Central (4€-5€) with lovely pan de pueblo bread. Cafetín has an ever-changing range of tasty and attractive desserts, including Bizcocho de chocolate, apple pie (tarta de manzana) and their favourite breakfast cake Coca de llanda, with prices from 2€2.50€. The music soundtrack is often soul & jazz and we’ve noticed time and again that the late, great Amy Winehouse is a particular favourite. At the weekends the music can be a bit more nostalgic and ’80s as the night gets going. The age range is from 20 to 60-somethings depending on the time of the day and night. Cafetín is a classic Valencian bar in the heart of the old town with a rich history and open to everyone. An essential part of the chill out scene! GLAMOUR

GLAMOUR

Como dice la famosa canción ‘this boots are made for walking’…y para ir a la moda.

VALENCIA FOOTBALL

GENUINE CONTENDERS Valencia continued their excellent start to 2015 by remaining unbeaten in the league throughout the whole of March, and consequently established themselves as genuine contenders for an automatic Champions League place for next season. La Liga teams have the same allocation as the Premier League for the most prestigious tournament in Europe, with the top three clubs securing an automatic spot, and the fourth-placed club gaining entry into the qualification phase of the competition. After the convincing demolishing of Real Sociedad at the beginning of March, Valencia had to travel to Vicente Calderón for a match up with Atlético Madrid. Arguably, the current La Liga champions are Valencia’s biggest rivals for that coveted third place, and many of the Los Chés fans felt this result could be one of the defining moments of the season. The Atlético manager, Diego Simeone, was up to his usual antics on the touchline from the minute the referee blew his whistle to start the game, whipping the home crowd into a frenzy with his passionate responses to every key decision the man in the centre made. From the off, it was noticeable that the rojiblancos had swapped their usual

‘tiki-taka’ football for a more aggressive approach to the game, a stance that is normally reserved for the likes of Barcelona and Real Madrid. In many ways this was a complement to Los Chés, but it did neutralise Valencia’s passing game to good effect as the game turned into a scrappy physical encounter. Fernando Torres was lucky not to see red as early as the 18th minute for an elbow on Otamendi and the bad-tempered game seemed to favour the home side, whose ‘in your face’ tactics ensured the game failed to find any cohesion or rhythm. Atlético broke the deadlock just after the half hour mark when Koke drove home from the edge of the box. The yellow cards continued to rack up for both sides as the game continued to threaten to boil over at any time. Valencia eventually restored parity with just over 10 minutes to go when Mustafi was on hand to head home a Parejo free kick that came back off the bar. Not surprisingly, a red card was shown before the end of the game, with Javi Fuego the one to depart, although in all honesty, it could have been any one of the majority of the outfield players to suffer this fate on another day. Along with the red card, there were nine yellows shown by the referee, but Valencia matched fire with fire, and came away with a precious point from Madrid. At the end of the season, the point may

have further significance, as this ensured Valencia have a better head-to-head against Atlético, and therefore will finish above them if both sides finish with the same amount of points. After having Sunday noon kick offs for their last two home games, Valencia were hoping the television networks would be more accommodating. It was not to be, as a late Friday night fixture was next on the cards for the Mestalla faithful. A dangerous Deportivo La Coruña side were the visitors and recent results against the Galician outfit have been less than favourable. However, Valencia have ironed out their defensive frailties from last year and always look a threat when going forward. Stubborn defending did frustrate the home side for an hour, but then the breakthrough came from the penalty spot. Negredo had taken the ball off Parejo to score the last time Los Chés had been given a penalty, but on this occasion the Valencia captain resumed the role, (despite Negredo’s presence on the field), and calmly dispatched the kick to the relief of the whole stadium. Ten minutes later, Paco Alcácer came on as a substitute for Negredo and was on the score sheet within minutes. Having his first appearance in a month after injury, the Spanish striker showed great sharpness to convert a cross from Feghouli, stabbing the ball home from inside the six-yard box.

twentyfoursevenvalencia 37 Valencia’s next game took them south for a match up with another one of the Region’s clubs, Elche. Struggling like Levante, the franjiverdes were hoping for a repeat of last season’s score when they were victorious by the odd goal in three. However, it was not to be, as Valencia put in a clinical and professional performance to run out impressive 4-0 winners. André Gomes opened the scoring on the stroke of half-time and then set up Alcácer for Valencia’s second just before the hour mark. An unfortunate own goal by Roco put the result beyond doubt, but there was still time for Otamendi to get his name on the score sheet when he headed home from a corner in the second minute of injury time. With an international break around the corner, Los Chés will be hoping all their players return from their nations’ respective matches free from injury. April has a tough look to it with local derbies against Villarreal and Levante at Mestalla, and away matches at Camp Nou and San Mamés. Meanwhile, Levante UD continue to

have a problematic campaign. A victory at home to Eibar was the only positive result in March. Losses to Real Madrid at Bernabéu, and Real Celta at home have left Los Granotas in the bottom three at the start of April, but in reality, there are around 10 teams with real relegation concerns as the league reaches the business end of the season. CLUBLAND

24/7 VALENCIA Llorens area to check out with great live shows and very good rock and funk DJs. They have some really cool posters on the walls too; it feels like you are in the basement of a rock fan of the 80s. I will definitely be going back this month.

Rock Star Easter So that was Fallas. I´m sure the majority of you had a great time! Shame about the weather towards the end, but if you look out your window today, you will see that the sun is back in force! For those of you who are suffering from post-Fallas blues, fear not! Another reason to party is here this month, in the form of an egg. April is a month of celebration, and we all love a reason to party! So let me guide you to places I think you might like! As I tend to recommend clubs that play electro music, I thought it might be fun to focus on the rock scene this month. If you haven´t already discovered rock cafes and clubs, you are missing out on some fun nights. I have already mentioned Radio City (C/ Santa Teresa, 19) in previous articles, but I will mention it again. Why? Because it´s a great bar with really good events, music and drinks. You can go any day of the week and have a great time. You can go to the Open Mic nights on Thursdays at 22.00h and Reggae Jam sessions on Wednesdays, also at 22.00h. If you had to pick a day to go this month, I would recommend you check out Lupe Azcano and the Jazzy Beatle Band on Sunday 12. Radio City is also hosting Short Movie festivals on the 20th and 27th. I recently went to Magazine (C/ Pérez Escrich, 19) to play some pool, enjoy the funky music and take a couple of shots of absinthe, just your typical Thursday night. I was pleasantly surprised by the atmosphere; drinks and general feel of the place. It´s a cool place in the Juan Article © 2015 24/ 7 Valencia

Another interesting club to visit is Víbora (C/ Quart, 47), continuing with the rock theme, this joint only plays VINYL, which is quite an interesting little fact for you hipsters out there. This club used to be 47 Club, so if you´ve been living in Valencia for a few years, you would know it. The crowd there is very cool, so get your leather jacket out, black boots on, put one of those stick-on tattoos on your arm, and get rocking! It is very near to the Torres de Quart, so easy to find. If you want to break away from rock and maybe listen to some reggae, dub or ska (always a great option) you should go to Juanita Club (C/ Jesús, 91) near Mercado Jesús. Here you will find some great music acts and an altogether chilled out yet buzzing atmosphere. They are holding a Gravity Sound Party on Friday the 24th at 23.00h or you can go on the Thursday the 9th to check out Roots Attacks for some reggae and ska, at 23.00h. I will personally be going on Sunday the 26th to their Open Mic night at 20.00h. If you’ve ever gone out in the Barrio del Carmen, you must have walked past the coolest jazz club around. I am talking of course about Jimmy Glass (C/ Baja, 28) …even the name is cool! This place is a great option for people of all ages, because jazz is ageless. If you want to impress a date or just watch some of the best live acts around (often from the U.S.A. as well as Europe) while sipping on a whiskey, this is the place for you. On a side note, if you want some great food and take in some art, I highly recommend you visit Laboratorio (Pl. Cors de la Mare de Déu, 3) Situated right beside the Plaza de la Virgen, this restaurant/cafe has been serving great food for some years now. Another reason to go is to see the art exhibition organized by ‛Col.lectiu’, a group of young multidisciplinary artists looking to make a difference in the art world. The

date to go is Thursday April 9th. They also have weekly intercambio nights. Seeing as it´s Easter, and some of you will be celebrating the resurrection of JC, it would be quite fitting to go to Jerusalem Pop & Rock (C/ Convento Jerusalén, 55). This is quite a big venue with very high ceilings and a great stage. They regularly do live shows there and always invite old rock stars to DJ. The entrance is free for women but 8€ if you´re a man, as you do. Last, but not least is a club called Zombie Rocks (C/ Serpis, 62,) the name alone should convince you to spend a night there. It’s a vibrant young crowd with a lot of grease, tattoos and key chains and a guaranteed fun time. The music is purely rock and its variations. That’s me done for now. Remember to drink water before going to bed, unless you like hangovers…weirdo. And as Schwarzenegger famously said: “I still love Easter, baby!” Wills Matt

VALENCIA WORLD itself but felt that Barcelona and Madrid were too big and probably too expensive. So I rolled in here. It has been a learning curve, I’ll say that. How does living and working in Valencia compare to the U.S.A.?

GAVIN WATSON Tell us something about your background, travels and experiences. I’m originally from Scotland, Perth-born and bred so to speak, but left for New Zealand and played football for a North Island club which actually turned out to be a great chapter in my life. At that time rugby was the be-all and end-all for Kiwis. The town would shut down on Saturday afternoon, literally, and everyone would troop up to see their rugby team. We were right next door; playing just as seriously, except our loyal following would roll up in a flatbed truck with a sofa on it! We never did get the opportunity to suffer from delusions of grandeur, that was for sure. However, that trip kick-started something in me and I ended up on the road for the best part of 20 years. I was a photographer for 10 years and worked on cruise ships, mainly in the Caribbean, before moving on to the art business where I ended up buying and selling etchings and lithographs, mainly by the masters such as Picasso, Miró and Dalí. A lot of travelling and I finally ended up in Seattle in the U.S.A., where I hung my hat for seven years. Great times. I still go there every summer and see friends and I started a business there two years ago. I first came to Valencia in 2005. The method behind the madness was that I wanted to be in a city that was changing Article © 2015 24/ 7 Valencia

Very different. Seattle and Valencia are the same size in population, but whereas Seattle is really a cosmopolitan and dynamic city, Valencia is really laid back in comparison. In Seattle, so many people come from all over to work for companies like Microsoft and Amazon and never leave. The upside of this is the energy and opportunities that are available. However, the downside is the constant need to work just to make a living and pay the bills. It does need a lot of money to live there. A lot of queues at the coffee shop, between 7.00 and 8.00 in the morning, with folks wanting their coffee to go. Some people think it’s the land of everything and in some ways it is, but it all has to be paid for. If you have an accident or fall ill, you better have good health insurance. In contrast, Valencia is a quieter, slower place and it really doesn’t need a lot to live and get by. I don’t have a car here and I cycle everywhere. That would be impossible in the States. I kind of like the combination of living in both, which you can do with teaching. Tell us about Portland Ale House. It was strange, really. In 2008 I had just got to Valencia for the second time around and noticed, in ‘24/7 Valencia’ actually, a new bar called the Portland Ale House opening. I loved the beer from the Northwest. In fact the whole area from Portland to Vancouver is a unique part of the world and here, in Valencia, was a place where I could get beer like that and meet folks that have travelled a bit and lived a life out of the box. For about two years the place was jamming and a bunch of us had a great time. Now it has evolved, certain people have moved on, some had to move on, food has come in and it’s now a great blend of good beer, good food and good local people. Maurice (the owner) and I have become strong friends and, a few

years ago, I started running the Sunday quiz, which still plugs away. What are your plans for the future and what is your philosophy of life? Right now, probably more of the same. Maybe some more time on the other side of the pond, as it works better from a business point of view. When I first came here, I had ideas of what I could do but it is more difficult for an outsider to break in here compared to other places. However, I have some good friends here and when it’s all said and done these are the things that pull you back. You can live in the most beautiful place in the world but if you don’t have friends it’s nothing. For me, living in Valencia is like semi-retirement. You don’t come here to change the world, that’s for sure. I get my cycling in, down the coast and teach a few hours. Relatively stress free. I can see myself doing this 50/50. I fully believe travel, and not just visiting a place for a week or so, but living there for a period of time is great for the soul and shows you another way of life. I’ve done it in few places and I have seen myself change and evolve because of it. This is authentic and modern Spanish cuisine by the cathedral. You will find their terraza a peaceful refuge, replete with plants.
