And what motivated you to set things up? Café del Duende opened its doors in January 1998, so lovers of flamenco in this city would have a place where they could go, and those who had never experienced flamenco would have the opportunity to do so. Were you just a group of friends interested in music? You might say that flamenco has always been present in our lives. At a time when some people turned their back on the music, others were learning to love it. Why on Calle Turia? That’s where we found the most suitable premises. What does flamenco mean to you? What is the position of flamenco within the world of Spanish music? As well as being part of our own personal story, flamenco is one of the most vital types of music by way of its originality, its quality and wealth of expression. Maybe what you call “the world of Spanish

music” doesn’t have too much influence on it. Flamenco has a life of its own and is moving forward all the time. Valencia is not known as a flamenco city, you, however, have managed to succeed here. Is there a market for flamenco music in this city? We can no longer limit a type of music to the place where it was born. Flamenco started in Andalusia but it has become universal. Many people would be surprised how far flamenco has spread and how much it is appreciated in far-flung places all over the world, perhaps more appreciated sometimes than in places closer to home. The number of flamenco aficionados in Valencia is growing, but “markets” are difficult things. Flamenco music is evolving, there are fusions with jazz and other types of music, for example. Do you prefer classic flamenco or do you support these new branches of the music? Without evolution, flamenco as we know it would not exist. The classical style is the base, the root, but evolution is involved with the creative process and that must always be free. Despite the existence of a strict musical structure, flamenco allows for many variations and easily incorporates aspects from other types of music and other instruments. Time will tell which types of fusion work well and, over time, those that don’t are rejected.

What do the public prefer? Our public is also very varied and we realise that some prefer the classical while others opt for more innovation. We offer as much of one as the other so we keep everyone satisfied. Could you name some of the groups who have played at your venue? Have there been any concerts that were particularly special? It wouldn’t be fair of us to single out one artist here. In general, the artists that play at Café del Duende are very good. There have been many special performances, but you only know they are special when you are there experiencing them. When you feel the ‘duende’ is especially in evidence for whatever reason that night, you know it, you feel it but you can’t explain why. Do you get on well with the groups and musicians who come and play? Of course. Café del Duende is their home and, in some cases, you might say it’s their ‘birthplace’, as more than a few of the artists started their careers here.

In flamenco it’s typical to shout your approval at the musicians. You let your emotions out inspired by what is happening on stage and you feel part of what’s happening in the performance. With the recession, rising taxes, etc., is it difficult to keep the vision and the project on track? If this had been a purely business thing, a way of making money out of flamenco, we would have given up years ago. It’s true that it is getting more and more difficult, but we are privileged to be able to offer great flamenco to all those who want to experience it and to receive the gratitude of so many people who have been moved by the performances. That’s what motivates us. What are your plans for the future?

What kind of atmosphere will we find at your venue? What sort of night can we expect?

To continue being an outlet for flamenco in the same way as we have been doing up to now, allowing more and more people to experience and get to know and love this deep and beautiful art form, and to continue to experience more magical nights at Café del Duende.

Though I was born in England, I almost seemed to inhale foreign tongues as a child and could express myself quite ably in six languages by the time I was 16. I now speak eight. My father, who was from Jamaica, spent part of his youth in Cuba, my mother came from Germany, and several of my schoolmates were Italian. The area of Luton where I grew up was populated by families from all over the Commonwealth and colonies. My mother was a German migrant to Britain after WWII, and I was born before my father’s Caribbean homeland declared her independence from the United Kingdom. My motivation for learning languages probably sprang from a visceral need to reconcile the apparent contradictions Article © 2014 24/ 7 Valencia

in my world. Performing arts became a form of refuge for me. As a teenager, I joined Luton Youth Drama Workshop and, following audition, I became a fullproduction cast member of the National Youth Theatre of Great Britain, enjoying minor roles in three London productions while still at school. I took up the guitar during my first year at the Polytechnic of Central London (now called the University of Westminster), where I studied Modern Languages. Although I’ve had some great teachers, my languages are actually self – taught and I picked up music in rather the same way. After 10 years’ experience as a TEFL teacher abroad, I went to the University of Sussex, where I applied myself fully to postgraduate studies in Education. As an idealistic teacher in Brighton in the early 1990s, I fully embraced my responsibilities as head of languages at a secondary school in a significantly deprived area. I’m proud of having pursued the role with

In my free time, I’ve sung and played in six European countries, performed aboard the Majesty of the Seas for Royal Caribbean, gained professional experience touring in musical theatre and opened for Elvin Jones Jazz Machine at London’s Ronnie Scott’s club (where I lead a packed house in a round of “Happy Birthday” on the night of Elvin’s 70th). In 2002, I recorded a live album called ‘Mike McKoy Swings to the Bossa Nova’ (not my choice of title) with Bobby Wellins, Anthony Kerr, Pete Letanka, Simon Woolf, and Simon Morton – some of the leading players in the UK. The music was – and remains – beautiful, but the experience didn’t become satisfying for me until I learned to stop looking beyond myself for solutions to my own visceral needs. Once I started focusing on articulating my own experience, “rhythm claimed me”. How do you find Valencia as place to live as a musician, teacher and family man? Having spent extended periods of time living and working in the UK, France, Mexico, Germany and other parts of Spain, having been around the block, and having found the courage to curb any neurotic affiliations, I can safely say that nothing I know beats living in Valencia. I think myself lucky to live amidst such elegance.

However, beneath my philosophical exterior there is a pragmatist concerned about providing for my family. On a purely prosaic level, I simply can’t afford to funnel my energies into full – time music. Instead, I do what I have to do so I can do what I want to do. I’ve been in Valencia for nearly seven years now, and I’ve had to struggle a bit at times, but I’m learning to balance those roles in ways that are healthy, sustainable and fun. I love my teaching job at the Learning Bus because we support students’ individual progress through transparent and accountable means, without encroaching on their rights, and without implicitly teaching authoritarianism – values I uphold as a parent. But as a musician, I’m in constant awe at the formidable skills and high level of music education here. A lot of the music in Valencia is way beyond the limitations of my capabilities and my experience, but I’d hasten to add that this is partly by choice. Being self – taught, you develop

an aesthetic where others often don’t. I once tried to explain this to an interviewer at Time Out with the old joke about a gentleman being “someone who can play the bagpipes but doesn’t”. I don’t sing and play because I need an audience, but I do need an audience in order to sing and play. In Valencia, there are some great places to play, and musicians to play with. Come and check out the quintet at Jimmy Glass on Friday 23rd May! Could you tell us in detail about your latest album? Perhaps the best place to start is with the title, which would have made my mother laugh while – I hope –honouring my father. Although I’ve used my own dual heritage as a point of departure, ‘Ludwig Manhattan’s Germaican Blues’ is not at all autobiographical. It’s entirely symbolic. Just as Woody Allen’s Zelig “just wanted to be liked”, I’ve found it expedient to behave like a ‘cultural chameleon’ at times

in my life. Although the ability to blend in and adapt to one’s surroundings is widely considered to be a positive trait, it frequently conceals the sad state of affairs where people would not otherwise enjoy the basic freedom to be themselves. I’ve tried to preserve the architecture of the music – the style and form – and tried to express my ideas with the natural prosody of my own voice. It’s a spontaneous interaction in a special language that infers the possibility of peace and love, of renewal and growth, of mutual understanding. Samosas By Helen Westwater La Ola Fresca Oh, ‘The Darling Buds of May’ are here and with sun in full bloom, let’s not stay at home worrying about intricate pastries. Today we get straight to the crunch with cheating filo pastry, readily available in local supermarkets, and make samosas for a spicy treat to take to the hills or the beach. For these tasty little parcels were made for travel. Much like the Cornish pasty or empanada, baked in their protective crust, they were packed in saddle bags to cross deserts, mountainous ridges and equally appropriate today for wherever you choose to have your picnic. Last month with the help of UK Erasmus visitor, Ginita Patel, we had a cooking workshop making them in La Ola Fresca, so here we share with you samosas. Preparation

Samosas Ingredients • 1 packet filo pastry (use two at a time) • 1 onion, diced • 3-4 white potatoes • 4-5 carrots (Dice potatoes and carrots into 1-1.5cm cubes. You need equal quantities of each) • White cabbage, finely sliced • Peas (fresh or frozen, frozen are easier) • 1 tablespoon ginger, pureed • 1 tablespoon fresh green chilli, ground • 1 tablespoon garlic, pressed • 1 teaspoon (approx) black mustard seeds • 1 teaspoon (approx) cumin seeds • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric • Bunch fresh coriander, chopped • Juice of 1 lime • Salt and pepper to taste • 1 teaspoon garam masala (or mix of clove powder and cinnamon) • Flour and water for a paste for sealing the edges • Corn oil for frying

Heat 3/4 tablespoon oil in a large pan. When hot, add mustard seeds and cumin seeds and let fry a little. Add the onion and fry gently. Add potatoes, carrots, ginger, garlic and cook lightly. Leave aside to cool.

Pastry: Take 2 sheets of filo pastry. Cut 3 rectangular strips. Place a dampened tea – towel over all the pastry you are not using. Make up the paste with flour and a little water and keep covered with a dampened cloth. From the middle point of the widest side of the rectangular strip, make a fold over to the right. Then bring the other side over to the left. Wet all the edges with your flour mix. You should have a little triangle that you can hold in your hand while you fill it with the mixture. Then fold the edges and seal with the flour paste.

Heat the oil in a frying pan or a deep – fat fryer. The ideal temperature is between 160C – 180C / 320F – 360F. Make a test with a little bit of filo pastry – when it floats straight away to the top, you are ready to get frying. If it is too hot, your samosas will have little bubbles in the pastry or become over brown. When the oil is heated, fry your samosas. They will be ready when they float to the top and are crisply lightly browned.

RESTAURANT OF THE MONTH

EL MÉXICO DE MARÍA It is the fourth of May as I write this article, just one day before Cinco de Mayo, a holiday in Mexico which celebrates ‘El Día de la Batalla de Puebla’, the day the Mexicans fought and won a significant victory against the French in 1862. It was a significant battle and worth commemorating for two reasons – the Mexicans were heavily outnumbered by the French, who had not been defeated in almost 50 years and secondly, no country in the Americas has been invaded by any other European military force since then. It is very fitting, therefore, that this month’s restaurant is the charming El México de María in Ruzafa. We went on Friday night, arriving in a street full to bursting with crowds attending an opening at the gallery across the road, but we pushed our way through the throngs to elMdeM. There were four of us this night and we were very warmly greeted by María, who suggested that we sit closer to the kitchen in back, though the restaurant was empty at this point. “It’ll get very busy very soon and I want you to have the best experience of my place.” It has the look of just how you imagine a cantina in a small Mexican town would look, with bright-coloured walls, little shrines, bright cloths, colourful pictures, garlands and trinkets. María smiles constantly and has an easy way with her, she’s instantly likeable. “I’m a gallega,” she told us, “but have always loved the cooking of Mexico. I lived in London for a while and whilst I was there, I visited Mexico to learn more. When I came back to Spain 10 years ago, I settled here and opened El México de María.” She went on to tell us that the food we were about to eat was Mexican – very definitely not Tex-Mex, and the cook was Mexican so the food is authentic.

“I want to choose your food for you, I want to give you a real degustación, and you’ll start with tortilla chips and our home-made guacamole, everything you eat tonight will be casera!” she says with a flourish (casera means home-made, if you hadn’t guessed). She recommended a “great little Ribera”, an Alidis Crianza (16.77€ ), and water.

was, heaving with people who obviously know the place, and María well. María was passing from table to table, smiling and chatting, and everyone was tucking in heartily to their food. We discussed how odd that the Spanish, in general, don’t like spicy foods and how some of the things we’d eaten this night were three chilli alarm hot!

The guacamole came with chips and three little dishes, one of smoked mole, another of a very spicy mushroom dip new to us, and the third of chopped jalapeño peppers (6.90€). Pastel Azteca was next – layered with tortilla, cheese, chicken, pepper and chilli, served bubbling hot in an earthenware dish. María’s very sweet assistant told us to chop and mix it all up before serving – delicious (8.74€). Enchilada Suiza was next – tortilla, cheese, tomatillo salsa verde and cream, a cheesy and tasty dish (10.23€).

We were expecting a dessert, but María bought a steaming banana leaf parcel to the table.

Then came Quesadillas de huitlacoche made with corn truffles – it is technically a fungus or mushroom that grows on kernels of black corn. They were earthy, as you would expect of a mushroom, and extremely tasty as we all agreed (9.61€). Just when we thought we’d had everything Maria came to the table again, this time with Tacos de carnitas. These were the nearest to anything we make at home, spicy pork in small pieces served with tacos, chopped onion and carrot, cilantro (coriander) and a chilli sauce. Assemble yourself and enjoy! They were so good! (12.45€). Then, Maria came to the table with another course! It was Mole poblano con pollo y arroz de pueblo – a chicken thigh roasted and covered with a mole and chocolate chilli sauce with dried fruits, served with a vegetable rice. She shredded the chicken with two forks and it was every bit as good as we’d come to expect (10.90€). We chatted and noticed how packed the place

A unique, moist and impressive end to a great meal. “We have run out of the chocolate pudding, so I can only offer you the cheesecake!” María was back – with more food! It was a perfect cheesecake and served with glass cups of hot black coffee flavoured with orange and cinnamon. Go, I urge you, to this fun and quirky restaurant (even the prices are quirky). FUNNY OLD GAME There is a world-famous event that occurs in Spain at least twice a year and which raises opposing passions among people from all walks of life. It occupies great swathes of airtime and newsprint the week before and after it occurs. And it is most certainly not just about football. It is a match between Barcelona FC and Real Madrid. When both Barça and Real Madrid lost to German teams not long ago, a joke went viral that reveals a little of the politics behind the apparently innocuous football rivalries in Spain: “When Aznar was president of Spain, Real Madrid used to win in Europe. When Zapatero was president, Barça used to win. Now Rajoy is president, the Germans win.” As anyone who has seen a Barça – Real Madrid match in Camp Nou or on TV will know, the Catalan flag and references to independence are very much visible among the supporters. Likewise, extreme

right – wing symbols have been seen among Madrid teams’ fans. It is no surprise to the Spanish that Aznar should be a Real Madrid fan while the socialist Zapatero, who hails from the Spanish right – wing stronghold of Valladolid in Castilla y León, should be a Barça fan, or culé. The name culé, referring to Barça fans, originated in Barça’s old stadium, where the backsides (culs) of the Barça fans could be seen by passers – by outside. Going to see a Barça match during Franco’s regime meant more than going to a football match. It meant an excuse for gathering with thousands of like – minded Catalans (something which was illegal under any other circumstances) and being able to vent one’s frustrations against Madrid – and hence the centre of Spanish government. Deals such as the great Di Stéfano’s signing for Real Madrid after failure behind the scenes to join Barça fuelled suspicions from many other spheres. Johann Cruyff, on the other hand, became a Catalan idol, naming his son Jordi at a time when the Franco regime banned Spanish citizens

from giving Catalan names. Jordi went on to play for Barça and Catalonia. Of course, it may be better for society to vent its animosities on the playing field than elsewhere, and while football is undoubtedly given far more significance than many other infinitely more important matters, it can still be a reflection of feelings in other areas of society. The presidents of the clubs themselves are usually very representative of their fan base, having been voted by them. Real Madrid’s current president is Florentino Pérez, officially the 10th richest person in Spain. He was a member of the recently deceased Adolfo Suárez’s UCD (Suárez was head of Spanish TV under Franco and pivotal president of Spain during and after the Transition). Barça’s ex-president Joan Laporta helped found Solidaritat Catalana per la Independència, a party for Catalan independence. His successor, Rosell, recently resigned amid investigations by the tax authorities into Barça’s most recent star signing, Neymar. But then, dodgy, ‘colourful’ football club presidents are nothing new in Spain.

Perhaps the most famous was Atlético Madrid’s late leader and Franco fan, Jesús Gil. His admiration for the dictator possibly began when he was pardoned by the regime for the manslaughter of 56 people when his hastily built restaurant collapsed. This one – man building boom later became mayor of Marbella and covered it with concrete before finally being found guilty of embezzling public money. The town’s name was emblazoned on the team’s shirts for years, paid for by its council to the tune of €450 million – which ended up being the case for which Gil had to step down us mayor. He took control of the club in 1987, but it wasn’t until after his death in 2004 that the Supreme Court took its supreme time to declare that he had appropriated the club illegally and swindled it through false contracts. His lawyer in the Marbella town council, who earned €6.7 million from the town’s coffers from 1999 to 2003, was none other than José María del Nido, until very recently the president of Sevilla football club. His time at the club saw great new signings and sporting triumphs, yet his dealings with Marbella have caught up with him – he is now in prison. Once again, Valencia is not to be outdone. Recently, an ex-president of Valencia Football Club (the one responsible for the

gigantic, unfinished stadium languishing to the north of the city) was arrested for attempting to kidnap another ex-president of the same club, who lives almost next door to him.

Such characters should come as no surprise when we look at the figures. At the start of the current football season, it was claimed that Spanish clubs owe €3.6 billion to the Inland Revenue, the top culprits being Real Madrid and Barça, followed by the likes of Atlético Madrid and Valencia CF (at the end of last season, four Valencian clubs were apparently in the top 20, one of them in the second division). And everything seems to indicate that this black hole is only getting bigger.

Serious shortcomings and irregularities in the Spanish football federation’s economic control are still going through the courts. Football is a world that makes its own rules. If a team loses a match – and consequently earnings for European games, further TV rights etc. – due to bad refereeing decisions, they clearly can’t take the case to court, even though the TV evidence may be there for all to see. If they did so, they would be fined or even banned by football’s powers-thatbe (La Liga, UEFA, FIFA etc.). Any other organisation operating outside the courts and moving such astronomical amounts of money is usually referred to as a mafia.

OFF TO THE EMIRATES BUT NOT IN EUROPE The nearest Valencia fans will get to European football next year will be an appearance in the seventh edition of the Emirates Cup. The hosts Arsenal, Benfica and AS Monaco will provide pre – season opposition as the club now face the prospect of non – participation in a FIFA European competition for the first time this century. The month of April offered the supporters the roller coaster of emotions they have been accustomed to this campaign. With the chance of a Europa League place slipping away with each La Liga match, the team’s best hope of qualification was to win this year’s competition. Basel of Switzerland were the quarter – final opposition and a sub – par performance by Los Chés in an empty stadium because of crowd trouble in the previous round sent Valencia back to Mestalla with everything to do. The return leg gave the fans a reminder of the glory days and just how electric the ground can be when the players put in a performance the fans deserve. Two goals from Paco Alcácer sandwiched with an Eduardo Vargas header ensured extra time as Valencia cancelled out the three – goal deficit from St. Jakob Park.

With every home fan in the stadium in full voice, the tide turned Valencia’s way in extra time and Los Chés finally went through 5-3 on aggregate as Alcácer completed his hat trick and Juan Bernat completed the goal tally. Hundreds of fans stayed outside the ground chanting for the players in scenes that have not been seen at Mestalla since the Copa del Rey semi – final victory in 2008 against Barcelona. In between the two games with Basel was the small matter of a league clash with Real Vallodolid in the Estadio Nuevo José Zorrilla. A drab 0-0 draw was the outcome, a result that did not really suit either side. The next league match saw the club from the south of the Valencia Region, Elche, visit Mestalla. The ground was swelled by a good number of the visiting fans but they headed back down the AP-7 pointless as the home side eked out a 2-1 victory. The little Argentinean Pablo Piatti opened the scoring for Valencia before Coro equalised for Fran Escribá’s side. A stunning strike from Dani Parejo halfway through the second half secured the points. A trip to Pamplona followed, with Valencia picking up a point thanks to a late Jonas equaliser, but by now most of the fans had turned their attention back to the Europa League and a two – legged semi – final clash with La Liga rivals Sevilla.

The Ramón Sánchez Pijuán is often used by the Spanish national side for its more competitive matches and it is renowned for providing a hostile atmosphere for the opposition. The home fans were playing their part and Valencia were on the back foot from the start of the game as the Andalusians showed off some of the slick football that has seen them soar up the table after a dreadful start to the season. Valencia defended stoically but Sevilla breached the visitors’ wall twice through Mbia and Bacca to claim a 2-0 lead at the halfway stage of the tie. However, there was no respite for the club, as Valencia’s next league challenge was to host leaders Atlético Madrid. Diego Simeone has transformed the rojiblancos into a major force on the European stage and an evenly balanced game was edged by the visitors, when Raúl García capitalised on Guaita’s misjudgement to give the club from the capital all three points. The return leg in the Europa League was another classic with Sevilla and once again the Valencia fans did not disappoint. A rocking Mestalla witnessed elation and heartbreak as the players gave their all and more. Within 25 minutes Valencia were back on an even keel with Sofiane Feghouli and a Beto own goal (from a fantastic Jonas header) restoring parity.

When Jérémy Mathieu, arguably Valencia’s player of the season, inched the hosts ahead with 70 minutes on the clock, Mestalla went crazy and fans were already booking tickets to Turin in their heads. But football can be a cruel game and, with Valencia blatantly time – wasting and feigning injuries, the home side started defending deeper and deeper in their own half. In the fourth minute of additional time the unthinkable happened, as Cameroonian Stéphane Mbia, on loan from Queens Park Rangers of all clubs, headed home for the visitors to shatter the dreams of all the locals. A 3-1 result gave Sevilla the trip to Italy on away goals to contest a final with Benfica, who, ironically, Valencia will now play against in the Emirates Cup at the beginning of August. Out of the Europa League and with very little chance of catching Villarreal for the coveted seventh place that guarantees European football next year ,a league victory at Bernabéu to complement the three points gained at Nou Camp earlier

in the year would have been a nice way to finish off the season.

This looked to have been on the cards when Valencia went ahead just before half – time through a Mathieu header from a Dani Parejo corner. Sergio Ramos scored the equaliser before Parejo gave Los Chés the lead for the second time. An injury – time leveller from Ronaldo ensured Madrid got a share of the spoils. Earlier that day, Levante had cut league leaders Atlético Madrid down to size with a 2-0 home victory to record their best league victory to date this season. Other results throughout April included defeats to Villarreal and Bilbao and draws at home to Getafe and away at Elche. I certainly can, finally the weather has taken a definite turn towards the last few steps of my favourite seasons of the year....SPRING / SUMMER BABY, YEAH! I don’t know about you, but this past autumn and winter felt like the longest, coldest and most depressing months for quite a few years. Most probably it’s because of the economic situation that the press, government and pessimists all around the globe keep going on about. This year, above any, I think they have really outdone themselves and truly succeeded in their main goal in controlling the general public by using fear and uncertainty of the future. Well done, guys! Not many people went travelling this year and more people kept their money in your banks so you can get richer using it, BRAVO! There is one thing they can’t control though and it’s the same thing that they dread and I look forward to every year....have you guessed it yet??? SPRING / SUMMER BABY, YEAH!!! It’s the time of the year that people begin to smile more, they start buying loads of fresh, bright and colourful clothes and drink endless amounts of ice cold beer, glass after glass of chilled vino blanco and not forgetting the amber nectar of all drinks... MOJITOS:)))))))))) There is something about a mojito, for me it´s about what it represents. When you order a mojito, there are many processes leading up to that glorious first sip. First, it’s the decision to have one. Normally you are sat on a sunny terrace somewhere perhaps by the beach looking at the deep blue ocean and the clear blue skies. Everyone around you is having fun

Then, all of a sudden, a fourth option pops into the equation, why not order a mojito?? Why not order something that your eyes have just experienced moments before, something that represents, smiles, sea, sand and, most of all, satisfactory. This chain of thought is then swiftly followed by your lips producing a list of words strung together which all sound the same sentence, “Haces mojitos?” At this point, honestly, you don’t know what answer you would prefer to hear. On the one hand, you hope they say, “Sorry, sir, we have just run out of limes”, and you will have to go back to your original thought of a nice, cold beer in the sun. But on the other hand, you know if the waiter says yes….well…..things could via off to another. Mmmmmmmm…Mojitos…a friend;)

On 7 June at the new terrace at the Laydown Club (Marina Real Juan Carlos I), Dom Scott and Friends will be re-opening their Saturday afternoon (16.00h – 22.00h) deep house sunset sessions for music lovers of all ages to attend and enjoy whilst in the company of the city’s finest talent. As many of you might remember, they were a huge hit last year in the Mist Club in the port and Ánimas del Puerto before that, too. Their mix of old classics and brand new across-the-waters tunes were a massive hit not only for Valencia natives but anyone who was fortunate enough to be in the region at that time. This year they have promised to be bigger and better with world class guest DJs who have come forward themselves asking to be part of the scene after the big man Dom Scott’s personal achievements in the music industry producing with the big boys this year. If you haven’t made plans for this date, I strongly recommend you put it in your diary as it will be a benchmark for things to come this summer. Other clubs like the alternative Jerusalem Club

(C/ Convento Jerusalén, 55), the commercial Mya (Avenida del Saler, 5), indie & electronica at La3 (C/ Padre Porta, 2) indie & pop at Play (C/ Cuba, 8),- and the pumping house music for a young crowd at SUPERCLUB 95 (C/ San Vicente, 95) are all promising to have a summer line-up to put all other summers to shame. Please watch this space next month to get full summer calendars as/when the DJs are confirmado.The festival season is nearly upon us as well, so I promise to inform you on all of the top festivals around Spain to hit up in next month’s edition of 24/7 Valencia, as soon as all of the big acts have been confirmed. Regarding two of the recommended clubs, Jerusalem is more of an underground type place smack bang in the middle of town, near the train station. The new owner, Jesús, used to have various clubs 10 years ago that had a huge hipster following and great alternative crew every weekend. Obviously, these types of people have technically grown up since then. Fortunately for him, these clubbers still have a Peter Pan syndrome and are still mad for going out on a Friday and Saturday night to listen to fantastic DJs play underground music and non-radio retro tunes. Mya is mainstream commercial house, maximum FM – style type of music but situated in a superb location (City of Arts & Sciences) with normally an upmarket, fashionable clientele. In recent months, I’ve maybe leaned towards a negative vibe regarding finding that special person in your life, and fully enjoying the precious time we are all here on this big blue snooker ball we call the earth. Perhaps I got dragged down by those love haters, too, but today is a new day, my people!! This month of May is always a positive month where anything is on the cards….. the possibility of finding that true love IS out there, it’s just waiting for those stars to align in the right order. Or should I say just the right amount of sun, tunes and combination of shots racked up on the bar;) Seize the moment, my old pedigree chums, because it’s out there just waiting for you to grab it!!! One thing I will tell you, though, you will have to make a plan stand and get off your arses / asses and at least make it to a place with good music, ‘cause that’s where all the magic happens, baby, yeah!!!!

A Family Affair Those of you who have seen ‘The Godfather’ will no doubt remember the wedding scene where the power mongers of politics, the economy, the judiciary and the Mafia rub shoulders like the good friends and business partners they are. Several years ago, the Spanish were treated to such a real – life setting with the wedding of Prime Minister Aznar’s daughter. Alfonso Guerra, once the socialist Deputy Prime Minister of Spain, sarcastically advised the public prosecutor leading what has become known as Gürtel, the biggest, most famous corruption investigation in the history of Spanish democracy, to simply look at the guest list to save time. Indeed, 18 of those accused in the web were invited, including the two suspected ringleaders, Correa (Belt or Gürtel in German) and Álvaro Pérez, accused of orchestrating a web of overpriced public contracts in exchange for PP party donations etc. Other guests included Miguel Blesa, once president of the Caja Madrid bank, who has already spent time in jail over irregularities in very suspicious movements of large amounts of money before the 300-yearold bank disappeared in the financial black hole that formed under his reckless presidency, along with the savings of many pensioners he is accused of swindling with dodgy investment schemes (even blind and mentally impaired people signed their life savings away). Rodrigo Rato, Aznar’s Economy Minister and once head of the IMF, was also there. He is charged, along with Blesa, for apparent irregularities also when managing Caja Madrid, before it was swallowed by the big, bad Bankia. Ana Mato, now Health Minister, was

there, too. She is famous for such extravagancies as claiming to the Inland Revenue to have spent thousands of euros on confetti for her daughter’s birthday party and for having no idea where the Jaguar parked in her garage came from. She came to the wedding with her then – husband, a PP senator and mayor who, when prosecuted for theft, got a sudden raise from the PP and 229,000€ for leaving the party when it was clear he had no way of escaping justice. Of course the party treasurer for two decades, Luis Bárcenas, was also there. He is now metaphorically in the eye of the hurricane and literally in prison after his famous hand – written accounts were leaked to the press: the alleged list of the PP’s illegal benefactors and beneficiaries, who have received public contracts with astronomical profit margins, always in regions governed by the PP. The case has led to a staggering stream of constant contradictions and blatant destruction of evidence. An exasperated lawyer for the public prosecution has said, “There are three types of PP members: clear liars, destroyers and those with a selective memory.” And of course, Spain’s current prime minister, Rajoy, was there. Two other heads of state, Tony Blair and Silvio Berlusconi, also appeared. At that time, Spanish law stated that no foreign group could hold over 25% of a TV station, yet it was discovered that Berlusconi had 80% of the Spanish channel Tele 5. Aznar’s government increased the percentage, making it legal, and intervened to halt the prosecution just two days after the wedding. Meanwhile, the newlyweds were now sunning themselves on Berlusconi’s yacht. How is it possible for such people to continue holding public posts? The answer lies in the other, less- publicised

public posts – in the judicial system. When democracy came to Spain, many of those same judges who passed death sentences and sent people to prison for their political affiliations simply continued in their posts. Never before in the short life of Spain’s democracy has one political party held such sway over public institutions as today, seemingly using them for its members’ own private ends with astounding impunity. As an example to begin with, the president of Spain’s Constitutional Court hid the fact he was a member of the Popular Party already in power when he took up the post, a fact which goes against the very constitution he is supposed to defend and one of its articles, not to mention the most basic notions of separation of powers. Nobody in said court suggested he should resign – and he hasn’t. The Public Defender, responsible for dealing with citizens’ complaints about governmental abuses, is also a member of the PP, as is the head of the National Securities Commission (in charge of financial regulations). She is also an ex-minister of the same party. As I write, the radio is explaining that the sister of the National [tax] Fraud Investigation Office’s head has just been promoted, along with over a dozen other people, to fill the posts of the recent resignations of high – ranking officials after an inspector was sacked for attempting to fine a multinational for tax evasion amid accusations of government protection for big tax evaders. I could go on and on. The level of political meddling in supposedly objective judicial processes is there for all to see in the biggest cases of recent times, such as the investigations into the sinking of the Prestige that caused Spain’s biggest environmental disaster or the Yak-42 accident (killing 75 people) investigation

and botched/hurried body identification. Not to mention the PP government’s insistence via diplomacy and the public media that Spain’s worst terrorist attack, on Atocha Station, was perpetrated by ETA when all the evidence made it clear the culprits were Islamic extremists (following Spain’s involvement in the war in Iraq). More recently, the heads investigating the Noos case spattering PP politicians and the royal family have been sacked by the Interior Ministry, along with the three police chiefs investigating Gürtel and the Bárcenas case (also involving PP government members). The result of this is that judges and lawyers appear to radically and suspiciously change their opinions when the accused of defendants are discovered to have political affiliations. The Valencia Region once again provides perhaps the most notorious examples, as shown by the recently sentenced ex-president of the Castellón region for the PP. The case for which he was finally given a relatively light sentence (he may not go to prison for massive tax fraud, though the anticorruption body had demanded a 13year sentence) had taken a decade and got through nine judges and four public prosecutors who ‘voluntarily’ decided to leave, with no explanation given or sought. After sentencing, he still remained as president of the Castellón Chamber of Commerce and has not been criticised by the local business community. I wonder why. But even more worrying than judicial protection for delinquents is the judicial persecution of decent citizens reminiscent of dictatorships. There is the case of José Bono, a socialist ex-minister and once speaker of the Spanish Parliament, who was saved by police officers from an aggression by individuals at a demonstration he attended for terrorist victims. After unanimous condemnation of the aggressors, including from the PP, it was discovered that the attackers were in fact members of the PP with local government posts. Suddenly, the goodies were the baddies, the victims the aggressors. The police officers who had defended Bono were put on trial. The local police commissioner

was sentenced to 5½ years in prison for “illegal arrest” of the stick – wielding PP members, and other officers were also condemned. The judge threw out the video evidence. Rajoy himself demanded a parliamentary investigation. In the end, the police officers were acquitted by the Supreme Court, some of them taking early retirement and sick leave for depression. No apologies were ever made. Perhaps the most internationally famous case was that of the judicial hounding of Judge Garzón for listening in on the conversations of the accused with their lawyers (rightly suspecting the lawyers were acting as go – between for their clients’ Swiss bank accounts). The presiding judge was found to have written the accusation’s text to comply perfectly with the court order, with the same spelling and punctuation mistakes, but this didn’t stop the prosecution from going ahead. A similar situation is now being seen with the revelation of Miguel Blesa’s corporate e-mails, the investigating judge now being threatened with a possible jail sentence and suspension for 30 years. Said judge recently remarked: “The big news in Spain is not that there are corrupt people, but their impunity,” and “Spain is no country for judges”. Left – leaning media moguls have also been through farcical trials trumpeted in the right – wing (or public) media, with Judge Gómez de Liaño finally being kicked out of the judiciary for prevarication. Aznar pardoned him as prime minister. He is now Bárcenas’ lawyer. It is clear, then, that sending corrupt politicians to prison in Spain is a very difficult and somewhat risky task, with only the most valiant, independent judges and police officers up to the job. Furthermore, the general, rising feeling among Spanish citizenry that they are unprotected from criminal activity is now being felt at a more grassroots, everyday level. And the implications for those who attempt to condemn it are perhaps even more sinister. The government is now planning to make it illegal for anybody to film a police officer with a mobile phone, imposing huge fines. The announcement came days after a man was killed by police

in Barcelona and a mobile phone video contradicted the police report, showing punches being thrown by the officers. Amid an apparent rise in police heavy – handedness, including apparently indiscriminate use of rubber bullets causing serious injuries, the government has now decided to buy a water cannon. The latest changes in Spain’s education curricula, condemned by parents, students, teachers and opposition politicians alike, include teaching children to obey the law, with no mention of the purpose of civil demonstration or disobedience, which are being increasingly demonised in the public media. To a certain extent, an outsider such as myself must learn to accept some nepotism in such a family – based, Mediterranean culture. Indeed, after 10 years waiting for an operation, I recently put my contacts to work and got a call the next day from the hospital to give me a date. As I have said before, I have certainly learnt that without family or friends one cannot go very far in Spain. The business fabric, mostly SMEs, also relies heavily on its personal contacts, thus explaining the ease with which backhanders are given and generally accepted. But this facet of the culture is clearly at odds with the universal, democratic idea of separation of powers. Justice cannot be a family affair. El Gazza
