CREDITS & REFUNDS PROGRAMS

Full credits or refunds will be processed by contacting Reception a minimum of 7 DAYS for Pro-D Day, Winter Break, Spring Break and Summer Camps and 3 DAYS for all other courses prior to program start date (less supply costs). Full credits or refunds are issued when West Shore Parks & Recreation cancels a program or when a program is not convenient due to course changes. Every effort is made to cancel in a timely manner (3 to 5 days prior to course start date). Year Long Preschool and Out of School Care: Please refer to Parent Handbooks for program specific cancellation policies.

PASSES

Passes are non-transferable and a $5 replacement card fee applies if lost or stolen. Credits and refunds are not available for promotional or Regional Passes. A one-time extension is granted for leaves exceeding 30 days. Leaves less than 30 days may be granted for medical reasons (with doctor’s note). Extensions apply only to 6 Month, Annual Family and Annual Passes for WSPR and do not apply to the Regional Annual Pass.

Credits are valid for one (1) year from the date of issue. For refunds, payments made by Visa, MasterCard, American Express or Debit will be credited to your credit/ debit card (some restrictions apply). All other refunds are refunded by cheque and processed within 10 working days. Prorated refunds may be granted at the discretion of the Program Coordinator for medical reasons (with doctor’s note), relocation outside of Victoria, course withdrawals requested after the first lesson and from date of request for Passes. A $25 fee may apply to NSF cheques, and credit card or electronic fund transfer rejections.

Improve Your Short Game, Improve Your Score. Located in the lower park at West Shore Parks & Recreation. The JDF Par 3 golf course consists of nine beautifully manicured holes, with yardage ranging from 79 to 170 and seven water hazards, this course is ideal for both the beginner and the experienced player. This course will only take a short commitment of time and is conveniently located only 20 minutes from downtown. Play on a first come first served basis – tee times not required.

Participants will be taught basic skating skills including: balancing on two feet, touching toes, walking forwards, marching and falling down. This class is for children who can skate independently. Skills include: gliding, two foot jumps, making snow and walking backwards. Children learn v-pushes, one foot gliding, two foot jump while gliding, walking backwards with some glide, two foot quarter-turns and stopping. Children learn two-foot glides on a curve, walking cross cuts, backward sculling and backwards stopping.

This drop-in program allows players with or without disabilities to participate in fun, skills-based sledge hockey session. No experience is required, and all necessary equipment is provided. Skills children will learn include: one foot glides on a curve, forwards walking cross cuts, backwards skating and sculling, two foot backwards glide to one foot, and snow plow stop. South Island Ravens Hockey

This is a team-focused program designed for male and female children that have developmental disabilities. No experience is necessary and all skill levels are welcome. Parent or support worker participation required (please note all support workers must have a current Criminal Record Check). Full hockey equipment is required. An intro to advanced skating, continuing to focus and enhance acquired skills. This class allows participants the opportunity to request specific skills they would like to focus on with unstructured practice time with instructor supervision.

POWERWEST ATHLETICS PWA programs emphasize correct technical skating skills through stride development, agility, speed, balance, quickness, and readiness through the effective use of edges. Our programs are unique in their program format, low ratio of instructors to participants, and are known for their professional skating instruction. Striding for excellence for 30+ years in coaching. Instructed by Mena Westhaver and her team of PowerWest coaches.

Edge Class

6+ Years

Taught in a unique format so everyone is moving at all times and challenged at their own level. Edge classes follow the “old school figure model” covering all edges forwards and backwards, transitions, accelerations and decelerations with an emphasis on balance, control, power, and strength. These semi-private lessons are structured so each student will receive a semi-private skating lesson, hockey skills lesson and have an opportunity to scrimmage.

Daytime Mini Hockey in a Semi-Private Format

This program is for the hockey player between the ages of 6 and 12. We begin with a group warm-up skate and then divide the kids up into like ages and abilities. All players will move through a skating station, hockey station and end with a mini-hockey game. Full gear required.

We will combine a skating lesson, a hockey practice and end with a mini hockey game. Bring your hockey player dressed in full gear and together we will learn all the basics. Jersey and water bottle included in registration fee.

The Juan de Fuca pool has a variety of features and amenities. Our pool is fully accessible for swimmers of all abilities. Equipment and amenities include: • Male, female and universal changerooms • Steam room, sauna and hot tub • 8 lane 25 metre pool • 1metre diving board • Leisure pool including lazy river and tot slide (for sliders under 48”) • Big blue waterslide (for sliders over 48”) • Aquatic wheelchairs • Zero entry ramp into the leisure pool • Handicare motorized lifts in universal changeroom, and on the pool deck (provides access to hot tub, main and leisure pool)

A 60 minute shallow and deep AquaFit class of variable intensity in the main pool.

Lane Swimming

For continuous lane swimmers. Swimming pace is identified through signage in each lane, and includes casual, slow, moderate, and fast. Water Walking is not permitted in continuous lane swimming lanes.

Leisure Swim

Leisure time for adults and families with children under six. Access only to leisure pool and hot tub, no access to main pool.

Leisure Swim All Ages

Leisure time for adults and families with children of all ages. Access only to leisure pool and hot tub, no access to main pool.

$2 Youth Swim

A swim time dedicated to youth ages 12-18. Leisure pool, hot tub, main pool, and diving board are open.

Fun Swim with Slide

Fun for all ages! Main pool, leisure pool, hot tub, waterslide, and spray features are available.

Water Walking

For water walking in the lane pool. Continuous lane swimming is not permitted in water walking lane.

PRIVATE LESSON BOOKINGS A weekly lesson set with one of our skilled instructors! Bookings can include up to three participants with no additional charge. The primary booker is responsible for coordinating participants (of similar ability - within a 3 level range), and paying in full upon registration. 1:1 in-water parent participation is required for children under 3, and recommended for first time swimmers of pre-school age.

LEISURE POOL LESSONS 30 minutes

1:1 Parent participation required. Focus is on entering and exiting the pool safely, bubble blowing, front and back floats and submersions through creative games and songs.

To complete, children must eventually be comfortable without in-water parent support and must be comfortable trying assisted floats, glides, kicks and games using a variety of equipment with the instructor.

1:1 Parent participation may be required. Prerequisite: Terrific Twos Designed for swimmers who are comfortable submerging and blowing bubbles without parents. To complete, children must be confident using equipment to do floats and glides in shallow water and be comfortable performing skills off the tot docks in deeper water.

We will help you increase your comfort level and confidence in the water through floats, glides, kicking and swimming. Work with your instructor to set goals to develop your swimming skills. This program is an introduction to swimming with a focus on front swims.

This course focuses on developing the front and back crawl, establishing comfort in deep water, and increasing your endurance.

West Shore Masters Swim Club

18 Years +

Experienced swimmers of all levels are invited to join us and improve their strokes and fitness with a program designed and led by an NCCP certified coach. Swimmers must be able to swim a minimum of 1000m in one hour. Fall 2021 session will run 7:30-8:30 pm, Tuesdays and Thursdays (excluding Nov 11), and 8:00-9:00 am on Saturdays from September 9 to December 16, 2021. The fee schedule is $155/1, $285/2 and $400 for 3 swims per week – any combination of days/week but must be consistent throughout the session. In addition to session costs, all participants must pay a $39 annual registration fee to Swim BC. Develops an understanding of lifesaving principles. Rescuers learn tows and carries, and defense and release methods in preparation for challenging rescues of increased risk. Lifesavers develop stroke efficiency and endurance in a time swim. Prerequisites: Bronze Star or 13 Years of age. Recommended swimming ability equivalent to Swim Kids 8 or higher.

Prerequisites: Swim Kids level 10 or equivalent AND Bronze Cross, 15 Years of age by the last day of program.

With funding from Ministry of Children and Family Development and the Union of British Columbia Municipalities, renovations are now complete in the upper JDF Rec Centre to create the new WSPR Childcare Centre. Included in this beautiful new community space is 24 new full-time daycare, 30 new preschool and 40 new afterschool care spaces and an outdoor playground for licensed care.

For dancers who want to try it all! Each week we will spend time on both the graceful, technical basics of ballet and the high energy, more fast-paced style of jazz and hip hop. Get ready for some fun with mud! Children will learn some basic hand building techniques and create one-of-a-kind projects. Each workshop is a different theme. Clay pieces will be fired in the studio's kiln and be ready for pick up approximately 3 weeks after the workshop. Workshop themes include: Thanksgiving Turkeys, Fall Owls, Jack-O-Lantern Jars, Halloween Monsters, Cozy Cats, Winter Wonderland, and Trim the Tree Ornaments.

DRAMA Acting Programs with Hilary Jardine!

Hilary Jardine is a busy working actor in the Canada and the US Film & TV industry. Over the past ten years, Hilary has recurred on major TV series such as Showtime’s Homeland, CBS’ Zoo, Syfy’s Van Helsing, Amazon Prime’s Upload, and in numerous Hallmark MOWs. She is so excited to share some of what she’s learned with budding actors.

NEW! Acting on Camera for Kids

7-11 Years

Students will learn the fundamentals of screen acting and auditioning. Using improvisational games, and a weekly on camera audition, student will become stronger storytellers and begin to develop their confidence as an actor in front of the camera. SAFETY Home Alone

Designed to educate children on staying safe at home alone, this workshop covers topics including home and fire safety, dealing with strangers, snack and meal preparation, emergency procedures and first aid. Please note that this course does not certify participants to babysit other children.

Bring your Lego, action figures and toys to life in our Stop Motion Animation workshop. Using our equipment, your toys and the guidance of a master filmmaker, your young filmmaker will learn all about the art of stop motion animation. They'll learn to storyboard, set design, develop a script, create camera angles, edit, and add special effects, music and titles. The final result... a stop motion blockbuster to enjoy on the big screen with family and friends.

CRAFTS Fused Glass Beginner’s Workshop

Bring your imagination and be ready to have creative fun. Make 1-2 art pieces using 4000 year old Egyptian secrets and techniques. No experience required.

Beginners Pottery Level 1

Enjoy and explore different throwing and hand building techniques while learning to wedge and center clay on the wheel. This class is for beginners and focuses on making functional pottery such as mugs, bowls, plates and more.

Beginners Pottery Level 2

POTTERY Pottery Orientation

*Registration required* For those with pottery experience who are comfortable working independently in the studio. An attendant will be on duty but instruction is not provided. Only clay purchased through WSPR, and items created in our studio can be fired in our kiln. Orientation is required for new studio users. For more information, please visit our pottery page online.

An orientation is required for all those who are new to the studio and wish to use the studio for Open Studio Time. Previous pottery experience required.

A great club dance that is fast, fun and flirtatious. Features breaks, spins & solo moves called ‘shines’ and danced to modern popular Latin music. We will start out slowly with the basic patterns and gradually increase the tempo and your repertoire. Please sign up with a partner.

Jazz and Tap for Beginners

Join us in a fun and supportive environment to learn the basics of Jazz and Tap. Develop technique with the help of our experienced instructor. Those new to Jazz and Tap and beginners who are seeking to improve their technique are welcome to join this class.

Hot Hula Fitness

PHOTOGRAPHY Practical Digital Photography Beginners

You will learn crucial camera settings. Technical and artistic components of digital photography will be discussed, demonstrated, and practiced under the instruction of a professional photographer. Enroll to get a solid intro to composition rules, lighting and pro tips for nature, people and travel photography. DSLR or mirrorless digital camera released in the last four years is required.

DRAMA NEW! Acting on Camera for Adults (17+)

Students will work on finding a truthful connection, playfulness and a relaxed ease in all of their screen acting work. Weekly Oncamera auditions and cold reads will help them to make strong, specific, sincere choices in their work. Adults of all ages and levels of experience are welcome. This class is taught by Hilary Jardine, Actor and Owner of Circus Actors Studio. Please find a profile on Hilary Jardine on page 26.

CONTINUING EDUCATION LANGUAGE Italian for Beginners

Wanting to learn a new language or are you travelling to Italy? Join our interactive and practical class. No previous knowledge of Italian required. This course will cover basic Italian, grammar rules, and includes oral and written exercises. Hand outs will be provided by the teacher, but a textbook is also required to be purchased by the registrant.

Italian Conversation

This is a class for those who have a good knowledge of Italian and want to improve their spontaneous conversation on many different topics.

Spanish Level 1 - Beginners

Learn important verbs and common phrases while developing an understanding of the structural and cultural aspects of the language. Instruction will include reading, grammar, vocabulary and application of useful expressions. Textbook and CD's 'El Mundo' can be purchased from the instructor or at Bolen books for $40.

HOT HULA fitness® is a fun, new and exciting total body dance workout. It isolates your larger muscle groups, increasing strength and definition to your core with emphasis on the abs, glutes, quads and arms. Inspired by the dances of the Pacific Islands, HOT HULA fitness® incorporates easy to perform dance movements set to the sounds of traditional Polynesian drum beats fused with funky Reggae music, resulting in a modern, hip fitness workout.

Spanish Level 2 - Verb Tenses and Conversation

NIA Dance

Join certified trainer Melissa Van Londersele for a fun, five week course to learn the basics of dog obedience; or brush up on known skills with distractions. This class will have a maximum of four participants to allow for social distancing, and will be an excellent opportunity to receive more one-on-one instruction than would be possible in a group setting of regular size. Please bring your dog’s favourite tasty treats a 4-6’ leash and a flat buckle or martingale solar to class (no choke chains or prong collars please).

Dance has been proven to help cognitive function, as well as, condition the bodies heart, lungs, bones and muscles while just having fun moving to music. Nia is choregraphed and Free dance combined with Martial Arts and Healing. Nia improves circulation and helps maintain a healthy weight. Nia is great for any age, fitness level, or body type.

FIRST AID AND SAFETY Emergency First Aid & OFA Level 1 Equivalent

15 Years +

This hands-on course covers the general knowledge of first aid principles. WorkSafeBC Occupational Level 1 equivalent and includes CPR Level C with AED. Valid for 3 years.

Standard First Aid & OFA Level 1 Equivalent

15 Years +

This hands-on comprehensive course covers all aspects of first aid. Recognized by the Childcare Licensing Board of BC and a prerequisite to becoming a Lifeguard. WorkSafeBC Occupational Level 1 equivalent and includes CPR Level C with AED. Valid for 3 years.

Standard First Aid Recertification

A recertification for those with a current Standard First Aid (valid for 3 years). Proof of current certification is required and full course must be taken if certification is expired.

16 Years +

Empower yourself and become the weapon that keeps you safe! Topics include: how to prevent an attack, situational awareness, the advantage of being a woman, using fear to your advantage, and physical self-defense skills that are simple, easy, and retainable under stress. Participants under age of 18 need parental consent due to course content.

Fight Back for Women Part 2

16 Years +

In part 2 we step it up a notch. We take everything you learned in Part 1 and apply it to a variety of different situations. Topics include: first strike principle, predator/ prey mindset, and mental attitude vs. technique. We teach you what to do if being grabbed from front/ behind, fighting from the ground, and escaping a sexual encounter. Participants under age of 18 need parental consent due to course content. Fight Back for Women course Part 1 is a pre-requisite. Includes: "Total Awareness: A Woman's Safety Book"- Darren and Beth Laur

SPORT & OUTDOORS MARTIAL ARTS Aikido Adults Advanced

13 Years +
