New Child Care Spaces Coming Fall 2021

New Day Care, Preschool and After School Care spaces are coming to West Shore Parks & Recreation! To meet the growing demand for licensed childcare on the West Shore, WSPR was a recipient of combined total of $3.8M in grant funding from the Union of BC Municipalities and Ministry of Children and Family Development. The grant funding will facilitate a renovation to the upstairs of the JDF Recreation Centre to create the new West Shore Parks & Recreation Childcare Centre. New proposed licensed childcare spaces at WSPR include: • 24 new daycare spaces in September 2021 • 40 new after school spaces in September 2021 • 20 new preschool spaces in September 2021 Additional amenities to the new Childcare Centre will include: • Upgrades of mechanical, heating and cooling systems to meet the needs of the increased capacity and usage • Fully-accessible childcare and washroom spaces • New permanent and accessible outdoor play space and equipment • A "quiet room" for children needing space away from programmed areas • Purchase of new a 24 passenger bus to facilitate the increase in transportation needs • New furniture, fixtures and equipment to operate the space Additionally, the grant will facilitate joint use of the new spaces through afternoon, evening and weekend use by undeserved populations. This includes providing recreation programs and support services in these new spaces for youth, lower income families, children requiring extra support, indigenous families, and recent immigrant and refugee families.
