As you view our 2021 Activity Guide you will notice that business is not as usual as the pandemic has affected our ability to offer many of the programs, services and facilities you may be used to; however this is only a short term sacrifice for a long term gain.

Improve Your Short Game, Improve Your Score Located in the lower park at West Shore Parks & Recreation, the JDF par 3 golf course consists of nine beautifully manicured holes. With seven water hazards and yardage ranging from 79 to 170, this course is ideal for both the beginner and the experienced player. This course will only take a short commitment of time and is conveniently located only 20 minutes from downtown. Play on a first come first served basis – tee times not required.

PowerWest Athletics

PWA programs emphasize correct technical skating including stride development, agility, speed, balance, quickness, and readiness through the effect of edges. Our programs are unique in their program format, low ratio of instructors to participants, and are known for their professional skating instruction. Striding for excellence for 30+ years in coaching. Instructed by Mena Westhaver and her team of PowerWest Athletics coaches.

Edge Class

Taught in a unique format so everyone is moving at all times and challenged at their own level. Edge classes follow the “old school figure model” covering all edges forwards and backwards, transitions, accelerations and decelerations with an emphasis on balance, control, power, and strength. Register for the full program or register in the drop-in classes for $35 each. Please register in the appropriate course ID.

Mini Hockey

In this introduction hockey program for 4-6 year olds we will combine a skating lesson, a hockey practice and end with a mini hockey game. Bring your hockey player dressed in full gear and together we will learn all the basics. Jersey and water bottle included in registration fee.

Reserved Public Skating Join your family and friends on the ice for a great time at The Q Centre. There will be no skate rentals or skate assists available. Registration is required. Dressing rooms will be available to tie skates. Masks are mandatory in dressing room areas and please maintain physical distancing where possible.

Private & Semi Private On Ice Lessons - Drop-in These all-ages lessons are available for skating, hockey skills, shooting, and goalies. Registered lessons will be offered on Monday mornings, Wednesday mornings, and Wednesday afternoons. For special requests, please contact Mena directly at skatewithmena@telus.net

Pro-D Day One Timer Session

This program is for the hockey player between the ages of 6 and 12. We begin with a group warm-up skate and then divide the kids up into like-ages and abilities. All players will move through a skating station, hockey station and end with a mini-hockey game. Full gear required.

Pro-D Day Semi-Private Lessons

These semi-private lessons are for all ages and are structured so each student will receive a semi-private skating lesson, hockey skills lesson and have an opportunity to scrimmage.

Semi-Private Lessons

These semi-private lessons are for all ages and are available for skating, hockey skills, shooting, and goalies. Register in the full program or register in the drop-in classes for $46.75 per skater. Please register in the appropriate course ID.

We are pleased to announce the pool will be opening Jan 20th. To maintain the safety of patrons and staff and to prevent the spread of COVID-19, pool use is different. This includes the requirement for all participants to reserve their session in advance. Reservations allow us to ensure physical distancing is maintained and to provide staff time for additional cleaning.

Lane Swimming

For continuous lane swimmers. Up to four people per double lane. Swimming pace is identified through signage in each lane, and includes casual, slow, moderate, and fast. Hot tub access very limited. Water walking is not permitted during lane swimming.

Private Family & Friends Swim *

Leisure Swim

Leisure time for adults, including parents with children under 6. Access only to leisure pool and hot tub, no access to main pool. *On Tuesday and Thursday evenings, Leisure swim is open to children of all ages.

Family Swim

Family swim time with access to the main pool, leisure pool, and hot tub. Hot tub access limited to two families at a time.

Water Walking

For water walking in the lane pool. No leisure pool access. Hot tub access very limited. Continuous lane swimming is not permitted in water walking lane.

Child Admission Policy

All children under the age of 7 must stay within arm’s reach of an adult (16+) at all times. Maximum 3 children per adult. At this time children 12 and under must attend with an adult.

Rent the entire pool for a safe and fun activity with friends and family. When you book a private family & friends swim, the pool facility is yours for one hour. Main pool, leisure pool, and hot tub are open. Sauna and steam room are closed. Waterslide can be booked for an additional 40 attendees duefee.toMaximum BC Public Healthincluding order spectators. West Shore Masters Swim Club

18+ Years

Experienced swimmers of all levels are invited to join us and improve their strokes and fitness with a program designed and led by a NCCP – CD & ACD certified coach. Swimmers must be able to swim a minimum 1000m in one hour. In addition to session costs, dueofto BC Public Health order participants must pay a $39 annual registration fee to Swim BC. We are excited to restart swimming lessons! For the safety of staff and participants, our lesson program will resume in phases. The transition between phases will be based on current BC Public Health guidelines.

PHASE 1: FEBRUARY- MARCH SWIMMING LESSONS To maintain a safe physical distance, instructors will teach using demonstrations and verbal cues. In-water family member support will be required for more levels than before as noted in descriptions.

Private Class Bookings

A weekly 40-minute lesson with one of our skilled instructors! Private classes can be used for private, semi-private, or small group lessons. • Maximum class size: 3 swimmers of similar ability (within a 3 level range) • Children under 6 years, and those in Swim Kids 1 – 4 (regardless of age) require in-water support by a family member 16 years or older • Booker is responsible for coordinating participants, and paying in full upon registration • $30 per 40-minute class, sessions are 6-8 weeks long All ages and abilities with two options to choose from:

1. Main Pool Private Class

Best for beginners to advanced swimmers able to stand and / or move through water at least 1.1m in depth.

2. Leisure Pool Private Class

For most children 5 and under and for first-time beginners

Ready to improve kicks and arms on both front and back swims, front crawl, distance swimming and surface support. Support required by family member or friend of at least 16 years of age

For children comfortable in deep water and able to swim the full length of the pool using basic strokes. Ready to learn back crawl, elementary backstroke and improve front crawl and long-distance swimming.

Click to search and register Program Cancelled? Sadly, excellent programs are sometimes cancelled when people wait until last minute to register. We need to make decisions three to five days prior to the start date of our programs to allow for proper preparation. Please register early to avoid disappointment.

For children able to swim distances of at least 150 metres (6 lengths) and those that have advanced front crawl, back crawl and elementary backstroke. Ready to learn breast stroke, side stroke, and egg-beater support, while continuing to refine front crawl, back crawl and focus on endurance.

GROUP FITNESS 20-20-20

This fun class is the total package. It starts off with 20 minutes of a combined gentle warm up and dynamic stretch, followed by 20 minutes of stationary light weight lifting using body weight and/or dumbbells to improve strength, endurance and coordination before finishing off with 20 minutes of deep therapeutic stretch to release muscle tension, improve flexibility and reduce stress. West Shore Parks & Recreation’s vision is to inspire its community to Move, Learn and Play for life! Starting September 2021, WSPR is excited to offer a wide variety of programs to suit your child care needs and start your child’s journey to an active, curious and healthy lifestyle. With funding from Ministry of Children and Family Development and the Union of British Columbia Municipalities, renovations have started in the upper JDF Rec Centre to create the new WSPR Childcare Centre. Included in this beautiful new community space will be 24 new full-time daycare, 30 new preschool and 40 new afterschool care spaces and an outdoor play ground for licensed care.

WSPR embraces a Move. Learn. Play.-based philosophy in a brand new, fully accessible Childcare Centre. Our Early Childhood Education certified leaders are trained in Fundamental Movement and physical literacy skills and facilitate inclusive, safe and enjoyable activities that encourage the children’s physical, emotional, intellectual, and social development. The individuality of each child is respected and supported with the goal of fostering their creativity, confidence and a lifelong love of learning and movement. Children will have access to the vast amenities at WSPR including the natural outdoors, Indoor Sports Complex, arena, pool and special activities such as dance, language, arts, sports, yoga and skating.

Registration Process:

1. Families submit an ‘Application of Interest’ form Feb 1st – Feb 28th (this does not guarantee your spot) 2. Applicants will be allocated based on age requirements to ensure an equal balance of ages and licensing requirements. • Pre-placement interviews may be required. 3. 24 Successful applicants will be notified that a spot is held for them by April 15th • Families will be required to accept the spot within a given timeframe • $200 non-refundable deposit is required to hold the spot until registration process is finalized 4. Child registration finalized upon daycare operating license approval from Island Health - this date to be confirmed. 5. WSPR is excited to expand the ASC program with the addition of 40 new spots in its newly renovated Childcare Centre. ASC will be a continuation of the Move. Learn. Play. philosophy incorporating physical literacy, diverse art, craft and science activities along with lots of time for free play and socialization. Peer-lead leadership groups for the older children ensure all ages are inspired and motivated during their time after school. WSPR picks up from 12 schools in the local area: John Stubbs, David Cameron, Lakewood, Millstream, Ruth King, Savory, Sangster, Wishart, Eagle View, Crystal View, Happy Valley and Colwood Elementary schools. A minimum of 5 children registered at each school is required for WSPR to be able to pick up. Priority will be given to families requiring full-time (5 day) care.

In WSPR’s Move. Learn. Play.-based Licensed preschools, children have fun, build relationships and explore the world in which they live. Certified Early Childhood Educators who are also trained in fundamental movement and physical literacy skills incorporate basic components of physical literacy into the preschool programs. The aim is to give children the motivation, confidence and skills to be active for life. All traditional activities including arts & crafts, storytelling, music, cooking, indoor and outdoor play are incorporated each day, utilizing the amazing 109 acre JDF site, use of the library and Indoor Sports Complex, and special activities such as dance, art, sports, yoga and skating.

Bright Beginnings 2 – 3 Years

For those who don’t meet the age requirements of 10 month preschool. Children are introduced to a world of exploring, sharing, and making friends. Includes music, play, art and crafts, stories and active play. Reserved Cohort Pickleball This emerging racquet sport combines elements of tennis, badminton, and table tennis and is played in a fun and inclusive environment. These reservations are for a cohort of up to six people. One person is required to register, answer screening questions, and ensure that the other participants are aware of all guidelines. The person completing the registration will need the names and phone numbers of all cohort members for contact tracing.
