The 2021 campaign saw huge voter turnout to support the best that our area has to offer. Our two-step nomination and voting stages this year created more opportunities for businesses, organizations, parks and people to get on the ballot and you put them there. Round 1 had over 13,000 nominations of more than 2,300 businesses, people, and places. Round 2 saw over 115,000 votes for the top 5 from each category. The past 15 months has been a crazy time for everyone. This year we are celebrating the winners of each of 133 categories as well as the top two runners up. We want to celebrate all of them this year with gratitude, showing some love for their perseverance and ability to rise above during these difficult times. We shifted in 2021, with a deep desire to celebrate more personally while minding the changing protocols and people’s varying states of comfort with inperson gatherings. Our event, Thursday evening at Pybus Market, had a limited number of guests for food and refreshments inside the LocalTel Event Center and a podium for all attending winners outside on the adjacent patio. This section shines a light on the winners. Throughout the year you will see their banners in front of their businesses, logos in their social media posts, certificates on the walls and even window decals in their storefronts. Pybus Public Market Pybus Public Market is a local gem within the Wenatchee Valley. Filled with artisans of all varieties, from bakers, to woodmakers, Pybus has it all. Pybus Public Market was voted World’s Best tourist activity and place to buy a gift. Marketing and Events Manager, Katie Atkinson, says one of the reasons Pybus is a great gift buying location is because of their Pybus Bucks, which are $5 wooden tokens that can be purchased and used at any of the vendor locations within the market. Pybus also offers farmers markets and artisan markets, which the tokens can be used at as well. When asked what makes Pybus the best tourist activity, Atkinson says, “It’s a unique spot, and it brings the community together as well. Locals feel pride when they get to show their friends and family from out of town, and it provides Wenatchee’s tourists with a variety of local businesses and industries at once.”. Pybus was originally a steel company within the Valley constructed in the 1940’s. Atkinson says the history

is part of the market’s appeal, for visitors to see how the steel company has since become an immersive community experience. Pybus is different from other public markets because “The tenants have a close relationship, like one big family, and work as a whole to create the family friendly atmosphere Pybus is known for.”, says Atkinson. Aut-To Mocha is one of the original coffee stands in the Valley, and has multiple locations throughout Wenatchee and East Wenatchee. They also have two cafe locations within the Antique Mall at Cashmere and on Fifth Street across from Wenatchee Valley College. Aut-To Mocha serves premium espresso including their signature cold brew, white chocolate mochas and frapitas, which are most popular. Aut-To Mocha takes extra steps to ensure cleanliness, the freshest espresso and goodies, and minimal time waiting in line. “To ensure customer satisfaction the girls always do their best to get the lines moving as quickly as possible. We have a two minute rule for each car. The girls are also required to repeat the drink order back to the customer while they hand it out and to ask the customer to try it so if something is not right the barista is able to fix it before the customer drives away.” says Kalahar. In addition to the variety of drinks they offer, Aut-To Mocha also serves daily fresh pastries from Glaze Bakery, as well as sandwiches, wraps, breakfast, pizza bombs and salads from Glaze at their cafe locations. Ballard Ambulance In 1967 Clyde and Ruth Ballard purchased an ambulance service from a funeral home. For many years, the business ran out of the Ballard’s family home. Though no longer operated from home, Ballard Ambulance is still a family-run business, and is owned and managed by Shawn and Scott Ballard, two brothers who believe in the power of building a legacy based on trust and of going above and beyond in every situation. “Ballard Ambulance is about service,” said Shawn Ballard, who is both the president of the company, and a paramedic himself. “We are committed to helping people in their greatest times of need.”

Ballard is both honored and humbled to be chosen as the winner of the 2021 “Best First Responder” award.
