Bringing Family & Community Together Through Recreation Since 1934!

Welcome to WA-WM Recreation & Community Services

Dear Members of the West Allis-West Milwaukee Community,

It’s that time of year when the warm summer weather has passed and winter’s bluster is right around the corner. Our Wisconsin winters can seem to go on forever. Instead of biding time at home and waiting for spring, I encourage you to enroll in one of the many diverse programs or classes offered by our West Allis-West Milwaukee Recreation and Community Services Department. Our Recreation Department offers programming for both individuals and families with opportunities to participate in athletics, fitness, crafts, self-enrichment, and much more. Our Activity Guide has something for everyone. These activities will keep both the young and “young at heart” active during the long winter months ahead. Here’s to enrolling in a program or class this winter and staying active, engaged, and fit! Dr. Martin Lexmond Superintendent Do you have a Talent or Idea?

We may be interested in hiring you as an instructor or maybe you have an idea of a program on your “wish list”. Please contact our office with your talent or ideas! We would love to hear from you! 604-4900

Diamond Twirlers Baton Competitive Teams

Diamond Twirlers is a club sport activity under the auspices of the West Allis-West Milwaukee Recreation and Community Services Department. Our State/Regional Champion Competitive Teams attend dance and baton competitions and strive to do other community performances on a solo and small-group level. Members of the group have used their baton/dance skills to compete not only in dance/baton contests but also in scholarship programs, pageants, and community service roles. The goals of the group are to develop ability within the sport, promote teamwork and leadership skills, and to have fun. The Director is National Baton Twirling Association Registered Judge/Coach Kathy Kugi-Tom. Team placement is based on tryout scores. All students trying out will be placed on a team. Placement is at sole discretion of the Director. Practices are primarily Saturdays, January 7 - July 15, 2017. Additional practices could be added as needed. Schedules will be confirmed once teams are selected. No practices on April 15, May 20 & 27 & July 1.

Powers of Attorney Explained!

Ideal for those planning for themselves and those assisting loved ones. Someone must be appointed to make financial and health care decisions for the incapacitated person, whether through Powers of Attorney (POAs) or a court-appointed guardianship process. These are difficult circumstances, and making an informed decision in choosing a POA for yourself (and avoiding guardianship) is critical. Just as critical is understanding the responsibilities you may hold as a POA or guardian in making decisions on behalf of an incapacitated loved one. We will discuss the financial and legal aspects of what acting as a guardian or POA actually entails, and how caregiving and dementia can play particularly significant roles in proper planning. Asparagus

Asparagus is a harbinger of spring but is now available year round. This vegetable delicacy has a flavor like no other; if Staci Joers had to describe it, she would say that it tastes slightly like broccoli and celery with a little artichoke-y flavor. Asparagus is actually the sweet, tender, early shoot of a plant in the lily family. Staci will make several recipes featuring the delicious vegetable that will wow family and friends. The menu will include Prosciutto wrapped Asparagus with Hollandaise, Crust-less Asparagus Quiche, Cream of Asparagus Soup with Lemon, Parmesan and Thyme and Asparagus Riso. You won’t leave any vegetables on your plate after this tasting.
