English Turn Golf & Country Club The Realm of the Extraordinary In a city internationally known for its magnificent private clubs, English Turn Golf & Country Club stands out as an unmatched example of luxurious environment and superb recreational facilities. This Jack Nicklaus Signature Design, Par 72 Championship Golf Course presents a unique challenge to golfers of all skill levels. Every hole has an individual personality including numerous bunkers, large waste bunkers, plentiful grass depressions and mounds which line the sculpted fairways. The property was designed with meandering lakes surrounding the golf course giving a separation from the community and a magnificent Plantation Style Clubhouse making your visit at English Turn an unparalleled experience. The Signature Course at English Turn was originally designed in 1988 for the New Orleans PGA Tour event, which was held at the facility until 2004 and in 2006 following Hurricane Katrina. The inaugural event was the USF&G Classic in 1989. The course proved to be a challenge for the PGA Tour with notoriously undulating greens, water in play on 17 of the 18 holes and its signature 15th Island Green. In addition, the 18th hole was ranked as the hardest hole on tour many times during the tournament’s tenure. Past winners of the New Orleans PGA Tour event include Nicklaus, Billy Casper, Byron Nelson, Davis Love III, David Toms and Vijay Singh. English Turn’s spectacular 43,000-square-foot clubhouse recalls the grace and grandeur of Louisiana’s legendary plantation homes. Surrounded by romantic verandas and an expanse of green lawns and flowering gardens, the clubhouse offers members and their guests the very finest amenities and ambience. Exceptional course design specifically created to address the unique drainage issues that have become associated with golf in New Orleans is backed up by meticulous care and an incredibly knowledgeable and attentive staff. A round of golf at English Turn is truly an extraordinary experience.

A Piece of New Orleans Golf History During the spring of 1699, war raged between England and France. The exploration and colonization of the Mississippi River were prime concerns for both countries. France had established a small colony along the Mississippi near New Orleans. England, anxious to control the river, dispatched a warship to invade the French Settlement. Iberville and Bienville, the French colonists, realizing the impact of the invasion by the English dispatched a small convoy to the British warship anchored below New Orleans. Bienville, approaching the English captain, warned him to depart immediately or face a large-scale military battle. The English turned the warship around and returned to England. Bienville had bluffed the English captain -- the French “armada” consisted of only two small canoes with five brave Frenchmen! To this day, the grand bend in the Mississippi downriver from Old New Orleans is called “English Turn.”

THE CITY OF NEW ORLEANS

NEW ORLEANS THE NO. 1 DESTINATION CITY IN THE WORLD

-THE NEW YORK TIMES

THE FOUNDING OF NEW ORLEANS

In 1718, the Sieurs d’Iberville and de Bienville founded a port city 15 feet below sea level near the juncture of the Mississippi River and the Gulf of Mexico. The city was named La Nouvelle Orleans after Philippe, Duc d’Orleans, and centered around the Place d’Armes (Jackson Square). The society who first inhabited the area was French in origin. However, in 1762, Louis XIV gave Louisiana to his Spanish cousin, King Charles III. Before the end of a short Spanish reign, the French Quarter suffered significant structural damage due to a fire that destroyed the city. Much of the original French architecture was replaced by Spanish styles. Soon thereafter, Louisiana was ceded back to France and was finally sold by Napoleon Bonaparte to the United States as part of the Louisiana Purchase in 1803.

THE CITY OF NEW ORLEANS

Since its infancy and through the ownership of three different nations, New Orleans has evolved into one of the most unique cities in the world. A mix of European, African, Caribbean and American influences, The Big Easy has its own atmosphere. Everything from the music to the architecture to the food is a delight to the senses.

THE FRENCH QUARTER

When most people think of New Orleans, the first thing that comes to mind is the world famous French Quarter, known to the natives as the Vieux Carre’ (the old square). The Quarter is a natural gathering place for residents and visitors alike. And with a wide variety of restaurants, shops and entertainment, anyone who doesn’t enjoy a trip to the Vieux Carre’ simply isn’t trying.

THE GARDEN DISTRICT

Just to the West of the French Quarter is the Garden District, which features a collection of beautiful and historic homes and is just minutes away from the Tulane University campus.

MARDI GRAS

No discussion about New Orleans would be complete without mentioning Mardi Gras. Perhaps the world’s largest free party, Mardi Gras is a celebration that lasts for months and takes place all over New Orleans from the French Quarter to the Garden District to Uptown. More than 30 parades “roll” through different areas of the city on nearly a daily basis throughout the season. The young and the young-at-heart alike enjoy the beautiful floats and costumes, the beads, doubloons, trinkets and the wide spectrum of music that make up the revelry that culminates with “Fat Tuesday.”
