ear Members of the Baldwin Community, I spent my first year as Head of School talking to as many people as possible: students, parents, trustees, alumnae, faculty, staff, other Heads of Schools and members of the broader community. What I heard, while not surprising, was incredibly inspiring: Baldwin continues to help its girls find their voice, preparing them to make an impact on the world. It gives them the unwavering confidence and ability to speak up, be heard and make a difference. Every year, your philanthropic contributions to Baldwin make that possible. Your generosity ensures that we can find and keep the best faculty – and not just the best faculty, the best faculty for our girls. Experts in their disciplines as well as in girls’ education, they understand how girls learn best and apply that to their teaching and curriculum, even as they help continually innovate our program. They teach our girls to be curious and to love learning, to follow their passions and test new boundaries, and to be kind and compassionate members of any community. Your generosity allows us to support this important work while also giving our girls stellar athletic fields, stunning art studios and engaging, playful spaces that promote creativity and self-exploration. HIGHLIGHTS OF 2016-2017 LOWER SCHOOL •
Kindergarten and grade 5 students collaborated on a project tagging and recording Monarch butterflies to monitor their migration route to Mexico.

Kindergarteners visited the Philadelphia Museum of Art to view works by artists they learned about in class. Additionally, 5th graders traveled to The Met in New York City to reinforce studies on Egyptian art and culture.

The Baldwin School Learn to Swim Program© was recently copyrighted due to its unique qualities and successful results. Each Lower School girl’s self-esteem is strengthened through achievement and skill and recognized with Swim Achievement Ribbons.

Grade 4 students completed a comprehensive anatomy study in science by dissecting a worm, squid, starfish, frog and shark.
•
During the annual Day of Service (pictured below), students partnered with Cathedral Kitchen, Project HOME, Smith Playground and Playhouse and Bartram Gardens to give back and lend a helping hand to our community.
•
Upper School students from Baldwin’s DECA club, which prepares student leaders for careers in business, attended the district and state competitions. Team members placed in the Human Resources Management, Modeling, Personal Financial Literacy, Marketing Communications Management and Entertainment Marketing Team events.

Dr. Michael Massimino, a former NASA astronaut, gave an inspiring STEM lecture to encourage Upper School students to consider pursuing careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

The following theatrical performances were produced: Upper School − Sister Act & 12 Angry Jurors Middle School − Mulan Lower School − Wizard of Oz

Hourglass writers earned four Keystone Press Awards.
•
Maskers performers won three Cappies, theater awards judged and awarded by critic teams of peers and mentors.
Lower School students raised over $8,000 for the Malala Fund to promote the importance of girls’ education throughout the world.
MIDDLE SCHOOL •
Based on the student-suggested idea of survival during natural disasters, a group of Middle School teachers developed an experiential learning experience, “The Baldwin MS Survivor Challenge.” Students worked together across grades in their design squads to complete challenges such as a robotic rescue and learning shelterbuilding techniques.

Students joined together for National Mix It Up at Lunch Day, along with many other schools across the country. By asking students to move out of their comfort zones and connect with someone new over lunch, we encouraged the girls to identify, question and cross social boundaries.
UPPER SCHOOL •
12 seniors, 20% of the class, were recognized by the National Merit Scholarship Program and over 90% of the class received an early decision acceptance.

Two juniors were awarded an Honorable Mention Award this year by the National Center for Women and Information Technology, which supports young women in high school and college who wish to pursue a career involving computing.

Dr. Marisa Porges `96 was officially installed as the eighth Head of The Baldwin School on Friday, September 9, 2016 in front of more than 1,000 students, faculty, staff, trustees, parents, alumnae and other community leaders. She is a 1996 graduate of The Baldwin School and the first alumna to be named Head of School. READ MORE HERE
The “Women on the Rise” Speaker Series, supported in part by a fund established by Baldwin alumna Ruth Hochberger ’68, gives students access to women harnessing their passions and forging new paths. Speakers included Monica Yunus, an American operatic soprano and co-founding director of the New York-based Sing for Hope, JiaJia Fei, Director of Digital at the Jewish Museum and Sarah Robb O’Hagan, CEO of Flywheel Sports.

The 2016-17 Baldwin Scholars (pictured below) embarked on year-long independent research projects focused on their areas of interest. Anika Iyer ’17 studied women in STEM, Yumi Zhao ’17 focused on Chinese students’ experiences at schools in the U.S., Annie Xu ’17 examined the field of dance therapy and Madeleine Marr ’17 researched feminist historical theory.
The inaugural edition of The Baldwin Review, a collection of individual research papers authored by 11 Upper School students, was published.
