PRE-ARRIVAL OFFER

FINE WINE

BURGUNDY 2020

Wines from the 2020 vintage in Burgundy are due to arrive via refrigerated container to our temperature-controlled warehouse shortly. These shipping and storing conditions are paramount to ensure the condition of the wines is as intended by the winery. Whilst all adding expense, we understand the importance of these in dealing with fine and rare wines. Key aspects that ensure you can have confidence when purchasing these wines from us.

The wines due to arrive are from the Domaines that we have worked with now for many years, including Domaine Anne Gros, Domaine Gros Frere et Soeur, Domaine Tortochot, Domaine Chartron, Domaine Bonneau du Martray and Domaine Michel Gros. A fine collection of Burgundian Domaines.

Warm vintages are not a rarity these days, as the world finds itself dealing with weather extremes. With experience from recent warm years (and those of the past) these producers have read the weather patterns and crafted wines whose freshness confronts the warmth of the year. With this comes a very clear definition of terroir through the 2020 Burgundies. The heat has ensured ripeness was not a challenge, giving the ability for the Bourgogne and Village level wines, particularly, to be delicious on release. The top end are powerful, concentrated wines destined for the cellar, wines well worth ageing. This is also a year where you’ll find an incredible amount of consistency to the eminence across a broad spectrum of quality levels. All in all, this is an excellent vintage from Burgundy.

The challenge of course comes in the quantity. With global markets open, an unsatiable thirst for Burgundy is coupled with a raft of emerging markets showing interest in these wines. Quite simply put, there’s not enough to go around. We are once again proud of the quantities we have secured, though do know that the interest in these is high and that we will likely be faced with allocating these wines.

Due into New Zealand late May, you’ll find in this 2020 Burgundy indent offer the wines that will arrive along with a pre arrival offer. This offer is valid until the end of June 2023. Pre arrival purchases can be made online or via the sales team, with payment required to secure the wines.

Kind regards,

UNDERSTANDING BURGUNDY

Burgundy is the narrowest and longest wine region in France, but one of the smallest, most fragmented and difficult to understand. With more than 1,000 names and over 100 appellations it’s easy to see why.

To understand the fragmentation, one must look at the past briefly. Once Burgundy was owned almost entirely by the church, until 1789 when the French Revolution took place. During this vineyards were seized and broken up and given to families to farm. French Inheritance laws have further fragmented these vineyards.

When it comes to the grapes grown in Burgundy, things get a little simpler. There are only three main grapes grown in Burgundy. Pinot Noir for red wine, Chardonnay for the white and Gamay for Beaujolais.

There are various levels of quality in Burgundy. At the top is Grand Cru. Next is Premier Cru, followed by wine from a specific Village and then Burgundy generic appellations.

Burgundy can be divided into three distinct areas:

1. Chablis: The northern most and closest to Paris is Chablis.

The only grape allowed to be planted here is Chardonnay because the soil is made up of chalk, decomposing oyster shells and the fact that it is very cold and could not reliably ripen Pinot Noir.

2. Côte d’Or: the heart of Burgundy – which is then further divided into;

a. Côte de Nuits: Quite literally home to the world’s most expensive vineyards and wines. Virtually all Pinot Noir because of the soil being heavier and more clay based.

b. Côte de Beaune: The lower part of Burgundy central is dominated by Chardonnay and is the home to the most expensive Chardonnays in the world from the village of Puligny Montrachet.

3. Beaujolais: a huge region that produces vastly more wine than the 3 other areas combined. The only grape really planted here is Gamay.

Côte de Nuits

The following are the main villages in the Côte de Nuits; Gevrey

Chambertin

In this village the vineyards are on gentle slopes with layers of pebbles on the top. The wines from Gevrey show red berry characters when young and game characters in the richer wines, as they develop they tend to have more licorice characters. Grand Cru’s are Chambertin, Clos de Bèze, Charmes-Chambertin, Chapelle, Chambertin, Griotte-Chambertin, Latricières-Chambertin, Mazis-Chambertin and Ruchottes-Chambertin.

Morey-St-Denis

Not as well known as the other villages in the Côte de Nuits, located between Gevrey and Chambolle, the vineyards in Morey-St-Denis have a good free draining gradient and a base of limestone. Morey-St-Denis is home to the Grand Cru vineyards of Clos de la Roche, Bonnes Mares, Clos de Tart, Clos St-Denis and Clos des Lambrays.

Chambolle Musigny

Wines from Chambolle Musigny are one of the most delicate in Burgundy, they display fragrant fruit and finesse. The light soil and varying gradients of the village create this delicacy and the complexity of these wines. Grand Cru’s are Bonnes Mares and Musigny.

Vougeot

This village is home to one Grand Cru – Clos de Vougeot which covers more than four-fifths of the area under vines here. Clos de Vougeot wines are rich and generous yet not overpowering.

Vosne Romanée

Home to the most expensive wines in Burgundy, the village of Vosne Romanée is home to the Grand Crus – Romanée-Conti, La Romanée, La Tâche, Romanée-St-Vivant, Richebourg and La Grande Rue and home to some of the best domains including Domaine de la Romanée Conti. The Grand Cru’s of Grands Échézeaux and Échézeaux are located next door in Flagey Échézeaux.

Nuits St Georges

Home to one of our favourite producers – Nicolas Potel, there are no Grand Cru in the village of Nuits St Georges, but a host of very good Premier Cru.

Côte de Beaune

The following are the main villages in the Côte de Beaune;

Aloxe-Corton

Home to the Grand Cru – Corton, both red and white Corton can be produced. Red wine from Aloxe-Corton is one of the most powerful and tannic in the area and needs time to develop.

Beaune

This village is more known as the centre of Burgundy, where you’d likely stay when visiting the area, than for it’s wines. There are however some good Premier Crus in this area.

Volnay

As with Pommard, there are no Grand Cru, but a host of Premier Crus, the wines from Volnay are fragrant, elegant and age very well.

Côte de Beaune continued

Pommard

There are no Grand Cru in Pommard – although Grand Clos des Épenots would be a definite candidate if the Grand Cru classifications were ever reviewed; wines from this Premier Cru show finesse, character and the ability to age gracefully.

Wines from Pommard definitely demand age, when young the tannins are very tight, as they age the power and richness in the wine develops.

A few more related notes:

• Generic wines are labelled as Burgundy or Bourgogne.

• In total there are more than 400 Premier Crus vineyards in Burgundy.

• There are 32 Grand Crus Vineyards in total – 8 white Grand Crus, 24 red Grand Crus. Of these 24 are from the Côte de Nuits and 8 from the Côte de Beaune.

• The largest red Grand Cru in Burgundy is Corton, this Grand Cru represents about 25% of Grand Cru Red wines by volume.

• It’s very important to know your vintages when you purchase Burgundy. Alongside whether you are buying to cellar or to drink early. Recent vintages are fortunately all very smart, 2019, 2018, 2017, 2016 and 2015. Each though very different in style. Looking back further 2005, 2009 and 2010 all excellent.

• Unlike Bordeaux, it is more likely that Domaines change hands, personnel change and the quality can improve in a short period of time, so it’s often prudent to read as many reviews as possible to get a sense of the quality level they are producing in the current vintage.

Domaine Parent

The Parent family can trace their roots back to Etienne Parent. He established a professional and friendly relationship with Thomas Jefferson in 1787 as his Burgundy wine advisor. The Parent family have been a permanent fixture in Pommard since this time, with the sixth generation, sisters Anne and Catherine now in charge. Their brother Francois works with his wife at their Domaine A.F Gros. Since 1998 Anne has modified her approach to the wines, 100% destemming, hand picking and using three sorting tables. The story here is a little like that of Domaine Lamarche, where the quality has soared in recent years.

92-94/100 Neal Martin - Vinous: "Including 50% whole bunch and new oak, the 2020 Pommard Les Epenots 1e Cru was a littl reduced on th nose, but it opened with aeration to reveal intense red fruit, cassis and a touch of violet, though the new oak will need time to assimilate. The palate is mediumbodied with fine grain tannins, refined and poised, the most complex and noble of Parent’s Pommards with a long and silky finish. Superb."

Drink 2023 - 2026.

45484 DOMAINE PARENT CORTON GRAND CRU BLANC 2020

Wines arrive June 2023 - pre order now. 91-93 points | Burghound: "Ripe and nicely fresh aromas include those of pear and apple compote, citrus confit and spice nuances, all of which is enveloped in moderate wood influence. There is both fine volume and richness to the muscular big-bodied flavors that coat the mouth with dry extract that also serves to buffer the firm citrus-tinged acidity supporting the mineral-driven finale. This is lovely and should repay mid-term keeping."

Wines arrive June 2023 - pre order now. 91-93 points Vinous: "The 2020 Corton les Renardes Grand Cru has 100% whole bunch and aged entirely in new oak. The stems make quite an impression on the nose, just slightly occluding the terroir expression at the moment. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins, quite austere on the entry, good depth and freshness with a spicy finish. Correct and with its tie tied up a bit too tight at the moment, gives this 4-6 years to loosen it."

Wines arrive June 2023 - pre order now. From purchased grapes, in what is nearly a clos, entirely destemmed. 30% new wood. Rich, mid-purple, exuberant ripe cherries, but not over the top, very suave with sumptuous depth to it, better acidity and fewer tannins, long and lovely. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent tannins, supple and smooth with red cherries, crushed strawberry and light white pepper notes towards the finish. Wines arrive June 2023 - pre order now. 91-93 points Vinous: "The 2020 Pommard Les Chanlins 1er Cru comes from calcaire soils, the vines relatively young at 17-years old. Matured in demi-muids, this has a more expressive and terroir-driven bouquet compared to the Les Argillières. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, quite marine-driven with a lightly spiced and cohesive finish. Very fine."

Wines arrive June 2023 - pre order now. 91-93 /100 Burghound: Outstanding “Note: from 85+ year old vines; 50% whole clusters Tasting note: Moderate wood stops short of being invasive on the agreeably spicy and markedly floral nose of earth, leather and dark berries. There is excellent volume and richness to the delicious medium-bodied flavors that possess first-rate depth and persistence. This balanced effort is robust but not really rustic and is a wine that should amply repay extended cellaring yet be approachable after 6 to 8.”

92-94/100 Neal Martin Vinous: The 2020 Pommard Les Chaponnières 1er Cru comes a massal selection of 80-year-old vines with 45% whole bunch. This has a lovely bouquet with lavender-tinged red fruit and fine mineralité. The palate is medium-bodied with firm but supple tannins, a fine bead of acidity and a very nicely proportioned vintage lifted by the whole bunch. Excellent.

A powerful and charming wine, expressive and generous, with notes of red berries spices

Wines arrive June 2023 - pre order now. 93 Points | Jasper Morris: "30% whole bunches and one third new wood. Lively fresh crimson purple with an energetic red fruit. Very pretty notes thereafter and the structure is sound in the balance of fruit/wood/acidity. There is impressive persistence, the fruit coming back without too much structural interference at the finish." 45492

Domaine Seguin-Manuel

Seguin-Manuel is an old estate, originally founded in 1824. In 2004 it was acquired by 42-year-old Thibaut Marion, born into wine and with experience including the family winery Chanson Père & Fils. The vineyards are managed organically, with no use of chemicals and quality in mind - small yields, strict pruning and green harvest. Initially located in Savigny-lès-Beaune, new plots have been added to the domaine in the villages of Beaune and Puligny-Montrachet since 2007, and more recently in Pommard and Meursault. More than 6 hectares of vineyard are now grown by the domaine. The wines are impressive, the quality will only go from strength to strength and, unusually for Burgundy, they represent excellent value.

Fermented and matured on its lees in oak casks for one year, the wine was made the same way as our Cote de Beaune wines. Pale gold colour, it shows on the nose ripe summer fruit aromas like pear and peach. On the palate, these flavours are enhanced by the natural crispy and salted structure of the wine, typical of the soil. The aftertaste is elegant and shows delicate toasted nuances.

Hand-picked, the grapes after pressing have fermented and been matured in oak cask for one year. Pale gold colour. Seductive and stylish aromas of summer fruit as peach and floral nuances on the nose. Straightforward on the palate, the fruit is already open. The natural elegance is enhanced by a lovely mineral structure.

Hand-picked, the grapes have been directly crushed and the juice fermented in oak barrels. Matured on its lees, the wine has been bottled after 12 months. Pale yellow colour. It is very open on the nose with summer fruit aromas combined with floral, mineral and vanilla notes. Very well-balanced on the palate, the wine shows great purity and depth. It has a lovely refreshing finish.

Gold colour. On the nose, it is fresh with a nice combination of fruit, mineral and floral nuances. Elegant and refreshing, it is straightforward and concentrated. It first develops aromas of ripe fruit and then finishes on delicate mineral and lively notes. The wine shows great purity.

Domaine Jean Chartron

Established 1859 in Puligny by the cooper-craftsman, Jean-Edouard Dupard, the Domaine has been governed by our generations, focused on both the prosperity and the expansion of the prestigious vineyards. The village owes its name to Jean-Edouard Dupard, when in 1873 as mayor of Puligny, he asked the local council to authorise that the name Montrachet - the most prestigious local vineyard - be added to that of Puligny, the original name of the village. Jean-Rene Chartron, the 4th generation, is without doubt the one who brought the most to the Domaine, making wines of the highest quality. Today, it is his son, Jean-Michel Chartron, who holds the reins and is now taking it to even greater levels. These are exceptional white Burgundies.

92-94 points | Vinous: "The 2020 Batard-Montrachet Grand Cru has a detailed and quite mineral-driven bouquet, showing a little more personality compared to the Corton-Charlemagne. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, fresh and rounded in texture with white peach, almond and traces of creme brulee towards the ample finish. Excellent. Four barrels produced. Closure: Diam 30"

Jean Chartron's Bourgogne is always a step above the rest and the 2020 is no different. Behind a color of white gold, we perceive typical fragrances of a young chardonnay, tiny white wallflowers. On the palate the richness of the fruit is present; the body is supported and balanced by the oak, with a pleasant finish.

94-96 points | Vinous: "The 2020 Chevalier-Montrachet Clos de Chevaliers Grand Cru totals 6 barrels this year. Wonderful mineralité on the nose here: this is tensile, energetic with a subtle sea cave aroma that gains intensity in the glass. The palate is very well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, taut and fresh with discrete tropical veins towards the harmonious finish, a hint of frangipane on the aftertaste. Superb. "

93-95 points | Vinous: The 2020 Puligny-Montrachet Clos de la Pucelle 1er Cru has a delineated bouquet with Granny Smith apples, freshly sliced pear and a touch of wet limestone. The palate is well balanced with real weight and concentration on the entry counterbalanced by a fine bead of acidity, taut and linear with the mineralité coming through on the finish. This is excellent.

88-90 points | Vinous: "The 2020 Puligny-Montrachet Village comes from Les Levrons and Derriere la Velle plus wines exchanged with other growers. It has a crisp, quite reserved, stony bouquet - one that you might assumed comes from a much cooler growing season. The palate is well balanced with a slightly viscous opening, fine acidity, a little honeyed towards the Chassagne-like finish. Enjoy this over the next 6 to 8 years. Closure: Diam 5"

91-93 points | Vinous: "The 2020 Puligny-Montrachet Clos du Cailleret 1er Cru is more reserved and austere on the nos compared to the Clos de la Pucelle, wet limestone and hints of oyster shell coming through with time. The palate is well balanced with a slightly honeyed entry, fine depth, hints of apricot and Clementine with a lightly spiced and tensile finish. Lovely, although I just prefer the Clos de la Pucelle. 93| Decanter: "A lovely wine, with bright apple and lemon peel fruit aromas which show a wonderful floral edge. The texture is silky and fresh, but not lacking breadth. This is a wine of wonderful balance that will drink young or age for a decade at least. The domaine has kept a lovely half-hectare parcel at mid-slope next to de Montille that was picked at 13.5% alcohol in 2020. The grapes were lightly crushed and slowly pressed before fermenting in cask (25% new). Drinking Window 2025 - 2040."

41429 DOMAINE JEAN CHARTRON CHASSAGNE-MONTRACHET 2020 $150.00 $127.50

100% Barrel fermentation (30% new oak barrels / 70% barrels aged 1 and up to 5 years). Maturation on fine lees for minimum 12 months in barrel and after 4 months in tank. The brilliance of the wine is the balance of the perfume carried by oak flirting with rose buds. The front palate is full on, exploding with ripeness from the warm vintage then retightening on the finish with a fresh mineral finish.

Domaine de Bellene

Most of us have grown to accept that the nomenclature of Burgundy wines can be confusing, but when you discover that the wines of Maison de Nicolas Potel now have nothing to do with the maverick man himself, that he now has his own estate, Domaine de Bellene - located in a 15th-Century abbey in Beaune - you can do an eye roll worthy of the French themselves. The untimely death of his revered father Gerard, and difficult financial dealings under his own name, saw the young and dynamic artisan launch Domaine de Bellene. Nicolas has converted his growers to organic practices, and adhering religiously to his philosophy, Domaine de Bellene is 100% Organic, Carbon Neutral and uses donkeys and horses for all vineyard work. Nicolas Potel has gone from strength to strength, establishing himself as one of Burgundy’s top ‘new breed’ winemakers.

A taut style, crafted very carefully from excellent fruit and delivering a dynamic Chardonnay with a complexity that belies its price point.

Here's a lovely, fresh and floral, delicately-scented Coteaux Bourguignon blanc from young vines planted in 2014, and showing really well at the moment. The palate is ripe and gentle, also fresh, with minimal wood impact (all old wood-ageing), and lovely, lingering, meadow flower finish. It's the sort of white you can sip all evening without tiring. Drink or hold 2-3 years. Tasted May 2022. Score - 91.

Domaine Lamarche

The family history in the village of Vosne-Romanée dates back to around 1740, and from the end of the 19th Century the estate has grown considerably. Henri Lamarche, a cooper, married Marie Grivelet from Chambolle-Musigny and founded the estate. From early in the 1700’s wines were produced by various members of the family off the prestigious terroirs of Vosne-Romanée and Vougeot, including from La Grande Rue, one of the rare Grand Crus of Vosne-Romanée. This vineyard has an incredible terroir, sitting in between La Tâche and Romanée-Conti itself. Today the estate is run by the sixth generation, Nicole and Nathalie, who have begun to transform the quality back to where it should be.

Burghound: "A wonderfully fresh and bright nose features mostly red berry fruit and just turned earth scents. The racy and delicious middle weight flavors possess a round and nicely textured mouthfeel, all wrapped in a refreshing finale where a hint of sweetness creeps in."

Burghound: "A wonderfully fresh and bright nose features mostly red berry fruit and just turned earth scents. The racy and delicious middle weight flavors possess a round and nicely textured mouthfeel, all wrapped in a refreshing finale where a hint of sweetness creeps in."

94-96 points | Vinous: "The 2020 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru has a tightly-wound nose that took time to open in the glass, touches of crushed rock filtering through the redcurrant and wild strawberry fruit. The palate is smooth and sensual, more density and sinew than the Echezeaux and a touch more salinity and energy on the finish. This should age well, but deserves three to four years in bottle."

92-94 points | Vinous: "The 2020 Echézeaux Grand Cru has a well-defined nose with red berry fruit, blood orange and light rose petal scents. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins and Lamarche’s trademark silky texture. Again, not a structured or dense ‘20 by any means, though there is well-judged salinity and tension on the finish and a spiciness that emerges with aeration."

It is a Grand Cru Appellation of the Cote de Nuits, produced in the commune of Flagey-Echezeaux. The wines are solid and full-bodied and are among the most prestigious in Burgundy. The GrandsEchezeaux surpass the Echezeaux in power, generosity and volume of mouth. Silky amplitude, fullness, robustness and finesse characterize them.

When young, the wine develops aromas of great finesse evoking cherry and cocoa bean, a fine and rare touch sought after in the "climat". With ageing, these aromas evolve towards notes of undergrowth, truffle, fine leather and sometimes an imperceptible touch of cigar and cedar. The tannins are noble, fine-grained, the silkiness and freshness are perfectly complementary and harmonious.

93-95 points | Burghound: "A more expressive nose freely offers up exceptionally pretty aromas that include the exuberantly spicy essence of various red berries, sandalwood and an interesting hint of orange pekoe tea. The richer but not as tightly wound medium weight flavors possess a borderline creamy mid-palate while the hugely long finish is youthfully austere but impeccably well-balanced. In a word, excellent. Domaine Anne Gros

The Gros family have been making excellent wine in the famous Burgundian commune of Vosne-Romanée since 1830, when Alphonse Gros married Madame Latour and acquired his first parcels of vines there. There were various divisions of the land until the latest generation took over in the mid nineties. Today Anne and her cousins Michel Michel Gros) and Bernard (Gros Frere et Souer) are neighbours in the village of Vosne-Romanée, but their wine styles are very different. Until 1994, Anne labelled her wines under Domaine Anne and Françoise Gros (her father’s name). Her vineyard holdings are very small, but they include the jewel in her collection: 0.6 hectares of Richebourg, first planted in around 1930.She has quickly gained a reputation as one of the finest and most sought after producers in Burgundy.

The first harvest was in 1996 for this cuvee. This was an experimental white wine, our first encounter with Chardonnay. An experiment we pursued with a new plot in2016. Ripeness is usually excellent with decent yields. A fat wine with honeyed aromas of apple and pear. Great acidity keeps it from being heavy. The wine is aged for 12 months in 500 litres barrels (30% new oak) imparting notes of fresh butter and hazel nuts. The final result gives a wine that can be paired with fish and meat in white sauces, quenelles, foie gras… An experimental pairing with fresh truffles or even sweet spices would be interesting.

86-98 | Burghound: "A pretty, fresh and ripe combination offers up mostly dark berry fruit laced with discreet spice and earth nuances where the latter element is picked up by the acceptably concentrated flavors that exude a refreshing salinity on the lightly rustic and sneaky long finish. This is actually quite good for its level and a wine that would make a decent choice for an easy-going and forward house red."

Rated: Outstanding

Barrel ageing in 30% new oak gives it the weight and suppleness necessary to soften the tannins, which are not quite as refined as in our crus. It is surprising to note, that given its less noble origins, certain vintages have an ageing potential of more than 10 years. This wine will accompany white and red meat, either roasted or cooked in wine sauces, charcuterie and soft cheeses. Ageing in barrels (30% new oak)

93 Points | Decanter: "This wine is produced from grapes grown in the last parcel in the combe. This location makes it a very cool site, usually the last to be picked, and the loose bunches with small grapes yield a wine with good colour, bright red fruit aromas and plenty of freshness. In 2020 they began picking on 26th August, destemmed and chilled to 15°C to give the wine a cold soak followed by fermentation on native yeasts that can rise to 31–32°C and maceration at about 30°C to stabilise the colour."

92-94/100 | Vinous: "Bright, dark red. Lovely high-pitched perfume of black raspberry, rose petal, violet, cocoa powder and blood orange. Wonderfully sappy and intense, showing highly concentrated if youthfully imploded purple fruit and mineral flavors edged by herbs and licorice. The yield here was just 22 hectoliters per hectare due to hail, according to Gros. This brilliantly pure wine may be even better than my range suggests." - Stephen Tanzer

93-95 | Vinous: "The 2020 Echezeaux Grand Cru is initially bashful on the nose, takes its time to unfurl with light raspberry and blackberry scents entwined with rose petal and sous-bois. The palate is sensual on teh entry, silky smooth and very harmonious. Whilst there is enormous depth or grip, this is all about finess and purity, its caressing vintage. Just a lovely Exhezeaux."

86-89 | Burghound: "Ultra-fresh if ripe aromas of pretty and nicely layered red berries give way to delicious middle weight flavors that exude a touch of minerality on the ever-so-mildly rustic finale. This is potentially quite good for its level." 41059

91-94/100 | Burghound: "This is easily the most floral-suffused wine in the range with its notes of violet, lavender and rose petal on the highly spiced array of red berry aromas. There is lovely underlying tension to the more mineral-inflected if not especially dense flavors that also deliver focused power and fine length on the austere and nicely complex finale. This is perhaps a bit light compared to a classically styled Riche, but it certainly is classy and may well add body with time in bottle as the structure is present to allow it to age well over the next two decades."

Note: from a .6 ha parcel

93-95/100 | Vinous

90/100 | Stephen Tanzer: "Medium red. Aromas of redcurrant and mint are fresh but not quite as primary as those of the 2012. Sweet, lush and perfumed, offering plenty of upfront appeal. Offers good volume and palate-saturating texture, with supple red berry and cherry fruit flavors dominating. An excellent village wine, as usual."

Domaine Gros Frère et Soeur

Bernard Gros, whose vineyards and cellar back onto Domaine de la Romanee-Conti, produces his wines in a similar style to Michel, but very different terroir in his vineyards results in wines with more power than his brother. His quality begins with the fact he owns top quality parcels in each appellation. His Clos Vougeot-Musigni for example, is at the premier top of the cru just beneath the slope of Musigny, hence the name. One of the more conscientious producers, Bernard strictly limits his yields for the depth and concentration of fruit he seeks, and the wines are only lightly fined, never filtered. Gros Frère wines are deep and dark and whilst known for their expressive aromatics, their bigger structure and back bone means they definitely demand time in the bottle.

Wines arrive June 2023 - pre order now. 86-88 Points Burghound:"A fresh and bright nose combines notes of various red berries with background hints of spice, herbal tea and earth. The delicious middleweight flavors possess an appealing vibrancy that carries over to the refreshing if moderately rustic finale. 2024+"

Wines arrive June 2023 - pre order now. This magnificent purple Burgundy Hautes-Cotes-de-Nuits from the Gros Frere & Soeur estate, has raspberry, cherry, liquorice and a hint of violet. A frank and firm flavour, pleasantly ripe tannins, body but without excess.

Wines arrive June 2023 - pre order now. A background application of wood frames the red currant, cherry, earth and soft earth-suffused aromas. There is more size, weight and volume to the nicely concentrated and vibrant middle weight plus flavours that also reflect a hint of acid tang that neither dries nor shortens the finish. 90-92 BH

The delicious, muscular and intense broad-shouldered flavors possess fine concentration and outstanding persistence if not great complexity. While this markedly firm effort needs to add depth, the underlying material appears to be present such that this will eventually develop." - Allen Meadows 91-94/100 | Jasper Morris MW: "Rich dense purple, there is a concentrated wealth of jumbled up dark raspberry fruit. This clearly does have impressive weight, tension too, and proper concentration at the back. Good fruit acid balance, while the tannins are submerged in the fruit."

Wines arrive June 2023 - pre order now. 93/100 Burghound: “Note: from a .7 ha parcel that was partially replanted in 1985 and the remainder in 1989 Tasting note: Discreet wood sets off exuberantly spicy and ripe red berry aromas of soy, hoisin, plum and violet. The generously proportioned and attractively rich medium-bodied flavors brim with dry extract that imparts a sappy mouthfeel to the velvety but firm, serious and youthfully austere and noticeably warm finale that makes clear that this too is going to require extended cellaring.”

Wines arrive June 2023 - pre order now. An agreeably spicy nose flashes notes of essence of red currant that is also laced with pretty floral nuances. This should be approachable after 5-ish years and reward a decade plus of keeping."

Domaine Michel Gros

The Gros family’s winemaking dynasty began in 1830 when 26-year-old Alphonse Gros set up in the famous Burgundian commune of Vosne-Romanée. Six generations on, the properties have been divided up amongst family members, and there are now four separate Gros domaines. Today Michel Gros heads up his own, consisting of his Clos des Réas (Premier Cru) property, along with excellent parcels in Vosne-Romanée, Nuits-Saint-Georges, Morey-Saint-Denis, Chambolle-Musigny and the Bourgogne appellations. The vineyards are meticulously managed on a low-yield regime, with all fruit hand harvested and traditionally fermented using cultured yeasts, which Michel believes provide greater finesse. His attention to detail has been rewarded with numerous accolades, including Best Winemaker and Best Pinot Noir at London’s famed International Wine Challenge, two years in a row.

Wines arrive June 2023 - pre order now. Notes of citrus, petrol and straw are trimmed in just enough wood to merit mentioning. The round, delicious and attractively vibrant flavors exude a fine bead of minerality on the clean and moderately dry finish. This is a relatively dense wine in the context of what is typical for the Hautes Côtes and should drink well shortly after release.

Wines arrive June 2023 - pre order now. Burghound: "A relatively deeply pitched nose features notes of ripe plum, dark currant and a whiff of pinot spice. There is fine mid-palate density to the moderately powerful middle weight flavors that offer very good depth and persistence on the lingering finish. This isn't refined but it does deliver fine quality. *Burghound Outstanding!*"

Wines arrive June 2023 - pre order now. 89-91 points | Burghound: "A slightly toasty nose combines notes of cassis and poached plum with those of violet, spice and a whiff of warm earth. The finer medium-bodied flavors possess a seductive texture on the palate coating finish that displays fine depth and persistence. This quality effort manages to pull off the trick of being robust yet refined. * Outstanding* "

Wines arrive June 2023 - pre order now. 93/100 | Wine Spectator: "The focus is on the black cherry fruit, supported by oak spice and a frame of dense tannins. Young and raw now, but with the components to develop. Fine length."

Wines arrive June 2023 - pre order now. This large seven hectare vineyard in the hills above Nuits-StGeorges has wonderful limestone soils, quite similar to those found on the hill of Corton, though with a much fresher climate, thanks to its elevation. The vines were planted in the 1970s and 1980s, and at full maturity are producing great concentration, and some interesting and complex layers in the wine. It is expressive, with vibrant acidity and some tannin oomph so sustain a long finish.

Wines arrive June 2023 - pre order now. 87-90/100 | Burghound: "The highly expressive nose consists of notes of wood toast and menthol along with cool red currant and violet scents. Here too there is an attractive mouth feel to the precise and even stonier middle weight flavors that possess a dusty, balanced and utterly delicious finish."

Wines arrive June 2023 - pre order now. Here the nose is firmly reduced though the underlying fruit does seem ripe. There is fine punch, mid-palate density and delineation to the medium weight flavours that offer good richness as well as fine length on the moderately firm, dusty and lingering finish that is only mildly rustic.

Wines arrive June 2023 - pre order now. 91-93 points |Burghound: "A very ripe nose is presently a bit flat and lacks the same freshness as the best in the range. By contrast there is excellent verve and freshness on the dense, serious and sappy medium weight plus flavors that brim with both minerality and dry extract, all wrapped in a beautifully persistent and complex finale. Given the freshness on the palate, I'm guessing the nose will eventually freshness as well and my predicted ranged offers the benefit of the doubt. Drink: 2032+ Tasted Jan 10, 2022"

Wines arrive June 2023 - pre order now. 90-93/100 | Burghound: "A ripe yet attractively fresh nose combines notes of red currant, spice, herbal tea and a hint of dark pinot liqueur. The vibrant medium weight flavors possess a finer mouth feel if less minerality and muscle, all wrapped in a sleek, delicious, focused and beautifully well-balanced finale. This will probably be accessible on the younger side as most vintages of Clos des Réas generally are." -

Wines arrive June 2023 - pre order now. An attractively ripe and exuberantly fresh nose offers up notes of red cherry, plum, dark raspberry and a variety of spice nuances. Once again the barely middle weight flavors are not particularly dense but I like both the texture and vibrancy of the sneaky long finish where a hint of wood surfaces. This is very Vosne in character and should drink well young or with age.88-90 BH

Wines arrive June 2023 - pre order now. 91-93/100 | Burghound: "Generous but not dominant wood tussles somewhat with the spiced plum liqueur, Asian-style tea and violet-scented nose. There is a wonderfully seductive mouth feel to the rich, velvety and sappy medium weight plus flavors that brim with dry extract and minerality on the lingering finale where the firm tannic spine arrives in a rush. In contrast to the Nuits 1er, this moderately muscular effort is less likely to make for a good early drinker."

Domaine Tortochot

Domaine Tortochot is a lovely property in Gevrey, rejuvenated by Chantal Tortochot, who took over the estate from her father in the late 1990’s. The family have been in Gevrey for many generations, but it was not until Chantal took over that the wines really began to show their potential. She is a skilled winemaker, producing wines that beautifully represent the terroir while still being accessible and fruit driven. The quality gets better with every vintage. Definitely a producer to start following. We are lucky enough to have allocations of the jewels in their range: Lavaux St-Jacques, Champeaux, and Chambertin itself.

98 Points | Anne Krebiehl: "A touch of spice - something like pepper and clove - appears first. Then there is red fruit and subtlety. The palate is a picture of translucent but structured finesse that puts red fruit, red berry, centra stage. Tannins are subtle and fine, providing gentle firmness in the background. The aromas are pure, precise and poetic."

92/100 Burghound: “Note: from .57 ha parcel in Charmes properThere is enough herbal character to mention on the earthy, spicy and floral suffused red currant scented nose that is trimmed in subtle wood influence. The delicious, rich and solidly voluminous middle weight plus flavors also possess a seductive mid-palate that contrasts with the firm and lingering finish that flirts with rusticity. This could use better depth but given the underlying material and structure, it has plenty of time to develop more.”

48303 DOMAINE TORTOCHOT CLOS DE VOUGEOT GRAND CRU

18/20 | Jancis Robinson: "Excellent spicy power on the nose and layers of fibrous tannins on the palate living a long and expressive finish. It is very much in first gear at present, but has the capacity to open up considerably." Richard Hemming MW

Three types of 1er Cru may be found in Gevrey-Chambertin. The most famous are located in the vineyards of Côte St. Jacques. This slope, which extends from la Bossiere at the entrance of the valley in Champeaux, was given its name in the 19th century. Another string of climats is located beneath the Grands Crus. Finally, it is the best parcels of the alluvial cone at the far end of the valley that merit this name. Gevrey is one of the two most well-endowed vineyards in the Côte de Nuits. This climat of Lavaut St-Jacques is a plot of land which has been recognized for centuries, produces a wine of unique personality. The exposure is due south. The resulting cherry red wine is herbaceous and spicy, possessing a rich structure with elegant tannins. It offers the highest degree of finesse and elegance with good structure. It has an airy grace and delicate fleshiness.

Well-structured wine, with good acidity and firm tannins, ages very well. Can be drunk in five to ten years’ time.

Wines that exhibit complexity married perfectly with elegance, the wine is full-bodied and this comes very much to the fore. There is a fruitiness together with touches of flowers - roses and wallflower. This wine may be kept and be allowed to mature for some years.

Aromas of super-ripe cranberry and blackberry, with a touch of herbal spice. A fruit driven wine, replete with firmness, good length, and a well-rounded texture in the mouth. This red wine is relatively light and can pair with a wide variety of foods. 250 cases made.

94 Points | Anne Krebiehl: "Flinty reduction and dark berry combine into a rather promising nose. The palate is elegant, fine, translucent - almost poetic because even in 2020 the Tortochots managed to create an essential Burgundy - a picture of delicacy, finesse, elegance. This is glorious and such a treat for all those who prefer subtlety to power."

90 Points | JAMES SUCKLING: "Much earthier aromas consist mostly of various red berries lead to supple, caressing and seductively textured medium weight flavors that deliver fine length though not the refinement or complexity. Even so, I suspect that this will evolve well over the mid-term and could make for interesting early drinking."

Domaine Laroche

The Laroche family have produced wine in Chablis since 1850. Yikes. How does one not fall asleep at the wheel? They don’t, though. For five generations, the family has been dedicated to producing top quality wines from this famed appellation, where a unique mix of limestone, clay and shell, a relatively northerly climate and the Chardonnay grape all combine to produce a style of wine like no other. The steely, floral bouquet, delicately crisp, refined flavours and unmistakable underlying flintiness are indelibly characteristic of their terroir. Here, Chardonnay reigns supreme, and under the guidance of Michel Laroche, the Domaine have expanded from a mere six hectares in the 1960’s to the current 130 hectares of prime Chablis vineyard, in the process forging a masterful reputation for Chablisean excellence. Here, once again, it’s all about terroir, with Michel Laroche summing it up succinctly: ‘To produce the best Chablis, you need to produce the best grapes.’

92-95 Jasper Morris - A clear paler lemon yellow. This is a very pure, even quite low key Les Clos but it is fine nonetheless, though not singing as much as the Blanchots before it, and doubtless the Reserve de l'Obedience which comes next. Softer flesh across the palate, with weight and concentration. A very long finish, though, so this may just be going through a quiet phase.

The Laroche family have produced wine in Chablis since 1850. A blend from Laroche’s best vineyard plots, the quality of the Saint-Martin is impeccable. Refined, complex, a chalky minerality enhancing the white fruit & floral characters, zesty acidity and long, fruity finish.

Aromas of lime zest and fresh citrus fruits balanced by bright and intense flavour with notes of pear and lemon. This is a fresh and energetic white wine with integrated acidity and mineral notes active attack on the palate. Generous mouthfeel with body and structure.

Domaine Séguinot-Bordet

Currently working the 13th generation of the family business, Séguinot-Bordet have been producing wine in the commune of Maligny since the 18th Century, with records showing the family’s roots in Chablis stretching back as far as 1590. The man in charge, the brilliant Jean-François Bordet, has forged a wonderful union between the old and the new and taken his family house to another level. Jean-François has installed a brand new winery in Maligny and established a strict viticultural regime in the vineyards, with cropping levels reduced and the Chardonnay harvested later. With the exception of the Grand Cru, all the wines are cool fermented and matured on lees in stainless steel to achieve fresh, clean fruit underscored by the minerality that characterises the classic Chablis style. Their signature Chablis comes off the Premier Cru vineyard Fourchaume, which they part own. With demand for their product at an all-time high, Séguinot-Bordet have had to start allocating their elegantly expressive, benchmark wines.

Superb Chablis from a masterful producer. Jean-Francois Bordet is the 13th generation in the family business, with a stunning winemaking history to draw upon. Off 25-year-old vines, the wine is crisp and clean, with honeyed florals and spice, a creamy texture and a fresh mineral finish.

Bright, luminous and limpid, the nose an explosion of white flowers and fresh brioche. On the palate its all power, opulence and elegance, in a perfect balance of finesse, mineral mellowness and vivacity.

13th generation in the family business, Jean-François Bordet’s entry-level Chablis is vibrant and richly flavoured, boasting a refined palate of crisp flavours and fresh, tingling mineral notes.

‘The frivolous’. A special sweet wine from Anne Gros. Muscat de Saint-Jean-de-Minervois is an appellation for fortified vin doux natural from the Languedoc wine region of southern France. Deep effusive bouquet of sweet nail varnish, enamel and fresh green apples, very well-controlled in its sweetness. Sufficiently open and rounded with an enticing tone of lychees, almost luscious though not cloying, tapering to a gentle linear finish. Lots of fun in a drop.
