Message from the Presenter

With every changing season, we have a chance to

reflect on the time and experiences that have passed and build excitement for what’s to come. Each season, it is my biggest hope that you get to make lifelong memories in our theatre and can escape the everyday hustle and bustle of life, even for just a moment. This season, we have so much to be excited about – music, dance, theatre, cirque, cinema and family programming – there’s something for everyone! I’m thrilled to welcome back patron favourites like Skerryvore, The Ennis Sisters, Sing-a-long-a Grease, as well as introduce sure-fire new favourites, Irish Mythen, Shakura S’Aida and Steve Poltz. Here’s to another remarkable year of memory-making! Caitlin North Professional Programming Presenter, Community Services, City of St. Albert

Confessions of a Redheaded Coffeeshop Girl

Created and Performed by Rebecca Perry Directed by Matt Bernard Musical Direction by Quinton Naughton MUSICAL THEATRE/COMEDY

Friday, January 31 7:30 PM • From $28

Disappointed anthropology graduate Joanie Little feels stuck working as a barista. However, rather than let this get her down, she decides to make the most of her “underemployment.” When this upbeat Miss studies her only available subjects: the eccentric customers of her coffee shop java-sipping ‘jungle’, much like Jane Goodall did with chimpanzees, hilarity ensues with jazzy tunes, co-worker showdowns, life lessons and even a bit of romance! Created and developed by Toronto’s critically acclaimed solo performer, Rebecca Perry, Confessions of a Redheaded Coffeeshop Girl is an internationally renowned show for anyone who has ever had a job they didn’t like! How close is freedom for four abducted children? By AnnA Borowiecki Staff Writer In a surprising turn of world events, Dr. Saren Mahmudi-Azer, an Iranian-Canadian father wanted for allegedly kidnapping his four Canadian children last August has been detained by Iranian officials says his ex-wife. Alison Azer held a media conference in Ottawa Tuesday. She stated that the Iranian authorities, acting on Canada’s red Interpol notice, detained her ex-husband on June 12 in the province of West Azerbaijan. “He has appeared in Iranian courts, is currently out on bail with mobility restrictions, and will make another court appearance in the coming weeks,” Azer said. The St. Albert raised, Vancouver Island resident added her ex-husband is being monitored and is slated to appear before the courts in Urmina, Iran. Before he allegedly abducted the children, Saren Azer was a widely respected physician on Vancouver Island with a gold-plated career. See “Azer,” page 5

Kenney’s bid to unite right gets reaction By DoUG neUMAn Staff Writer Former federal cabinet minister Jason Kenney’s plan to seek the Progressive Conservative leadership and unite the right has prompted mixed reactions across the province and in the St. Albert area. Many who hold conservative views welcome Kenney’s announcement, delivered Wednesday in Calgary, but there are indications he may not receive such a warm reception from the PC party he hopes to lead into a merger. See “Kenney,” page 7

The Bros. Landreth ROOTS/ROCK

Friday, February 7 7:30 PM • From $38 Before they were the Bros. Landreth, Joey and Dave were only looking for a good excuse to spend a little more time together after dedicating their respective early years backing up other artists and touring the world as hired musicians. Originally released in their hometown of Winnipeg in 2013, their debut album, Let It Lie, was re-released in 2015 after signing a deal with Nashville-based Slate Creek Records. The album received widespread acclaim, won multiple awards including a Juno, and propelled the band to play over 400 tour dates around the world. While the band went on a hiatus, affording Joey the opportunity to debut a solo album in 2017, the duo never stopped writing songs that would eventually be recorded for their long-awaited follow-up release, ’87 – a nod to the real beginning of the band; the year they became brothers. Praised by Rolling Stone for their quiet storm of slide guitar solos, blue notes and tight harmonies, lifelong musical hero Bonnie Raitt was equally impressed after catching the band’s set saying “to hear this kind of funky, southern style rock played with such originality and soul will knock you out!” THEBROSLANDRETH.COM

An Evening with Steve Poltz FOLK/AMERICANA

Friday, February 14 7:30 PM • From $36 In the 20-plus years since his full-length solo debut, renowned folk artist Steve Poltz has blessed the world’s ears with 12 extraordinary records – Shine On most recently released in 2018. On the road nearly 300 days a year, Poltz has done it all and more – often shared by way of his rockin’ countrified folk slices of sardonic Americana. Of course, he co-wrote Jewel’s multiplatinum megahit You Were Meant For Me, but he is also regarded as one of the most talented and prolific songwriters of our time. His songs have been among the longest running ever on the Billboard Top 100 – regularly appearing in movie soundtracks, television shows and even the odd commercial. To see Halifax-born Poltz perform live is a bona fide event and one of the most entertaining shows audiences could hope for. POLTZ.COM

Danny Michel

with opening guest Steve Poltz ROOTS/ROCK

Saturday, February 15 7:30 PM • From $36 With a Polaris Music Prize nomination, three Juno Award nominations and 10 albums under his belt, Danny Michel is unquestionably one of Canada’s finest songwriters. His thoughtful lyrics and earnest performances over the past two decades have earned him a devoted fan base and reputation as an adventurous and fearless artist. A musical chameleon able to slip into many genres with ease, Michel strikes the right balance between unpredictability and expectation – which always leaves audiences wanting more. In 2012, Billboard magazine referred to Michel’s recording, Black Birds Are Dancing Over Me, as “one of the finest musical works of our time.” In 2017 during an 18-day arctic expedition aboard a legendary Soviet-era Russian ice-breaker, Michel recorded Khlebnikov, possibly the most northern album ever made. While he recently picked up a Canadian Folk Music Award for Producer of the Year, as well as released his 2018 album, White & Gold, Michel is always pondering his next musical adventure. When he’s not performing, he’s fighting for musician’s rights, the environment, making short films, or running his studio. DANNYMICHEL.COM
