The Prep Edwardian Summer Term 2017

From the Headmaster

I want to thank Mrs Katie Wilcox (formerly Miss Baggott) for coordinating this excellent edition of the Prep Edwardian. It takes a lot of work and logistics to get everything together and keep up the momentum until it is published! I hope you are impressed when you see the sheer breadth of activity that is on offer at St Edward’s Prep and the happy faces evident in every page. The summer term was probably one of the busiest which included Kindergarten Carry on Camping, Grandparents Afternoon, the wonderful Animal Rumble Grumble from Pre-School and Pre-Prep right through to the residential and day trips, and of course ending with the spectacular performance of Beauty and the Beast. Congratulations to all pupils for such a successful term and while not wishing to single any effort out; our performance in the ISA Athletics Championships was one of the best over the years. As you browse through, notice the plethora of opportunity that is afforded to the children which is the result of immense commitment from the staff to make our curriculum positive, enriching and unforgettable. Best regards and good wishes for the term ahead.

Grandparents’ Afternoon Pre-Prep grandparents visited the School for the afternoon and were treated to a wonderful lunch. They all decorated butterflies for our delightful display in the Pre-Prep corridor. We are thrilled with the outcome. Thank you for joining us!

7

It’s a Bug’s Life… Reception and Pre-School joined together, along with new Reception children, to explore minibeasts! They learnt some interesting facts, collected bugs and made snails and caterpillars from food. At the end of the morning the children sang minibeast songs with Miss Ansell.

8

Animal Rumble Grumble Production The Pre-Prep and Pre-School children presented a wonderful performance of Animal Rumble Grumble. The show was a colourful spectacle with many confident performers shining through!

9

Summer Term Sports

Pre-Prep children have enjoyed using our wonderful school grounds and sports facilities to experience a wide range of exciting sporting activities. Both in games lessons and sports clubs the Pre-Prep have had lots of fun this term taking part in athletics, tennis, rounders and cricket. We have seen lots of sporting potential, good techniques being used and a great amount of determination and perseverance.

10

We’re All Going on a Summer Holiday… Reception children have been learning all about ‘Holidays’ for their IPC topic this term. They visited Weston Super Mare for the day and spent time in the SeaQuarium. They visited the beach and had great fun in the rain!

11

A Day at the Castle‌

Year One had a fun filled day at Warwick Castle. The trip started with an amazing performance from The Bowman. We continued to explore the castle grounds passing the trebuchet show. After a delicious lunch we were treated to the bird of prey show where we saw a variety of birds including owls, kites, eagles and vultures. Next we ventured into the castle where the children particularly enjoyed sharing their knowledge of people from the past, our IPC topic this term. We ended the day with a group of very excited children in the Horrible History Maze.

12

Chocolate, Chocolate Everywhere! Year 2 had a very engaging and exciting visit to Cadbury World as part of their IPC topic on Chocolate. They learnt all about the journey of chocolate from bean to bar and how Cadbury source their chocolate. There were lots of excellent questions, including one about how Cadbury support Fair Trade. A few definite highlights included the tour around the factory where everyone got to taste delicious melted chocolate with a range of toppings and the other was the 4D cinema experience where everyone got taken on a wonderful and fun adventure!

13

Slimbridge Wildfowl Trust Year 3 complimented their study on mini beasts with a visit to Slimbridge Wildfowl Trust. They took part in a pond dipping activity and found leeches, dragonfly nymphs, water boatmen, pond snails and much more. Later on they were lucky enough to watch the otters having their breakfast and take advantage of the lovely play area at ‘welly boot land’!

Year Four’s Adventure to Remember! Year Four had an incredible three day Residential Trip to Manor Adventure in Shropshire. The children were buzzing with excitement before we went and even the weight of some of their cases which they carried to the bus before our journey did not curb their enthusiasm. From the minute we left until we arrived back, the sun shone warmly in often cloudless skies. Their teachers were extremely proud of their adventurous, independent spirit and the heart-warming way in which they supported each other as they courageously faced their challenges. They loved all of the activities which included the zip-wire, abseiling, a dark, wet and muddy underground maze, a very smooth wall climb and an amazing four mile hill walk, which included breath taking scenery, waterfalls, steep rocky paths and pretty streams with stepping stones and wooden bridges.

“The climbing wall looks hard from the bottom, but do it and climb on!” – Jack

“The best three days of my life!” – Hannah and Rose “It is highly recommended.” – Cyrus

16

“Abseiling feels like you are walking in the air.” – Ollie

“It was really fun and there was nothing I did not like!” – Yasmin

Year Five PGL Trip In May, all 42 intrepid Year Five pupils embarked on the annual Year Five residential trip to PGL Barton Hall in Torquay. This was such a fantastic opportunity for our pupils to overcome a variety of personal and physical challenges. The trip allowed the children to further develop a greater sense of independence. Time keeping, bedroom tidying, self-organisation and team working were all encouraged. For some pupils new opportunities meant a chance to take on responsibility during challenging situations. For example: ‘who would pull the release cord on the zipwire?’, ‘who would lead as captain, in order to sail the giant raft across a lake?’ and ‘who could clearly guide the team around an obstacle trail whilst blindfolded?’ A touch of bravery was required for the highoctane challenges, which included tackling the 13m high abseiling tower and facing the deathdefying leap from the trapeze. Logistics, patience and trust were also required amongst teammates to cross the challenge course. Thank you PGL for an action packed, memorable experience that we will not forget!

“I felt so adventurous!”

“The best 4 days of my life!”

“I made new friends!”

“I loved the breakfasts!”

Year 6 Go Native in Burgandy!

Year 6 had a blast during their week of immersion at Maison Claire Fontaine in France. They improved their French, learnt new skills, had fun with friends and expanded their horizons during a very sunny week in the heart of Burgundy. Language-learning took place within the context of activities such as kayaking, sculpture, mosaic, circus skills, archery and snail-eating (!), and the week culminated in dinner at a local restaurant and a visit to the market to buy lunch. Children took a moment in the wonderful surroundings of VĂŠzelay to reflect upon the week, and what it signified for them as they approach the end of their Prep School chapter.

22

Helping to Build a Better World… Every child from Pre-School to Year Six had lots of fun building dens in aid of the charity ‘Save the Children’. Everyone worked hard to collect a range of materials for their dens and created some quite spectacular shelters. Year Six very kindly offered to work with each of the other year groups to help build their dens, which was very exciting for all of the children. Every penny raised will be going to support children in need of aid around the world. Thank you to everyone for taking part and supporting such a worthwhile cause.

23

Be Our Guest… Our extremely talented Year Sixes invited the school community to “Be Our Guest” in this year’s production of Beauty and the Beast. They whirled and twirled, made us laugh and cry, and dazzled and delighted the audiences with extraordinary performances in this “tale as old as time.” After all, “what is dinner, without a little music?”

Prep Sports Day Extreme heat served up an exciting treat for Sports Day as an elated Dahl eventually secured a sixth successive double triumph. It was a very close affair with only four points separating the three houses in the Relay Cup and the overall lead exchanging hands at several points between Dahl and Lewis. Despite the conditions, there were 17 new records set, several of them long standing ones, as the large crowd were treated to a succession of close finishes in the sprints as well as the standard drama of the relays and those crucial changeovers! Dahl had the early lead but by the end of the morning session Lewis had overturned things and held a slender advantage. But after the Field events had been added, it was Dahl who had regained top spot. As all three traded blows in the relays with equal wins, Dahl took the last two to not only win the Relay competition but also the Overall trophy. Relay Cup: 1. DAHL, 62pts; 2. Blyton, 60; 3. Lewis, 58. Overall: 1. DAHL, 569pts; 2. Lewis, 566; 3. Blyton, 507

Prince of Wales Stadium St Edward’s gave another fine account of themselves in the Cheltenham District Primary Athletics Championships with a brilliant third place overall at a windswept Prince of Wales stadium. Competing in the Cotswold Shield, Division One, and one of 17 schools, the standard was very high indeed and qualifying through to any final a major feat in itself. But St Edward’s managed to achieve that in six out of eight cases in both the sprints and the relays. The long distance runners had started the meeting off very nicely with Caitlin and Lulu both winning to take gold and Theo E and Jacob B fighting hard for a placing of fourth. Proceedings then turned to the sprinters with 17 reduced to eight after three semi-final heats. Rosie H, Adriana E, Oliver B (Y4) and Oliver B (Y5) all won their heat to qualify and they were joined by Charlotte J and Seth R. For the relay heats, 17 came down to 6 and the Year Three girls and Year Five boys won theirs to be joined by the Year Three and Year Four boys and also the Year Five and Year Six girls. Both the Year Four girls and, a little surprisingly, the Year Six boys both just missed out after finishing third. With the St Edward’s podium on loan for the evening, the aim from here was to try and make it on there as much as possible but the competition was fierce and we just couldn’t score big enough in those 12 final appearances. Oliver B, the Year Three boys and girls all took bronze and the Year Four boys were awarded silver after Roman G almost reeled in Charlton Kings on the anchor leg. So, after two and a half hours of non-stop and breath taking action, St Edward’s finished third with 90 points behind favourites Bishop’s Cleeve and winners Charlton Kings.

ISA Athletics Championships Team St Edward’s enjoyed one of their best ever returns from the ISA Midland’s Junior Athletics Championships at The Alexander Stadium in Birmingham as they were crowned champions for all three age groups leaving them as overall regional winners. The Year Four girls, Year Five boys and Year Six boys were all first with the other three groups pushing hard at the top of the leader board resulting in a truly fantastic overall triumph. Despite the conditions, virtually all of the 32 athletes made contributions to the team points tally on the track and in the field as St Edward’s battled hard and to good effect against the elements. As a result of their endeavours, there was a sizeable St Edward’s contingent selected for the National Championships, again at the same venue, on June 19th. St Edward’s continued their glorious summer of athletics at the ISA National Championships bringing back six bronze medals and several personal best performances as they sent a record 17 athletes to The Alexander Stadium to compete.
