early part of the day roaming around to look for

Having covered more than 35 Kentucky Derby’s on behalf of many media outlets, I have witnessed this
historic event in good weather and bad, each one with a texture and look all its own, providing new visuals to share.
To best recognize these variations, I must take a step
back and view each Derby as if it’s the first time I’m seeing it. I am going to take this opportunity to share
some highlights of these moments with you. Let’s go!

VIDEO POKER: Glitches You may think that every play within a casino carries a house advantage and, for the most part, you would be right. Certainly, that is their intention because otherwise they wouldn’t be in business for too long. But keep in mind they’re only human and so are the technicians that set up the pay schedules for VP (video poker) games. Casino ethics may vary from person-to-person, but remember that when the house errs in their own favor there is no remedy for players. VP Pay Schedules: It is imperative that you own tutorial software and I recommend the grandfather of them all; that’s Dean Zamzow’s WinPoker. If you think there’s a player-advantage glitch, then simply copy the pay schedule exactly as you see it and enter the data into your software program when you get home. Be aware that you may have to adapt an existing table for a different game, but as long as the categories are identical, there’s no problem. These two pay schedules in Table 1.1 are on the same multi-game device and many, even most from my observations, are choosing the Deuces Wild (DW) game. Analyzing Table 1.1: Most think that it’s a nobrainer to simply select the DDW game instead of the DW game but that’s not at all true. The reason is people simply choose a game from the menu offered instead of checking out all games along with their pay schedules. The fact that the better game is significantly more volatile (the variance is approximately twice as high) is because you must go for the deuces more often. Still, the higher ER for DDW more than compensates for the higher risk factor.

Determining Game’s ER: The casino is running the show and if they remain within legislative maximum/minimum requirements, they have the right to do so. An advantage play, however, is still possible when your ER is over 100%, a rarity and probably a glitch. The actual ER is found by adding the game’s ER to the payback percentage offered by using your slot card. For example, if you play the DDW game presented on Table 1.1 and the casino is offering a 0.25% payback (they are on the highest-level card in this casino) and it is a double points day, then you can add 0.5 to the game’s ER. 99.6206 + 0.5= 100.1206% You will also receive bounce back cash in the mail, discretionary and earned comps, plus entry tickets for promotional events, including free slot tournaments. Make sure you understand that computer correct play is mandatory to receive the indicated theoretical return. “Sharing” Information: You should always keep the information to yourself if you want it to remain. It will go under the radar on multi-game devices when the rest of the games offer such a big casino advantage, like the DW game on the same machine with an ER of 94.8182%. Also, this play has a very bad Keno game with a significantly lower ER than any of the VP games on the device. Ethics: Some players have opined that they think it’s unethical to not inform a casino of glitches on their devices that offer a player advantage. I believe that it’s not my job to do so and more frequently the errors favor the casino and not the player. There’s no remedy to even find much less return money to players when the house has a device that pays less than the legislated minimum for their jurisdiction. It’s my view that when a business offers a deal that costs them money, say an all you can eat special that’s priced too low, then it’s their job to correct the mistake; the same is true for casinos. Final Thoughts: There are occasional glitches, intentional or not, in some casinos regarding bounceback cash, run-away free play and almost everything else. You should never ever alter a devices payback electronically or any other way nor should you alter anything else including mailers. If, however, you find a deal or device inside the sparkling and lively casino that seems too good to be true, don’t argue or question the house’s intent. Simply enjoy your find knowing it won’t be there forever.

Let “Stickman” show you the flaw of this very popular but dippy, dopey, dumb betting system. “Over the years there has been a lot of talk about a betting system called The Iron Cross. The attraction to this betting system is straightforward – you will get paid whenever any number rolls, except for the 7. Imagine, when the 4 hits, you get paid; when the 5 hits; when the 6, 8, 9, or 10 hits – you get paid! Even when craps numbers hit – you get paid. You make money on the 2, 3, 11 and 12. If you do the math, you know there are only six ways to make the 7 out of 36 possibilities, so 30 out of 36 combinations result in a win – an 83.3 percent win rate! “The Iron Cross bet consists of Place bets on the 5, 6 and 8 coupled with a Field bet. The Field bet wins if you throw a 2, 3, 4, 9, 10, 11 or 12. When the Field bet loses, one of the Place bets wins, giving the player a small profit – except of course if that nasty 7 appears. When that happens the player loses all the bets.

“I can recall many times when I had a Pass Line bet with Odds and placed the 6 and 8, and threw number after number without collecting anything. The Iron Cross bet will definitely eliminate that situation. The only time you will not win money is when you throw the 7. Sounds like an ideal situation, doesn’t it? And it would be, were it not for the fact that when you throw the 7, you lose every single bet on the board. “The question, then, is how good (or bad) a bet is The Iron Cross? Is winning better than 83 percent of your bets a good deal or a poor betting choice?

“Let’s assume we are playing a random game. Conventional wisdom [and math] states that hedge bets cause you to lose more money. If you ordinarily bet six dollars on the 6 and 8, you have $12 at the mercy of a 1.52 percent house edge.
Multiplying the two you are destined to lose about 18 cents on that $12. “Now, if you add a Place bet on the 5 for five dollars, you add four percent or 20 cents. Add still another bet on the Field for five dollars and you add 5.56 percent of it or another 27.8 cents. You have more money at risk with higher house edges so you will lose more money – period. There is no way around that. “But what if you ordinarily bet $12 on the 6 and 8 for a total of $24 wagered and you would rather bet $22 on The Iron Cross? Your bets would be six dollars each on the 6 and 8 and five dollars each on the 5 and Field. Here you are betting slightly less money and getting many more wins than before. What is the house edge on such a scheme and what can you expect to lose per dollar bet? This much we know: 1. The 6 and 8 have a 1.52 percent house edge working on $24. 2. The 5 has a four percent house edge working on five dollars. 3. The Field bet has a 5.56 percent house edge working on five dollars. “Intuitively, the edge on the total bet of $22 should be between 1.52 and 5.56 percent. Betting $22 on the Iron Cross carries a 3.87 percent house edge when both the 2 and 12 pay double in the Field bet. Let’s check the answer to the original question. Is it better to bet $12 each on the 6 and 8, or $22 on The Iron Cross? “Well, the 6 and 8 at $24 combined against a 1.52 percent house edge equals about 37 cents lost. The Iron Cross at $22 going against a 3.87 percent house edge equals about 85 cents lost – even though less money is at risk! “So despite the fact that you are getting paid on 30 out of 36 rolls, the ‘tax’ on those winnings amounts to about 2.5 times more money. This is not a good bet. No matter how tempting it seems, prudent players will avoid it.”There you have it, another sure-fire bet that will kill your bankroll.

SLOT STRATEGY: 10 Tips to Winning The popularity of slot machine play is at an all-time high. The games offered by casinos and racinos provide an array of options for slot players to choose from and sometimes confusing strategies to maximize profits. Here are ten tips to insure your quality of entertainment on your next gaming trip. 1. USE YOUR PLAYERS CARD If I could give only one tip to casino players, this would be the one I would pick. Your Player’s Club Card can earn you comps for food, lodging and shows. Some casinos even offer cash back for your play. When you do not use the card, you are essentially depriving yourself of valuable incentives the casino is giving back to the players. Some slot players think that using their slot cards affect the way a machine pays out. This is a myth and a very expensive mistake for those who believe it. 2. READ THE PAY TABLES Looking at the pay table of the machine can help you judge the frequency that the machine returns a winner. If you see there are a lot of combinations that return smaller wins, then this machine will usually have a larger hit frequency than one that has fewer winning combinations that pay back larger wins. Some players like a lot of smaller wins more often. 3. PLAY FULL- COIN IN PROGRESSIVE MACHINES. Progressive machines offer large jackpots. The big progressive jackpot is made by taking a percentage of all the money played into the machine. You can only win the progressive jackpot if you are playing the maximum number of coins. Don’t play these machines if you don’t plan to do this. 4. SLOT CANDLES The lights on the top of the machines are called candles. The bottom light is colored, and that color can tell you the denomination of the machine. In most cases, the candles on dollar machines are blue, quarters are yellow and nickel machines are red. 5. LOCK UP A PROFIT If you hit a jackpot, make sure that you “lock up” a profit. Take your initial playing stakes and a little profit and set it aside. Then play with a small

percentage of your winnings. There is nothing worse than the feeling of being a winner and then giving back all your winnings to the casino. I recommend taking a little break after hitting a jackpot. Savor the win and enjoy that feeling. 6. KEEP A LOG If you hit a jackpot over $1,200, you will be given a W2-G and your winnings will be reported to the IRS. If you keep an accurate gaming log, you can use your losses to offset your winnings come tax time. 7. SLOW DOWN Slow down when you are playing slot machines. There are no prizes for the player hitting the spin button the fastest. You will lose less money if you play slower. Don’t play more than one machine at a time. Playing more than one machine just exposes you more to the house edge. In the long run you will just lose your money faster.

8. MANAGE YOUR MONEY Never bring money to the casino that you need for other expenses. If you can’t afford to lose it, then you shouldn’t be playing with it in the casino.
