Design Details

Without design, the world would be a far less interesting place. Once you have the shape of an object down, you can have fun adding stylish details.

COWBOY BOOT A cowboy boot has a distinctive shape that offers more than pure practicality. The slopes of the lines, including the arch, come together to give it style. Fortunately for us, a boot is not only appealing to look at, it’s also simple to draw.

The bridge of the foot starts high, then kicks forward at the toes.

The heel pops out.

Show a wiggly seam.

The top of the heel becomes the arch.

The heavy “V” seam connects the top of the boot to the bottom.

Add a small pull tab at the top, and a modest pattern.

The tip of the boot comes off the ground.

Somewhere there’s a cowboy walking around with only one boot.

KE E P DRA W I N G! Now’s your chance to design your own custom cowboy boots. Add more stripes, flowers, snakeskin. If you really want to be authentic, add some spurs.

Animals are some of the most popular subjects to draw. But if you’re not used to drawing animals, where do you begin? The more challenging the subject, the more essential it is to start with a simplified version. So let’s approximate each animal in the first few steps, and then make adjustments to get it where we want it to be. I’ve selected many unusual species and more wellknown ones that walk, swim, and fly.

Simple Poses

The key to drawing gesture poses is making them look as though the arms, body, and legs are working together to create a purposeful pose.

CASUAL LOOK Every stretching or twisting action causes an offsetting reaction. Sometimes this is the most appealing aspect of a pose. Placing her arms behind her causes her back to bend in and the front of her body to stretch out. This results in a push-pull dynamic.

Draw a pronounced arch in the back.

Stretch the line of the abdomen.

The leg is straight.

You can see the contours of the body subtly rising up and down along the centerline.
