October in Ann Arbor is known for its beautiful scenery as we start to fully shift into autumn. The breathtaking transition can be seen all throughout campus by the vivid foliage that adds notably beautiful hues that we can’t help but take note of while traversing the city. This month’s seasonal shift truly transforms an already charming city into a picturesque dream that’s hard to compete with. Even so, students and residents alike took on the streets this month, showcasing outfits just as beautiful and unique as the golden season.

It’s hard to distract from the scenery all around in early autumn, but the people of Ann Arbor made sure to turn heads by making the out fits they wore their own, incorporating unique twists on timeless looks. From layered crewnecks to bomber jackets to loafers, our street style team ensured to capture these personalized spins on fall classics. This issue allowed us to capture the range and individuality of the people of Ann Arbor through the lens of fashion. The street style team ensured to focus on capturing the fall fashion in diverse settings from buzzing game days to serene weekdays to zestful nights out. We hope this is sue will help strike inspiration, as these captivating looks demonstrate how people put a spin on current trends to encompass their own style and make it their own.

As we get further engulfed into the fall season, there has been growing numbers of people’s clothing fitting the ‘dark academia’ or ‘old money’ style. Plaid patterns, neutral hues, thick materials encompass this wave, creating a preppy and expensive appearance through subtleties. This style of fashion can be famously seen through shows like Gossip Girl and Elite, where this is the typical fashion for those who come from affluence and generational wealth. Despite its classist and exclusionary origins, this new wave is nothing of that nature, as people of a diverse range of backgrounds are taking part in this movement. They are taking on this movement and showing that anyone can “look wealthy” without breaking the bank or maintaining a social hierarchy. In fact, many of these old money looks this fall incorporated second-hand materials from places like depop or local thrift shops. This recent rise of this style creates a more inclusive and accessible environment where more people are able to partake in this subculture. The popularity of this trend also takes away the exceptional and glamourized standards people make of the lifestyle, and reworks it in a manner that anyone is able to partake in without the gatekeeping and pressure of ivy leagues. It makes sense to see a recent resurgence in this trend, as this summer was marked with vivid colors, fringed stripes, and sequins – on and off the runway. As the seasons shift and temperatures drop, people are leaning back to more preppy, monochrome clothing after a season of more bohemian, vivid looks. Fall semester in Ann Arbor is the perfect setting to explore this aesthetic in.

Marlee

Rapp is a senior studying Astrophysics and interdisciplinary physics.Her passion for astrophysics is a passion that is very rare in people; she is studying what she loves and doing everything in her power to make her dream of researching and studying the universe come true. Outside of academics, she has a fondness for house shows showcasing more indie bands and artists.

Her music taste is one of the things that Marlee gets her fashion inspiration from. She typically goes for a more 90’s inspired ‘grunge’ look, as her mom had this type of alternative, punkish style when she was in college. Marlee takes from her mom’s style a bit, while incorporating her own personal flair into it. Much of her closet consists of pieces from the 90’s that she either got from thrift shops, ragstock, or got from her mom’s college wardrobe.

She has her own staple accessories like cuffed pants and tops, bandanas, and statement earrings. She typically shops on etsy or with small businesses for sweaters, jewelry, and crochet pieces (some of her favorite small jewelry businesses are @shop. kikay and @magpiescollect on instagram). A big part of Marlee’s style is her color palette: you can almost always see her rocking brown, green, maroon, or burnt orange outfits, no matter what season, with matching eyeshadow to complete the look.

Marlee has a playful and experimental style essence where she loves adding hints of masculine elements into her outfit and has fun with her makeup and accessories. Her wardrobe puts her personality on display in the best way possible. It’s a clear reflection of Marlee’s fun-loving, adventurous aura. She loves spontaneity and is eager to go to any outing. Her down to earth personality is really showcased in her style.
