EASTERN RAT SNAKE

BEARDED DRAGON

They grow back lost teeth, but cannot regrow its tail or other body parts if lost.

If scared they can flatten out their head to look more like a venomous snake. Along with head morphing it can emit a foul odor.

• Bearded Dragons can hold their legs in a locked position and sleep standing up.

• Despite their large size they are relatively gentle snakes as long as they don’t feel threatened.

The Bearded Dragon name comes from the ability to make its throat look like a beard when it is angry, excited, in love, or accidently drank too much water.

• Bearded Dragons can only run 9mph so they have to be wary of predators.

Eastern Rat Snakes are arboreal, meaning they can climb and live in trees. In the wild they often retreat into tree hollows.

• Juvenile Eastern Rat Snakes are

shades of grey. Their pattern mimics a baby venomous snake for protection.

ADULT WOOD TURTLE

Though they can be found throughout the northeast from Canada to Maryland, they are not common due to habitat loss, fragmentation and being taken as pets. Removing wild animals from their native habitats will have impact on the population and some are more affected than others. The wood turtle at the nature center is very active and likes to walk around and dig. When it wants to rest, it will rest in the water bowl or burrow below the mulch. The wood turtle eats little meals of fruits and veggies and protein and usually eats everything that it gets.

Visit the exhibits at Fountain Rock and Catoctin Creek Nature Centers to see these and other animals. 28
