Frederick County Parks and Recreation offers Therapeutic Recreation (TR) programs designed to meet the needs of individuals with disabilities and debilitating health conditions and emphasize participants’ unique abilities. Programs utilize trained staff, adapted spaces and equipment, and a high staff/ participant ratio to provide a positive experience for participants.

Therapeutic Rec ADAPTED CHEER TR

Children with developmental or intellectual disabilities are invited to join us for Adapted Cheerleading! We will learn motions, cheers, dances, and work to develop a choreographed routine. The season will culminate with a performance for family and friends to showcase our new routine. Essential Eligibility: Participants must be able to provide self care independently or with verbal direction, follow two-step directions, fully participate in activity with a 1:3 participant ratio, and navigate flat terrain independently or with the assistance of a parent/guardian/caregiver who is onsite. What do you get when you combine Beyblades and Legos? Battle Blocks! Those with developmental disabilities are invited to join us for an exciting evening of construction and destruction, where builds will go head to head in the Battle Block arena. Essential Eligibility: Participants must be able to provide self care independently or with verbal direction, follow two-step directions, fully participate in activity with a 1:3 participant ratio, and navigate flat terrain independently or with the assistance of a parent/guardian/caregiver who is onsite. CURIOUS MINDS TR

Time to get up and atom! We will be making messes, memories, and friends. Kids with sensory and processing differences will satisfy their curiosity and expand their understanding of the world around them as they try various STEAM activities. FRIDAY NIGHT REC - SOCIAL CLUB TR

This program is designed for people ages 16+ with various disabilities to enhance their social skills and expand their communication skills. Join us Friday nights as we create, play games, and enjoy the company of friends. There’s no telling how much fun is in store for you. Essential Eligibility: Participants must be able to provide self care independently or with verbal direction, follow two-step directions, fully participate in activity with a 1:3 participant ratio, and navigate flat terrain independently or with the assistance of a parent/guardian/caregiver who is onsite. SENSORY PLAY TIME TR

Let’s have some rompin’ stompin’ fun! This is a program for toddlers with sensory and developmental differences. We will have structured sensory experiences and free play. This is a sibling class for families of children with physical or intellectual disabilities. Siblings will be guided through a seasonal painting. Siblings can choose to complete a painting together or separately. Registration is per sibling pair. When's the last time your tried something new? Sitting volleyball is a fast paced adapted sport that can be played by those with and without a physical disability. It closely resembles standing volleyball, with a few rule adaptations, like a lower net and smaller court to allow for inclusivity. Essential Eligibility: Participants must be able to provide self care independently or with verbal direction, follow two-step directions, fully participate in activity with a 1:3 participant ratio, and navigate flat terrain independently or with the assistance of a parent/guardian/caregiver who is onsite. STORY AND SIGNS TR

Join us as we learn baby signs through music and favorite children’s books. This is a parent and child program for children with developmental difference. This introductory fitness class is geared towards teens with autism and sensory processing challenges and will focus on improving balance, coordination, strength, and flexibility through a variety of stations, games, and group exercises. We will take the skills we learn each week to continue building a strong foundation and to take the first step to a healthier lifestyle! Our multi-sports clinic is designed to introduce the fundamentals of a variety of sports including, but not limited to, soccer, basketball and lacrosse to individuals with physical and developmental disabilities.
