Frederick County Parks and Recreation offers Adaptive Recreation (AIR) programs designed to meet the needs of individuals with disabilities, developmental differences, and/or higher support needs as well as emphasize participants’ unique abilities. Programs utilize trained staff and higher staff/participant ratios in addition to adapted spaces, materials, and content to provide an opportunity for individuals to participate in various recreation activities.
Adaptive Rec C&O LOCK 29 SENSORY HIKE
Join us for a sensory hike starting at Lock 29 on the C&O Canal. We will stop at the Catoctin Aqueduct take in the sights and complete a mindfulness activity. This parent/child program gives children with sensory and developmental differences the chance to explore all nature has to offer. The trail is a stroller and kid friendly, 1 mile out and back hike. The hike will take approximately 1 hour, including a small mindfulness activity. Participants must be able to navigate relatively flat dirt paths. VALLEY TRAIL SCAVENGER HIKE
Families of children with sensory or developmental differences are invited to Brunswick Crossing, Valley Trail for an accessible scavenger hunt and hike. We will meet at West End Park and hike approximately 1 mile while we search for seasonal treasures. The hike will take approximately 1 hour. The trail is stroller and kid friendly. This is a parent/ child program; only one parent/guardian will be allowed to attend the program per registered participant. Participants must be able to navigate flat paved surface. This class will provide individuals with physical and developmental disabilities an opportunity to learn the fundamentals of martial arts, including stances, blocking, striking, and kicking and allow them to focus on individual skills in a team environment. Participants must be able to provide self care independently or with the assistance of a parent/guardian/caregiver who is on site and be able to actively participate in a group with an instructor-participant ratio of 1:5. Participants must also be able to navigate the program terrain, including hard, flat surfaces independently as well as be able to follow two-step directions and express wants, needs, and desires verbally, with a communication device, or with ASL. Join us Friday nights as we create, play games, and enjoy the company of friends. There’s no telling how much fun is in store for you. Participants must be able to provide self care independently or with the assistance of a parent/guardian/caregiver who is on site and be able to actively participate in a group with a instructor participant ratio of 1:4. INCLUSIVE LEARN TO SWIM
This program gives your child the top swim instruction possible along with a strong emphasis on drowning prevention and water safety. This class is built for differently-abled learners that uses an inclusive learning model such as smaller class size and exceptional teachers who are trained to teach children with learning differences. Children with learning or language needs are encouraged to register. Students will learn how to stay safe in and around water and learn things such as front and back floats, breathing techniques, strokes, and kicks. Along with safety topics such as “Reach or Throw, Don’t Go”, “How to Call for Help”, “What to do in an Emergency”, the importance of lifejackets, and many more. 4 & 7 week sessions.
