Golf gets the GREEN LIGHT IN 2021 in Saskatchewan By Andrew Livingstone
T
he year of 2020—either despite the lockdowns and physical distancing or because of them — turned out to be a great year for golf. “For people playing golf in our province, it was very good,” said Brian Lee, executive director and CEO of Golf Saskatchewan. “We had some clubs that reported record years for play, and memberships were fairly steady.” Some players were unsure as to whether to commit to memberships, and tournament play was disrupted, but that did not dampen enthusiasm for the game. “The membership at courses depends on where you were situated—we had a number of rural courses where their memberships were through the roof,” said Lee. “When COVID initially started, we had a number of leagues that decided not to go forward, so we saw a few things… Men’s leagues and ladies’ leagues didn’t join Golf Saskatchewan or Golf Canada in 2020. Our membership numbers took a little bit of a hit, but, overall, play at golf courses for greens fee and for member play was up quite a bit. “Even though the tee times initially started at 12 minutes and then, just at the end of June, moved down to 10 minutes, there was an excess demand and not enough supply of inventory.” The year also saw a significant uptake in junior players. “Last year, there was a number of sports that kind of got put on the shelf, so golf was one of those sports that saw an increase of junior girls and boys playing just be-
cause it was something that they could do with their family and friends,” said Lee, who hopes that those young golfers remain in the game. 2021 is promising to be even more lively for golf than 2020, as people see the situation as stable enough to invest in memberships. “They know that golf in Saskatchewan has been given the green light, and people have made a commitment to play golf,” said Lee. “Even though it’s fairly early in the year, they’ve made a commitment to play golf, whether it’s for their own activity or family activity, already, which is very encouraging.” One golf club in Carlyle has reported that membership for 2021 has already exceeded its 2020 numbers, said Lee. “The demand for golf this year is even stronger for that club than it was at this point last year.” The social and physical restrictions at the beginning of this season should be familiar to those who played last season. “They can basically open at the beginning of the spring similar to how they closed in 2020, which means that it’s preferential that you have a tee time, but the tee time increment has been reduced from 10 minutes to eight if the club chooses to do that,” said Lee. “That means that there’s going to be at least, in the course of an hour, almost two additional tee times if the club moves from 10 to eight minutes.” Some clubs, however, are expected to maintain the slightly longer intervals. “A number of clubs have implemented 10 minutes, and the customers have ended up not backing up on a

golf course,” said Lee. “They just found that 10 minutes actually makes for a more enjoyable product for the people who are coming out to their courses.” The other change for 2021 involves tournament play. “There’s no longer splitting of hairs: tournaments are allowed, whether you use tee times, and we actually received a notification that shotgun events, whether it’s for a tournament or for a men’s night, a ladies’ day, a seniors’ afternoon are also eligible, provided that there’s no more than one group on a tee box at any given time,” Lee said. The provincial government has confirmed that many of the other restrictions will remain in place. Flags will remain fixed in their holes, rakes and ball-washers will

Visitors to particular facilities may notice that there have been improvements and renovations. “Golf Kenosee has undergone a clubhouse renovation, which they’re going to be sharing on social media,” said Lee. “There was an upgrade last year to the Hillcrest Golf Club in Moose Jaw. Renovations are well underway for the new clubhouse at Aspen Links. And, at Watson, they also did a clubhouse renovation.”
All of these conditions mean that this is an ideal year to give golf a go. “If you haven’t tried the game of golf, phone a golf course and say that you’re new, and how you’d like to take up the game,” said Lee. “If you’ve taken a hiatus, we’re encouraging people to come back and try again. “If not, if you’ve got a golfer that’s got a birthday, an anniversary, a celebration of some sort, you can get them a gift card to the pro shop or to the restaurant, and that really helps to make sure that the golf course stays vibrant within those communities.”

espite a season interrupted by the pandemic in most parts of Canada, data from the National Golf Course Owners Association of Canada reported a 18.9 per cent increase in rounds played in 2020.
The trickle-down effect was felt outside of golf courses, too. Equipment sales shot through the roof. New and avid players invested in tee times, memberships, equipment, league play, junior golf and instruction. “For so many Canadians who needed an outlet to play, be social and feel a sense of normal, golf was there for us,” said Golf Canada CEO Laurence Applebaum. “Golf is a sport of invitation, where we bring others along to experience and enjoy the game for a lifetime. Golf is Calling is also a return invitation to the avid players and new enthusiasts who enjoyed the game in record numbers this past year. It is also an outreach and welcome to young and diverse audiences and a powerful confirmation that our sport offers the healthy attributes, safe environment and industry capacity of nearly 2,300 facilities to support physical, social and mental well-being in a meaningful way.”
Golf is Calling, a season-long national, bilingual marketing campaign, features a fresh and inviting energy as the calling for Canadians to play more golf. In conjunction with the campaign, Golf Canada has relaunched its website (www.golfcanada.ca) as a portal to enhance the golfer experience and to support tee-time booking through a national course look-up tool—where you can find specifics about a particular course. The Golf Canada initiative speaks to new, younger golfers as well as an existing community of avid players—drawn to the sport for plenty of reasons, whether it be for exercise, the social experience or the challenge. Data showed that some of the “new golfers” played nearly 20 rounds in 2020. Golf Canada wants to get more Canadians playing golf...and having fun. It helps when Canadians rise up the professional golf tournament leaderboards, grabbing pieces of the spotlight. “When the Raptors were playing great, there were more kids playing hoops outside,” Applebaum said. “When Bianca Andreescu played, I saw people playing more tennis. When (LPGA star) Brooke (Henderson) was in contention or our fellas are playing well on the PGA Tour, people get behind the sport.”

8. SHOT SCOPE PRO L1 LASER RANGEFINDER Following up on its V3 Smart Golf Watch, Shot Scope releases its first laser rangefinder: the PRO L1. Lightweight and easy to use, this rangefinder includes Advanced Slope Technology for compensated distance readings, whether the target is uphill or downhill. It’s also accurate up to 3.6 inches. With six-times magnification, the PRO L1 has a range of up to 875 yards, and Target Lock Vibration so it knows when the target is hit. 11. COBRA GOLF 3D PRINTED PUTTER
SIK Golf, creator of patented Descending Loft Technology and Cobra Golf, continue their partnership to create golf’s first 3D printed commercial putter: the KING Supersport-35 putter. A fully-milled putter re-engineered into an aluminum face insert, the Supersport-35 boasts weight-saving technology and a slightly softer feel than SIK’s all-steel traditional putters. Signature face designs use four descending lofts from 4° to 1° to ensure the most consistent launch angle, truer roll and improved distance control for golfers who deloft or add loft to the putter at impact. Hewlett Packard’s Metal Jet technology was used in the creation of the Supersport-35, which saw 35 different designs over eight months during prototype creation.
