Welcome to the 41st CAMRA Peterborough Beer Festival

A

warm welcome again to the Peterborough Beer Festival, organised and run by the volunteers of the Peterborough & District branch of CAMRA – The Campaign for Real Ale. Since September last year our committee of unpaid volunteers have been assessing the merits and challenges of last year’s festival to make this one better. I shudder to think of the amount of man hours they have put into this wonderful event for you all to come and enjoy. I also must thank all the people who volunteered to work this year through the website or obtaining a form from one of the committee. These volunteers, many of them, who since last Thursday, have taken leave from work or just rolled out of bed (they know who they are) to help set-up and now run this event. Don’t think that volunteering is just for the Beer Festival, we are always on the lookout for new or returning volunteers to help the branch throughout the year. Don’t hesitate to ask for me to discuss the opportunities which range from sitting on beer tasting panels, to surveying pubs and distributing newsletters. Of course, every one of you visiting the festival makes a huge contribution to its success, generating a great atmosphere and of course drinking our fine selection of drink. Again, we have been slightly tweaking the position of the bars with the following key changes: n Cider and Perry Bar is now back in the south marquee next to Bar 1 n The Wine Bar is moved to the north marquee at the end of Bar 4 n Next to the Wine Bar we have our all new Gin Bar, staffed by volunteers for the first time! The rest of the layout remains the same with the food vendors, fun fare, toilets and St John’s Ambulance all outside. We still have a huge range of real ales, (over 400); ciders, perries and British produced wines, with our World Beers also a feature. The popular ‘one off’ Singles Bar is still with us with only one beer from each featured brewery on the bar. This bar also contains the three winners from

Peterborough CAMRA’s first every Home Brewer Competition. Having judged the 40 or so entrants back in May, I can honestly say there is a great deal of talent out there in- home brew land with many of the beers giving the best commercial brewers a run for their money. Thanks, must also go to Mile Tree and Extreme Ales breweries who have helped the home brewers brew the beers especially for this festival. As usual we have live music on the stage each night and on Friday and Saturday afternoon. We have managed to keep our admission prices at the same level as last year despite of ever rising costs. For the night owls amongst you the bars will remain open till 11-30pm on Friday and Saturday nights. Please listen to the announcements about returning your glasses unless you wish to keep them. The glasses return counter will close approximately 30 minutes after time has been called. Please respect the staff who may have been on their feet for a very long day. As with all licensed premises we are governed by the same rules as any pub. So, we can refuse to serve any customers who become abusive to staff or we think have had more than enough to drink. The local branch of CAMRA continues to campaign to keep existing and encourage new pubs. There are several pubs with uncertain futures including The Cherry Tree on Oundle Road, Heron in Stanground and Ploughman at Werrington. For the last few months I have seeking a Campaigns Officer who can work with these pubs in trying to keep them open. I know this is a challenging post which requires the right someone, if you think you are that person I am desperate to hear from you. If you would like to be part of the CAMRA happy family, then head for the membership stand and join up to the most successful consumer campaigning group that exists. The cost is minimal, but the benefits are huge. Drink on…but responsibly, Matt Mace Peterborough & District Branch Chairman chairman@real-ale.org.uk PETERBOROUGH BEER FESTIVAL 2018

Have Fun at the Festival

e all hope that your visit to the Beer Festival this year will be a memorable one. Remember without your support the festival could not take place, and the chance to sample some of the excellent brews on offer would be lost. Please try and imagine the festival marquees as one giant pub. Of course, as with all pubs there are certain rules we have to comply with. The times of opening are published in the programme and the marquees are completely non-smoking. Accompanied children are allowed in the bar marquees but please keep them away from the bar serveries. And remember that it is against the law to drink alcohol on site if you are under 18. You will need to buy a glass before you start. If it gets too sticky or you want to change glass sizes just take it back to the glasses counter and exchange it. The Beer Festival serves all beer, cider and wine in oversized glasses with government stamped line measured markings to ensure that you, the customer, gets a full measure in your glass. Please be careful if you put your glass down on a table, on the grass or anywhere that it could be knocked over and broken. If such an event does occur, please inform a member of staff or security that there is broken glass. On no account attempt to pick up the pieces yourself. We have staff with the proper equipment to retrieve it safely. Do not grind it into the grass! Other events take place on this site after we have finished.

Be careful not to leave your glass unattended. Remember – You paid for it! To ensure you enjoy the festival at all times we advise you to start off with some light beers, say a mild or low gravity ale, then on to something a bit stronger. Starting off with the strongest beers on the menu means your taste buds get no chance to enjoy the different flavours that the various brews offer. As with any other pub we do have the right to eject any person who we feel is a threat to other customers or our staff. Thankfully this is a very rare occurrence. Also remember that, just like other pubs, you are not allowed to drink your own alcohol on site and illegal drugs are totally banned and their use will result in a call to the police. Finally let me remind you of the dedicated staff who are serving you at the festival. Every one of them is an unpaid volunteer, so please be patient at busy times. The person serving you may well have been on duty for the best part of the day, or the whole week and are naturally starting to flag a bit! You can help these people by joining CAMRA and offering to help run the festival. Cheers! Enjoy the Festival

Entertainment & Music at the Festival

P

eterborough Beer Festival is here again with a “MASSIVE” thank you to ALL of the bands and entertainers that have given their time and commitment to perform at this year’s beer festival. The atmosphere within the Entertainment Tent at PBF is quite unique in offering a huge covered area, a first class sound/lighting system and a varied music selection that’s always appreciated by festival goers, old and young alike, throughout the five days of our festival. As well as the evening entertainment, do bear in mind other acts during the course of the festival. Peterborough Morris will be entertaining us at different locations around the site on the TUESDAY evening from around 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm, plus The Palmy Uke Band will be on the main stage FRIDAY teatime around 4:00 p.m. and we have FULL

TUESDAY 21ST AUGUST Open Mic with Stacey

With the popularity of Open Mic evenings ever increasing around pubs in the Peterborough area, this has now become a regular feature of PBF. We are looking forward to giving another opportunity to some of our less well known individuals to show off their unique talents on the Beer Festival Stage. This event will again be hosted by Stacy, so if you would like the opportunity to appear, do please contact her IN ADVANCE to register your interest. Walkway

Following the success of opening for Status Quo, The Darkness, Black Stone Cherry, Slade, Bernie Marsden (Whitesnake), Eric Martin (Mr Big), Graham Bonnet (Rainbow); Walkway’s distinct vocals, jaw dropping solos and solid rhythm section have created a huge buzz and gained the band the reputation as one of the UK’s best unsigned rock bands. In July 2017 the band released their highly anticipated third album, titled ‹WWIII›. Recorded in thirteen days at Sonic One Studio and mastered at the legendary Abbey Road Studio’s by Sean Magee. The album contains twelve new Walkway songs, plus a tribute to the late Status Quo Guitarist/ Vocalist Rick Parfitt with a cover of Quo’s “Rain” featuring the original Status Quo Drummer John Coghlan guesting on drums. “Really enjoyed it, loved the energy you guys had. You boys are annoyingly good”Rick Parfitt & Francis Rossi (Status Quo) “I actually felt like I was at your show…” Dan Hawkins (Guitarist for The Darkness) www.officialwalkway.com ON STAGE FROM AROUND 9:00 PM

The Palmy Uke Band (P.U.B. for short) is an eclectic mix of music and performers attracting a huge range of audiences at a wide variety of venues from the Peterborough Beer Festival to Fetes & Charity events. In fact anywhere that people like to gather to have a jolly good time! We make it our business to share Ukulele love, joy and happiness wherever we go by putting our spin on popular sing along, foot stomping tunes from the 60’s, 70’s & 80’s; Johnny Cash and The Beatles to The Kinks, Neil Diamond, Tom Jones, The Undertones, and many, many more. Although we’re a bit of an odd bunch from all different sorts of backgrounds & professions (we even have our own bona fide 1980’s pop star in our midst.....see if you can spot him!) we all rub along very nicely and are, as the song goes, “Happy Together”. www.palmyukeband.com ON STAGE FROM AROUND 4:00 PM

Revolver

Revolver have become known for their highly energetic stage performances of all the biggest indie anthems. A very visual band to watch, they manage to engage the audience from the word go and make any event belong to the audience as much as the band. Don’t be surprised to see frontman Nok bring his Geordie charm into the crowd and get the less shy joining in. With over 300 gigs behind them in the five and a half years since vocalist Nok and Mark Delaine Smith (Former member of the UKs top Oasis tribute) started the band in 2013, Revolver have been earning the main billing on many festivals from the North East down to local ones in their Lincolnshire homeland. Joining Nok and Mark are the dynamic Danny Hunt on guitar and explosive Dan Spence on drums. It has often been commented that when watching the band you can’t keep still, whichever one of the four you watch there’s always something going on. If you are into the big indie numbers by Oasis, The Kaiser Chiefs, Stereophonics, Feeder, U2, up to date pop like Walk the Moon or classics by The Jam, The Police, Erasure and even quirky stuff like Wheatus PETERBOROUGH BEER FESTIVAL 2018

The Dizzie Miss Lizzys

The Dizzy Miss Lizzys began in 2012 after an invitation to perform with PETE BEST, the original drummer of the Beatles. Their sound then evolved from a Beatle tribute band to a three part harmony heavy rock band of the highest order. Gizz Butt, the guitarist virtuoso known for playing for The Prodigy (headlining Glastonbury, Reading and playing to 250,000 in Moscow Red Square) and chart success with his own band Janus Stark, formed the band with drummer legend Fozzy and they have shot to Peterborough high popularity status in a wake of packed dance floors and face melting, hard rocking guitar and drum wizardry. Fusing The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Lenny Kravitz, Free, The Eagles, Cream, Bowie, Bolan, GNR and Queen in a heavy rocking unique way like nobody else.

Joined by the fantastically talented Ex Midget singer-guitarist Richard Gombault and Paul Macca lookalike Si Martin they have gone on to become one of Peterborough’s most popular and adored local rock bands Red hot and raunchy, rock n roll and heavy rockin’ fretwork, sing your lungs out with The Dizzy Miss Lizzys. KEY KEG BAR

Key Keg Bar T

he reason why Key Keg beers are being featured at Beer Festivals is that this year there has seen an official acceptance from CAMRA that the product that is held within a Key Keg is in fact, REAL. As usual PBF have led the field in this area and this is the third year we have featured Key Keg beers and the bar has grown considerably in that time. The Key Keg selection for this beer festival features some of the most sought after and game changing brewers in the UK today. Some of the brewers have only been brewing a short time, whilst others have been around for quite a while now and are very well established. What they all have in common is the desire to make incredible beer and to get it out to the public in the best possible condition. There will only be 18 “taps” on at any given time and around 45 different beers

to choose from during the festival. In order to avoid disappointment, check back regularly as these kegs will come and go pretty quickly. We will not be holding back any stock so get them while you can, when they’re gone, they’re gone. Key Keg beers are dispensed quite differently from Cask Ales and are served chilled with several available as a “lager” style of beer. We have a massive range of ALL styles of beers guaranteed to please all. The Staff serving you on the Key Keg bar have specialist knowledge of the entire range of beers and would love to speak with you, should you have any questions. PLEASE do speak to us about the range of beers on the Key Keg bar. Mike Lane Key Keg Bar Organiser

Cooper Demonstration

W

e are fortunate once again to have a visit from T & R Theakston’s Master Cooper, Jonathan Manby on Tuesday. This Year he is accompanied by his apprentice Euan Findlay. T & R Theakston are one of the few British brewers who still employ a full-time cooper. Although their beers are no longer delivered in oak casks some of their beers are matured in the wood. Jonathan was trained by Master Brewer and cooper, Clive Hollis, and is one of the few remaining coopers in the country. Everyone who has watched Jonathan’s demonstration of his craft has enjoyed watching him create casks with tools that haven’t changed in centuries. If you didn’t catch it last year, then make sure that you do not miss the chance to observe and marvel at his skill in the north tent. PETERBOROUGH BEER FESTIVAL 2018

Gin Bar

J

ust when you thought Peterborough CAMRA Beer Festival couldn’t get any better, 2018 sees the launch of our very own gin bar. With the success of the gin stall last year, the Forty-Thirst year will see it brought in-house (and we’re just a little excited about it!). A lot of love has gone into sourcing 50 gins, which will be on in rotation during the festival, see menu boards. We will have a variety of Old Tom, London Dry, New Western and Flavoured gins (all at least 37.5%). As the Lyme Bay wine is always well received, we will have two Lyme Bay gins (a dry and a pink grapefruit). We have also sourced some local gins such as Pin Gin (Lincs); Adnams (Suffolk); Blue Monkey

(Nottingham); Cambridge Dry and Dr J’s (Cambridge); and Black Shuck (Norfolk). There will also be some delights from further afield, such as Malfy (Italy); Monkey 47 (Germany); and three Norde’s Galician, Gin Mare, Puerto De Indias (Spain). We also have six gins that are made by Brewery’s. Fever Tree Tonic will be sponsoring the gin bar with six varieties to choose from. Fever Tree is considered to be one of the best tonics, made from the highest quality, naturally-sourced ingredients. So, whether you are new to gin or a seasoned taster, come and find us in the North marquee where our excited GINius bar team will be happy to recommend a beauty to try. Enjoy but drink responsibly.

The PBF 2018 “Home Brew Off”

2

018 has seen the arrival of the Peterborough Beer Festival brewing competition, the Peterborough CAMRA branch was approached by the “Anglian Craft Brewers” to see if we’d be interested in getting involved in arranging a competition. Competitors were asked to produce a litre of beer to be judged in one of three ABV categories: 3%-3.9%, 4%-4.9% and 5%+. The prize for each winning brewer was to spend the day with a local brewery to produce a firkin of their beer to be put on the singles bar at this year’s PBF.

With 27 entries across the three categories members of the Peterborough CAMRA branch happily jumped at the chance to volunteer to judge the beers! The standard of beer entered was extremely high and many of the panel commented that the beers would not be out of place behind a bar.

WINNERS: 3%-3.9% Ashley Carr from Norfolk with his American Pale Ale “Duke of Jarl” 3.8%. He brewed with Mike from Xtreme Ales 4%-4.9% Piotr Mikucki from Peterborough with his take on a Belgian Peat Milk Stout “My name is mud” 4.9%. Piotr brewed with Richard from Mile Tree brewery. 5%+ Charlie Abbott/Jason Jones from Huntingdon with their American IPA “Pidley Cheeks” 6%. They have brewed in conjunction with Mike from Xtreme Ales.

CIDER & PERRY BAR

Cider & Perry Bar

W

elcome to the cider and perry bar; I hope you like the new location in the South Marquee, which gives us a little more space and hence a slightly increase range over last year. We have a wide range of traditionally made ciders and perries from all over the country, but because of the popularity of cider containing fruit and other flavourings we also have a good selection of these. You will therefore find on the bar strawberry, cherry, mango and other fruit ciders, also ginger, rhubarb, even rum & raisin and gin & tonic. You will note that most of the fruit ciders are 4% ABV, considerably weaker than most of the non-fruit ciders. The majority of the ciders are still, although some will sparkle a little due to the residual fermentation in the tubs and boes. Because of the nature of the fermentation process real ciders and perries may be crystal clear, hazy or even cloudy, but not so opaque as to make them look unappealing in the glass. We are also selling a range of non-alcoholic apple juices on the bar. These are 100% juice and very refreshing. Our knowledgeable bar staff will be very happy to give small tastes and discuss the drinks with you provided the bar is not too busy.

This year we will be running a Cider / Perry of the Festival Competition. There will be three sections; traditional cider, traditional perry and fruit cider. We will be looking for nominations; this will take place on Tuesday August 21st and anyone at the Festival can take part. The si in each category with the most nominations will be judged by a tasting panel on Wednesday with the results announced on Wednesday afternoon. Most ciders / perries are made from a blend of apple / pear varieties; where a single variety has been used this is on the tub label. All the ciders and perries have been categorized as Very Dry, Dry, Medium Dry, Medium, Medium Sweet, Sweet or Very Sweet. You may not always agree with us, particularly since some tubs can change in character as they are drunk, but it shouldn’t be too far off. By all means refer to the program and every effort has been made to ensure that it is accurate; nevertheless it has to be printed long before the cider actually arrives so discrepancies with the tub labels can occur. We are confident that whatever your taste in cider / perry there is something for you here. Wassail! Chris Rogers Cider Bar Manager

The tub labels are the best source of information when ordering since, unlike the program, they are only printed after the cider has been tasted. Green labels are cider and yellow labels are perry. CIDERS

Chuck it in the Bucket

T

his 30 years plus connection must be one of the RNLI’s most effective friendships with thousands of pounds raised annually for the Lifeboats. Last year you (Beer Festival visitors) donated £8,700.08 which is absolutely amazing and received with many, many, thanks to you all from the RNLI. The resounding cry of “chuck it in the bucket” and “thank you very much sir/ madam” has become a well-known refrain and is an integral part of front of house. This year I would like to bring you up to date with what is happening with the RNLI’s venture into looking after us on our beaches. As well as having over 350 lifeboats in the fleet stationed around the UK and Ireland, RNLI Lifeguards also patrol over 240 beaches across the UK and Channel Islands. Whilst a full 2017 RNLI Lifeguard Annual Report can be downloaded from the Net – a few facts here make interesting reading. Across our beaches in 2017 24,044 people were aided with 84 lives definitely saved. This is amazing when you think that only a few years ago beach safety was just an ambition.

78

Our lifeguards receive world-class training and face high standards of assessment to help ensure they are ready to fulfil their role safely. Each lifeguard also has to regularly show that they have the fitness needed to carry out rescues, and monthly tests check that they can complete fitness challenges. With the temperature of our sea far removed from “Bay Watch” wet suits are an essential item of kit. Whilst well trained, lifeguards also need essential kit to save lives and ensure that this can be done in the most effective way for the person in distress. Depending on the beach station, on your next trip to one of our seaside towns, you may well see Lifeguards using jet ski’s, a patrol vehicle, a quadbike, rescue boards, rescue tubes, first aid kits and a defibrillator. These are obviously not cheap and are provided from the generosity of your donations. As a guide, the Cromer Lifeguard station currently has a £32,000 appeal to fully equip and run the station. This is one of our newer lifeguard stations and fills in the gap between Sheringham and Mundesley. Finally, once again, a big thank you to the Peterborough Branch of CAMRA for allowing us to wave our buckets, raise much needed funds for the Lifeboats and meet old and new friends.
