MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR This past fiscal year was the NMC Foundation’s best year ever—thank you for making it possible! With your support of The Fund for NMC, scholarships, programs, and innovative new facilities, together we raised more than $9 million during the 2018-2019 school year, including gifts from those of you who have joined the Biederman Society with your planned gift commitments. Each of you, through your gifts to NMC, exemplify our new campaign slogan: Be What’s Possible. The Be What’s Possible Campaign for NMC launched publicly in October, and each of you is an important part of it. You have made education possible for more than 650 scholarship recipients. You have helped the Great Lakes Maritime Academy thrive for fifty years. And you have helped us create new spaces for learning and connecting, like the West Hall Innovation Center, slated to open this spring. I will look forward to hosting you there to celebrate the new possibilities this space will create for our students. As we head in to the new year, I hope you will also join me in welcoming NMC’s new president, Dr. Nick Nissley. I know President Nissley will look forward to connecting with you in the coming months. MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD CHAIR As an alumnus of Northwestern Michigan College, I am honored to serve as chair of the NMC Foundation Board. In this role, along with my fellow board members, I serve as an ambassador for the college, the foundation, and their fundraising priorities. Like you, the members of the NMC Foundation Board care about creating opportunities for the students the college serves. Whether you make generous gifts to support scholarships, facilities, programs, or the college’s greatest needs, you are making a difference for the students. And the futures of these students are the future of our community. One sentiment that I have heard students share time and again is how much it means to them that someone they don’t even know believes in them and is willing to make a gift in support of their education. That someone is you. You make it possible for the college to carry out its mission of providing lifelong learning opportunities to our community. YOU HELP MAKE THE WEST HALL INNOVATION CENTER POSSIBLE

Thanks to your generosity, the West Hall Innovation Center and Library building project commenced the summer of 2018. The project began with news that the State of Michigan committed $7 million to the Innovation Center portion of the project, which propelled the current fundraising initiative for the remaining needed funds for this critical facility at the heart of NMCâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s main campus. The completed facility will be 54,000 square feet of adaptable learning spaces utilized for extended hours, integrated with a 21st century library, dining services, and flexible meeting and gathering spaces for groups. There is no other place on campus with these services. Because of your generosity, the college can do an even better job of serving our students and the community by preparing students for a global and interactive workplace. Students and community members like you will interact through collaborative and engaging learning experiences in the new spaces. The West Hall Innovation Center is scheduled to open during the spring semester of 2020, and your support is important to get the project to the finish line.

Along with learning spaces needed to accommodate todayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s learning methods, NMC will provide a greater sense of student belonging for every student, thanks to you. This new space, and the technology within it, will be made available to every NMC student, residential or commuter. It levels the playing field for available study and gathering options. The new West Hall Innovation Center and Library will be the most visible campus hub to promote experiential learning with students, faculty, and community members working together. COWELLS CREATE POSITIVE COMMUNITY IMPACT THROUGH PHILANTHROPY AT NMC Casey and Dana Cowell know how to put their vision into action. Together, the Cowells made a $1 million gift commitment to NMC. This was one of several major gifts they have made for our community in recent years. Like you, they know that it takes many community partners to achieve the goals we all share to ensure our region remains strong and healthy. “I am always struck by how education is often at the core of any solution in the community,” says Casey Cowell. Through philanthropy, the Cowells are helping to support those solutions. In fact, they have supported NMC for more than a decade, including the International Affairs Forum, the Dennos Museum Center, and The Fund for NMC. The $1 million gift, over time, will advance the college’s current work in several key areas from expanding career training to strengthening our region as a destination for experiential and professional learning, among other initiatives. Leadership support like this gift from Casey and Dana helps advance NMC’s vision to be the resource of choice for higher education,

Daniel and Debra Edson Recognized as 2019 NMC Fellows Daniel and Debra Edson were recognized by the NMC Board of Trustees as the 2019 recipients of the college’s highest honor, the NMC Fellows award. The Edsons have been committed, passionate supporters of education for decades. The couple has focused their giving in the local community where they raised their family and continue to base their business. Their philanthropic support of NMC spans 26 years and has included gifts to scholarships, the University Center, the Dennos Museum Center, WNMC, and now the West Hall Innovation Center. Following the announcement of the Fellows award, the Edsons made a significant gift to name the library inside the West Hall Innovation Center. The Daniel and Debra Edson Family Library will open to the public in the spring of 2020. The Edsons’ gift advances the work and mission of NMC by ensuring access to a 21st century library for the students and community. This new space will provide learners with a facility where they will experience collaborative, engaged learning. It will accommodate the needs of diverse students’ learning styles and provide access to resources for all.

“Our gift was inspired by how important the library is to every student,” says Debbie. The couple first met in the library while they were attending Central Michigan University. Volunteer leadership is also an important facet of the Edsons’ lives. Debbie serves as a member of the NMC Foundation Board and as a campaign steering committee member. Dan has been active on many healthcare boards in the community for decades.

Terry earned an associate degree in petroleum engineering technology at NMC and went on to earn a bachelor’s degree from Ferris State University. He enjoyed a long career in the oil and gas industry before becoming more active in the renewable energy business and with real estate in Traverse City.

Frank studied parks and recreation management and biology at NMC, graduating in 1979. He went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in geography and planning from Western Michigan University, and river restoration science from Portland State University. Since then he has had a comprehensive career, working in private consulting, engineering, and public service with the New York City Parks Engineering Department, and the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians. Frank currently serves as the Director of Public Services for the City of Traverse City and as the chairman of the Boardman River Dams Implementation Team.

Since 1998 he’s been an active booster and backer of downtown, purchasing and improving several downtown buildings. The Downtown Traverse City Association chose Terry to receive the 2018 Lyle DeYoung Award for having made a significant contribution to the vitality of our downtown. He was an original board member of Traverse City State Bank and now serves on the Independent Bank board of directors. Terry served for 8 years as vice chair of the Downtown Development Authority.

Frank’s passion for rivers, community, and family has built bridges and productive relationships between the dozens of partners that his work involves. He is a team player with an exemplary work ethic that traces back to his days at NMC.

Marie completed a pre-med course of study at NMC, and after earning both a master’s degree and doctoral degree, went on to a career in public health as an epidemiologist. She has worked for many agencies, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), and ICF International. Since 2008, Marie’s role has been as a lead public health and preparedness consultant for the DHS Integrated Consortium of Laboratory Networks. The Consortium is a system of federal public health laboratory networks capable of an integrated and coordinated response to acts of terrorism and other major public health incidents.

ESTATE GIFT MAKES SCHOLARSHIPS FOR FEMALE MARINERS POSSIBLE As NMC’s Great Lakes Maritime Academy celebrates 50 years of academic preparation of cadets pursuing careers in the maritime industry, Doris J. Bautch joined the Biederman Society with a gift in her trust to her existing scholarship fund for female cadets. Already her philanthropy has made a direct impact on GLMA cadets, and it will continue to make an even greater impact for future generations. In 2002, as the Chicago-based director of the Great Lakes region for the U.S. Maritime Administration (MARAD), Doris oversaw delivery of the T/S State of Michigan, a former Navy ship, to NMC’s Great Lakes Maritime Academy. “My first order of duty was to transfer that ship to the Academy,” recalled Doris. Thus began a relationship with GLMA that has been enduring. “I was thrilled when

I had the opportunity to meet the female cadets,” Doris said. “Over the years I kept my eye on the Academy and how effective the female cadets were, and how they were managing to compete with the young men. I was so proud of them.” She retired from MARAD in 2009 and established the Doris J. Bautch Maritime Scholarship. While Doris often found herself the only woman at a maritime conference or event, she has noticed the field is slowly gaining more women. She hopes her scholarship encourages that trend and indeed, it has for GLMA cadets. “Maritime is a rewarding field for both women and men. That’s the way I look at it,” Doris shares.
