Local small business owner Jill Grenchik is a student of two Extended Education certificate programs: Business Development and Northern Naturalist. According to Jill, the classes in these certificate programs have helped her keep up with current marketing trends, fine-tune her bookkeeping skills, and gain some new understanding about how to protect this beautiful area we call home. Jill says, “Removing this guesswork out of running my small wild foraged business has allowed me more time in the woods doing what I love. I couldn’t be happier with my experience.” For more information about our certificate programs, visit nmc.edu/ees. .,

Letter from the Director

Hello Learners, As a fun-filled (and busy!) summer in Traverse City begins to wind down and fall approaches, we find an opportunity to turn inward. We reflect on the memories of summer, settle back into the space of our homes, and dive back into ourselves. Learning is at the heart of what we do here at NMC. We learn, so that we may work on who and what we are: as individuals, as a community, and as part of the greater good.

Learn to See As An Artist Sees and You Can Draw As An Artist Draws

Knitting: Socks Conventional Top Down NEW! The foundation for all hand knitted socks begins here in this basic sock class. Socks require comparatively little yarn, are portable, comfortable to wear because you can custom fit them to your feet, and are just plain fun to knit! You will knit in the round using worsted weight yarn on your choice of DPNs, 2 circular needles, or one long circular needle (Magic Loop, recmmended). Learn the anatomy and vocabulary of a sock and master the basic techniques, including the conventional heel turn, of making any sock from the cuff (top) down. Your first sock will be knit in class + homework. Begin your 2nd sock as soon as the first is complete. Additional tips and tricks along the way will help you better understand the construction of a sock. Once you’ve learned the magic of turning that 90° heel you just might be hooked on sock knitting for life! Prerequisites: basic knitting skills, knowing how to knit in the round is a plus but not mandatory. Syllabus and materials list will be sent to registrants prior to the first class. Pattern and instructional handouts will be provided at the first class session. Registration deadline is two weeks before the first class. Lindy Barnes #838

Religion in the Public Sphere Are you interested in the ways in which different orientations around religion impact our world today? According to the Interfaith Youth Core, “In a time of global religious conflict when issues of religious identity are headlining the nightly news, our religious diversity can either be a source of conflict or an opportunity for cooperation. From Baghdad to Jerusalem to Manhattan, religion matters in the world today.” Consider the work of The Harvard Pluralism Project and the growing Interfaith movement as we discuss topics and case studies related to religion as it lives and breathes in the world. Either way it has so many advantages and gives solo travelers experiences they may never have expected or had if they were with a travel partner. Think of it - you go where you want, when you want, eat what you want, stay where you want, go and stop when you want. Do you see a pattern here? A fun bonus is the people you can meet when you are not always engaged with a person you brought along. The class will cover the logistics of solo travel whether for a day or a few weeks in a foreign country! Safety, frugality, practicality, and many starting ideas will be shared.

CLASS SERIES:

The First Amendment: Free Speech and Religion

Diversity Equity Inclusion 101 NEW!

The First Amendment to the Constitution states that ‘Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech.’ But what does that mean, exactly? Where does the free speech of one person or group conflict with the sensibilities or protections of another? What about hate speech? Antiwar protests? When does the free exercise of religious beliefs effectively constitute the establishment of religion? We know that debates and controversy rage on issues that touch our deeply held religious and/or philosophical beliefs, such as abortion, war, sexual preferences, vaccinations, whether to preserve certain war memorials, etc. Together, we will discuss the scope of these First Amendment freedoms and cover some of the key U.S. Supreme Court decisions on these issues. There will be some reading materials and be prepared for lively class discussions.

Behavior is what we do. Culture is how we do it. Understanding Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion is to learn how to identify what makes up your own personal cultural identity, what makes up that of others, and recognize systems that affect how easily someone can perform their culture. It is from knowing this that we are able to have the capacity for rich communication between people and groups. Over the course of three 90-minute sessions, participants will learn what makes up diversity, how to incorporate different backgrounds and experiences, and how to balance those voices in an authentic way. This will be done by mapping your own cultural identity and building tools to have more effective exchanges within groups.

Intercultural Fluency, just like learning a new language, is a practiced ability over time beginning from first being exposed to diversity and leading up to having it internalized in your life. And just as with languages, mistakes and miscommunications happen. In this three part series, we will learn the conceptual framework of intercultural fluency through awareness, intercultural communication, cultural literacy, and intercultural capital. This course will use a mix of both activities and academic frameworks to foster your ability to pivot in different cultural contexts, decrease social anxieties when different groups interact, and develop a tool kit to use with confidence.

Winners and Losers in America’s New Economy NEW!

Inequality and the Price We Pay NEW!

Since about 1980, and picking up steam since 2000, the American economy and society have been radically altered. The old manufacturing economy has given way to finance and, more recently, IT has become an important element. Along with these changes in the economy, the society has been changing; as gender roles, norms, and status have shifted, the nation has urbanized even more, and social and political life have grown polarized.

Through prejudice, discrimination, inattention, choice, and neglect, we live in a world of inequality. Inequality leads to unhappiness, resentment, and sometimes desperation. Is this the kind of world in which we want to live and to bequeath to future generations? We will examine the types of inequality (including economic, political, ethnic, racial, religious, gender, education, justice, medical, and more), the reasons, the costs to ourselves and our world, and possible solutions. U.S. Government: A System of Equal Branches? NEW!

The tripartite government we all learned in civics class has largely disappeared, with the executive branch expanding to replace the legislature as the ‘moving force’ in national life. That shift in power is not exactly what the framers had in mind. Why and how has it come about and what are the implications for American democracy?

Iran: Can the Iran Nuclear Deal Be Salvaged? NEW! Signed in 2015 by Iran and several world powers, including the U.S., the Iran Nuclear Deal imposed significant restrictions on Iran’s nuclear program. President Trump withdrew the U.S. from the agreement, but the Biden Administration has been trying to revive the deal, or replace it with a new agreement. Meanwhile, Iran edges closer to developing nuclear weapons; a step that would destabilize the Middle East. Jack Segal, retired Senior Foreign Service Officer, served as Director for Non-Proliferation at the National Security Council from 1999-2000. Earlier, he served on the State Department delegation at the START nuclear arms control negotiations. Jack Segal

Formal and informal education and, by association, an enormous number of individuals and organizations, shape who we become. As a society, we currently seem most concerned about some aspects of formal education in our schools: what is taught and when; charter versus public schools; security; and scrutiny of school boards regarding policies and transparency. Other concerns include financing, curriculum in its entirety, length of school days and years, class size, teacher pay, recruiting, retention, and more. Through the lens of those concerns, we will focus on the institution of schools, preschool through high school, and will examine where we have been, where we are today, and what future education might look like. Afghans who had supported the Allied effort were abandoned. The Taliban have reneged on their promises during peace talks and reimposed their harsh primitive ways. Starvation, reversals of gains achieved during the war, and a massive flow of refugees are the results. We will discuss what we tried to achieve and what went wrong. Once you have the basics down, you can create plans for each target market and/or product line that even a marketing novice can execute. This course counts towards the Business Development Certificate.
